The early morning wakeup call was the sound of rain on the inevitable tin roof. The man at the bar last night pointed out that it is after all the wet season. Remarkable, it seems to rain a fair bit in the wet! Apparently, things might change when we cross the Tropic of Capricorn going south. Possibly.

First item for the day had to be the search and removal of the frog. This rather small version of an amphibian is proving illusive. I suspect he is a resident of the washing machine and thus has temporarily claimed diplomatic immunity and free from eviction. Time will tell. He will have to go shopping at some time....

We are staying in what the owner described as a converted shed. Now that sounds worse than it actually is. I mean, we have stayed in converted garages on the past, and apart from having to do the odd oil change, it was fine. This 'shed' was listed as glamping, but there's no canvas involved or stored lawn mowers either, for that matter. Couple of sofas, 60 inch TV certainly is an improvement on our shed at home. The road servicing this tiny hamlet is also remarkable. They have a one-way system straddling a wide grassy centre reservation. No traffic at all on this cul-de-sac either. Mystifying.

As we sat on our porch indulging in a meagre breakfast, the wet season presented itself in a rather direct approach again. The clouds came again from wherever they were skulking, dumped a vast quantity of their content, and moved on east, drying in their wake almost immediately.

We took a stroll down our one-way system to the posts by the road and a short stretch of shrub to the deserted beach. The tide was in, but with only a very half-hearted, lacklustre wave, we were not going surfing any time soon. (not that we would) It was all so peaceful as we sat on the water's edge marvelling at how stress free you could make life if you had a mind to. There is a small shop by the hotel and bar, which sells everything, but with very little choice. The shopkeeper reminded us that all is not always as relaxed. We do get Cyclones, she advised. We just hunker down, batten down the hatches, and wait it out. The houses have better roofs these days, after all. Very stoic, I'd say.

After a meagre lunch, we took a short drive to the next hamlet at Hydeaway Bay. This is a very smart collection of homes and holiday apartments along a single road following the sandy beach. Amenities such as stores, pubs, and restaurants were lacking, but most importantly, they did have a bowls club. This may make a statement about the age of the population? However, how can one fail to be cheered by the name of the place. The beach was as deserted as you might expect, possibly because it's the wet season, of course, or possibly because the sign at the entrance to the beach is a menu to the variety of jellyfish visitors that can be found in the waters from time to time: Chiromex, Cyanea, Catostylus, Irukanji, Physalia, and Morbacca. Each of these species would give you a nasty sting and burning pain, which could mainly be treated with a jolly good dose of vinegar. A good number of beaches will have a supply in metal boxes along the foreshore. If none, go to the nearest fish and chip shop. Get some chips, and don't forget the patient as you throw the bag away. So, if the water is offline, people are also very cautious about sunbathing on the sandy bit because of skin cancer. That rules the beach out and is presumably why bowls is becoming popular? Oh, in Queensland, don't forget crocodiles.

Spurred on by our lonely beach experiences today, we bagged up the SB, 2 glasses, and the replenished stock of nibbles and set off on foot to the beach for our evening ritual. There was no glowing sunset because we were facing east, but as the light dulled and changed it was simply magical sitting on seating that other people had left out along the shoreline, the tide now so far out a vast area of sand not visible earlier today had now revealed small rocks, shallows, and waders seeking out a late supper. It was such a warm evening and partaking of our Banrock Sauvignon Blanc; just two sole figures sitting drinking in such a beautiful seascape, the darkening shapes of islands seemingly floating in a pale azure blue ocean, was an experience we had to pinch ourselves to be convinced it was real. We didn't want to leave it or allow it to end. But rubbery chicken awaited.

ps. This afternoon we parked our Renault in a big empty carpark to go down onto the beach. When we returned, someone had pulled up in a motorhome and parked right next to us. The rest of the carpark was still empty! Why???

he sleeps in a hammock! he strung it up inside the plane. sometimes he just sleeps outside on top of the tail of the plane though. he's silly like that.

sails would only ever seek gale out if there was trouble. usually, dread's ship is far away from where gale's crashed-plane-house is, so he'd have to reallyyyyyy work for it in order to get there. dire circumstances, yknow.

that said, gale comes around pretty often. usually in the dead of night while everyone is asleep. wakes sails up, spirits him away to some adventure. dread's used to it by now. he knows his crewmate will be back eventually. still kind of annoying that it happens without warning though. like, what if they had PLANS, gale? cmon :/c

i don't think anyone in dread's crew believed sails at first, but then dread caught gale trying to take sails on an adventure one night and thought he was a siren (lol). so he woke everyone up, there was this big confrontation, and everyone realized... that the legend was real, and really pissed that he was now running late.
