4 Year Shepiversary!!

Today, March 24th 2024, marks four years since I first made Shep!!

In that time, he really has evolved so much both as a character in his own right and as my main sona. It’s kind of ridiculous for me to look back at some of the first pieces I made of him and see how far both he and I have come since then <33

More ramblies abt what/how much he means to me below the cut :]

Shep was my first ever furry character and that was a big milestone for me, especially looking back on it now lol. I remember being nervous about taking that first step into having an anthro character because I had been in a lot of online spaces that had really negative views of the furry community (I would not wish being on iFunny upon anyone). Plus just branching away from WoF at the time, which my online presence had basically been built upon up to that point, also felt daunting.

But opening myself up to the furry community is something I’m so glad that I did and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Without taking that first step with making Shep, who knows, I might’ve never made things like Let’s Get Back! or gotten/made characters I so adore like PB, Starburst or Luau. I've met so many amazing people through this community and that's something I am so incredibly grateful for.

And then of course, Shep himself has really helped me in ways that no other OC of mine has. Given how I made him in March of 2020, that was right before the hardest stretch of my life so far, from early/mid 2020 through 2021. Having Shep as a way to express myself and channel the things I was feeling into a character really did help so much. I know I said this in my Shep post last year but it bears repeating, it really does feel like Shep and I have grown up together in the last four years. I don’t know how else to put it.

But 4 years and 232 toyhouse gallery images later, he’s still here with me. Despite everything, he's still me <33

I downloaded the ColorPop app over Christmas and just now finished my colors of Daisy and Carol!

I have large-ish chunks of time with very little to do semi-frequently at my new job, so I've gotten back into writing. I had just penned a line about my author insert character missing a warning indicator for something potentially about to go pear-shaped when I heard a clunking sound indicating the machine I work with just made an emergency stop. (Nothing looked out of place when my trainer checked, so a bug probably got in and tripped a sensor. Apparently that's happened before.)

Sometimes life imitating art is a good thing. Thank God it didn't this time.

DM: Oh?

Fathomless Warlock: I'm opening a shelter, soup kitchen, and free healer clinic to help the common people of the city. :)

Celestial Warlock: And this will be great as a warchest for my political campaign!

DM: ...Oh its not like you needed that money to complete the game or anything.

Fathomless Warlock: (ooc): What? This is what my character would do? This is clearly a serious societal problem for Waterdeep and it's really not safe for all these folks to be sleeping in the dungeons we're crawling through. I'm friends with a lawyer and a cleric and with help from our allies I sure we could swing this. And I just took my fifth of it, like we previously agreed? But look if it's plot important to have a lot of cash on hand, I can pay some of it back to the party pool from my own funds from what I inherited as a noble and just from the treasure we've accumulated on this adventure. You know I'm also still working for the paper and we've got the tavern and that should cover personal expenses...

DM: No no no it's not important.

[Beat]

DM: How much?

Celestial Warlock: And I'm not spending my fifth all at once. It's just sitting there until I use it. At first it's probably gonna be smaller expenditures like flyers and pins. And it's not like we have to pay for TV ads, just need to use my Book of Shadows to learn Skywrite...

DM: Oh, okay... So what will you all spend it on?

[Collective shrug]

Fathomless Warlock: I think you all should get yourselves a fine set of clothes so you don't have to rent a tux again. I already have one because like, you know...

Wizard: I'll be getting spell scrolls and inks to study my magics.

Fathomless Warlock: Cool!

Monk: I bought brass knuckles!

Paladin: Alright, then I'm buying plate mail.

Monk: They cost 10 silver. :)

Paladin: ...I'm still buying plate mail.

Celestial Warlock: That's cool! (Won't have to spend as many slots healing her.)

Paladin: Is that really all you're buying...?

Monk: [thinks for a moment] Steel toe boots? (Can I wear boots as a dragonborn?) ...A second silvered wakazashi in case I lose the first one?

DM: That's it?

Monk: I'm a monk. I don't really need material things. Though I figured I might buy some bamboo and knick knacks and things for our Tavern. If we need more money for the tavern (or the campaign) for the tavern I won a lot of prize money doing those mixed martial arts competitions that I don't really use or need.

DM: No no no that's okay...

[Beat]

DM: How much?

For my gf @taco-night-frenzy's birthday, I had one of her fantastic Detective Luigi's fanfics bookbinded! This is truly one of my most favorite stories with its blend of characters from Mario RPG, Paper Mario and more. I loved the idea of getting it in physical form, along with wonderful cover art for it by @frayed-symphony! The bookbinding itself was done by Cattle Abduction Bookbinding.

There's only one printed copy of this book, but the story is available to read on AO3! I highly recommend it if you want an amazing noir-style fanfic with Luigi as the main character. Check it out! ✨

Wanted to know your thoughts on this, but for what I've reading on John it really looks to me he really got worse post Paul and post Beatles, like his saddest songs match the moment he started to have issues with Paul, he wasn't really having much contact with anyone outside Yoko, he wasn't doing much music, he wasn't being that funny either, he even died without being able to fully overcome his heroine addiction (addiction that started in the Beatles fall out right?), and idk i believe his involvement in the whole peace/art movement looked more like an escape (like some people do with religion) than actual interest.

So what you think, was John at his worst after he got out the band and cut his relationship with Paul or was it was always like that?

thank you for this ask! I hope I'll make sense. I think the White Album was definitely the start of John's "sad songs". Happiness is a Warm Gun, Yer Blues. Subsequently, Dig a Pony sounded so desperate to me and Because which is yeah, post India, post breakup?

There's so many different accounts during that period. Some narrators might be unreliable because you never know who these "historians/journalist/"acquaintances" have their allegiance to.

During the 70s it was said that John was miserable, became a violent drunk (who believed in astrology). He was quite unhappy with how things turned out in his life due to his choices but he was too proud to admit it.

About drugs, Fred Seaman said John stopped with heroin in the last half of the 70s in this video.

Due to differing accounts that are out there, I just concentrate on John, what he wrote lyrically and how clearheaded he was during his last interview. He was trying to be better. I think that is the most important detail despite everything that went down. Also the part where he was going to work with Ringo and had booked a studio with Paul for January 1981.

His activism was partly a distraction for him. Beatle John dabbled in it, but he became very aggressive about politics after the break up. He was anti-religion when he released Imagine (1971). But went back to believing in god when he wrote "Grow Old With Me" (1979?), which I have so much thoughts about but I haven't even had the courage to voice out.

While there are glimpses of John's mental anxiety visible in his song "Help!" (1965)

"Help me if you can, I'm feeling down, and I do appreciate you being 'round",

he was trying to be positive about it as seen in "Strawberry Fields Forever" (1966):

"It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, It doesn't matter much to me".

And was still holding on during the conception of "Across the Universe" (in February 1968) with his mantra:

"Nothing's gonna change my world",

which I think might've been a result of Paul's engagement in December 1967 to Jane.

Across the Universe (February 1968) > believer God (1970) > anti-religion Imagine (1971) > anti-religion (he made a satire song which I did not include here) Grow Old With Me (1979) > believer

During his alleged break from music from 1975, he was still making home demos and was writing Skywriting by Word of Mouth.

I think John and Paul being apart was just not good for them. The general opinion was that Paul left John and had moved on. (I don't believe that's true). It was John who made the decision to leave, it was this push and pull thing, and Paul continued to reach out to him (and we don't know what happened during all those times they've met up). Some accounts say that John was practically begging for a reunion but then again Paul never stopped reaching out to John (see 1976) so I personally think, regardless of all these details that are out in the open, there is still a missing piece we have not considered yet and that can only be told by Paul himself.

To summarize it, John probably had depression (since his teenage years) but Paul was a constant positive thing in his life that he needed and that had helped him through it, "the girl who came to stay" until something happened...

John Lennon was definitely at his worst without his buddies by his side in the 70s.

Ram: love the album cover, really good flow, 3 Legs is underrated, incredibly fun album that's super fun to listen to in stereo. I really like Linda's vocals on it tbh.

Seaside Woman: cute! it's been stuck in my head a few times, actually. The melody really matches Linda's vocal style. She slays in the music video. It's fun to hear how much Paul is also having fun on the song. I like the little beeping at the beginning. Also, not what you ask but everyone should go listen to Linda's cover of Mister Sandman

Friend Of Dorothy: I think I'd only listened to this once before (this is the version I listened to just now). the little chatter with Yoko right at the start is 🥹. but also. wtf must have been going through Yoko's mind he sounds really good tbh and I like the piano accompaniment! (John got so good at piano towards the end :( ) Also "art deco decadent" is a great line.

Magical Mystery Tour: I really think all the music video portions of this movie hold up and show real cinematographic creativity. The way Paul points at Ringo at the start of I Am The Walrus. Their outfits are on point. The audacity of John wearing the dumbest fake moustache imaginable in that ticket buying scene. The wizard scenes are unironically charming.

Yoko Ono's musical career: this is hard because I just don't know all that much of it. I have advocated for many of her Double Fantasy songs before, which I find inspired and match her singing style super well. I also don't know if this counts but I find what she did with Milk And Honey deeply compelling. Also Season Of Glass is a harrowing album, and I highly recommend it.

Skywriting By Word Of Mouth: I haven't read the whole thing yet, but what I have has been at least entertaining if not very interesting! A lot of bits of the passages I've read sometimes just drift into my brain. I really like that bit where he did basically predictive text, like linking up words where two successive ones are common phrases but the entire thing is incoherent. I find John's wordplay really fun, generally, and his perception of phonetics fascinates me (linguistics is like a minor interest of mine)

The Family Way: think I only listened to this like once before. It's nice and I enjoy it. I like the changes in vibe throughout the main theme, and I like the more "pop"-esque percussion. I don't know the movie at all, but I'm picking up on some type of push and pull, possibly between present and past, which is cool!

Back To The Egg: excellent album cover, again. It's got a fair share of bangers. Again And Again And Again is my favourite Denny-penned Wings song and possibly my fave off the album. Arrow Through Me is soooooooo harmonically strange it's very cool. After The Ball is so sweet :(

Notes on Tags

I try to use what seems to me the most obvious terms for tags.

I retain hyphens but not diacritics in tags unless it's a proper name, e.g. #ubermensch, but #elizabeth peña

I tag fanart with a #title: tag wherever possible. This is not necessarily the title the artist has given the piece; it's just the set of words most likely to help ME find the piece, so please don't be upset if I have "mistitled" your art.
