From a very early age, maybe 7 or 8, I would play in and travel through the storm drain system of the small town we lived in. Forty years later I still have that whole town drain system mapped out in my mind and can plot an alternative route from any one point to another using the drains. They were also very good hiding spaces from bullies (including my father) and hours of amusement could be found hunting for crayfish, finding guppies or tadpoles, or generally just poking things with sticks. How I survived to adulthood without being stuck in a sudden flash flood, I am not quite sure. Mind you, we also used to play down disused coal mines and at the local landfill rubbish dump.

What, in hindsight, was weird about your childhood?

So, I'm not talking abusive or anything like that. I mean, things you took as normal and commonplace because you were a kid and didn't know anything about the rest of the world, and now you know that it was and is odd. I'll go first. From age 2-7, my family had a wood-fueled cookstove and oven. The house was also heated with wood, which was and is unusual for the United States.
