This was going to be your day. You just knew it. 

Sure, you accidentally hit snooze on your alarm for way longer than you should have, resulting in your shaking hands fumbling with the doorknob, using your chin to balance your large binder between it and your chest so you could twist said doorknob.

The shaking hands could also be down to the fact that you haven't had coffee yet today, but that's normal, right?

You walked backwards through the café doors, takeaway drinks in hand. The coffees lay in a cardboard tray, four tucked nicely in their slots, the fifth balancing precariously in the middle of them. The large binder filled with essential documents was nestled in your underarm, but as you walked, you could feel it slip. Luckily you weren't far from the building now, just one more street away. Your mind was far from the road, focusing on not dropping or spilling anything, and maybe you should have paid more attention, but this is a zebra crossing; I shouldn't have to.

Though, the white KIA that came hurtling towards you would probably disagree. 

Upon seeing your struggling figure, the car driver slammed on the brakes, the movement pushing his head forward, straining his neck. His head was down, and his eyes were closed, but he felt it. It didn't feel like much, but who was he to know what force kills helpless individuals on zebra crossings? He raised his head slowly and with much effort. He couldn't see you. He undid his seatbelt and pushed the car door open, standing out of it and rubbing slightly at his neck. Something was pooling at his feet.

Oh god, is that blood?

The substance led back to a small puddle surrounded by the deceased coffees and their now crushed cardboard holder.

Thank god.

Snapping out of his slight haze, the man registered your figure, thankfully moving, dusting yourself off as you stood with a small stumble, your hands flailing in an attempt at regaining balance. Your head snaps towards him, eyes fierce.

"You fu-" You began but abruptly stopped upon seeing him. He was slightly short but really, really buff. His face-

"Oh my god, are you okay?" he shrieked, eyes wide in panic as he almost ran towards you. 

"Me?" you chuckled cooly, scoffing slightly and trying to ignore the searing pain in your temple. "I'm perfectly fine, you?" As the words left your mouth, you felt yourself stumble again, the world becoming blurrier and darker. He watched as your limp body fell to the concrete below you with a thud. He tried to reach out, but the shock slowed his movements.

"Oh, fuck!"

Changbin had no issue removing your limp form from the scene of the crime, neither physically nor from bystanders, which is actually quite concerning in hindsight. 

Changbin wasn't actually sure what to do in this situation. If someone had told him before, he would probably have dismissed them because: that would never happen to me. He laid you carefully in the backseat of his car and there his jacket over your body in case the police happened to pull him over. He thought it would look slightly less suspicious that way. 

Changbin wasn't sure what to do, but he knew somebody who would. 

The drive to the dorm was probably one of the most stressful situations Changbin ever thinks he's been in. He was constantly trying to turn his head so he could see you. God, he doesn't know what he would have done had you woken up then. Thankfully the drive wasn't long, partially thanks to his legally-teetering speed.

Punching the numbers into the keypad at the main door of the building posed a surprising challenge when two of his arms supported your weight. Still, he managed and swiftly made his way through the building and to his dorm, hoping to avoid any of his neighbours.

Insecurity drabbles- an insecurity drabble includes an insecurity of yours and an idol/idols of choice. If your ask is like this "insecurity drabble, having stretch marks with Taeyong" I will write an already established relationship drabble where that idol helps w ur insecurity! requested by @kpopocadditions (i am so so sorry this has been sat in my inbox for months and i never got around to it! this is the fourth time I’ve written this and i’m not happy with the way it ended, sorry) requests are OPEN!!

this takes place at their debut unveil showcase - meaning Charlie and Seungmin are still dating but only the boys know

before the show -

“you’ve been pacing for 20 minutes, whats wrong?”

Charlie turned on her heel, coming face to face with Woojin, who had hold of her arm to halt her movement, she sighed, “it’s nothing oppa, don’t worry” 

he didn’t look all to convinced though, his hand slowly slid from her arm down and he gently grabbed Charlie’s hand, pulling her down onto the couch with him. Charlie didn’t try to stop him and only melted into his embrace. 

“okay, what’s actually wrong?” 

“Jacob said he’s be coming to the show but I’ve had no word from him, at all, i guess i’m just scared that he won’t actually turn up”

Woojin sighed and tightened his arms around her, resting his head on top of hers before speaking. “hey, trust me when i say this, he wouldn’t miss this for the world. He’ll be here, i promise you” 

Charlie looked up at him. “never make a promise, they’re only made to be broken”

“yeah? well this one isn’t going to get broken, your brother will be here” 

she closed her eyes and did a small nod, slowly becoming tired as the seconds ticked by and the noise around here started to drown out. 

a small push from Woojin shot her awake, her eyes widening as she sat up staight. “you can’t fall asleep now, we’re going on stage in 10 minutes” 

“fine” she pouted, wishing she could take a small nap to dream away her worries. 

Charlie energetically bounced around the stage, her mic swinging in her hand. She was attempting to distract herself and push all the worries to the back of her head and have a good time. 

spotting Chan a few paces in front of her, distracted by the crows, she picked up her speed and ran towards him skidding to a stop a colliding with him. 

“woah Charlie, you alright?” Chan asked as he steadied himself, she nodded and flashed him a big smile.

“yep, perfect, better than ever, fantastic!”

The older boy looked at her weirdly, raising his eyebrow in confusion. “are you sure you’re alright? you’re never like this?” 

“what? i’m always acting weird like this! guess being on stage just...makes me more weird?” the last part of her sentence sounded more like a question than a statement, Chan couldn’t stop himself from laughing at her sudden strange behavior. 

he reached up and ruffled her hair “alright love whatever you say” 

“better be off, other people to annoy over there” she pointed down the stage to where Felix and Jisung were then took off, leaving Chan stood there looking more confused than he’d been. 

on her way around the stage, Charlie had her focus on the crowd throwing waves and finger hearts accompanied by a bright smile that she’d forced onto her face. 

she eventually got round to the two boys, throwing her arms over their shoulders. “good morning boys, lovely weather we’re having today!!” 

“Charlie, you good?” Jisung asked, she nodded. 

Felix turned his head and looked down at her.”i don’t think you are, for one it’s nowhere near morning. And two, we’re inside a building...so the weather outside is probably unknown”

“...oh yeah...welp, guess i’m just trying to distract myself and that’s making me more strange” she shrugged, getting weird looks from the boys either side of her. 

the song eventually ended and they all gathered at the main part of the stage, Charlie stood between Woojin and Seungmin. 

after the show -

“well...i’m ready to sleep for the next eight billion years” 

Seungmin’s comment made the group laugh, most of them agreeing with them and expressing their own levels of tiredness, the show had drained them all. 

Charlie followed behind the rest, too lost in her own thoughts to contribute to the conversation. she was so distracted by her own thoughts that she didn’t notice Seungmin had slowed down and was walking beside her. 

“what are you thinking about?”

she jumped and looked up, meeting eyes with the boy beside her. “n-nothing, nothing important” she brushed it off.

Seungmin didn’t believe her, he grabbed her hand and gently intertwined their fingers, tugging on her hand. “hey, i can tell something’s bothering you, what’s up?”

“nothing, i’m fine, i promise” she emphasized the ‘promise’ in hopes he’d believe her. Seungmin sighed and leaned down, he gently kissed, his hand leaving her to pull her closer by her waist. as if on automatic, her arms wound around his neck as she kissed back, 

“and when were you going to tell me you had a boyfriend, sis?”  

Charlie pulled back in shock, her eyes widened. “i know that voice..” she muttered and turned her head to look down the corridor. 

Jacob, her twin brother, and Kia, he little sister, stood at the of the corridor, Jacob had a cheeky smile plastered onto his lips. 

“JACOB!!!” Charlie exclaimed, pure happiness laced in her voice as she pulled her arms back from around Seungmin and bolted down the corridor, jumping into her brother’s open arms once she was close enough. 

the tall boy let go of his little sister’s hand and wrapped his arms tightly around Charlie. a year of missing each other ended with one hug. they hadn’t seen each other since Jacob left JYP and moved back to Australia with his girlfriend. 

“i missed you so much, so bloody much! and look at you know, little miss idol” he whispered, letting go of Charlie and holding onto her arms. 

Kia tugged on the hem of Charlie’s shirt, a small pout on her lips. Charlie looked down and smiled brightly, bending down and picking up the small girl. Kia was 7 years old but she was still quite small, and despite only being young she had an alright grasp of korean - she was being encouraged to learn the language.

“Kia!! long time no see eh? missed me?” 

the little girl nodded frantically and wrapped her arms around Charlie’s neck. “i missed you so much!!! you did so so so good on stage!”

“aww thank you darling, did you enjoy the performances?”

Kia nodded even more, she seemed very hyper. “mhm! the dancing was really good, i wanna dance like you when i’m older!”

Charlie felt her heart clench, her little sister had to be one of the cutest people on planet earth. “but i don’t even dance that well! the other dance better than me, especially Felix but shh! don’t tell him i told you that”

“okay, you’re secret is safe with me!” Kia whispered and put one finger in front of her mouth. “speaking of the boys, I've missed them, shall we go pay them a visit?” jacob asked, looking down at Charlie. 

she nodded. “let’s go see the boys, Kia do you wanna meet them?” Charlie asked, the little girl nodded once more.

the three siblings walked down the corridor towards the dressing room and Charlie pushed the door open, the boys all turned to look at them. “i brought the idiot that you guys seemed to love” Charlie commented as Jacob walked in behind her. 

hyunjin jumped from his seat and walked over, pulling the tall boy into a friendly hug as charlie walked past him and dropped onto the couch beside Felix. she held her sister in her lap and leaned her head on Felix’s shoulder, closing her eyes. 

after a moment Charlie felt a small finger poking her cheek, she cracked one eyes open and looked at her sister. “what....what are you doing?” 

Kia giggled, prodding Charlie’s cheek once more. “making sure you don’t fall asleep!!” 

“i though your little sister would only speak English” Felix commented, charlie looked up at him and shook her head. “she’s been encouraged to learn her father’s first language” she informed him. 

Kia suddenly gasped. “you two have the same hair colour!”

Charlie looked up at Felix’s hair then down at her sister. “yeah, we do” 

they both had a similar shade of blonde hair, Felix’s a little darker than Charlie’s. 

“his hair is pretty” Kia mumbled, practically staring at Felix. he giggled and ruffled his hair, leaning down to let the little girl tangle her hands between his locks. 

Charlie’s attention was pulled from Felix when jeongin walked over and whispered to her “seungmin hyung said he wanted to talk to you” 

“thanks jeonginnie, where is he?” 

the younger boy pointed over to the corner of the room where Seungmin was sat on the floor against the wall, busying himself on his phone. with a small nod she looked back down at Kia. 

“i need to go to talk someone quickly, d’you wanna stay here with Felix?” Charlie asked, the little’s girls eyes sparkled as she nodded, almost immediately holding her arms out to him. 

chuckling, Felix picked up Kia and let the little girl rest her head on his chest. It puzzled Charlie how quickly her sister had warmed up to the Aussie. “look after her lix” she pointed before standing up and walking towards her boyfriend,

upon seeing footsteps approaching him, Seungmin looked up from his phone, a small smile grazing his lips when he saw Charlie. she pressed her back to the wall and slid down it, leaning her head against his shoulder when she hit the floor. 

“jeongin said you wanted to talk to me, what’s up?” she asked, wrapping her arms around him. 

Seungmin wrapped one arm over her shoulders, leaning down and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “nothing to be fair, i just wanted an excuse to get you over here” 

She giggled, lightly slapping his leg. “you’re ridiculous sometimes”

“oh hush, you love me” Seungmin retorted, his lips pulling up into a tiny smirk. 

across the other side room, Jacob sat in between Hyunjin and Chan, barely paying attention to what the two boys were conversing about, his full focus on his sister. 

the boy smiled, happy to see his sister being smiley and laughing around with another person. he pulled his attention of Charlie and to Chan, tapping the older boy’s arm to get his attention. 

“hyung, how long has Charlie been dating him?” he wondered, discreetly pointing at the couple. 

Chan’s eyes followed Jacob’s hand. “oh, not long actually, a few months maybe?” he answered. 

the younger nodded, leaning back in the chair, tearing his eyes of the couple. 

“so..when were you going to tell me you had a boyfriend, eh?” 

Charlie shifted against the wall she sat against, shoulder to shoulder with her twin, her eyes locked onto the floor. “soon? things were so hectic when we actually started dating i guess it slipped my mind” 

He chuckled, reaching over to grab Charlie’s hand. “as long as you’re happy with him, i’m happy.”

“haha, thanks J” she smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder. 

after a few moments of silence, charlie giggled and looked up at him. “how’s things with Sam?” 

at the mention of his girlfriend, Jacob cheeks burned red. He looked away from Charlie and hid his face. “w-why would you bring i-it up so randomly?” 

“oh come on, idiot! i told you everything about the boy I've been dating for not that long, update me on the girl you’ve been dating since you were 12!!” she whined, tugging on his hand. 

Sam, his girlfriend, was a close friend to Charlie since she was younger. Charlie was always curious about how they were getting on. 

“fine, stop acting like a baby! she’s fine, we’re fine, she got promoted in her job and hopefully soon we’ll be moving in with each other” 

Charlie broke into a smile, excitingly gasping. “really?! oh my god i’m so happy for you guys! watch, next thing you’re gonna be proposing to her!”

“oh shut up, that’s a tad far, i’m gonna wait at least another year” 

they both laughed, a voice coming from down the hall cutting them off. 

“there they are, go on!” 

looking down the corridor, the saw Kia waddling down it with her brightest smile, Chan stood a few paces behind her, leaned against the wall with a warm smile on his face. 

the little girl waddled over to them, giggling as she walked into Charlie’s open arms. She smiled as her little sister curled up into her arms, quietly yawning. 

“hey hey hey~ seems like you’ve warn yourself out, eh little one?” 

Kia nodded, resting her head on Charlie’s chest, her eyes fluttering closed. 

the three siblings sat in silence, in the slightly cold hallway, Charlie closed her eyes and leaned her head against Jacob’s shoulder, enjoying the moment she was having with her siblings, knowing this would be the last time she’d see them in person for a while. 

“you did good today, sis” Jacob broke the silence, praising his sister. Charlie smiled, cracking her eyes open to look at him. 

“really? i hope so” 

taking her hand in his, he ran his thumb over her knuckles, suppressing the small frown that attempted to see light when his thumb brushed over the small scars on her knuckles. 

he sighed and rested his head on top of hers. “you did amazingly today, you finally fulfilled your dream of being an idol and you absolutely killed it on stage! my little sister, finally making her dreams come true, on the road to the top. i can already tell Stray Kids are going to make it big, my little sister is going to make it big!” 

blinking back the tears, Charlie sat up. “i’m glad i have such a great brother like you but hold up- little sister?! we’re twins!!” 

“you were born an hour after me, i’m older” he sneered, smirking. 

charlie rolled her eyes, sitting up and holding Kia closer. “whatever, man, ‘m more mature than you’ll ever be” she joked, giving him a side eye. 

Jacob let go of her hand, wrapping his arm over her shoulder and pulling her closer to him. “not really but whatever helps you sleep at night” 

11:36 PM

the three stood outside of the apartment complex, in the biting cold. 

“do you guys really have to go?” Charlie whispered, staring down at her hands. 

Jacob smiled sadly, letting go of Kia’s hand and stepping over to Charlie and pulling her into a tight up. Charlie wrapped her arms around his torso as tight as she could, burying her head into the fabric of his winter jacket. 

“as much as i don’t wan’t to, as much as i would like to stay here, there’s too much stuff at home that can’t just be dropped. i’ve got work and Sam and some...other things. Kia has school and everything.” he rambled, slowly swaying side to side. 

Charlie sighed, screwing her eyes shut to keep the tears at bay for seemed like the millionth time that day. “i’ll miss you two, so bloody much” she whispered. 

Jacob pulled back and ruffled her hair. “i’ll miss you too Char, but don’t worry i’ll come and visit you soon! maybe i’ll bring Sam with me” he smiled. 

“okay, well, it’s getting really late and i think Kia needs to go to bed” Charlie pointed out, looking down at Kia. 

the little girl nodded tiredly, stretching her arms out to Jacob, a silent sign that she wanted to be picked up. Jacob smiled and picked her up, holding her tightly. 

“yeah it’s getting late we should head back to the hotel” he mumbled. 

Charlie pulled her hood up, stuffing her hands into her pockets. “when’s your flight back?”

“tomorrow, 6 AM”

she sighed, frowning. “okay...i’ll see if i can come and meet you, give you an actual goodbye” 

“come here, group hug” he held out his arm. 

Charlie laughed, rolling her eyes as she stepped forward and hugged him. “you’re an idiot Jacob, seriously” 

after a few minutes, Jacob gently kissed the crown of her head and pulled away. 

“alright, go on, get back to the hotel before you guys get sick! i can’t have that happening” 

Charlie watched as they turned around and walked down the road, smiling brightly when Kia raised her tiny hand and waved to Charlie, shouting down the road. 

“BYE BYE CHARLIE!!” 

she waved back, waiting until they’d disappeared from her sight before turning around and walking back into the apartment complex, her chest feeling heavy at the feeling of missing her siblings.

 "Calm down, Wonder Kid," Fury said. He didn't look amused like Vernon had hoped, which meant that whatever he'd come here to talk about was serious. Well, what else should he have expected from the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.? "It's not about that. Well—not entirely. It's about the good hands you mentioned."

Vernon narrowed his eyes. He'd met Fury a few times before, and never during favorable conditions. The last time he's seen the guy, Spider-Man had almost been pummeled to death by none other than the Goblin himself. "They said something about bringing him to S.H.I.E.L.D.," he muttered. "I should have guessed."

Fury didn't respond, instead reaching inside his jacket to bring out an envelope. He threw the open envelope onto the table in front of Vernon, making a few pictures half spill out from inside. "You know what that is?"

Vernon glanced at him suspiciously before slowly picking up the pictures and going through them. Each of them was a glossy shot of various locations in New York, and all of them had a major recurring theme—the places were completely trashed. Overturned cars, building walls with holes in them, bent lampposts. Wearily, he set the pictures down face-up on the table, then looked up at the man, who stared back with an unreadable expression on his face.

A beat passed. "Was that a rhetorical question?"

"Jesus, kid," Fury muttered. "All of those pictures were taken moments after a fight between you and one of your fanclub members. Now, I'm not saying I don't appreciate you taking care of a couple of minor criminals in the city—"

"Minor criminals?"

"—but I can't let you treat the place like it's your neighborhood playpen," he finished. Next to him, the pretty agent-slash-counselor sat with her legs folded, her surprisingly stern gaze fixed on Vernon. The attention made him squirm. "S.H.I.E.L.D. is a global defense organization, for god's sake. We don't have the time to clean up after kids who don't know even know their three Rs."

"Let me guess," Vernon said, "rock, roll, ramble?"

"Even your wisecracks aren't funny anymore, kid." Fury shook his head.

Ouch. "That hurt my feelings."

The man glared at him out of his one good eye. "You can't keep going like this forever," he said. "You're on your way to be one of the greats—don't look at me like that, hell if I'm gonna repeat that—but the big guys take care of their messes. They don't leave poor innocent civilians behind to get new paint jobs on their Kias. All that damage your careless fighting left behind, who's gonna take care of that?"

"Insurance?" Vernon suggested. Agent Fox cracked a smile, warming his insides. Her sitting aside in silence as Fury chewed him out was a little unnerving. He wondered if looking on silently while high-rankers lectured kids was something she had to do regularly. You gotta have a heart of ice to sit through that.

"You are," Fury said grimly, and Vernon blinked. "And you're gonna start today."

"What was it that you really wanted?" Vernon asked, crossing his arms over his chest, making his t-shirt stretch tight over his biceps. He really needed to go shopping. "You can't tell me the world's best spy came all the way to some backwater high school just to lecture a kid about cleanliness being next to godliness."

"You're a special case, Parker," Fury said, and Vernon placed a hand over his heart, mockingly going aw. "And you're right. I'm not here just to lecture you about your repeated careless mistakes, I'm here to help you fix them."

Vernon looked at him suspiciously, already wary of what was to come next. "And how do you propose I do that?"

"You've already shown me multiple times you can't do it yourself," Fury said. "Look, kid, here's the thing: you have a problem, and I have a problem. I also happen to have a joint solution to both."

Vernon slumped in his chair. Here it comes. "What problem could you possibly have? Nuclear warheads threatening to destroy civilians' Kias in Manhattan?"

"You really gotta work on those one-liners." Fury sighed. "There's a group of kids in the Helicarrier like you—up-and-coming superheroes in need of some real-world experience. They've got the training you need to handle jobs with efficiency, and you have the practical experience. They've got the goods—just like you—but nowhere real to practice them."

"You mean those guys," Vernon said, sitting up and recalling the three who had helped him in the fight against Rhino. "You mean—you want me to teach them?"

"I want you to work with them," Fury said. "Train with them, fight with them, lead what could be the next greatest team of post-humans."

"So basically, your solution is to sic a bunch of newbies on me as some kind of damage control," Vernon said angrily. "And what if I refuse?"

"Nothing," the spy answered simply. "You're not under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s official jurisdiction yet, so I can't do anything to you even if I want to—unless, of course, I absolutely have to. You're allowed to walk out of here right now, but I can't guarantee that that's gonna work out for you."

Vernon considered this. He knew a threat when he heard one, even when it wasn't a yell of SPIDER-MAN, I'M GONNA KILL YOU, but he also knew that Nick Fury's threats weren't always real threats. However, he did not like his chances.

"As long as they stay out of my business," he muttered, knowing that was the one thing they were least likely to do. He knew how closely teams operated, and it didn't take his spider sense to figure out that this team was going to be much nosier than that. He recalled the annoyed scowl on that Nova guy's face, and internally shuddered.

"It's a deal," Fury said pleasantly, as if Vernon had any choice but to accept the so-called 'deal'. "I'll be checking in regularly, so bear in mind that I'll know if you ever kill one of your teammates and throw their body into the East River."

"I would never go to that much trouble," he replied equally pleasantly, getting up. Then he glanced at the clock, and scowled. "I can't believe you made me skip my biology quiz for five minutes of parental guidance."

"Oh, I'd never lie to a teacher, kid," Fury said, patting his shoulder as he passed him. "A counseling session I promised, and a counseling session you will get."

Vernon glanced at the other agent in dismay, but she only smiled—whether in amusement or reassurance, he couldn't tell. She clicked her pen, picking up the pad, her eyes twinkling. "Settle down, Spider-Man," she said. "This will only take forty minutes."

Vernon almost considered opting out of eating in the cafeteria, but changed his mind at the last moment, knowing it was the only time other than first period biology he got to see Joshua on Mondays. He desperately needed to vent, and his bespectacled friend was the only one who even came close to understanding to the layers of his identity, one of which was a deep-rooted hatred for the universal authority on superheroes.

So he stalked right into lunch, barely noticing the gunk of whatever-it-was thwacking into his plastic tray, and headed for their usual table in the corner of the cafeteria. He didn't need to go that far to get to Joshua, however, as the blue-haired boy almost walked smack into him as he made his way there.

"Woah, woah, steady," Joshua said, grabbing his bicep to prevent them from colliding. "Why are you making like a steamroller towards that innocent little table? And what the hell were you during biology? What was that about?"

Vernon cast a careful glance around the cafeteria, at the crowd of people, one of which could easily overhear them in the close range. "I'll give you the details later," he murmured. "The cusp of the matter is: Fury blackmailed me into signing up for a team activity."

"Wait, wait, wait, Nick Fury?" Joshua asked in awe as they walked over to the table, gripping his tray tightly and hunching his shoulders, leaning slightly towards Vernon in interest. "You mean he was here, in this school?"

"Not even the first time, Josh."

"Not the—" Joshua shook his head, as if shooing away the thoughts. "Okay. Filing that information away for further perusal later. So you're telling me Nick Fury, super-spy, came to this place—" he spread his arms, indicating the school— "to talk to you. Man, sometimes I forget Spider-Man's supposed to be a household name."

"Shut up," Vernon hissed, casting a furtive glance at a heavily tattooed blonde who passed them by closely. "But yeah. And he asked me to team up with these noobs from the S.H.I.E.L.D. future program or something."

Joshua frowned. "But that's kind of cool, though, right?"

"Not if they're gonna slow me down," he replied. "Spider-Man's always operated alone, and—wait, what the hell?"

He stopped in his tracks right before the table, a stunned expression on his face. Joshua raised his eyebrows, following his gaze to the table, which was, surprisingly enough, already occupied.

She was there, of course, at her usual seat, the third from the left, except she was not alone. There was another girl, with dark hair and piercing eyes, picking at a soggy fry with her lips pursed. Next to her was a brooding blond with freckles that stood out against his shockingly pale skin. Last, but not the least, was the boy with the tanned skin who was making Vernon's best friend laugh so hard she was doubled over, a familiar cocky edge to his smile.

"Ah," Joshua said.

Lucy Langdon was one of Vernon's, and therefore Spider-Man's, biggest pressure points. She was also one of the only ones who had been left virtually untouched by all his superhero shenanigans, and he wanted to keep it that way. Though she was smart enough keep up with a few new trainees, as far as Vernon was concerned, she was strictly off-limits. Even to superheroes who could fly and called themselves Nova.

Vernon stalked over to the table and slammed his tray on the surface so hard he made everyone jump. Then he glared at the boy sitting next to her, the one with the bronzed skin, as Joshua stood by awkwardly. "You're in my seat," he said pointedly.

The boy cocked a lazy eyebrow, gesturing to the unoccupied seats opposite him. "I don't see your name on it."

Vernon ground his teeth, raising his hand (no doubt to petulantly slam it down on the table next to his tray) but Joshua grabbed his wrist, giving him a meaningful look. "Don't start anything that can be easily avoided," he muttered to the boy, and Vernon relented, albeit grudgingly.

"You're late," Lucy said conversationally, though your voice was higher than usual, probably because of the sudden tension that had descended upon the table. Vernon sat down slowly, still glaring at the boy, and she glanced at Joshua, who only shrugged. "These are, uhm, they're new."

"I figured," Vernon muttered.

"Three in one day? And this late into the year?" Joshua wondered aloud, raising his eyebrows. "Now I'm curious."

"Nothing worth your curiosity, I'm afraid," the new girl replied. Her eyes, when they swept over Vernon, were watchful and aware. "Just a coincidence. I was supposed to join earlier but there was a family emergency. As for these two, I can only guess." Her smile was small but sharp. "I'm Yeji."

"Felix," said the blond. He looked gloomy, but maybe it was just because of the unhealthy-looking pallor of his skin.

"And I'm Yangyang," the last boy said, with an impish grin that rubbed Vernon the wrong way. He already knew who these three were supposed to be—actually, everyone was supposed to know Felix, since Iceman was already a pretty famous member of the X-Men. Surely dyed hair couldn't be the only change needed to disguise that face? "Me and Felix are cousins, actually."

"Felix and I," Vernon mumbled under his breath, and Lucy gave him a look which he ignored. "Since when did you start taking people in for charity?"

She raised her eyebrows. "Be nice," she said. "They were in my Home Economics class, and if it hadn't been for Yeji here, I might have blown up the marble cake I was supposed to be making."

Joshua frowned. "How?"

"A story for another day." She smiled an unreadable smile, dark eyes sparkling. "Now—"

"No," Vernon said.

She glanced at him. "Excuse me?"

"No," he repeated. Then, as jerkily as he had sat down, he got up, and jabbed a finger at the new arrivals in turn, before pointing over his shoulder. "You three," he said venomously, "to the corridor. Now."

"Aw, man, I can't believe you're being so sensitive about this," Yangyang—Nova—complained loudly, though there was a shit-eating grin on his face as he followed Vernon into the hallway. "So Fury transferred us into your school without checking with you first. Big deal. What are you supposed to be, the queen of England?"

Vernon gave him a spiteful look, but otherwise ignored his remark. Instead, he focused on Yeji, who was watching him patiently, because she looked like the most sensible member of the group. He stared at her for a long moment, struggling to find the words that would convey the exact measure of his indignance. "Why?" he asked finally, giving up.

She shrugged helplessly. "Look, we didn't ask for this, either," she answered. "We're under orders, so it's not like we can just up and leave. Huddling in the hallway isn't a smart decision, either—we already have all eyes on us because of being the three new kids who randomly joined on the same day, and this is only making us look even more suspicious."

Vernon glared at her, trying to think of a good argument, then gave up. He turned on Felix, who was standing off to the side with folded arms, still looking uninterested in the conversation. "You," he said, narrowing his eyes, "you're Iceman."

Felix looked at him neutrally. "Yes."

"You're not under S.H.I.E.L.D.," Vernon said, pointing an accusatory finger. "And you have enough real-world experience, so there's no reason for you to be here instead of with the X-Men—"

"Dude," Felix said frostily; no pun intended. "Drop it."

Yeji nodded, giving Vernon a meaningful look he could not decipher.

"Aw, come on, web-head," Yangyang interjected. "We saved your life and you didn't even thank us, but I'll let that go since your manners aren't exactly polished. But this is just boring."

"It is not," Vernon seethed. "I'll talk to Fury—"

Yangyang snorted. "Good luck with that."

"—or the principal—"

"The new principal," Yeji muttered. "Agent Coulson."

Vernon made an exasperated noise. "The only reason I even agreed to Fury's stupid offer was because I thought it would get him off my case!" he yelled. "School is the only part of my life that's separate from all the wacky crap I have to deal with otherwise, and now even that—" He clenched his teeth. "If I'd known it meant having you people barge into my life like this—"

"Then you couldn't have done anything about it, even knowing," Yeji said, gently cutting him off. "Face it, hero. You're stuck with us as much as we're stuck with you—whether any of us like it or not."
