WHISKY SOUR - SCOTCH WHISKY SOUR - or SCOTTISH WHISKY SOUR
Classic Cocktail - A true Scotch Whisky Sour is 150 years old, yet you’ll still find it in the trendiest bars. Give this cocktail a go with your favourite scotch! With egg white included, it is sometimes called a Boston sour; when the whisky used is a Scotch, it is called a Scotch sour.
The Whisky Sour was invented in the 1860s, but British Navy sailors🇬🇧 had been drinking something very similar for a long time before that. Fresh and clean water was difficult to find on long sea journeys, so sailors commonly used whisky, rum and other spirits to substitute.
In the 19th century aside from lack of clean water, many sailors suffered from scurvy, a potentially fatal disease caused in part by lack of vitamin C. Sailors consumed lemons and limes to help prevent the disease from spreading. For many years, sailors on the sea drank whisky sours. Their popularity grew when they finally arrived on the shores of the United States.
There are three main references on the official record. The first record is written in Jerry Thomas' seminal 1862 book, The Bartender's Guide: How to Mix Drinks. The second reference comes from a Wisconsin newspaper, the Waukesha Plainsdealer in 1870. The final record is in 1872 and states that Elliot Staub, a former ship steward, "invented" a drink called the Whisky Sour in a bar in Iquique, (then part of Peru) now Iquique is a port city and commune in northern Chile, 🇨🇱 after the Pacific War (1879).
Ingredients
2 ounces Scotch whisky
3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
1/2 ounce simple syrup
1/2 ounce egg white (optional)
Garnish: Angostura bitters
Steps
1 Add Scotch, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white, if using, to a shaker, and dry-shake for 30 seconds without ice.
2. Add ice and shake again for 15-20 seconds, until well-chilled.
3. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice, or into a coupe without ice.
4. Garnish with 3-4 drops of Angostura bitters.
Egg white adds viscosity and mouthfeel to cocktails and drinks such as sours only taste their best when made with added egg white. Egg white can also add an attractive foamy head to cocktails and the amount of foam produced can be extenuated using a “Dry Shake” refers to shaking ingredients in a cocktail shaker without ice.
Although raw egg whites are optional in the Whisky Sour, they are required in drinks such as the Ramos Gin Fizz, Amaretto Sour, Whisky Sour, Clover Club, Tequila Sour, Sloe Gin Fizz, Pisco Sour, Eggnog and White Lady. You can also use dried egg white powder.
Any recipe containing egg requires a vigorous dry shake for at least 30 seconds to ensure that the egg white combines with the other ingredients and produces a smooth, frothy texture.
Do remember that drinking and serving alcohol responsibly is a must. Cheers drinking classic cocktails — safely!

People don’t take advantage of the fact N. Brio has worked as a bartender very often, and it’s a crying shame, because bartenders see some crazy and morbidly fascinating shit in their line of work.
I mean, bartenders see fights and other drunken antics constantly, including horny drunken antics. Brio has probably seen so much shit by now that nothing surprises him anymore. Add his scientific background and history with Cortex, and you get a man who’s barely phased by anything.
I imagine at Castle Cortex they have nights where Brio sets up a bar and mixes drinks for everyone. He has an extensive knowledge of cocktails, including the complicated ones, and the ones with dirty names.
BONUS: Here’s what I think everyone’s drinking habits are:
N. Gin doesn’t get too many drinks from Brio only because he already suffers from headaches due to his missile, and he hates hangovers. He likes a bit of rum and coke, light on the rum.
N. Tropy doesn’t get anything too fancy; he’s more about the quality of booze than how pretty it looks. That being said, his favorite cocktail is an old-fashioned.
Cortex is the opposite of Tropy in that he loves cocktails that are pretty and complicated. He doesn’t give a shit if people judge him for it. If he’s not having a cocktail, he normally drinks red wine. His favorite cocktails are piña coladas, magaritas, and strawberry daiquiris.
N. Brio himself has a very particular favorite cocktail. He happened to watch “Monsters VS Aliens” once and saw the character Dr. Cockroach make something called an “Atomic Gin Fizz”. Brio got excited and decided to come up with his own version of the drink. It took a lot of time (and explosions) but he came up with a viable recipe. It’s similar to a sloe gin fizz, but with a few added chemicals to give it a kick. If he’s not in the mood for a cocktail, however, he’ll just drink vodka.
The mutants also order drinks occasionally. Dingodile likes hard liquors and beers, Pinstripe likes Manhattans and Long Island Iced Teas, Tiny likes mint juleps, and Tawna likes Bloody Marys. Ripper Roo is not permitted to drink, as if he gets a hold of a stash of alcohol, he will drink ALL of it.

Rose Cocktails - American English French & More
Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue
Sugar is sweet and so are you. That classic poem with thousands of variations certainly describes the color of all these Rose cocktails. Whether its classic, American, English or French, most of the Rose drinks are actually a faint red or pink depending on whether you modify the recipe to use more of the reddish ingredients or not.
Definitely a flowery feminine favorite, you may want to mix one of these drinks for her on Valentine's Day to pair with chocolate. Just follow the guidelines and be sure to stock your home bar in advance to match the chocolates she will be unwrapping.
The classic Rose cocktail is probably the lightest, but all these dainty drink recipes are light to medium and will match well for a variety of occasions, including brunch, Mother's Day and ladies night libations. Don't forget the flower petals.
Behind The Bar - How To Make Rose Cocktails At Home
Rose Cocktail Drink Recipe:
2 oz dry vermouth
1 oz kirsch eau de vie (kirschwasser, German for cherry water)
½ oz raspberry or pomegranate syrup
cherry for garnish
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry.
American Rose Cocktail:
1 ½ oz brandy
½ tsp licorice liqueur
1 tsp grenadine syrup
3 - 4 oz Champagne
sliced peach
Shake first three ingredients (not the Champagne :) with ice and strain into a chilled wine glass or flute. Top the drink with Champagne and garnish with an optional peach slice.
French Rose Cocktail:
2 oz gin
¾ oz dry vermouth
¾ oz cherry brandy
maraschino cherry
Stir ingredients with ice and fine strain drink into a chilled glass or flute. Garnish with the cherry.
English Rose Cocktail:
2 oz gin
1 oz dry vermouth
1 oz apricot brandy
⅜ oz lemon juice
¼ oz grenadine
maraschino cherry for garnish
Add all of the recipe ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass (rimmed with sugar, optional). Garnish drink with a maraschino cherry.
History Of The Rose Cocktail
First Published
Johnny Mitta of the Chatham Bar in Paris, France is credited for the Rose Cocktail recipe which became popular in the 1920s and 1930s, but there were several prior and since then there have been a staggering number of tweaks, variations and spin-off formulations for various Rose drinks published over the years.* Heck, even the International Bartending Association has had a hard time deciding which one to endorse. The fourth 'official' IBA Rose Cocktail recipe, and counting, was released in 2012 and is listed on the ecard above. This follows at least three different versions the organization had previously sanctioned in 1961, 1987, 1993 and 2004.†
What's In A Name?
That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
~ Juliet
This frequently referenced quote from William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet is the perfect segue for introducing the Française Rouge with cherry brandy, kirsch and dry gin which is essentially a Rose Cocktail (French Style No. 2).†,1 Another similar recipe is the Big Four cocktail made with cherry brandy, kirschwasser and French vermouth.2
If you want a ‘rose’ drink that broadly appeals to both men and women, the Jack Rose cocktail is a timeless tipple that also has the red flower color due to the pomegranate / raspberry syrup, depending on the recipe. Its namesake's questionable past and potentially sordid history caused many bartenders to change the name of this drink to the Royal Smile though, hoping to sweeten slumping sales due to Bald Jack's famous trial.
Run For The Roses
You'd probably think that one of these Rose cocktails would be the official drink of the Kentucky Derby's Run for the Roses along the same lines as the Preakness' Black Eyed Susan cocktail, the Kentucky Oaks' Oaks Lily drink or the Belmont Stakes' formerly official White Carnation cocktail, but that's not so. Theirs is the Mint Julep.
Its a horse of a different color of course, or is it? Julep may be derived from the word gul-ab, a Persian rosewater drink where gul = rose and ab = water, which lost its floral flavor and now means a sweet drink with sugar and water or simple syrup.
Mark Your Calendars
A couple days each year are set aside to stop and smell the roses so to speak. What better way to honor this gorgeous flower than to toast its beauty with a Rose cocktail?
April 29 - National Peace Rose Day
June 12 - National Red Rose Day
Neither of these dates should be confused with National Rosé Day though. Its a type of wine which is partially colored by grape skins that's celebrated annually on the second Saturday in June. Cheers!

Bourbon Cooler
From the look of this drink, you really have no way of telling how it tastes. It looks juicy and that you're likely to get a cranberry or sloe gin sweetness. Actually the Bourbon Cooler is pretty spicy and dry. This comes from it being mainly a Bourbon & Soda with dashes of orange bitters and peppermint schnapps. It all adds up to a more intensified bourbon flavor, with the peppermint and baking spices of orange bitters accentuating what bourbon already tastes like. Even after sipping a while, it is hard to fathom this cocktail. Why the pineapple spear? Why is is pink? That's grenadine, by the way. But why? Coolers, as the category goes, are a loose form of highball drink that usually has a small component of peppermint schnapps to give you that chilly afterbreath. They almost always have soda in them as well. The pineapple spear reminds me of the Japanese Fizz, and there is something to taking an American whiskey and making it seem more exotic in a cocktail. That's what the Tiki movement is all about, after all.
