i finished playing smt 4 apocalypse for the second time now and man

the gameplay is fire but the writing is giving persona at its worst its not even funny

anyway its lame that you dont fuse with dagda or get him or flynn as a partner on the massacre route you just ressurect one of your old ones to be a "godess" whatever that means, its cool bc you can make it gay but its lame bc it is, commit to the edge and kill everyone forever and give me something cool in return goddamit

how the fuck do you even make enough money to buy the shit in the black market without dlc anyway? twisted tokyo i guess, not that i bothered

i forgot to use the grimoires i was saving up to the end and just lowered the difficulty bc the last dungeon sucks and i wanted to get it over with, the dungeon becomes kinda easy when you realize the trick is that wherever theres a terminal means youre on the right direction

im gonna get the nsp or whatever of the dagda dlc for smtvv bc hes pretty cool

As the biggest fan of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse on this big blue and green planet, may I ask you to cover my boy Krishna?

Throughout the course of this series, Hinduism has quickly risen the ranks of my favorite mythologies to look through. I've always had a passing interest in the third largest religion to date, but as time has gone on and I've continued on with this series, being forced to engage with it more has given me so much more insight into what it consists of, and given me a new respect for the followers of Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Among the countless figures of Hinduism, one of the most popular and prominent, however, has to be today's Demon of the Day, the ever-popular avatar of Vishnu, Krishna.

Lovingly described as "Indian Michael Jackson" by the SMT community, Krishna is an important figure both in SMT IV:A, as well as Hindu mythology as a whole. In the metaphorical melting pot of world religions, folklore, and myth this series consists of, the interactions of Krishna with the cast of the series feel oddly in character for the role this Hindu prettyboy plays. And no, that isn't a joke. Krishna is popular both in and out of Hindu circles, canonically getting bitches left and right through his sheer charisma. As the eighth avatar of Vishnu, Krishna represents all that is worth preserving in the world- love, protection, kindness, compassion, all that jazz.

Throughout the central Hindu text, the Mahabharata, Krishna serves as a central character whose accomplishments are a bit too long and varied to recant here, but he could almost be seen as the main character of the text, and for good reason. He appears as a hero, a folkloric god-child, a prankster, a lover, and so much more, as his epithets are only beaten out by his achievements in how long and varied they are. It all begins with his birth, actually, one as strange as he is himself. In the Krishna Charitra, Krishna was born as the child of Devaki and Vasudeva, but the brother of his mother, Kamsa, forbids this, hearing of a prophecy that his nephew will take his life.

When Krishna is born, in classic mythological fashion, Vasudeva ends up trading away the just-born Krishna into the hands of his future foster mother, in exchange for her daughter. Turns out, oops, the Hindu goddess Yogamaya was residing within that child, and she delivers a message of imminent death to Kamsa regarding Krishna's successful birth. Throughout Krishna's childhood, he was famous for being a prankster who loved, and I mean LOVED butter. For some reason. I don't get it, personally. However, in spite of his troublemaking ways, he also grew to love and protect the people of his home village, working to save them from disaster time and time again. Throughout his time as a child, he played for fun and laughs beyond all else, messing with people often just for his own amusement.

When he grew older, he soon fulfilled his oracle-given right, defeating his uncle Kamsa and then proceeding to reinstate Kamsa's father, Ugrasena. After this, many myths differ- some say he went on to rule his own kingdom, others say he picked up a lot of chicks, but all eventually reconnect in the great winding tale of the Mahabharata. Unfortunately, rather famously, the Mahabharata is an insanely long and complex story, and I'd rather not get into it here in the scope of a bite-sized blog post. TL;DR, shit happens.

Krishna is portrayed... strangely in SMT. For a character famous for having blue skin, as his name can roughly translate to 'All-Blue,' his portrayal is odd, but I quite like the twist on design. The focus on teal and orange make a neat color contrast, and he maintains a youthful prettyboy appearance that I think fits very well. I wish I could get into this more, but I may need to start wrapping this up. Past that, he also has two other designs in the same game, being the spoilerific Vishnu-Flynn.

...My only real comment here is, why did they give him lightsabers?

Overall, though, there is a lot more to Krishna that I could have gotten into. The winding tales of Hinduism are fascinating rabbit holes, but I won't recant them all here. I love how unique and interesting his design is, and apparently his role in IV:A is very important... though, admittedly, I haven't played it yet. Krishna is very deserving of being today's Demon of the Day.

Shin Megami Tensei NINE's demon roster consists of new designs, returning designs and REPEATED designs. And no demon demonstrates this better than Harpy, whose model appears in NINE's roster no less than 5 times. Rather than just post 5 gifs and be done with it like I normally do, I have decided to curate a short overview of the BEST Harpy appearances in MegaTen! Hit "Keep reading" (after viewing this post in my blog because the formatting gets fucked up if you don't) NOW!!!!

Harpy and Furiae appear in Shin Megami Tensei 1 but they don't share assets yet so who gives a crap. Siren is a blue harpy, I guess.

Furiae returns in Shin Megami Tensei II with a new sprite, joined by

Ocypete, Celaeno and Aello! There's some slight asset resharing among them as Aello and Furiae share the same base sprite, but the others share with non-harpy demons so as far as this post is concerned they're original. Combined with artist Kazuma Kaneko's tendency to embellish demon designs in artwork and you'd never expect that all these birds were destined to be textureswaps for an underperforming 2002 XBOX JRPG.

But they were! Now we're cooking! In Shin Megami Tensei NINE the 5 bird-ladies return in one fabulous package. If you love Harpy then you'll love Harpy being given a haircut and a dyejob and reappearing four times. You'll love how they appear alongside themselves for hours of gameplay because they're within the same 10-28 level range. As an added bonus for the asset-reuse lover, said gameplay takes place in looping CG render backgrounds arranged into dungeons so just imagine leaving the town square in Ocarina of Time and arriving in that exact town square except mirrored. By the end of NINE you will love asset reuse, because you will not make it to the end of NINE otherwise. (The harpies are also in Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE but without the looping backgrounds it just isn't the same.)

Honorable mention to Persona 1 which squeezed in the named furies Megaera, Tisiphone and Alecto by using the same upperbody sprite as the three named harpies. Unfortunately Atlus were too afraid to include the named harpy Podarge for a total of 7 unique birdladies, so Persona 1 will only be commemorated by an opacity-reduced overlay of the six they bothered including.

Only regular Harpy survived to the DS-3DS era, using her Soul Hackers design where her head kind of looks like a pinecone. After gracing us with her presence in Strange Journey (+ Redux) and Shin Megami Tensei IV(+ Apocalypse), the Harpy disappeared from the pages of SMT history never to be seen again. As for actual history, I think Harpies were evil birds in Greek mythology but don't quote me on that.

honestly the more i learn more about director katsura "i've never had a friendship with a woman" hashino and his body of work the more i'm unable to even be that generous with 5 or even 3, because so much of the work he oversees is just suffused with conservatism and his simmering misogyny. It's good that he basically brought Atlus back from the brink by making Persona have more mainstream appeal but the older I get the more 3-5 have aged like milk, with 3 only being slightly spared by virtue of "memento mori" being a more universal theme and less liable to getting trampled on by this team. 5 is honestly even more frustrating than 4 to me since A) Admittedly my nostalgia for 4 cushions its shitty parts for me B) P4 came out during the PS2 era, when the quality of video game storytelling surrounding it was much lower. P5 arrived 8 years later when we were well into the indie boom and seeing tiny projects accomplish much more with much less. C) 4's cast for all that they are a monument to missed potential, do feel somewhat like teenagers - albeit heightened, exaggerated ones. 5's cast is kinda one dimensional D) "Seek out and accept the truth, no matter how ugly" was a mishandled theme in 4, but at the very least even when it was fumbled during character arcs, it was still tied to a central mystery plot. P5's general themes of rebellion keep slamming skull-first into a directorial team that seemingly does not have an issue with the status quo, and mostly thinks "rebellion", if it's necessary at all, should basically mean "small-scale conflicts with bad actors".

the thing about persona 4 vs. 5 is that both are rife political praxis, it's just that 5's is slightly less terrible. dgmw 5 is very "EVERYONE can be redeemed and it's ALWAYS bad to kill someone" but i'll take that over 4's "you should always accept the role thrust upon you and if you feel upset with it you just need to force yourself to like it". like persona 5 is very much the platonic ideal of persona 4 to me in gameplay mechanics and narrative, though neither will ever surpass persona 3 imo.

how do i get into shin megami tensei i am intrigued by your posts

since the games aren't really connected by story (except for SMT IV and SMT IV Apocalypse) you can start with any! I personally recommend starting with smt iv since, and I'm completely biased here, it has the best story out of all games and I love the game mechanics. it's for the 3ds if you have one laying around or you can just play it on an emulator. (I can drop a tutorial if you need it) otherwise they dropped smt nocturne for ps4 and switch a while back, and SMT V on switch. they're also good SMT games if those consoles are more up your alley. Personally I got introduced to SMT by SMT IV apocalypse (which is sort of an alternate sequel to SMT IV) and despite not having any prior knowledge I could settle into the story pretty easily
