"In Washington D.C., a sophisticated sewage treatment plant is turning the capital’s waste into a form of capital: living capital that is fertilizing the gardens of farms of the Mid-Atlantic region and saving vast quantities of resources.
Described by the workers’ there as a “resource recovery plant,” D.C. Water run a biogas plant and high-quality fertilizer production in the course of their dirty duty to ensure the city’s waste finds a safe endpoint.
The nation’s capital is exceptional at producing waste from the toilet bowls of the 2.2 million people who live, work, and commute through the city and its suburbs.
Reporting by Lina Zeldovich reveals that rather than trucking it all to a landfill, D.C. Water extract an awful lot of value from the capital crap, by looking at it as a resource to send through the world’s largest advanced wastewater treatment plant, which uses a “thermal hydrolysis process” in which it is sterilized, broken down, and shipped off for processing into “Bloom,” a nitrogen-rich, slow-release fertilizer product.
The other “Black Gold”
At their facility in southwest Washington, huge aeration tanks percolate the poo of everyone from tourists to the President. After it’s all fed into enormous pressure cookers where, under the gravity of six earth atmospheres and 300°F, the vast black sludge is rendered harmless.
Next this “Black Gold,” as Zeldovich described it, is pumped into massive bacterial-rich tanks where microbes breakdown large molecules like fats, proteins, and carbs into smaller components, shrinking the overall tonnage of sewage to 450 tons per day down from 1,100 at the start of the process.
This mass-micro-munching also produces methane, which when fed into an onsite turbine, generates a whopping 10 megawatts of green energy which can power 8,000 nearby homes. [Note: Natural gas (which is mostly methane) is definitely greener than coal and oil, but it still causes a significant amount of emissions and greenhouse gases.] The 450 tons of remaining waste from the D.C. feces are sent into another room where conveyor belts ring out excess fluid before feeding it through large rollers which squash it into small congregate chunks.
D.C. Water sends this to another company called Homestead Gardens for drying, aging, and packaging before it’s sold as Bloom.
“I grow everything with it, squashes, tomatoes, eggplants,” Bill Brower, one of the plant’s engineers, tells Zeldovich. “Everything grows great and tastes great,” he adds.
“And I’m not the only one who thinks so. We’ve heard from a lot of people that they’ve got the best response they’ve ever seen from the plants. Particularly with leafy greens because that nitrogen boost does well with leafy plants. And the plants seem to have fewer diseases and fewer pests around—probably because Bloom helps build healthy soils.”
While farms around the country are facing nutrient depletion in soils from over-farming, turning to synthetic fertilizers to make up the difference, introducing more such thermal hydrolysis plants could truly revolutionize the way humans look at their feces—as a way of restoring the country’s soils rather than polluting them. As Mike Rowe would say, it only takes a person who’s willing to get their hands dirty."

Did Tarn ever get mad at the nurse or vice versa during the carriage/marriage?
(It's absolutely Tarn’s fault. He tried doing oral, but you shrieked at what's under his mask. For very good reasons, even if you did knee his face and got Nickel involved.)
Your servos are absolutely professional, face and field schooled in medical neutrality.
You inwardly seethe and rage at the mech's complete stupidity.
The exposed mechanisms of Tarn’s face shutter and click as you dig out the infection with a scalpel and scrap out the dead mesh and wiring and smooth out the flayed edges. Not even the pre-round treatment could fully wash away all the corrosion and slime of dead nanites.
If he wants to refuse a very recommended Class-A pain patch, then fine, you're not stopping his sadomasochistic, self-inflicted tendencies.
You're already debriding his half-rusted face with an open panel in a clean towel. You can't bring yourself to care, especially when you had to dip your arms inside a Class-C medical sealant because not only your idiot of a donor allowed a very treatable infection to set deep and fester under the mask and you had to squirt a treatment up into your valve and slather it across the folds and down your legs, Nickel needs to scope your gestational chamber to check if there's contamination in the fluids.
And because you're carrying and the stupid fuck under your hands has to go under several rounds of treatment, Nickel is currently whipping up more because she's the only one that's not a potential health hazard for the nice, sterile pharmaceutical corner.
Through the entire process, the knee that touched the active infection aches because you ferociously scrubbed it clean and applied the treatment, and thick, cold sludge is slowly, ever-so-slowly dripping out of your confused valve.
There's a set schedule and your frame has gotten used to it, especially your pelvis.
(And until Tarn is fully treated and all his masks make several runs through the autoclave, your valve will keep itself warm with the Thing's company and your own hands.)
“Tilt back,” you command and he follows, and you stretch out the heavy bottom lip at the corner with a thumb, pulling it taunt to get a full view of the rusted protoform, which slowly crawls to his jawline.
Tarn's pretty. He has strong features and scars on the cleaner half of his face. There are scars that bisect his lips and several across his nose that trail into the raging cesspool.
You wonder if that's how it started: a facial injury and no care for preventative measures and his weird tendency towards self-inflicted pain.
“Breathe in,” you command, placing the scalpel at the slimy-brown portion of the infected lip. And he inhales through his nose, the exposed cabling of his check and temple twitch, nervecircuits spark and spasm at the air exposure, and in a few parts it was absolutely necessary to dig so deep you can see grey endoskeleton.
Tarn is surprisingly expressive as well. Pupil mechanisms fully dilated, corners of his optics pulling, nose flaring as he remains stiff, courtesy of the med-berth's partial frame-paralyzation.
Well, you did warn Tarn, and he isn't asking for a pain patch, even now when you're deliberately giving him a moment.
This will be the most excruciating part of the ordeal. The mouth has many specialized sensory suites and pressure sites. Plus, you need to excise the infected inner lip as well. Perhaps the gumline, too.
Tarn isn't a newbuild. His profession deals with frame functions and processes. He’s far more knowledgeable than the average lay-mech of sensory mechanics.
And he has your comm line to literally ask for the damn patch.
“Breathe out,” you command, and he exhales. You make the first scoop, and to his credit, Tarn doesn't flinch, nor did you have to command the med-berth to fully paralyze him.

Symphony's Journey - Step Four, 8 Months
===CW===
Chronic physical pain
Emotional breakdowns
Time blindness
Suicide briefly mentioned (neither of them are suicidal)
In a dark, dusty room, where discarded pizza boxes and dirty clothes are carelessly scattered, Symphony lays in her dirty bed sheets that are barely covering the mattress anymore. She wears unchanged underwear alone over her fur pelt. She scratches an itch on her stunted maw with a tiny claw and readjusts to better support her tail nub. The feeling of her paw pads against the mattress and messy bed sheets help ground her while pain swims through her body. Her chest rises less than usual and sudden bursts of sharp pain cause winces. This is all nothing new to her. Her favorite comfort streamer's laughs travel out from her laptop speakers and she feels a mix of envy and appreciation. She can't remember if this is the third stream of theirs that she's watched today, or the tenth. She disabled the clock on her laptop a long time ago. Her stomach and bladder dictate time, sections separated in terms of how long ago she managed to force herself from her bed.
A muffled knock breaks through the seemingly endless cycle of binge watching, though even that isn't enough to pry her from her tomb. The knock comes back louder, more frantic. Soon afterwards it's joined by the jingle of keys. Symphony almost doesn't recognize the sound of her front door opening, but could never forget those footsteps. Light spills in as her bedroom door flies open, nearly slammed against the wall by a very worried tigerfolk. Their face says it all, that look of horror seems so overdramatic to her. She had been living in this filth for… a while, the thick coating of dust visible from the other side of the room was no surprise to her; the dust bunnies kept her company. Their eyes witness the rest of the container once considered a bedroom. They nearly trip over themself as they come to a sudden stop after nearly rushing towards her. With shortening breaths, Stylus slowly steps towards her bed, their arms ready to hug should one be requested; or severely needed. Stylus' eyes lock onto hers yet she can't even look in their direction.
If she could see their expression, she imagined it would be no different to if they had found a struggling, baby bird fallen out of its nest. Her stomach became even more upset. Clearly using all of their self-control, Stylus asks, "What happened!?" Symphony can't bring herself to face them, "…Nothing" she manages to force out. Out of the corner of her eyes she can see the erratic movement of their tail. "It's not nothing!" Stylus insists. They lean over the bed and place a handpaw on her forehead, but it was nothing like her dreams. Instead of a longing stare deep into her eyes with a content smile, it was an agape maw and borderline panicked eyes darting across her unwashed, aching body. The warm, gentle touch of their handpaw pulled her out of the sludge of blended time, and she was back in her apartment in regular time; if only for a while.
Stylus composes themself enough to explain, "I got worried because you stopped updating your fanfictions. I thought something had made you busy, o-or you had some sort of stomach bug but-…" Stylus' watery eyes caught the little light that found this place, "…I had no idea it had gotten this terrible." "Just your standard issue transspecies suffering, usual around this time of the treatment" is what she would have quipped had pain not devoured her ability to speak long sentences. Instead, she lays there like a broken fossil for them to inspect in all of its tragedy. Stylus carefully peels back the bed sheet she had repurposed as a blanket, causing her to wince as it brushes up against several clumps of matted fur. Stylus almost drops the bed sheet in shock before being reassured by her pained smile. That look of concern, she hates how much of a burden she is. They continue dragging it until it falls limp and pathetic to the floor, revealing the consequences of neglect. Clumps like the heads of mushrooms cling all over her. Symphony couldn't stand to see their reaction,
"…just go" "What, no!?" they exclaim, "Your fur is matting all over, I can't leave you like this. When was the last time you bathed?" Symphony steals a glance at them, and feels a slash across her heart. "…don't remember" slips through her sore lips. Despite them not being the one in excruciating pain, they looked to be on the verge of wasted tears. She almost suspected them to be crocodile tears, how could anyone earnestly care so deeply about her? Stylus pulls from their bag a food shaker and a soft looking comb. "I can't allow this to get any worse. I'm going to pour some cornstarch onto the mats and gently brush them with this until you're not in pain anymore. I need you to trust me and stay calm for however long this takes." That last part was directed more towards themself than her, she could tell. She could think of much worse things than spending hours with them, even if it would be physically uncomfortable at best.
She takes in a calming breath and nods. Stylus wastes no time starting, shaking cornstarch onto one of the bigger mats. Their comforting touch she feels as they press down the mat with their free hand and begin combing. Each time they begin at the tips of the fur and worked their way down, keeping an attentive ear cocked towards her at all times. Whenever she winced, Stylus looked to share the same pain. This went on for hours, yet she could still happily spend more time receiving their sole attention. Eventually all of the mats are removed, it was almost a shame to no longer have an excuse for them to brush her fur. While this didn't solve the issue of her screaming joints, she didn't have to worry about her pelt feeling like it was about to rip itself off of her body. She thinks about what it will be like to walk around like this, in this limbo phase, and she's grateful she's misplaced her shoes.
"There, much better" Stylus says, "Right?" She's glad she doesn't have to lie about being okay nor tell them no, either option would likely cause waterfalls to erupt from their eyes. She nods and Stylus draws in a deep breath just to sigh deeper than she's ever seen them sigh before. They flop their upper half onto the free space on her mattress and rest their maw on their crossed arms. Their gaze looks a million light years away as they stare at the blinded window. They face her and she sees such profound sadness in their eyes. They're like hooks that embed themselves deep into her heart, capable of ripping it out of her chest if they wanted to. Instead Stylus, despite being an emotional wreck themselves, is gentle with her heart; as they always are. She suffers a cyclone of unidentifiable emotions.
Stylus places a handpaw on her own, spinning the cyclone faster. She hunches and rolls over on her side away from Stylus, tears becoming too overwhelming to hold back anymore. She hears Stylus' quick steps as they try their best not to panic as they make their way over to the side she's now facing. Ugly noises join the dust in the air as snot and warm tears join the food stains on the mattress. Stylus is using all of their self-control to not scoop up the crying mess that was Symphony. Slowly, they bring their handpaw closer to her eyes to wipe her tears, only for Symphony to snatch it out of the air and pull most of their arm into a tight embrace. She settles for this for now as anymore movement would make her roar in agony; though actually roaring was still unfairly impossible. All she wants is to escape into her daydreams, but Stylus' whines and the cries of her aching body are too distracting. She is stuck in the present moment. At least she was no longer sitting on her tail nub. It had gone numb who knows how long ago, she thought the pain would end faster if time blended together. Stylus' shocked expression brakes down into a teary mess.
"It's okay…" is drowned by the pain and her undeveloped maw remains tightly clenched. Conversation was becoming difficult. She uses the warmth and softness of their arm to ground herself. Stylus keeps losing the words in their maw until finally, "Why didn't you reach out to me!?" they sound almost betrayed. She focuses through the pain, taking strategic breaths to make sure she had enough to speak. "I'm not worth it-" "YES YOU ARE!" they fail to hold back, causing Symphony to jump, shooting pain throughout her back. Stylus looks mortified and their streams of tears become thicker. "I- I'm s-so sorry" "It's okay" she croaks out.
"No, it's not, nothing about this is!" they place their other handpaw on her arms. In all of their years together, this is the most pain she's seen them in. Tears weren't a rare sight from them. She's seen tears of joy from the sight of baby ducks; tears of sadness from when their favorite characters get killed off; and tears of rage from when they defended her from her biological family. These tears are new. Her laptop, still with the stream open, was sitting worryingly close to the edge of her mattress. Stylus notices her staring through their tears and places it safely on the floor. She tries to speak a full sentence but something pops at the back of her throat.
"Volume…" she manages to croak out while pointing downwards. Stylus lowers the volume on the stream. She didn't want the only noises filling the room to be of them both in pain. They stayed like this, in an awkward embrace while draining the tears from their eyes, for long enough for the streamer to go on break. With a strained voice Stylus breaks the silence, "I could have been here the whole time, preventing this… why didn't you call for me?" "…didn't want help" she replies. Confusion overtakes their tear soaked face, "Why not?" Symphony looks away from their concerned eyes. "…not worth effort" she says. It looks as if Stylus still has plenty of tears left to give but they hold them back by burying their face into the mattress. They take a deep breath in as they look up to the ceiling.
"Stop saying that…" they demand, "stop saying you're not worth it!" Symphony, even if she could speak, was at a loss for words. It was draining to block out the pain enough for conversation, and she was so tired. For the first time in their friendship they sit in uncomfortable silence. The faint screams and goofy sound effects from whatever game her comfort streamer is playing now provide a distraction from her labored breaths and Stylus' restless tail bumping into things. "…just want sleep…" Symphony pushes out. "I can close the door if-" "…just want forever sleep- not suicidal" she adds in that clarification despite the added stress on her vocal chords. Stylus thinking that she was suicidal would shatter both of their hearts. "…until I wake up… correct body…" Stylus hangs on every word. "…miserable life-" "Don't say that" Stylus interrupts, "stop talking about your life that way." Their brows furrow and the corners of their maw's lips quiver. Symphony was not in the mood for an argument, yet despite that,
"Why not?" she replies. Stylus huffs in annoyance through their nostrils. "Even if your life has been difficult, even though you bare the scars of battles that you didn't deserve to fight in the first place-" their sentence was cut off as they force down the cry building in their throat, "You-… you've still lived a life filled with such vibrant colours. You've accomplished so much and you still have a long journey ahead of you. You have a real family now, one that will shelter you from any storm or blizzard that comes your way. You have-!" Stylus cuts themself off and hesitates to continue. "You have me, don't I-…" they look away from her, overcome with guilt. "Sorry, that's not fair to say" "Say it" Symphony demands, yet they stay silent. Attention stolen by their screaming joints, she lets it go. Stylus looks as if they want to say something but stays frozen for a while. Then finally, "Is it okay to bunt you? I-… I just really need to be close to you…" they say while looking to the floor. Symphony is pleasantly taken off guard.
"Even closer?" she questions, and they nod enthusiastically without hesitation. Symphony's body has finally quieted down enough for some movement. With a weary arm she gently grabs their cheek fur and slowly pulls their face closer until their head is resting on her pillow. Looking deep into their eyes she doesn't see a millimeter of the discomfort she expects their awful posture to be giving them right now. Instead, their eyes are lighting up and settling into a simmer of contentment. With their gazes interlocked and her arms comfortably wrapped around theirs, with Stylus softly stroking her face fur with their free handpaw past the point of when she started making a content rumbling noise in her throat, for just a few moments the pain felt so distant that she nearly forgot about it. They bunt each other and Symphony starts to feel drowsy from the sound of their breathing syncing. "…won't run away… from this life…" she assures, "I promise." A silent tear from Stylus runs down the pillow and lands on her maw before soaking into the foul smelling fabric. Her comfort streamer becomes increasingly more incoherent as she drifts ever closer to slumber, with the last thing she hears before rest being something gently whispered in her ear.

As if the sewage on our beaches and the E. Coli in our rivers and the Thérèse Coffey in our government weren’t exciting enough, neoliberalism has elevated customer service to the next level by putting parasites in our drinking water! Excitingly, hundreds of people are believed to have been infected by cryptosporidiosis and that could be the tip of the iceberg.
It’s understood a damaged air valve allowed animal waste into the water supply because it’s more profitable to not maintain these things, and a system where essential utilities are run for profit, rather than human need, makes much more sense. Only a natural monopoly could allow corporations to get away with this level of exploitation.
A spokesperson for neoliberalism gushed: “Things are going brilliantly! We are slowly but surely destroying the idea of public service and creating a system where people have no choice but to give us money, no matter how much we rip them off. God bless Margaret Thatcher!”
Indeed.
Following numerous reports of stomach pains and an unpleasant taste in tap water, authorities sensibly told the public the water was safe to drink for weeks. When the problem was finally identified, they didn’t bother notifying many of the people in the catchment area because who could be bothered? It’s understood the water company took inspiration from the lead contamination in Flint, Michigan because all the best ideas come from the US.
South West Water has been so on top of the situation that its staff were telling the public the water was safe to drink, even as official advice was to boil before drinking. Obviously, boiled water will definitely not burn your insides and anyone who doesn’t want to bathe in animal waste is a stupid socialist. Poor water quality is the price we all have to pay for executive salaries and shareholder dividends.
South West Water initially claimed its treatment facilities were not to blame for the parasites, but now it’s taking full credit for its successes and looks forward to announcing record annual profits. I’m unclear if the company has done a Boeing on any whistle blowers yet, but there is still time…
It looks like the projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhoea might only be the start because scientists say the parasite could still be in the incubation period. Excitingly, it’s hoped it could take control of its host’s motor-functions, turning them into Last of Us zombies. It remains unclear whether this hope is well-founded or just wishful thinking, but a zombie apocalypse is the only way neoliberalism could get better at this point.
Among the first people infected by the zombie parasite were attendees at the Brixham Pirate Festival who only had themselves to blame for opting against drinking gin. Experts say more affordable options for the safety conscious than gin include drinking your own urine and drinking nothing at all.
Shops are already running out of bottled water as the sensible British people do what they do best - panic buy. We’ve not seen this level of forward planning since toilet roll ran out during the Covid-19 outbreak. Good luck trying to get zombies to adhere to a lockdown though.
If you thought the cryptosporidium parasites weren’t enough, another exciting upgrade South West Water has introduced to our water system is flooding! The company was responsible for an impressive 58,249 overflow incidents last year and is being sued for turning the sea into a brown sludge that is definitely safe for swimmers. One of the water company’s most spectacular achievements was when sewage pipes burst in Exeter, resulting in a whopping 240 tanker loads of sewage each day. No wonder it has been awarded the Thérèse Coffey Prize for Indifference to Human Health.
Reassuringly, bosses are understood to be working on a tiered system with water quality that used to be free set to become Premium Water (AKA drinkable water) with a monthly subscription fee of £450. If you’re not willing to pay your fair share, you’ll have the option of the cheaper Cryptosporidium Water at only £300 a month. Personally, I think you should opt for the latter to help advance medical science.
As you can see, neoliberalism is brilliant at taking every good thing we had in the last century and making it much more expensive, and of much lower quality, while screaming that everyone who opposes neoliberalism is a lunatic who doesn’t understand economics!
Don’t you love neoliberalism’s ability to make you pay for things you never needed before neoliberalism, like bottled water or filters? Don’t you love… progress?

two of my friends’s fursonas as business animals! Gander, the CFO of Sparleco, and Cinnamon Apple, the head of HR.
Gander belongs to @maddillus!
One of the first associates. Dr. Pyranine was informed of a large beast sighted in the dark alleyways near Sparleco’s headquarters. One night they found him, a lumbering creature covered in sludge, consuming the corpse of another citizen. He was different than other consumers however, with a more stable, powerful form, and the ability to communicate. Pyranine convinced Gander to allow them to test on him, and begin properly developing the A-Serum. He is much larger and stronger than other associates due to his cannibalistic tendencies. Pyranine has him “take care of business” when dissenters attempt to infiltrate the company.
Cinnamon apple belongs to Purpletrillium!
She was commodified, and began to fall ill- before degrading into a consumer, they were able to receive treatment through the Associate program at Sparleco. They quickly rose in the ranks in Human resources, many of the higher ups getting “fired” or “quitting”. She spends most of the time in their office crying or with the door locked… better come back later!

What Is an Industrial Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and How Does It Work?
An Industrial Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is a facility specifically designed to treat wastewater produced by industrial processes before it is released into the environment or reused. Industrial effluent often contains high levels of pollutants, including heavy metals, chemicals, organic matter, and toxins that can harm ecosystems and public health if discharged untreated. ETPs play a crucial role in minimizing this environmental impact by removing or neutralizing these contaminants.
How Does an Effluent Treatment Plant Work?
ETPs operate through a series of treatment stages, typically divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment processes. Each stage focuses on removing different types of contaminants from the wastewater.
Primary Treatment: The primary stage involves removing large solid particles and floating matter, such as oils, grease, and debris. This is typically done through processes like screening, sedimentation, and skimming. Screening filters out large solids, while sedimentation allows suspended particles to settle at the bottom of the tank. Skimming removes any remaining floating oil and grease. After this stage, the effluent is free from most solid pollutants but still contains dissolved contaminants.
Secondary Treatment: In this stage, the focus shifts to breaking down organic matter in the effluent. This is often done through biological processes where microorganisms, such as bacteria, consume and degrade organic contaminants. Activated sludge, a common method in secondary treatment, involves aerating the effluent to foster bacterial growth, which helps break down organic pollutants. Other processes, like trickling filters, also encourage microbial activity to reduce organic content. By the end of this stage, much of the organic pollution has been degraded, though some dissolved solids and nutrients remain.
Tertiary Treatment: Tertiary treatment is the final stage, which refines the effluent to meet regulatory standards for discharge. It may involve advanced chemical treatments, filtration, and disinfection processes to remove residual contaminants, nutrients, and pathogens. Methods like chlorination, UV radiation, or ozonation are often used for disinfection, ensuring that harmful microorganisms are eliminated. This stage can also include methods to remove nitrogen, phosphorus, and other dissolved solids. Once treated, the effluent is safe for discharge or reuse.
Benefits of Industrial Effluent Treatment Plants
ETPs offer numerous environmental and regulatory benefits. They help industries stay compliant with environmental regulations, avoiding potential fines and legal issues. By treating wastewater, these plants reduce the environmental footprint of industrial activities, protecting local water bodies, soil, and biodiversity. Additionally, some ETPs are designed to allow for the recycling and reuse of treated water, promoting sustainable water management and reducing water consumption.
Conclusion
Industrial Effluent Treatment Plants are essential facilities that help industries manage wastewater responsibly. By following a structured, multi-stage treatment process, they effectively remove harmful contaminants, ensuring that the treated effluent is safe for discharge or reuse. ETPs not only help companies meet environmental standards but also contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
