Sibelius to Gunnar
Forget gladness
Forgo regret
Wage the unwinnable war
And die a nameless death.
That's the true end of the hero's quest
Don't ache for the island of the blessed.
-- from Snöfrid Opus 29 by Jean Sibelius, 1900
(heard on replay of BBC Prom of July 14, 2023)
Navalny didn't die a nameless death.
Still plenty of heroes do.

Dalia Stasevska, the Finnish principal conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra after tonight’s concert in this year’s Sibelius Festival from Lahti’s perfect Sibelius Hall. She is also the festival’s artistic director and she presided over taught and exciting but also delicately moving performances of Sibelius’ Pelléas Ja Mélisande and two of the composer’s rarely performed melodramas, The Wood-Nymph (Metsänhaltija/Skogsrået) and Snöfrid for narrator and chorus (Somnium Ensemble Choir) with rousing performances of the Swedish words recited dramatically by actors, Dick Idman and Alma Pöysti. Gripping tales of love’s cruelty and war’s realities, richly poignant for these troubled times. Dalia Stasevska and her orchestra come back for the last two orchestral concerts in this year’s festival with three of Sibelius’ supreme masterpieces, Tapiola and the symphonies nos 4 and 7. I just saw your bio, why can’t you watch Vikings anymore? Also I love the new URL
Haha, thank you :) I love my new URL
As for your first question…This got long so I’m putting it below the cut. Sorry if I come across as annoyed / angry. That’s what thinking about season 5A does to me.
Spoilers for Vikings in case this pops up in the feed of anyone that hasn’t caught up with season 5.
TW mention of rape, mention of abuse.
The quality of this show has deteriorated so much since the first season.
When Lagertha is almost raped by Knut in the first season, Ragnar later takes the blame saying that he is the one who killed Knut even though it was Lagertha who did it in self defense. The point is, that Ragnar is freed of the murder charge when it is revealed that Knut tried to rape Lagertha. It is established that he had the right to kill the man that assaulted his wife, who is a free woman. Clearly, Hirst throws this out the window later because when Lagertha’s second husband publicly abuses her no one bats an eye until she kills him. And then there’s the whole thing with Astrid that I’ll get back to later.
In season 5A, Björn and Halfdan’s storyline just feels completely out of place. It’s just…there. All it does is show us just how little Björn cares about Kattegatt and his family because he couldn’t even be bothered with stopping by to say “hi” to Torvi and the kids. This is even further solidified when he starts to eyefuck Snöfrid before he’s even had the decency to tell Torvi he doesn’t love her anymore. And his marriage to Snöfrid serves no purpose either. She speaks twice in the entire season, one of those times she’s just screaming “Father!”.
Margrethe is going crazy…No offense to the actress, based on what I know about Ida she seems like a lovely person but I don’t think she’s a very good actress. Another example of Hirst making sure that his female characters will be disliked. If you’re not a man or Lagertha he doesn’t give a shit. Margrethe will probably die soon but not to worry; there’s going to be a new blonde slave girl that’s involved with one of Ragnar’s sons.
I don’t even know where to start with Astrid. She was abducted, coerced into marrying Harald, then found out that her husband means to join forces with Ivar and attack her former lover, then she is raped because she wanted to warn Lagertha of the upcoming attack. But wait, it gets worse. She’s pregnant. When Astrid, understandably, isn’t over the moon about her new situation, Harald is portrayed as the poor sad man who was just so happy to be married and become a father. The official instagram account has tried to portray them as if they’re just this super cute couple but they’re not. I think Hirst said something about how everyone who died in episode 10 were ready to die. Bull. Shit. Astrid was suicidal, and in my opinion that’s quite different from being ready to die. Can ANY of the female characters ever catch a break?
And before someone says some shit about how rape is a part of the world and that it happens every day all over the world: I am very intimately familiar with rape so you don’t need to tell me that it exists, thank you very much. But it is a sensitive matter which Hirst clearly doesn’t know how to handle.
I can’t cosign Hirst’s shit anymore. I’ve unfollowed the official account and the actors on all social media. I might watch an episode here or there but as for the waiting with anticipation until the episode drops on HBO Nordic, I’m done. The show’s canon pretty much doesn’t exist for me right now, at least not the newest parts of it.
Disclaimer: Yes, I’ve written problematic shit too and unhealthy relationships. But unlike Hirst I am aware of it and actually try to tag appropriately and warn people. Plus I am open to criticism.

Now that Ellisif is dead
(and I'm really sad about this) Maybe we can have another wife of Harald's and another beautiful saga around him. It's the saga of him and his beloved wife Snøfrid Svåsesdotter Read here: King Harald Fairhair met the Sami woman Snøfrid when he was celebrating Yule at the Tofte farm at the foot of the Dovre mountains. This is recorded in Snorre’s sagas of the Norse kings. Dovre has a central place in the oldest myths about Norway and the origins of its people, heroes, kings and chieftain families. In the Middle Ages pilgrims from all over Europe passed through this area on their way to Nidaros. 25. One winter king Harald went to stay in Uppland and arranged a Yule-celebration for himself on the farm Tofte. On Christmas Eve, as the king sat at table, Svaasi came to the doorway. He sent a word to the king to come out to see him, but the king became annoyed over the message, and the same messenger brought the king’s anger back to Svaasi. But Svaasi asked undisturbed that they should bring the message once again, and said that he was the finn (sami), who the king had allowed to raise a lodge on the other side of the hill. The king went outside and promised to visit him, and went over the hill to his lodge. Some of his men told him to go, while others advised him not to go. At his arrival, Svaasi’s beautiful daughter, Snöfrid, stood up, and filled a bowl to the rim with mead, but the king grabbed it all: the bowl as well as her hands, and straight away he felt a heat burning like fire in his body, and straight away he wanted to sleep with her that very same night. But Svaasi said that he would not give his blessing unless they became legally engaged. Then the king engaged Snöfrid and received her and loved her so madly that he did not care about his kingdom, nor how a king is supposed to behave. They had four sons: Sigurd Rise, Halvdan Hálegg, Gudröd Ljome and Rognvald Rettilbeine. Then Snöfrid died, but she did not change hue at all. She looked just as healthy as when she was alive. The king constantly watched over her, hoping that she would wake up eventually. In this way three winters went by. The king mourned Snöfrid’s death, while the entire country worried about the king’s mental health. But finally Torleiv Spake arrived to heal him, and he did so by first addressing the king: ”It is no wonder, my king, that you mourn such a beautiful and noble woman, and that you honour her on down and silk, like she asked you to. But your noble gesture, and her honour, is diminished by letting her lie on the same bedding for too long, and it would be a good idea to move her and change her beddings.” But as soon as they moved her from the bed, a disgusting smell spread from her body. They hastened to build a fire to burn her – but in the meantime her entire body turned blue, and worms, reptiles, frogs and amphibians and all sorts of nasty serpents came out of her. In this manner she sank into ashes, but Harald rose again from his insanity and came to his senses. And he rejoiced with his men and they with him, and the kingdom flourished again.
