Final third of Smithills Estate protected
The Smithills team is over the moon to announce that the entire Smithills landscape in North Bolton is now in the ownership and protection of the Woodland Trust. All 1,700 acres of open countryside, streams and woodland now make up the largest site the charity owns in England.
After a recent public appeal and confirmation of a £400,000 grant from Biffa Award (part of the Landfill Communities Fund) towards buying the final part of Smithills, we’re delighted to have been able to complete the purchase of Smithills.
The lower parts of the estate have been held by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation for the last two years, giving us valuable time to raise the much needed funds to secure the final portion of this urban fringe countryside.

Heritage Lottery Fund success for Smithills
Since 2015, we have been managing the Smithills Estate on the edge of Bolton in North West England. We had a fantastic response from our initial fundraising appeal, especially from the people of Bolton.
This amazing support enabled us to purchase two thirds of the estate. A generous partner then purchased the final third, holding it for us and allowing us time to raise the funds needed to bring the entire estate in to our ownership.
Over the past two years we have carried out detailed consultation, undertaken a wide range of surveys and talked to all sorts of people to pull together an HLF funding application that would provide some of the funds needed to acquire this final third and restore the estate’s habitats, access and heritage.
We can now reveal that we were successful in this bid and have secured £1.9 million for the next five years!

Smithills Record – Bioblitz and Wildlife Festival
This year we held our second ever Smithills Bioblitz and Wildlife Festival. Did the sun shine long enough for us to beat last year’s total?
To manage an estate as large as Smithills, you need to know and understand the animals and plants that live here. Our Bioblitz helps to do just that by recording as many flowers, butterflies and rodents as we can. Members of the public of all ages were encouraged to walk across the estate looking for all sorts of different wild species, and several expert biologists also attended on the day, each with knowledge in a certain field such as beetles, birds or bats.
So what was the wildlife total this year?

Diverse countryside can make for the best outdoor experience, so why not combine it with exercise?
There are many sporting hobbies you can take up in our woods; one of the easiest, and most popular, is running.
Running through woodland, along streams and across farmland is one of the best ways to learn about your local area whilst getting fit and healthy. On the Smithills Estate there are 1,700 acres of different landscapes to enjoy.
One local group dedicated to getting more people running is Time 2 Run events, organised by Dave Pearson; he answers our questions about the event below.
