So when you ask the kind of lib or anarchist or whatever to get all twisted about brock turner (who is just a metonym for the broader phenomenon, the Unsympathetic Bro Criminal to have gotten off too lightly) why they are getting heated about an insufficiently punitive court ruling when they are self proclaimed bleeding heart prison abolitionists vel sim, they will tell you, Oh you see really i am angry at the disparity, how this guy enjoys these perks when so many less privileged convicts/defendants suffer so out of proportion to their supposed crimes. Im not a vengeance addicted sadist im just an angry egalitarian

But if thats really yr objection to the slaponthewrist, the inequality of treatment on display (which is indeed often real and atrocious), well there are basically two ways to remedy the inequality right? You can loosen the punishments on the disadvantaged to meet brock, or you can tighten those on brock (or more accurately, given that pesky double jeopardy clause, future brock-likes). Or ig you can do both in tandem so they meet at some happy medium. And if yr really the "abolitionist" you claim to be it should be the first one right? Brocks sentence is better bc it more closely approximates yr espoused goal of zero?

Now ofc in reality the second option is illusory. There is no policy lever or electoral strategy or series of intimidation campaigns finely tuned only to bring the hammer on "nepo yt dudebros" or what the fuck ever, the actual ill effects of any strategy pursued with this mindset will fall as ever most harshly on the poor and the brown and the sexually/genderly deviant and the mentally unwell. And if there were ways to only impose mandatory minimums or increased judicial punitiveness or whatever on stanford students or frat boys or cishetwhitemales that would anyway be disturbing and an abandonment of equality before the law even in name. But even setting all these impossibilities aside, its kinda fucking telling that THIS is the (in reality non existent) horn you are trying (abd failing) to take in the dilemma? That this is in fact basically the ONLY kind of collective response ever given by these woke recolourings of the nancy grace fandom?
