Often when I post an AI-neutral or AI-positive take on an anti-AI post I get blocked, so I wanted to make my own post to share my thoughts on "Nightshade", the new adversarial data poisoning attack that the Glaze people have come out with.
I've read the paper and here are my takeaways:
Firstly, this is not necessarily or primarily a tool for artists to "coat" their images like Glaze; in fact, Nightshade works best when applied to sort of carefully selected "archetypal" images, ideally ones that were already generated using generative AI using a prompt for the generic concept to be attacked (which is what the authors did in their paper). Also, the image has to be explicitly paired with a specific text caption optimized to have the most impact, which would make it pretty annoying for individual artists to deploy.
While the intent of Nightshade is to have maximum impact with minimal data poisoning, in order to attack a large model there would have to be many thousands of samples in the training data. Obviously if you have a webpage that you created specifically to host a massive gallery poisoned images, that can be fairly easily blacklisted, so you'd have to have a lot of patience and resources in order to hide these enough so they proliferate into the training datasets of major models.
The main use case for this as suggested by the authors is to protect specific copyrights. The example they use is that of Disney specifically releasing a lot of poisoned images of Mickey Mouse to prevent people generating art of him. As a large company like Disney would be more likely to have the resources to seed Nightshade images at scale, this sounds like the most plausible large scale use case for me, even if web artists could crowdsource some sort of similar generic campaign.
Either way, the optimal use case of "large organization repeatedly using generative AI models to create images, then running through another resource heavy AI model to corrupt them, then hiding them on the open web, to protect specific concepts and copyrights" doesn't sound like the big win for freedom of expression that people are going to pretend it is. This is the case for a lot of discussion around AI and I wish people would stop flagwaving for corporate copyright protections, but whatever.
The panic about AI resource use in terms of power/water is mostly bunk (AI training is done once per large model, and in terms of industrial production processes, using a single airliner flight's worth of carbon output for an industrial model that can then be used indefinitely to do useful work seems like a small fry in comparison to all the other nonsense that humanity wastes power on). However, given that deploying this at scale would be a huge compute sink, it's ironic to see anti-AI activists for that is a talking point hyping this up so much.
In terms of actual attack effectiveness; like Glaze, this once again relies on analysis of the feature space of current public models such as Stable Diffusion. This means that effectiveness is reduced on other models with differing architectures and training sets. However, also like Glaze, it looks like the overall "world feature space" that generative models fit to is generalisable enough that this attack will work across models.
That means that if this does get deployed at scale, it could definitely fuck with a lot of current systems. That said, once again, it'd likely have a bigger effect on indie and open source generation projects than the massive corporate monoliths who are probably working to secure proprietary data sets, like I believe Adobe Firefly did. I don't like how these attacks concentrate the power up.
The generalisation of the attack doesn't mean that this can't be defended against, but it does mean that you'd likely need to invest in bespoke measures; e.g. specifically training a detector on a large dataset of Nightshade poison in order to filter them out, spending more time and labour curating your input dataset, or designing radically different architectures that don't produce a comparably similar virtual feature space. I.e. the effect of this being used at scale wouldn't eliminate "AI art", but it could potentially cause a headache for people all around and limit accessibility for hobbyists (although presumably curated datasets would trickle down eventually).
All in all a bit of a dick move that will make things harder for people in general, but I suppose that's the point, and what people who want to deploy this at scale are aiming for. I suppose with public data scraping that sort of thing is fair game I guess.
Additionally, since making my first reply I've had a look at their website:
Used responsibly, Nightshade can help deter model trainers who disregard copyrights, opt-out lists, and do-not-scrape/robots.txt directives. It does not rely on the kindness of model trainers, but instead associates a small incremental price on each piece of data scraped and trained without authorization. Nightshade's goal is not to break models, but to increase the cost of training on unlicensed data, such that licensing images from their creators becomes a viable alternative.
Once again we see that the intended impact of Nightshade is not to eliminate generative AI but to make it infeasible for models to be created and trained by without a corporate money-bag to pay licensing fees for guaranteed clean data. I generally feel that this focuses power upwards and is overall a bad move. If anything, this sort of model, where only large corporations can create and control AI tools, will do nothing to help counter the economic displacement without worker protection that is the real issue with AI systems deployment, but will exacerbate the problem of the benefits of those systems being more constrained to said large corporations.
Kinda sucks how that gets pushed through by lying to small artists about the importance of copyright law for their own small-scale works (ignoring the fact that processing derived metadata from web images is pretty damn clearly a fair use application).

─ paper rings . . . ❨ send me a description of yourself + a fandom and gender preference, and i’ll ship you with a character. ❩
i couldn't miss out a good time! i had this previously done but it would be interesting to know who i'd match with! i copy pasted but i added some more that might help impact the results. expect me to come around for another if i may? maybe the next day or next week.
fandom: formula one
info abt me: female & prefers men!
my big three is: leo-gemini-pisces!
i am quite an adaptable individual, love sunsets, stargazing, animals and pets & divination or anything related to spirituality.
not quite fond of social media but i really love interacting with people whom i share interests with here in tumblr! lately, i am really trying to build friendships amongst f1 writers and even readers too.
i heavily value my private life and prefer not to tell people about my personal next step in life (preferring not to share private information unless i feel comfortable) and i don't post much in my social media accounts but i have an instagram solely for posting my well curated portraits with poems as captions.
i also love psychology, deep talks about life or anything very reflective, tell me a situation that had been bothering you and i will make you reflect and tell about yourself. (this scares some people because they always say i could read them like an open book)
having a lot of hobbies and interests (i couldn't stay still between one thing [e.g. i could love making music this week, next week i'd be into arts]). right now i am into writing fics and serving the people some entertainment lmao but i have to stop because for some reason my reach is not reaching idk what to do to alleviate that. i have a keen eye for detail and quite a perfectionist — selective even.
i have a small circle of friends in real life. they are the ones who i can trust my life with. i do believe that quality is better than quantity. but building new connections helps me discover about people more and reflect about life.
my talents are diverse mainly because in my country being an all out performer is a thing. schools were literally built here for you to show and perform like beyoncé or sorts to earn grades. singing while playing an instrument, dancing, acting, writing, you name it i could give it a go. i am a theater kid so i think it impacted developing these talents, they're very enjoyable regardless. 100% not picky with music either, music kind of reflects a person's soul. roadtrips are nice and they're quality time. that's how you also know which friend of yours is only there for clout and the ones who are there because they look forward to a journey of sharing the same space with another.
clubbing is not my thing. i am not fond of smoking or drinking alcohol. I AM HEAVILY TURNED OFF BY VICES but i don't mind an occasional wine for formal events. if you put me inside a club, expect me to sit down on a corner and watch everyone. i tend to attract men easily (i am not bragging but it's hard rlly) and i do believe clubs are not the best place to attract guys sorry •́ ‿ ,•̀ if you'd invite me to a party, we can have picnics or a dinner at your home or somewhere. i couldn't handle clubs, 100% would dip if someone say clubs or bars. they're too overwhelming.
i was raised in a quite conservative household so i preferably wear clothing that do not show much skin. i love statement outfits and prefer to make my own clothes or customize clothes rather than buying high-end branded clothing. my wardrobe is quite diverse, i can have masculine and feminine outfits. styles from fairycore, 50s, 80s, 90s wear, autumn wear, formal wear and officewear. i have gowns too! at this point i can build a boutique and often get teased about it by people in my circle💀 i grew up with relatives who doesn't smoke and only drink on occasion.
my love language (receiving) is acts of service and receiving gifts. my love language (giving) is acts of service and quality time / words of affirmation. i love solving people's problems and give them cheat codes in life hahahaha
idk if this would help but i have a stale lovelife, if i happen to put myself out there there there will always be a lot of guys wanting to pursue me ಥ‿ಥ i pull away immediately if this starts to happen because it drains me so much. i would then focus into my career and go into hermit mode again, the one who stays in my life and wait for me to regain my energy is what i think, is meant for me. tbh, i need someone who is patient and understanding towards me or it's going to be disaster lmfao ฅ[ᓀ´ ▾ `ᓂ]ฅ
LEWIS HAMILTON
very private person, both of you like to keep it that way especially when it comes to you relationship
both of you have very deep conversations about life each other certain topics and just life in general
you both love to reflect on stuff and help each other get stuff of your chest
you tend to do this while you cuddling with chill music in the background
lewis supports you though all of your different hobbie phases
love that your so open to trying new things
you both have a tight inner circle and you both value quality over quantity
the two of you def recorded a song together
you both hold fashion shows for each other after a massive shop
both of your love languages are is acts of serves
which sometimes turns into a funny competition of who can out do the other
is always patient and understanding when it comes to you

Art Summary and Art vs Artist 2022
2022 Art Ramblings and Other Shenanigans:
A.) I am not speed
Whenever artists wanna try something new to improve their art, we tend to make big drastic changes right away. This can be effective for others but not for everyone. As you can see, my art style is still the same as last year with minimal tweaks.
I decided that if I'm gonna make improvements, I'm gonna do it gradually instead of incorporating them all at once. This can be a big help in maintaining consistency. If the changes were small, we can easily remember and apply them on our next artwork.
“So is it effective? Did your art improve?”
It’s barely noticeable but yes it did. I like the direction in which my art progress is currently going. I am at the point where I actually like my finished work more than my sketch. You know that meme where artists like their sketch more than their finished work bec it looks better? I don’t feel like that anymore and that surely tells something haha.
B.) I failed successfully
Last year, I made a pseudo new years' resolution where I said "I hope I can draw my ships, anime and original stuff" since I mostly did Genshin. Well, I successfully drew my ships, anime and original stuff this year HOWEVER I made less videos lol.
I tried doing 1-2 artworks in between videos but sometimes the artwork took me longer to finish so I wasn't able to make video content afterwards. Another thing was the fact that I sorta dedicated some months tryna help save our country but in the end we failed miserably... Anyways! Let's not talk about that here.
Even though I made less videos, I managed to make 2 impactful videos which contributed a lot to my channel's growth this year. One of them is now my most viewed video.
C.) I wanna delete everything
Checking other artists' IG accounts makes me want to turn my account into an art only account. But then again I know I'll be having the urge to shitpost and post irl stuff every now and then so as much as I wanted to be one of those mysterious artists who only post/talk about their art, I can't lmao.
I feel like there's a lot of pressure on the artists who only post art related stuff bec people will always be expecting you to post art or even if they don't, you yourself might think they expect you to. And this kinda contributes to being burnt out somehow.
Whenever I am on the verge of deleting everything (except art) I remind myself that it's fine even if I ain't one of those cool artists accounts. I am human and I do other human activities too besides drawing. It's like taking a breather I guess.
"Make 2 accounts, one art and one personal"
Not everyone has the capacity to manage 2 accounts in one platform when you’re already managing other accounts on other platforms. Even if you did, most people who followed you for your art won't give a fuck about your personal one which kinda defeats the purpose haha.
I know this is not applicable to all artists, especially the professionals/veterans. But for hobbyists like me, maybe you should consider this. I am not forcing you to post personal stuff bec I know not everyone likes that. I'm just saying that it's important to emphasize every once in a while to your audience that you are human too and not just an art producing machine.
D.) I miss time traveling
Long time ago, during my Deviantart days, I used to type a bunch of shit in the description box of my artworks. Then came the Tumblr era where I continued to blog my heart out. When these platforms "died" and Twitter and IG migration happened, I slowly stopped doing this without me noticing it.
I still say things on Twitter but since there's a limit and making threads is a pain in the ass, I ain't as expressive as before. And these platforms (Twitter and IG) made me adapt to its "culture" of short tweets/captions or sometimes nothing at all, just pictures. Which was great! I mean not everyone needs to know your entire business on the interweb right lol.
But as time passed by, I began to realize that I love backreading (I dunno if this is the right term) whatever shit I used to talk about in the past. It's actually amusing no matter how cringe, happy or lonely it was. However, since transferring to Twt and IG, I can no longer go back to a certain period in my life to reminisce what the hell I was thinking, doing and feeling that time because I got nothing to backread and that made me kinda sad?
Even though I am still bad with words, I am trying my best to resurrect my old self here in IG (just less cringe and more careful this time). Don’t worry I am not going to make long posts everyday lmao.
"Nobody's gonna read all that"
True. HOWEVER my future self would and I think that's more important. It's the same as writing in your diary, you write for yourself first and foremost.
“Why don’t you just go back to Tumblr to blog”
My time on Tumblr has passed. Whatever good or bad memories I have there, I just wanna keep them as they are and no longer add some haha. I still love the platform and post my artworks there tho.
Conclusion:
Art progress and channel growth did great this year. Tho I fell short in terms of quantity of my video content, the quality compensated. I am not gonna make any pseudo new year’s resolutions this year. All I can say is I have a lot of ideas and I hope I can execute them.
Before I end this, I just wanna say hi to my future self. I know you’re reading this again for the nth time. Maybe you’re feeling sentimental or just bored as usual haha. Nevertheless I hope you’re doing well.
Happy New Year everyone! Stay safe and see you on my next video~
Jacq out.
P.S. Fuck AI generated images.

Second pre-formative hand-in critique
After making a number of changes (as per David's feedback) since last Monday, I went through my booklet with Emil today, which was really helpful. It highlighted unnecessary things, small changes that would make big improvements to streamlining the book's flow and key elements I hadn't included (a key one being captioning photographs). He ran through a lot of things I had looked over and also needed to improve upon, which I will take into account this week and make those changes before the Thursday hand-in.
The symbol is meaningless (i.e. has no purpose) - get rid of it.
Though the rap around text was good - the two words split by the spine were unecessary distraction from the title (if that's what i choose to be the title) which is Gimlet Display.
It was suggested that I incoperate more of the meaning of the booklet in relation to my pepeha in the front cover. I think some development into making the covers (front and back) more useful in that sense could be explored.
A suggestion for graphically displaying the text in a very simple way was a large G/GD on one/both of the covers, which as above, i'll use in development.
He liked that I used my tartan which links to my Scottish heritage. Exploring the relevance of it could be a good idea. My idea was to, in moving around some of my spreads as later suggested, that i could put the information/history page as pgs 1-2 and explain its relevance there.
Something of my own reflection was the cover image was a little distracting. I might edit it a little to make whatever text I place on the front more in the foreground but without losing the detail and impact of the tartan. I have since scaled it down (it was scaled up in the above print out) which I think this may work better. Also having the text larger will help with this.
This page is unfinished (hence the palceholder text for blocking); this will be something I need to finish but the formatting of it is okay thus far i think.
Point to mention in the rationale *why is this font good?* > *why did i chose it -> relation to my pepeha*
Captions were something i needed to add for the photograph here but i think i will be changing it anyway.
Emil mentioned that streamlining all of the footer elements on the pages was a necessary detail. As he said they are the 'normal' elements and everything else will show as a deviation from that to show what the typeface can do.
These two spreads were relatively untouched by feedback apart from the note about footer details.
However, I did have a personal reflection for these. I though that the text overall might be on the smaller side. I have noticed in all of my spreads that has been the case. So i think being a bit more bold with my choice of font size would be a good idea to bring contrast between the smaller pt sizes and larger pt sizes.
Something that isn't super noticed once printed was the fact that i did make all text a dark green shade. Which after playing around does make a significant difference on the eye even if it is subtle (compared to plain black). However, for further refinement I might try a colour combination.
Another element i need to add is the pt sizes and font names on all the pages.
Three main points for this spread:
The text in the poems does look too similar to the footer text > could be changed to medium weight to differentiate?
Move the Haere Mai poem/song title to the top of the block of text to signal that it is another piece of text (not flowing on from the previous page), where to start reading and that it is the title of that section of text.
Note the authors of the texts (My Great Aunt) and the relevance of the text - why is it there?
The biggest problem with this layout was the text crossing (what I have come to call) the no-go zone. Anything crossing that line will be lost even a little because of binding and alignment.
However, suggestions were to play with the spread a little. What different kinds of AEIOU's could I showcase? Try moving them around and play with the space in the spread.
In regards to the photo asset on this page, again, needs a caption. A further suggestion was to see what it looked like spread over both pages. I do have a limit on its dimension but I could play with this a little.
Last point was if it was necessary to label every page with the footer 'Gimlet Display' > it will be obvious given the start of the booklet what the typeface is called, so maybe use this space for what specific font is used, point size etc. instead.
This spread got a big tick. Emil said it was a good resting page. Given that my booklet does have a lot of detail-heavy pages, spreads like this one give the eye a rest from having to follow any detail whilst also showcasing alternative versions of one glyph the font has to offer.
A way to further this might be to make another spread in this kind of format (which I think I could use to replace the image page on pg. 22 maybe). A symbol that Emil pointed out that was quite unique in its form was the # from pg. 17. He said it's got a unique skew and weight variation. Thus, it could be a cool idea to make that a key point somewhere in the booklet, just to give rest as well as iterest and pinpointing a cool feature of the typeface.
This page got a pretty good go ahead neatly showcases all of the accent alternatives. The only thing to change was the title of the spread. Emil said to have a look into what other type specimens have named this kind of layout.
The left spread:
[1st line] doesn't quite fit with the rest (I think it's because of its "lack" of detail compared to the other lines?) > move down to balance?
[2nd line] good.
[3rd line] As mentioned before, Emil thinks the # deserves a feature (bold/scaled up in another spread?)
[4th line] symmetry of this one is great, well balanced.
[5th line] the cents symbol is the only one that stands apart but can't be changes and still makes sense.
[6th line] the No. symbol doesn't work with the rest, if it can be used elsewhere go for it but otherwise probably not hugely necessary. The tilde is a nice one to include though > find where it can go?
The right spread:
What is the significance of the numbers, and why is one outlined? > explain in the caption. Or repeat to create a pattern/rhythm.
Old style numbers need explaining (otherwise one would think i did that myself) > its a feature of the typeface so label it somewhere (page title?)
Split the page titles.
Suggested this could be moved to the front of the booklet, given that it is key information about the font (not just the history > rethink the title or split the titles over the two pages).
For clarification, Schadow is the correct spelling :) but showcase that this was what the typeface was inspired by. Include more clearly what each typeface looks like on there own.
The comparison between the typefaces is good. Could do a lot more labelling (this could be where i do some "diagrams" on type form features.
A note for the second paragraph on the left page; showcase those different fonts on a larger scale to more clearly see their disctint features. > This may have me rethink some of the more text heavy pages as i could showcase these here instead? given this spread may become quite busy with the changes and level of detail.
It was suggested I move all larger text to one side and bulk text to the other, as there is blank space that is being unused.
Also a final point was to extend the written part, dig deeper into the typeface itself.
Caption for the photo, again.
Move this spread to the front > key information?
Personal note > move the line for language support up one line.
Overall I am super happy with this draft of my work; it is by no means the final draft. I have come quite far from my earlier drafted pages, but I'm not finished yet. This draft aligned with how I wanted the booklet to look, but there is still much to improve, and I will continue refining it even after the Thursday hand-in.

I want to respond to this because I think your heart is in the right place, but you may be taking this post as broader advice than I intended. Sorry for the increasingly long essays.
Worth clarifying that the subject that inspired my post is a reaction or meme image transcribed by someone who didn't post the image. I think there's nuance here about how much detail and what kind is expected depending on context.
Like, an original art work has much more intent going on than a simple meme or reaction image or cat photo, you know? Some pieces of art have a stunning amount of interesting detail everywhere, all of which contribute to the viewer's experience of the picture, so leaving *any* of it out seems to result in a lesser experience for someone reading a text description, right? And if you're the artist, you're that much closer to the art and you value all those little details too, so it's hard to figure out where to draw the line.
Reaction images, memes, and the like are pretty clear. Graphs and academic figures also have very specific guidance. But it's a little muddier for art, and I...don't actually have any clear rules to offer personally. I'm not an expert in the field. I don't rely on image captions in the way I do audio captions. I've read some articles describing best practices, and I've talked to friends who rely on these image captions, but it seems like there's conflicting views here.
On one end of the spectrum there's the folks who say "keep it to just enough description I can understand what the conversation is about." So a piece of In Stars And Time fan art might read "Siffrin and Loop hug each other, crying." Right there, that's plenty for someone to understand the comments/replies/reblogs about the image. Yes, that means they're missing out on all the cool little details, but you have to accept that no amount of description is going to perfectly replicate the experience of your art in another medium.
On the other end of the spectrum is folks who'd like to see more of the emotional impact of the piece come through in the description, and they don't mind reading something slightly longer. They'd like it to read maybe, "Siffrin clings to Loop, tears streaming down his face, looking desperate and lost. Loop holds him awkwardly, wearing an expression of pity. Sunlight breaks through the leaves of the tree they stand under, illuminating the two in a way that evokes a spotlight on a stage." Here I've introduced more descriptive prose and selected a few details that are emotionally significant and symbolic. This one is harder to do than the other and not everyone even wants this, so if this isn't your skillset, just keep it brief like the example before. (But also you should still keep this one brief! You don't need paragraphs of descriptive text!)
One thing basically nobody wants is something I see pretty often around here: a mindless description that catalogues every detail, no matter how big or small, with zero interpretation. Like, "A picture of a tree with leaves on it in a sketchy style. Everything is in black and white and gray. There are 12 leaves on the ground. The trunk has a knot on it. One character is wearing a white cloak and a white hat and has an eyepatch and boots. They are hugging a character that has a glowing spiky head and two eyes that are different shades of gray. Both of them have tears on their face. There are beams of light coming down from the top of the picture and a circle of light around the two characters. The bottom of the picture is dark. The top of the picture is also dark except for the parts near the beams of light. The artist's signature is in the bottom right. It is in red and circled and hard to read."
You should not be trying to help someone construct a perfect replica of an image in their mind palace.
I swear some of you must be captioning images poorly on purpose. Either that or Tumblr's piss-poor media literacy extends so far that people genuinely believe mindlessly writing whatever details they notice at random is somehow useful to people.
As an example, I saw a thread in which someone replied with a photo of a cat as a reaction to someone else's post. It's clear from context that the cat's body language was meant to evoke a quiet thoughtfulness in response. Someone else followed up with an image description that went into excruciating detail about the cat's coloration, its markings, its fur length, its eye color, then described the color of the paint on the walls, took time to mention the random objects in the background, and *didn't* describe the cat's pose whatsoever.
Look, if you're going to try to "helpfully" caption an image, please make some effort to understand what the image is trying to communicate so that you can write a *useful* description. If someone says "wow, this is a weird looking cat" then sure, describe the markings in full detail. If someone goes "me when you take my juice box" with an angry-looking kitten, maybe talk about the cat's stance and apparent expression and skip the part where you list every title you see on the bookshelf in the background.

- Tip: Add hyperlinks toward your site, social media channels, or related content through the description to generate traffic and increase engagement.
4. Work with Tags Effectively
Tags enable search engines to scan through the content of your video to then group it properly. Mix and match broad and narrow tags together to include all of the main keywords and related terms. Tip: Just don't overdo it. Keep it at 5-10 relevant tags to avoid the zone of keyword stuffing.

While the role of thumbnails is not that of an SEO, it has duly significant impacts when it comes to clicks. Having an attractive and high-quality thumbnail helps boost the click rate of your video, which in return will boost your rankings.

I've now read this paper and here are my takeaways:
Good news, fellow artists! Nightshade has finally been released by the UChicago team! If you aren't aware of what Nightshade is, it's a tool that helps poison AI datasets so that the model "sees" something different from what an image actually depicts. It's the same team that released Glaze, which helps protect art against style mimicry (aka those finetuned models that try to rip off a specific artist). As they show in their paper, even a hundred poisoned concepts make a huge difference.
(Reminder that glazing your art is more important than nighshading it, as they mention in their tweets above, so when you're uploading your art, try to glaze it at the very least.)
