So, spooky season means spooky show rewatching, and thoughts about said spooky shows.

I need someone to agree with me that The Vampire Diaries took their archetypes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Like, nobody can convince me that Stefan is not supposed to be Angel (when normal he’s the height of morality, but secretly has a darker side that gets out of control and dangerous). And that Damon is not supposed to be Spike (wild, does what he wants when he wants, but falls in love deep and hard because behind the murder and mayhem, he’s a romantic at his core).

I also love that someone looked at Angel and Spike and said “ah, torture and falling in love with the same girl, that’s sibling behavior” which I am HERE for.

Other thoughts on TVD:

- all the past doppelgängers of Elena and Stefan are doomed to fall in love and then die miserably, so really we should be thanking Damon for being a meddling girlfriend stealer since without him everybody else would literally die in season 2/3 (he was the problem in season 1)

- Stefan loved Elena, but I think he was more happy that Damon would fight him for her than he was upset about it. The whole series Stefan loved Damon, and for a good while he wanted to find humanity in Damon and ground him in that. Damon loving Elena proved that humanity to Stefan, which is why Stefan only really got upset when he lost Elena.

- Spike is still better than Damon, but I find Stefan a more fully fleshed out character than Angel (at least in the Buffy series) since in Buffy Angel was literally “I’m tortured and love you and have your back but I’m a vampire and I hate that and I used to be suu-ccchh a bad person but don’t look at other guys” and it felt like he was almost too tall dark and mysterious most of the time. Stefan at least we follow and hear the monologue and thoughts and hopes of.

- ALSO Angel/Stefan are the reason Spike/Damon even are vampires? And Angel/Stefan want their soul/humanity back because of how bad they are as a vampire and miss being human or good, but Spike/Damon get their soul/humanity back because they’re in love with a girl and want to be that for her (which, yeah, motivated by love, checks out).

- Spike/Damon start off as a spunky villain that make legit threats but bond with the main girl the most when trying to stop Angel/Stefan. Like, I can’t make this up and there’s so much overlap.

publicly, touya retired as the champion a few months before bw2 and since then moved to virbank to get into college and actually live his life the way he wants instead of carrying the burden of being the hero of unova

he has a good excuse to justify why the league doesn't just drag him out of retirement to kick team plasma ass, he did already sacrifice about two years of his life focusing on restoring peace to unova in the aftermath of the Old Team Plasma Incident and no one would begrudge him for wanting to take it easy after all that

in private though he's totally sneaking around to beat up members of team plasma and investigating them so that he can share what he knows with the unova league, the idea of him focusing on his studies and being kept out of the loop is a cover story so that people don't suspect that he's basically being a very short version of batman

as to why he goes through all the trouble of keeping his involvement in the neo plasma slayage under wraps, he knows from last time that ghetsis wants to use the legendary dragons to rule over the region and he has zekrom, so he's making extra sure that zekrom stays out of team plasma's reach

What is it with teachers thinking that you cheated in times you didn't cheat?

It's just my ultimate slayage, i guess. The downsides of being a genius /j i honestly don't know tho??? Like for english the explanation was "that it's suspicious that my analysis sounded like stuff that can be found online" but. Here, we're expected to learn from as many sources and as many analyses as possible for book reports bc they're very detailed exams. So, naturally, preparing for an exam about a book.... i studied from analyses available. Because i suck so hard at noticing symbols, and gatsby is full of them (i would not have figured out the eyes on the billboard = God's eyes on my own, for example, not unless i reread it three times and, when you have 17 subjects, you don't have the time for that)

And today it was just "well, your translation was very good, but the written portion was bad so" but that was like. I panicked. I misgendered myself twice. I didn't have time to proofread never mind catch and correct my errors😔

I wrote about 40 pages of my MA English thesis about sexy (queer) vamp lore, and I'm gonna sum up about 200 years of literary development really fast:

Vampires are and always have been a symbol of the Other. Dracula can be read as a queer or racialized Other, specifically, a "beast from the east" bent on destroying the Beautiful And Totally Not Evil Country Of England. He intends to steal the women with his powers of sexy conversation and biting. This conclusion is drawn from the things Jonathan fears most about Dracula, namely his ability to blend in, his extensive knowledge of Western culture, and his talents for "charming"/manipulating others.

Also, let's talk about the Victorian Travel Trope! In Barry McCrea's essay “Heterosexual Horror: Dracula, the Closet, and the Marriage-Plot” he states:

The novel opens with a physical movement from West to mysterious East, with a detailed account by Jonathan of his train and coach trips across Europe to Transylvania… The further east he goes, the stranger his surroundings and encounters become. As is standard narrative practice, the reader is a step ahead of the naive Jonathan; we know that all is not well; we know that things will get stranger before they get more familiar. Narrative convention trains us to expect the domestic world that opens the novel to fall away in importance as the occult disaster story takes over. Yet the narrative perspective will fail to follow this trajectory in Dracula… On the broadest structural level, as we move from England to Transylvania, the novel moves from adolescence to maturity, from struggling bachelorhood to married stability.

In many Victorian/gothic novels, the feminine protagonist moves from her place of residence to her future spouse's home (Jane Eyre, The Mysteries of Udolpho, Rebecca, In a Glass Darkly etc.). In Dracula, we see Jonathan acting out this role, “the novel begins with an engagement (between Jonathan and Mina) and moves to a cohabiting couple (Jonathan and Dracula)” (McCrea 259). In that way, their relationship is very queer-coded.

HOWEVER! Because Dracula never drinks from Jonathan (ie: never penetrates him to fully consummate their 'marriage'), Jonathan is allowed to return to England and Mina, restoring a heterosexual lens to the story and further vilifying vampirism.

Additionally, vampires are free from the standards of binary gender performance because “with both the male and the female of the species obtaining this phallic symbol [fangs], distinctions between the sexes are blurred… through being able to penetrate and be penetrated by either the male or females of the species, heteronormative binaries of sexuality are transgressed” (Stepniak, Anthony. “Actualising Abjection: Drusilla, the Whedonverse's Queen of Queerness.” Slayage: The Journal of Whedon Studies, 2017. Page 3). So for all intents and purposes, anyone who doesn't fit the heteronormative, cisgender, white expectations of the English upper-middle class is in vampire territory.

TLDR: Vampires are hot because they break every possible binary and also because queer, non-white, and non-English readers have been identifying with their social ostracization for hundreds of years.

BONUS FACT: Bram Stoker was Irish (there was some seriously rough internalized stuff going on regarding the anti-Irish sentiments shared by many of his English friends and literary contemporaries) and close friends with Oscar Wilde until Wilde's eventual arrest and imprisonment.

My favorite part of reading Dracula with tumblr was people loathing Dracula. I was prepared for everyone to be all swoony and reverent and “oh, he’s so awful, drain me, Daddy”

Pure vitriolic hatred. Loathing. The swooning was, as it should have been, firmly placed on Jonathan. Mina’s husband. Mina’s soulmate.

If you had told me that the prevailing sentiment on my dash at the end of the year would be “Fuck Dracula, all my homies hate Dracula” back in May, I would not have believed you.

i couldn’t stop reading i genuinely felt like i was going to puke from the tension/anticipation/suspense,, the dialogue was really good too and so was the like character study idk if i completely agree with this take on wills character but i really enjoyed in none the less and all in all it did deliver on the rom com of it all and had a very satisfying rom com esc ending that made me cry until it was actually solved because i really cant deal with lack of communication and unresolved tension anyway thats it this was really really good

this might be a bit above my reading level but i read emily dickinson for fun so im powering through just fine

umm i wasn't sure exactly how to tackle this because some of them are clear to me which fics they go to and some of them aren't, but i'm gonna try my hardest and we'll see how it goes 😌✨

1.) so the first one with the "this ripped my soul in half" - i'm gonna guess that's beneath these boughs? maybe? that's the one where i've gotten responses most similar to what you have written down

2.) those next two paragraphs i 100% know are from come to me again!! you can tell i definitely wasn't as focused on the logistics of their later kiss for that fic because i didn't think about the whole brushing teeth/chili thing AT ALL. i picked chili because i thought that would be an easy thing to scrounge up in an enclosed environment and to make easy substitutions for, and i just,,,,,did not think about whether people would brush their teeth in a coldtown or not alfjlas. ah well, it was mainly about them making out on the cross while Mike's flesh is burning and he's turning Will into a vampire, right? that was the main goal and the biggest scene i wanted to write, and i did!! so i consider it a success 😌

3.) okay this one i think might be what a match?? it's either what a match or cheer up baby, but i'm leaning more towards what a match because of the mention of tension

4.) this one is definitely to hell and back again - so i'm glad you liked it despite the tension heheheh. and honestly i would maybe have to agree with you on the thing about Will's character? i guess the big thing with that fic is 1. it turned into an entirely different beast while i was writing it from what i originally intended for it to be, and on top of that it ended up being the first book-length thing i ever wrote, so i was a little in over my head and not entirely sure how to handle it, and 2. i was so focused on whatever the hell had happened to Mike in vol 2 that i did really focus on him more than Will in that fic so i do think Will comes off as a little ahhhh flat? not entirely himself? idk, i'd like to think i've learned a bit more since that fic, and that i made up for Will's lack of character in it with my fantasy au a flower that resembles you, which was very much centered on Will and his complexities

5.) ok i genuinely can't figure the last one out lol. i would maybe say beneath these boughs? but that's what i guessed for the first one, so maybe the first one is a flower that resembles you and this one is beneath these boughs? not sure haha

I think there’s something deeply poetic about the human society’s fear of being eaten. Where monsters of all kinds that we’ve created boils down to this conquering of our bodies in much the way we do to animals, the planet, and to each other.

Vampires, monsters from old Russian folklore, have evolved from an ostracized person in a village that would take the life of those close to them after they withered away. Instead of the drunkard in the village, it’s Carmilla, young and attractive, seducing a young noble lady with her one hooked fang. It’s Dracula, whose act of consuming a person’s blood extends his own, who plans to distort and take all that he can.

Zombies, perhaps rooted in the intellectual monster of Frankenstein, don’t feast on blood but brains. Defiant of death in much the same manner as vampires, the contrast between the cunning vampire and instinct-driven zombie is a large one, yet it clearly points out this fear humans have of being pushed down the food chain.

It’s unclear why both these humanoid creatures must feast on humans in their conception, but it’s clear that they wouldn’t really be monsters if they didn’t.

WHEN  FAITH  LEANED  AGAINST  THE  PILLAR,  BUFFY  STRAIGHTENED  HER  POSTURE.  why  did  she  get  so  nervous?  was  it  about  making  a  new  friend?  she  couldn't  remember  the  last  time  she  had  such  an  easy  -  going  conversation  with  someone,  where  it  felt  like  it  flowed  naturally.  it  was  a  nice  feeling,  but  also  bewildering  for  the  slayer.  her  eyes  popped  open  wide  at  the  mention  of  feeling  unsafe  here  in  sunnydale.  maybe  she  shouldn't  have  led  this  conversation  with  such  a  strange  fact  about  this  town  because  now  she  was  going  to  have  to  explain  herself  out  of  this  one.  she  swallowed  thickly,        ❛      my  mom's  here   —   and  my  sister.  i  got  accepted  into  northwestern,  but  it's  too  far.  i  couldn't  leave  my  mom  behind       ❜     she  explained,  hoping  that  would  satisfy  faith's  curiosity.  she  chuckled  nervously,      ❛      i  think  if  i  didn't  know  how  to  use  pepper  spray,  i  would  feel  unsafe        ❜     she  joked,  playing  it  off.  she  began  looking  around  nervously  before  attempting  to  divert  the  conversation,  rubbing  her  arms  up  and  down  to  put  on  a  facade  that  she  was  cold  being  out  here.        ❛      hey,  i'm  feelin'  thirsty  and  what  better  way  to  take  care  of  that  with  a  not  -  so  -  legal  drink     ?      ❜    she  offered,  looking  back  inside  the  frat  house  then  back  at  faith  with  a  playful  smile,  hoping  she  was  playing  it  cool  and  not  too  obvious.

The fresh air was invigorating. Faith always felt more awake, more alive at night. The cool breeze hitting her warm skin, the gentle buzz from the alcohol putting the slayer at ease... This blonde's sweet demeanor just about did her in. But her curiosity, her suspicion, over that wooden stake kept her alert. Still, she laughed -- if Diana taught her anything, mirroring attitude was the way to get information from others.

"If the whole town is bad parts, I'm surprised people still live here," she casually added. Faith felt warmth in her cheeks as she looked at the girl's eyes, which were slightly hooded by her lashes. All the psychology knowledge in the world couldn't give her an edge if she couldn't control her own feelings. "I heard the school was fun. Beautiful location, not too far from the beach..."

She smiled. So it wasn't Bunny, but she was close. "Buffy. I'm Faith, and yeah -- I'm a psych major. Probably going to be dealing with lots of her weird. But I respect it. My wa- my uh, aunt teaches psychology back in Boston, so I guess I've just always had an interest in it."

Faith shrugged, kind of wishing she had that drink she'd finished off. She settled for crossing her arms over her chest and leaning casually against the pillar too, looking over at Buffy. This girl probably had stories -- the interesting, perhaps supernatural kind. Why else would she have that stake? "So what made you stay in Sunnydale for school? If it's so weird? Do you ever feel... unsafe?"

The rumors are true... I caught the coronavirus...

My first positive test result 😍 kind of iconic of me. It could be a false positive but I'm too lazy to care, plus we don't have enough tests for me to be re testing, plus I feel like shit anyways so it doesn't matter.

More unfortunately, my very fun and sexy weekend plans have all been thrown out. London's birthday dinner, Enkay's visit, Nausea.... all down the drain. Tragic. Dillon and Ariel have been very nice about it though. I hope I don't give it to them, although they should be fine because they had it relatively recently.

I think I may have caught it from my coworker. Speaking of, since I've last written an entry I have a slayful new job at Rule of Thirds in Greenpoint. Actually, jury is still out on the slayage level but it's definitely a step up from Bareburger. Fuck you Bareburger.
