So my mum has a shell collection, and turns out one she got was an actual snail! Found this fella on a bowl, so we’re lettting em stay until it stops raining! And ohmyfckinggod I fed him that lettuce it was so cuteeeee!

I am not a big fan of denigrating fanfiction by equating Mejia’s novel with it.

I am a fanfic writer. @hislittleraincloud, @sourcherryandsprinkles, @novemberwasgrey, @heavenlyvixen, and @snailsarecute are all fanfiction writers. They're great, go check them out.

Fanfic writers are Legion and have come up with some of the most creative and best writing I’ve ever seen. All for free, all because they love the source material.

I think actual fanfic writers, and other fans who actually care about the plot/the show beyond ships, would have done a better job.

We certainly would have at least cared enough to have someone go over the novel and re-watch the show in order to maintain continuity.

The show aired in 2022. The book came out in 2024. That’s literally years later, and the book was dumbed down, short, and from only one POV. There’s no reason to have let so many mistakes, misquotes, and mischaracterizations get published.

The novel had so many blatant mistakes and questionable creative decisions, that a fanfic writer wouldn’t have done if we were given this assignment.

I have a hard time believing Mejia cared about the show at all, and I seriously question if they even watched it.

I won’t denigrate our craft by calling Mejia’s work fanfiction.

Mejia wrote a shitty novel and piss poor adaptation. Full stop.

The most dreaded Pirate on the Seven Seas was called The Raven. She captained the Nevermore, the swiftest vessel known to man, and it was told that she could command the storm and fog. Where she plundered, no one ever saw her coming and she left devastation in her wake. When they saw the black sails, they knew it was too late.

The stories said she was the daughter of Calypso, goddess of the sea and apprenticed under Circe, a sea witch.

Whole towns would be murdered, stripped of their wealth and supplies. The Raven had a habit of leaving only one survivor, someone to tell the tale of her nefarious deeds.

Xavier was told it was all rubbish and that he had nothing to fear as Port Jericho was the most well protected settlement in the New World. His father, Governor Vincent Thorpe, was teaching him to take over one day, and even had designs to import a Lady from England to be his wife.

He dreaded the day when Lady Bianca Barclay would sail to the New World to be his bride. He never told anyone, but he had dreams of sailing to Paris to study art. Sometimes he would fantasize about stowing away and never looking back, to go on a grand adventure and see something other than Jericho.

One night, drawing the beauty of the stars on a moonless night, he wished he could escape his fate.

He should have been more specific, as the next night, fog rolled in. The pitch-black sails of the Nevermore blended in with the dark wine sea. Port Jericho was bombarded with cannon fire and every weapon of His Majesty’s Navy failed before the Nevermore.

Wolves the size of bears tore through the town and men and women with razor sharp fangs feasted on the townsfolk’s necks.

A massive raven flew overhead as Xavier tried to fight the pirates who invaded his home with his sabre. He and his father were taken prisoner as they were overwhelmed by the enemy.

A dark beauty walked with the grace of a panther through the town to the Governor’s mansion on the hill. She had one of the wolves by her side and a young man Xavier’s age on the other.

As they got closer, Xavier thought he must be losing his mind as the wolf turned into a girl with pink and blue hair. The boy had serpentine eyes with diamond slits. The great raven circled down and perched on the Pirate Queen’s shoulder.

His heartbeat even faster as her dark eyes playfully looked him up and down, she seemed amused at seeing the proud Governor and his son kneeling before her.

“Well, aren’t you a pretty thing?” she purred when she came before him, grabbing his chin and forcing him to look at her. “Such lovely green eyes, don’t you agree Ajax?” she asked over her shoulder to her companion.

“Yeah, I’d say they’re real pretty,” he agreed.

“I think yours are prettier,” the wolf girl said to the other pirate and then wantonly kissed him as she threw herself into his arms. He returned the kiss just as passionately and neither could stop admiring the other while the whole town wept and screamed for mercy.

The Raven toyed with them, teasing them of their dire fate. Somehow she had noticed Xavier’s art and admired his work.

“An artist? Where did an artist learn how to use a sword as you do? I heard you gave my men quite the fight.”

He didn’t dignify the question with an answer, he merely stared long ahead and decided he would try to die with as much of his pride intact as he could.

His stubbornness charmed her, she ghosted her finger along his neck, admiring his strong jawline. She smiled as he shivered from her mere touch and his eyes blazed unwillingly with want.

“You’ll come with me,” she decided, she promised him, “You can paint and draw new lands, and maybe I’ll even model for a few.”

Her lascivious smirk told him perhaps her modeling would be clothing optional.

He told her he’d come willingly and without a fight if she spared his father. She always left at least one witness, so she agreed.

Jericho was stripped of all its wealth and not a soul left alive other than Vincent Thorpe.

As they sailed off,

“Why do you kill everyone in town? Why such brutality?”

“My crew must feed. The vampires need the blood, the wolves need hearts and livers, and the Gorgons need the flesh. We are merely feeding and defending our home. You may call this the New World but trust me when I say it was well occupied for thousands of years before your people even dreamed of crossing the ocean.”

Perhaps he should have felt more guilty for the people in Jericho that had perished, but perhaps the Raven had a point. These Outcasts they called themselves, had a right to protect their own land and seas.

The captain brought him to her quarters, guiding him to her bed as she stalked him like prey and he walked backwards, mesmerized by her heated gaze. He fell back onto the mattress and she tore open his shirt as she straddled his waist. He gasped at the feeling of her weight upon him,

“Are you a maiden?” she questioned him above him, her hands freely roaming his exposed chest.

“Yes,” he gasped as she teased him, seeing no need to be embarrassed or lie. He was certain she could otherwise tell.

“Do you wish not to be?” she was giving him one chance to reject her advances.

He decided that he did not wish to hold onto his maidenhead and that she was everything he had wished for. An escape from his fate and a grand adventure. He answered her by leaning up into her kiss and letting her tear at the rest of his clothes.

The next morning with stark love bites all along his neck and visible on his chest where his new shirt opened, the crew of the Nevermore howled in delight and teased him as his face turned a charming rosy hue.

Wednesday, he had learned her name last night, gave a Cheshire smile and thoroughly enjoyed her newest stolen treasure.

7.  Which part of writing do you struggle with most?

Ummmmmm probably like the rough draft writing? I have a hard time writing something just to get it down, but if I get hung up by editing as I go, I end up not writing at all so it’s a necessary part of my process, unfortunately. 

19.  Who is the easiest/hardest character for you to write about? Why?

The easiest character to write for me would have to be Draco Malfoy?  Idk, maybe because he’s one of my oldest faves?  

Hardest character would have to be Ramsay in GoT. I just... I hate him so much.  It’s difficult to write very much of him at all. It’s not that his voice is difficult to find, because it’s surprisingly not? It’s just that I feel... how gross he is no matter what and I’m constantly aware of that.

23.  If you had to remix one of your own fics, which would it be and how would you remix it?

Hmmmmm... 

I think possibly Fruitcake and Bananas (Wintershock)?  I think I would make it more slow-burny. I feel like I rushed it.

I have a whole post with sympathy for Chris Evans. Between the fake scripts, the secrecy, the isolation of not being able to bounce ideas off people, the disconnect of where the script was going, let alone other people going OFF script *coughtonkycough*... it sounds like the most heart crushing circumstances to be stuck in. He did what he could with how back asswards it went.

Absolutely. The cast have all been professional and working hard all these years and this is what they get in return? Being treated like you don’t matter for shit in a creative process you are supposed to be a crucial part of (and you have been a crucial part of previously)? Especially actors who have carried a large chunk of the franchise on their shoulders all along? And then in interviews they have to sing the praises of the directors and producers and repeat how the reason the franchise even exists is because of RDJ. Who, don’t get me wrong, deserves all the appreciation for his work. But there are lines and the lines were abundantly crossed. I support Chris Evans’ bleeding-through distaste with my entire heart.

It’s funny, in fact, that people identify RDJ as the one and only force that makes the Iron Man movies work because the Iron Man movies basically have two characters that are remotely fleshed out (the second is misogyny, the only character that is in more movies than Tony) so it’s not like the movies themselves have room for anything else, you know? While in other movies it’s a team effort so you can’t say Hemsworth is the only reason Thor movies work or Evans is the only reason Cap movies work, because, duh, there’s Hiddleston and everyone else. Maybe if you wrote a decent part for Gwyneth Paltrow, RDJ wouldn’t have to carry everything on his shoulders. Or, better, most MCU movies have shitty parts for women but the thing about Tony is that he’s written in a way that he cannot have peers (the Avengers movies are all about Tony being in varying degrees of conflict with the people who are supposed to be his peers, because Tony struggles with peers, so even when they’re in good terms he just has to make quips the entire time). Thor has his brother. Steve has Bucky, Sam, Natasha (ding dong! a female person can be a peer to a male person, who knew? granted, it was probably not a feminist enlightenment but we are so starved we’ll get anything decent we’re given, okay). Pepper isn’t Tony’s peer, she is the Love Interest. Peter Parker isn’t a peer, he’s a son/mentee figure...

With this I’m not saying RDJ is overrated, but that others are underrated because they share the spotlight with costars in a way RDJ doesn’t do. If it makes sense...?

                       I'd be super interested to read it! I'm all for more academic work into the behavior ticks that make up the genre, setting it apart as it's own thing. Just data in fandoms alone is interesting. Very cool!

Bedsharing trope with Darcy/Steve, please? I don't know if it's been done before.

Steve says Darcy should take the bed. Darcy says they’re grown-ass adults who can totally share space without making it weird. 

Steve is like “. . . I am like twice the size of this bed, Darcy” and she’s like “. . . okay, fair point but WE CAN TOTALLY TETRIS THIS.” 

“Tetris??” 

“There is no WAY you don’t know what Tetris is.” 

“Incredibly uncomfortable-looking, mostly.” 

Darcy attempts to Tetris it. Steve resigns himself to not getting any sleep tonight.
