started this art about a year ago and planned for it to go with a bigger post about my ideas for angler slimes, but since then a lot of things have changed and will be revised! don't think i'm gonna finish this but it looks nice anyway

the biology of slime rancher

my friend @chickennuggetonastick and i are extremely, super duper normal about the slime rancher video games and we have developed a lot of speculative headcanons about the universe!! here are just some of them so far: SLIME BASICS

Slimes are a taxon of alien lifeforms native to the Far, Far Range. They are generated from the strange slimy substance of the Slime Sea, and new slimes either emerge from the ground via Slime Sea liquid deposits, or they emerge from the sea itself. They're made of a mineral-and-water based sludge and don't yet have a confirmed method of reproduction, though they're very numerous and many species seem to be specialized for specific diets and environments. Speaking of diets, slimes do seek out and metabolize food, but not for the same reasons that Earth animals do—all slimes are actually slowly crystallizing over time, and in order to maintain their goopy state, they have to eat. Metabolizing food items provides the slime energy and the building blocks for their bodies to continue making slime material, but most importantly, the chemical process releases heat, keeping the slime warm and reducing the rate of crystallization.

The crystallization never actually stops, though, so slimes need to eat regularly or they will "petrify" into a solid, dormant state.

Dousing a petrified slime with water will briefly return it to its goopy state and give it a chance to get a bite to eat. (This also can explain why spraying hungry largos in-game delays the time it takes for them to go feral.)

Slimes' bodies also compartmentalize the crystallizing parts of their bodies into large chunks and occasionally expel them; these are plorts, and as all ranchers know, they're useful for humans and can be sold for lots of money.

HOW DO SLIMES EAT?

All slimes need to do to get food into their systems is engulf it (kind of like an amoeba). Many slimes have evolved mouthparts or teeth, but these don't actually aid in the processing of the food; in carnivorous slimes, they're used to keep moving prey like chickens in place for digestion, and many fruit-eating slimes use their mouthparts to remove fruit from trees for ease of engulfing.

Feral slimes are very hungry slimes that have already begun to partially crystallize (this is why all feral slimes have "teeth", even if they did not have them before going feral. The teeth are sharp deposits of crystal). They attack anything in sight even if they're not carnivorous because they're super desperate to keep themselves from going dormant. 

This loss of rational thinking is what may lead feral slimes to ingest plorts of different types, which transforms them into tarrs.

TARRS

The tarr transformation in a slime completely transforms and mutates the original slime's anatomy. The slime's membrane will no longer be tolerant to water, and dousing a tarr in water or throwing it into the slime sea will dissolve its membrane entirely, leaving behind the slime material of the original slime. This material will, over time, eventually emerge from the ground or the slime sea as a new slime that does not retain any of the memories, experiences, or personality it had before becoming a tarr.

the slime sea is a whole other can of worms that I'll probably get into later but yeah!! i like slimes

Video games I think the Seven would like

These are all games that I have played 👍

Percy-> Dadish. Loves the dialogue. Gets Annabeth to do several levels for him, and if she can’t do it, they ask Nico. Does dances to the soundtrack when he thinks he’s alone. Beat Hot Dog in one try and won’t shut up about it.

Annabeth-> Sims 4. Spends hours just making the characters and whole days making the houses. Makes Pinterest boards for her landscaping + decorating. When she’s frustrated with somebody, she makes them as a sim, puts them in the pool, and removes the ladder. Prints out screenshots of their death and tapes it to the person in question’s door.

Jason-> Spiritfarer. Guy loves his feels. When he first finished Alice’s quest line, he walked around the whole day like a kicked puppy and everybody was like “what’s wrong?” And he just goes “my hedgehog died” and breaks down in the middle of the dining hall. He finishes Elena’s quest the fastest and it gives him deja vu.

Piper-> Chants of Sennaar. Likes the connection of cultures aspect of the game. Makes it through the Abbey, Fortress, and Garden easy peasy, but when she gets into the Galleries, she gets really fucking scared of the monster (just like me for real). She gets Annabeth to do that part for her and Leo laughs at her and offers to do it but gets killed immediately. She laughs at him. She keeps Annabeth and Leo around for moral support.

Leo-> Slime Rancher. Does a stupid southern accent every time he plays it around other people. Goes “yeehaw” every ten seconds. Ends everyday by partying with his fire slimes because he reprogrammed them so they wouldn’t hurt him. Has no clue what the story is about because he doesn’t read a single letter and just goes with the flow.

Hazel-> Papa’s Freezeria. Makes it a point to memorize the basics of every customer’s order. Vocalizes her frustrations out loud when she gets a grade less than 100% on building. “What do you mean, Bruna Romano? Did I not put enough godforsaken bananas on your freaking sundae?” Hates the Rico’s Chiliworks minigame. Loves the Breakfast Blast minigame.

Frank-> Stardew Valley. Avoids the mines because they kind of scare him. Asks Hazel to do it for him but she’s scared of them too, so they ask Leo. They have five chests full of ore and are forty levels down after thirty minutes. Frank tries to be friends with everyone EXCEPT Pierre because Piper told him he was an asshole. Marries Maru every time.

Viktor Humphries headcanons!!

+ Had a huge punk/alt phase from his teens to his mid twenties. He still appreciates and listens to the music and follows the ideals, but doesn’t dress the part anymore out of convenience

+ Also a big fan of folk music

+ His favorite largo is a tabby rad. Can’t pick a favorite slime that isn’t a largo because it’s too hard to pick from all the wonderful slimes around!!

+ That being said, his favorite slimes to study are rads, quantums, and mosaics

+ Didn’t start enjoying school until college. Liked learning, but HATED school. Especially high school

+ Low pain tolerance unless he’s actively working. Stubs his toe getting out of bed? He is dying. Boom slime blows up in his hands while he’s researching it? Equivalent to a light breeze.

+ Audhd

+ Sometimes faints when he stands. Does not know why (just like me fr). Scared the ever loving shit out of Beatrix when this happened in front of her. She thought he just dropped dead in front of her

+ Struggles with a bit of derealization after spending so much time in simulations

+ Favorite cookie is a sugar cookie

tangle slime biology (slime rancher)

Some drawings and notes on some of my tangle slime headcanons!

Because they live in the desert and contain water, i think most tangle slimes would have some sort of plant growing in them because they're like little oases for plant life (which kind ties into their association with oases in the game, haha!)

I've mentally separated all the slime rancher slimes into loose groups, and i like to think that these guys go in the "bug-like" group with phosphor, honey, angler, flutter and batty slimes, hence their mandibles and six legs.

Tangle slime mouthparts are built mostly to ensnare and pull prey into their mouths whole, rather than to tear it into chunks. As a result, they do not tend to attack humans even though they are carnivores.
