I love the soundtrack design in Small Saga. Its basic premise is a wainscot-fantasy-meets-sword-and-sorcery sort of deal with mice and rats wielding lighters and pocketknives and other human-made tools as "god-weapons", played more or less 100% straight, with the obligatory blend of plinky faux-medieval ambience punctuated by thumping orchestral bombast for the big events, and then out of nowhere you get hit with a boss fight accompanied by this:

I want you to try and imagine, without context, what you could possibly be fighting that would warrant this music.

The highlight of my week has very quickly become watching @assamkofi and @neitherabaron play Small Saga. Sometimes a game about a mouse just really wanting to just kill some guy can be so emotionally devastating.

Plus some sketches for the characters as humans down below :)

(The rats have plaits to symbolise their in game tails. Verm gets a fake plait as he gains his "tail")

Winter: ...It sounds like the Ace-Ops have failed.

Winter: General, head to the roof. I'll deal with these intruders.

Ironwood: Tear them to shreds, Schnee. (Leaves)

Winter: (Turns, Hand on saber) This is as far as you go.

Ruby: Just give up. You might be a Specialist and Schnee, but you're still outnumbered four-to-one!

Blake: Keep your guard up; she's called "Inequal" for a reason.

Yang: Heh... Another empty title!

Winter: An "empty" title that is well-earned.

RWBY: (Ready their weapons)

Winter: (Draws her blade) Do you know how I've earned the title "Inequal"? It's not a reflection of my battle record, flawless though it may be...

Winter: (Dodges Ruby, Parries Weiss, Deflects Blake, Counters Yang)

Winter: It's because as the Grimm continued to spread, supplies dwindled. The Schnee family fled to another kingdom, Weiss included, and I was the only Schnee stubborn enough to stay in Atlas.

RWBY: (Shoot Winter, Strike Winter, Outmaneuver Winter, Cut Winter)

Winter: And here I stand. The last Schnee remaining in Solitas. Winter the soloist. Winter without equal.

Ruby: (Dodges Winter, Cuts through Grimm)

Weiss: (Parries Winter, Matches her glyphs)

Blake: (Deflects Winter, Shoots from behind)

Yang: (Counters Winter, Strikes her directly) YOUR FANCY MOVES WON'T PROTECT YOU FROM ME!

Winter: (Overwhelmed, Stumbles) Ghk!

Soldier: Specialist Schnee! I'm here to assist!

Winter: Hah... Thank you, Soldier...

Winter: (Tosses aside sword, Grabs Soldier)

Winter: (Grins wide with fangs, Pulls close)

CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! SHLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURP!

Winter: (Covers her face)

Blake: ...Disgusting.

Weiss: What... What kind of Schnee would eat her friends?!

Winter: ...Friends?

Winter: No. These humans were never my friends. They looked to me with fear, merely tolerating my existence because I gave them the solution they desired. As payment, I would be allowed to eat my fill of prisoners. Unfortunately...

Winter: (Removes hand, Reveals manic glee) IT'S NEVER ENOUGH FOR ME~!

Ruby: She's... She's not moving.

Yang: She's still standing, though...

Weiss: She's unconscious, but she refuses to kneel. Oh, Winter...

Blake: Can you hear me, Specialist Schnee?

Blake: I get it. The hunger. That feeling deep down that only gets worse when you're completely alone.

Blake: But if you try to fill that void with the company of fascists like Atlas...
