2024 Top Ten Rock Albums - Myles Kennedy - The Art of Letting Go

NUMBER SIX - Myles Kennedy - The Art of Letting Go
One of the best male vocalists in the business, Myles Kennedy is back with his third solo album in six years following his 2018 debut (“Year of the Tiger”) and his 2021 sophomore effort (“The Ides of March”). This is the second appearance on my annual list as a soloist and his fourth appearance overall when including the bands for which he maintains frontman responsibilities (Alter Bridge and Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators).

Kennedy’s music style is a distinct blend of hard rock, metal, and blues. He’s a brilliant songwriter, talented guitarist, and incredible vocalist who flexes all his musical muscles in his best solo recording performance yet. The album leans heavily into a hard rock guitar sound with each track featuring a unique and melodious hook. But some of the best tracks are those centered in metal influences such as “Say What You Will” and “Dead To Rights”. The intro blues hook in “Saving Face” is brilliant, especially considering the heavy metal bomb that subsequently explodes in your face. The dude shreds.

Although the album has a high energy rock & roll vibe, “Behind the Veil” and “Eternal Lullaby” explore a softer tone and showcase Kennedy’s songwriting prowess. His soulful harmonies on “Eternal Lullaby” are second to none and drive hard right through the center of your heart. The heartfelt song showcases melancholy themes and promises of better tomorrows. It’s the best track on the album and a companion piece to the beautiful “Love Rain Down” heard on Kennedy’s 2021 album, “The Ides of March”.

For my AZ followers, we’re lucky to have one of Kennedy’s tour stops next year at Mesa’s Nile Theatre on February 14th. I couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate Arizona Statehood Day, Valentine’s Day, or both. See you there!!!
Best Rock Song: “Say What You Will”
Best Chill Song: “Eternal Lullaby”

好きなギタリストはSlash
- Slash / Slash(ソロワーク第弾) - It's Five O'Clock Somewhere / Slash’s Snakepit - Ain't Life Grand / Slash’s Snakepit - Contraband / Velvet Revolver - Libertad / Velvet Revolver - Apocalyptic Love / SMKC(※) - Orgy of the Damned / Slash(ソロワーク第二弾 カバーアルバム)
※ 当初はSlashのソロワーク第二弾として発表され、後にSMKC(Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators)の1stアルバムとして認識されることになりました。
実はiTunesでデータ購入していてCDを持っていないものがいくつかあり、ほとんどが廃盤になっている中、がんばって国内盤の帯付きを揃えることができました。うれし。

SMKCは5枚目のアルバムを現在製作中。

Ok, Slash has already said in interviews that his blues album is going to feature guest singers, like his 2010 solo album did. So before we hear anything about the official lineup, let me get my predictions out for the guest artists:
Demi Lovato was confirmed a guest singer after Slash appeared on a single they released last year.
Duff McKagan and Slash have been appearing on each other's solo projects for years, including Duff's 2023 album Lighthouse, so I'd say he's a top contender — though not as a singer of course.
My personal long-shot dream pick is Marc LaBelle of Dirty Honey. Slash called on Marc to sing on a cover of Mississippi Queen he did for a tribute album in 2022, and I think he'd be perfectly suited to a blues track. Slash had some lesser-known guests on his 2010 album, so I think there's definitely a chance.
Guest appearances tend to be a scratch-my-back-I'll-scratch-yours situation, so anyone Slash has worked with in the past few years is fair game:
Tom Morello (2020) — though known for his RATM sound, I wouldn't put it past him to branch into other genres
Black Pumas (2021) — honestly I know nothing about them
Michael Monroe (2022) — Hanoi Rocks frontman whom Slash has collaborated with before
Ian Hunter (2023) — former Mott The Hoople singer
Chris Jansen (2023) — country artist, maybe a likely guest?
The Dandy Warhols (2024) — reportedly they reached out to Slash, so not likely guests imo, especially given the late timing
Though this isn't an SMKC album, it's entirely possible that Slash's current bandmates could be involved in some capacity. Singer Myles Kennedy has dabbled in blues rock before, and Slash clearly works well with the Conspirators — though I also wouldn't be surprised if he put together an entirely new studio band with a blues sound in mind, the way he assembled SMKC to be a hard rock band.
And of course, there's a chance that any of his Guns N Roses bandmates could be involved...
#hopefully we'll find out this friday!#slash#saul hudson#gnr#guns n roses#current gnr#smkc#do i actually think that anyone from gnr besides duff is on the album? look. it's a LONG shot. but he was gonna ask anyone...#...it would have to be axl. he could definitely sing the blues. but axl hasn't been a guest vocalist on anything in ages

Saul Hudson (born July 23, 1965), known professionally as Slash, is a British-American musician who serves as the lead guitarist of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses, with whom he achieved worldwide success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Slash has received critical acclaim and is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Born in Hampstead, London, Slash moved to Los Angeles with his father when he was five years old. His parents were both active in the entertainment industry, and he was given the nickname "Slash" as a child by actor Seymour Cassel. In 1983 he joined the glam metal band Hollywood Rose, then in 1985 he joined Guns N' Roses (which was composed of former members of Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns), replacing founding member Tracii Guns.
In 1994, amid growing tensions within Guns N' Roses, Slash formed the supergroup Slash's Snakepit, and in 1996 he left Guns N' Roses. In 2002, he co-founded the supergroup Velvet Revolver with vocalist Scott Weiland, which re-established Slash as a mainstream performer in the mid to late 2000s. Slash has released five solo albums: Slash (2010), Apocalyptic Love (2012), World on Fire (2014), Living the Dream (2018) and 4 (2022). All but the first of these were billed to "Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators". He returned to Guns N' Roses in 2016.
Time magazine named him runner-up (to Jimi Hendrix) on their list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009, while Rolling Stone placed him at number 65 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" in 2011. Guitar World ranked his guitar solo in "November Rain" number 6 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos" in 2008, and Total Guitar placed his riff in "Sweet Child o' Mine" at number 1 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Riffs" in 2004. Gibson Guitar Corporation ranked Slash as number 34 on their "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time", while their readers landed him number 9 on Gibson's "Top 25 Guitarists of All Time". In 2012, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N' Roses' classic lineup.
