okay I saw atsv two days ago and it hasn't left my mind. like, i picked up on the fact that miles was in the wrong universe waaaaaay before he did (when the machine was going) and yet. that scene with Rio? and her being so encouraging of him? totally made me forget that This Isn't The Right Dimension. so you bet when she was like "who's spider-man" i was sitting there going "oh my gosh how did i forget"
I was so caught up in cheering for Miles telling his mom that I forgot a Big Plot Point. because of Emotions. Kudos to everyone involved in making that scene, that was amazingly well done

I think there can be something to be said about villainizing characters the moment they make a mistake which causes them to oppose the protagonist, and how our reactions when defending these characters should instead be an acknowledgement circumstances along with their mistakes.
Yes I’m talking about Gwen Stacy. Spoilers for atsv below!
Let’s take a look at how Gwen is during the beginning of the story, shall we?
Gwen starts off the movie in her watercolor mood ring world isolated and guilt ridden. In a world where emotions are so easily expressed by splashes of colour, her emotions are very rarely expressed. She isolates herself from others due to her identity as Spider-Woman, and the guilt she feels for being unable to save her best friend, Peter Parker.
Because Gwen can’t share this part of her identity with others, she is unable to confide in or be emotionally vulnerable towards her bandmates and father, isolating herself even further, and making her yearn for friends like Miles who she feels would able to understand all of her, spiderperson included.
It doesn’t help that her relationship with her father is distant and strained because of her superhero identity is something Gwen knows her father disapproves of and the Peter guilt enforces her a bunch of her self loathing. Meanwhile her father believes that capturing Spider-Woman and avenging Peter will fix his relationship with his daughter and gives her the closure he believes she needs rather than just talking to her about what would give her closure.
Speed ahead to the confrontation with her father, and Gwen reveals herself to her father, hoping that him can accept her despite the things she’s kept from him. And her father can’t accept her at that moment, he shoots a gun at her, so she runs away. She is now even more isolated then ever, with no one to accept her for who she is, tell her that her superhero identity and the guilt that comes with that doesn’t have to something she has to carry alone, she doesn’t need to resign herself to a life of loss and never being acknowledged for who she truly is. But her dad isn’t there for her, until the Spider Society is.
This is where I think there’s a shift in her Gwen’s character. She embraces her spider-identity under the Spider Society who understand the trauma and difficult choices that comes with being a Spiderperson, and starts to buy into the pessimistic ideology of “canon”.
The “canon” introduced by Miguel O’Hara suggests that the traumatic events that occur throughout a Spiderperson’s life is what is needed to ensure the multiverse’s stability. This can appeal to a lot of Spiderpeople, Gwen in this period of the story especially because if being unable to save your friend is crucial to the universe’s stability and to the spiderman narrative, then they can be assured they are heading in the right direction. People in the Spider Society like Miguel couldn’t save so many people despite being a superhero, they couldn’t “do both” as Pavitr and Miles expressed, so if they tell themselves they can only have one option, it erases the consequences of failing to do both.
And then because Gwen is so haunted by her father’s reaction, she chooses to once again withhold her actual feelings for Miles and not explain to him the difficult choice of choosing to lose people when it’s seemed like all Gwen’s done through the movie is lose. Their falling out is honestly a post in itself, so I’ll save that for some other time.
Let me know what you guys think :))

Gwen Stacy was risking so much visiting Miles.
The last time she saw her father, he was about to arrest her because he found out something he didn't like. As far as she knew their relationship was beyond repair
Jess and Miguel gave her another home. She was terrified of being sent back to her universe with no way back if she slipped up and made them mad
They told her not to see him but she did anyway because she missed him that much
And then she did get sent back to her universe, even though it turned out alright with her dad, it might not have. She could have been stranded in her universe with no home to go to. Maybe Hobie would've come for her but that's a maybe.
I don't get why people are blaming her. She's also fifteen, she made mistakes, she feels guilty for them, and seems to be determined to fix them by the end of the movie.

i finally saw across the spiderverse and i nEED TO DUMP MY THOUGHTS CAUSE I AM UNWELL
#spiderverse#atsv spoilers#sorry but im gonna be SO annoying about this movie and i need to gush about it#theres just sm to unpack#like how the wholeass movie is basically a huge coming out allegory ESPECIALLY gwen and its not even subtle about it#and trans gwen is 100% canon to me idc idc#her scene with her dad about how she hates that she can only show 'half' of herself??? GWEN I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE#im so happy she got more screentime too cause shes just such an iconic character#each moment with miles and his parents was so heartfelt and meaningful god theyre all so sweet#i was hesitant about gwen x miles going in#cause i rlly wanted them to stay platonic BUT im so board now idc their relationship brings me endless joy and they deserve eachother#miguel trying to bite someone using his huge fangs made me audibly moan#and hobie?? HOBIE?? him being such an older brother character was so good i ADORE HIM#and SPOT!!#how they turned what was a joke of a character into one of the most haunting and unearthly villains ive seen in animated movie was AMAZING#my ONLY nitpick is that i rlly wish characters like hobie pavitr and spiderbyte got more screentime??#but ofc theyll be in the next movie anyway so its fine#and the CHASE SEQUENCE#honestly i know calling something like 'peak cinema' is a meme but... IT WAS PEAK CINEMA#watching that scene is genuinely a core memory for me now im not even kidding#and rq but every line from scarlet spider had me howling i stg#this and into the spiderverse are EASILY both my fave movies ever and its not even close#last thing but the amount of detail put into miguels dumptruck alone should be enough for this movie to sweep at the oscars

i love how the entire movie miguel o’hara doesn’t realize that miles being an anomaly and miles having a spiderman story within the canon they have detected in the multiverse as well as affecting others canons like peter’s since last movie miles is the only reason he has mayday and is not the depressed guy he was in the first movie are two incompatible facts he both believes. he just cannot take these two pieces and realize the first cannot be true if the 2nd also is i am foaming at the mouth to see what actually caused that world miguel destroyed to be destroyed because i’m calling it now he is using the canon and anomalies as a way to wash his hands of personal responsibility and avoid processing the trauma he endured. i need to see the moment right now i need the come to god moment the build up is killing me and i am ravenous for the inevitable catharsis and i know it will destroy me in the best way.

Across the Spider-verse is 10/10 in animation, story, voice acting, and soundtrack (MILD spoilers)
To all the people who “Spider-Man can’t be black!” in 2018, Imma need y’all to hold that L indefinitely. Due to the concept of the multiverse, Spider-Man is literally all races, creeds, and backgrounds and it’s canon. There’s Indian, Muslima, paraplegic, Latino, and 4 different black Spider-people. The movie is 2hrs and 20-ish minutes, so PLEASE don’t bring your toddler cuz their attention span is gonna plummet an hour in. The plot of this movie is for the people who saw the first movie, so it’s matured with the original audience. Miguel O’Hara wants to preserve the multiverse (saving billions of lives), meaning each Spider-person’s story has to play out the same (get bit by a spider, your uncle dies, police captain dies). Miles Morales was NEVER supposed to be Spider-man (remember his spider came from Universe 42). Miguel’s all like “you’re not supposed to be Spider-Man but since you ARE Spider-Man, your police captain dad needs to die to keep your story consistent with the rest of us.” Miles response is “Hol’ up, you want me to sit back and let my dad die? I know these deaths make us who we are, but if we have the power to save people, then we should do the responsible thing and save them.” Both Miguel and Miles think they’re doing the responsible thing (letting canon play out vs saving lives regardless of canon). Miguel is lawful evil, believing the needs of the many outweigh the few. Miles’s very existence disrupts Spider-man canon, but he IS Spider-Man, whether he was fated to be or not. Also, Miguel keeps saying that the Spot is the huge threat to the multiverse then spends 15 minutes chasing down Miles, diverting a good portion of his resources to capturing him. HELLO, I thought you said the Spot >> Miles so why are you focusing on one kid and not the multiverse-ending superbeing?

soon to be coined genders. . ! — milescharic / moralescharic ; a gender related to miles morales (specifically when you think of him in the new spiderverse movie). this flag would consist of reds, blacks, and white as well as a lone purple stripe to symbolize how he could’ve became the prowler.
— similarly a charic gender related to miles42 ; i think this flag would have purples and blacks accompanied by a lone red stripe to symbolize how he could’ve been spiderman! the flags would parallel each other, ideally.
— a big sister / big brother gender ; a work in progress gender related to being a big sister/brother. includes the strife of being the oldest and the strong urge to care for those younger than you
— viatoric ; a gender related to the constellation of aether from genshin impact :]
— a song gender based off of winding road by man with a mission ; a really self indulgent gender based off that song! i think this flag would include icy light blues to invoke the feeling of traveling down a lone icy road ^_^
— a gender related to ryuseitai in some way, probably the group as a whole or their music (though i’ll have to check to make sure something like this hasn’t already been coined)
— a gender related to lyla ; specifically from the spiderverse movie.. i love her appearance in it!!

Okay I just gotta happy rant for a sec--
Like many folks, I already knew this having seen the first film back in 2018 but... holy shit. Holy shit. Spider-Verse is so fucking stunning. The story-telling. The art. The way the two combine seamlessly to make something so fantastic as what I just saw. I just. I don't know how to explain it. I just. I've never left a movie so stunned and captivated and frankly artistically inspired.
It reminded me of the art I wanted to create when I was younger. The stuff I wanted to fill my art books and sketchbooks with. Just grab a brush and paint. Add some magazine cutouts on top. Maybe even crayon? stickers whatever the hell came to mind, whatever I felt in that moment. Anything bright and messy and fun!! And I never did that. But frankly, I think I'm going to now.
That was such a beautiful movie with feeling that showed in every brush stroke of the city skyline or the pencil marks in The Spot especially when he was tense. I adored every little movement line from Rio's Puerto Rican flag in her finger snap to the simple and soft little wiggle lines of Peter B kissing his daughters head. Hobie's guitar!! All of Hobie?! I knew this going in but I'm very happy to say it once again swept me off my feet. I'm so grateful for the people behind these movies. The love and hard work shines through in every shot
