Mezclar juguetes con videojuegos ha sido una tendencia habitual en los últimos años, con ejemplos por parte de Activision, Disney, Warner y la propia Nintendo. Llevamos ya dos años sin nuevas entregas de Skylanders, Disney Infinity y LEGO Dimensions, y lo cierto es que las figuras se amontonan en las tiendas, en muchos casos a precio de saldo, mientras que los amiibo se mantienen más por su valor estético que por tener ningún uso jugable, siendo en la mayoría de casos poco más que llaves para modos y niveles extra y galerías de arte. Con Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Ubisoft se mete de lleno en el mundo de los Toys to Life con algo de terreno ganado, ya que el público ya está bien acostumbrado a los juguetes que aparecen mágicamente en la pantalla… y quizás demasiado, por lo que queda poco del factor sorpresa. Así que, ¿qué tiene Starlink que no tuvieran los otros?

Para empezar, ofrece un uso diferente de los juguetes: ya no son figuras estáticas que dejar en un portal, sino que forman parte activa del juego. Tanto, que los acoplamos directamente al mando (Joy-Con Grip), en un accesorio un tanto aparatoso pero ligero, sobre el que se enganchan los pilotos, las naves y las armas que podemos cambiar en cualquier momento a lo largo del juego, con solo pulsar el botón de pausa. Con la nave, los dos pilotos y las dos armas que vienen incluidas en el Starter Pack podemos jugar la totalidad de la historia, pero si tenemos más armas, naves y pilotos tendremos una experiencia más completa y variada. Esto tiene sus “peros” y “matices”, que cubriremos antes de lo que, en nuestra opinión, marca la verdadera diferencia en Starlink: una jugabilidad muy cuidada, divertida y con una gran profundidad que lo acerca mucho más al RPG que al arcade de acción.

Luces y sombras tras la tecnología Starlink

Starlink está protagonizado por un variado y muy amplio reparto de personajes que forman parte de una expedición científica en el sistema planetario Atlas, pero que pronto se ve envuelto en una guerra por el control de los recursos que movilizará a los habitantes de todos estos planetas. Podemos jugar la aventura con cualquier piloto y nave que tengamos (en el Starter Pack para Nintendo Switch vienen incluidos dos: Mason Rana, el creador de la tecnología Starlink, y nuestro amigo Fox McCloud, invitado exclusivo para nuestra versión, además de la nave Arwing y la nave Zenith en formato digital). Esa tecnología Starlink es la excusa en el juego para lo que hacemos en el mundo real: modificar en cualquier momento nuestra nave para acoplar nuevas armas, cambiar entre pilotos o incluso colocar un par de alas adicionales para así obtener mayor potencia (a sacrificio del peso y velocidad, claro).

Puedes desmontar las alas de las naves para, por ejemplo, construir una gigantesca nave con tres pares de alas o pilotar solo el morro. Todos esos cambios se trasladan de forma realista al juego.

Todo lo que hagamos con nuestros juguetes en la vida real se refleja en el juego. Si tienes dos naves “físicas” puedes retirarles las alas a una y colocárselas a la otra para tener una bestia parda perfecta para el combate… o jugar solo con el fuselaje, el “morro” de la nave: no tendrás armas, pero irás a toda mecha. También puedes conseguir algo intermedio si en el lugar de las alas pones las armas. Puedes incluso colocar un arma del revés, podrás disparar a los enemigos que tengas en la cola. Y ojo, que no son cambios solo estéticos: afectan a las estadísticas de la nave, su energía, defensa, velocidad, peso, ataque. Cada pieza (fuselaje y armas) cuenta además con múltiples ranuras para colocar potenciadores (que se obtienen a lo largo del juego, de estos no hay juguetes) con distintos efectos, desde daños elementales, obtener más experiencia, mayor velocidad o mayor cadencia de disparo en las armas. Y ojo, que el piloto (la figurita que se coloca debajo del fuselaje) cuenta también con su propio árbol de habilidades, además de un movimiento especial único. En el caso de Fox, invoca a Falco, Slippy o Peppy al combate durante un breve tiempo muy épico en el que suena cañero el tema musical de la saga, pero los hay de muchos tipos: desde atacar con ráfagas en un microjuego de ritmo a camuflarse brevemente (este último increíblemente útil).

Starlink: Battle for Atla triunfa con su propuesta de interactividad entre el mundo real y digital de una forma mucho más inteligente que sus predecesores. Tener estos juguetes en la mano invita a desmontarlos, a probar distintas combinaciones, ver cómo estos cambios influyen en el juego. Y, honestamente, también a jugar con ellos, porque son juguetes estupendos, ligeros pero robustos, con un buen acabado y unos diseños muy chulos. Sin embargo, aquí va el giro: todo Starlink es completamente jugable sin los juguetes. De hecho, nosotros hemos tenido acceso a la versión digital Deluxe, que viene con todo el contenido digital desbloqueado: todas las naves, armas y pilotos a nuestra disposición. Sí que hemos jugado con los juguetes, y probado la experiencia más “pura” del juego, aunque a la larga realmente poco importaba: todas las modificaciones que hiciéramos en los juguetes se podían hacer cómodamente desde el menú de pausa, con una interfaz muy intuitiva. De hecho, todos los juguetes desbloquean una versión digital de siete días, con lo que podremos jugar si nos llevamos la Switch fuera, si queremos usar el Mando Clásico o si simplemente nos apetece jugar tumbados. De hecho, el Starter Pack de Switch, como viene con el Arwing en lugar de la Zenith, la nave que viene de serie en forma juguete en los otras consolas, incluye esta última en formato digital. De hecho, si entras a le eShop puedes comprar la versión digital tanto del juego como de todos los juguetes adicionales que se venden aparte.

El doblaje está tan cuidado, que incluso Fox McCloud y compañía cuentan con las mismas voces que en Star Fox Zero

Es una situación extraña, porque sin duda Ubisoft quiere que juguemos con los juguetes (y que los coleccionemos, claro), pero por otra parte, permiten que sea completamente accesible en formato digital, aunque al mismo precio que en su versión física, y vendiendo el resto de packs como DLCs (aunque a un precio menor que el de sus equivalentes en plástico). A esto hay que añadir un factor a tener en cuenta, y es que, si bien no es particularmente más caro que otros Toy to Life, al contrario que otros juegos de este género, donde pagas para tener más, aquí llega al punto de pagar para tener mejor. Los contenidos adicionales que pagamos, tanto si compramos los juguetes como si los compramos por la eShop, no son niveles extra o coloridos nuevos personajes, sino recursos. En este caso, naves, armas y pilotos con habilidades y poderes muy útiles para nuestra aventura. Todos los planetas y desafíos del juego están abiertos sin necesidad de gastos adicionales, no hay nada oculto o cerrado bajo llave; sin embargo, la experiencia será menos atractiva si nos limitamos a los contenidos del Starter Pack… hasta el punto de que las naves actúan como son “vidas extra”: si nos destruyen, podremos continuar la partida si colocamos otra nave. Si no tenemos más… de vuelta al punto de control. Es cierto que apenas hay penalización por morir (el estado de los enemigos o jefes se mantiene tal cual, simplemente reaparecemos un poco más lejos), pero no es un detalle muy bonito.

Lucha, explora, lidera, farmea

Llegados a este punto, cada uno decidirá si acepta o no la propuesta comercial de Starlink: Battle for Atlas. Como todos los juegos Toys to Life, no es un juego barato, y los contenidos adicionales suponen un gasto muy importante (nave + piloto + arma son unos 30 euros) si quieres tener un efecto jugable que merezca la pena. En realidad, dado que estas expansiones son armas, naves y personajes, es de los juegos de este estilo que menos se apoya en estas expansiones para expandir su contenido, hasta el punto de que es posible hacerlos completamente opcionales. Lo cual produce no pocas paradojas: los juguetes son opcionales y sin embargo, son de gran calidad y su interactividad con en el juego es muy original. Y que dé la opción de jugarlo entero en digital, si bien no cabe duda de que es algo positivo, reabre el debate sobre si este tipo de juegos esconde en sus expansiones unos DLCs exageradamente caros y restrictivos. No hay una respuesta clara para esto, depende de lo que cada uno valore como ético, y más allá de daros toda la información, la única luz que os podemos ofrecer es sobre el juego en sí es bueno o no.

Encontrarás estos modificadores a decenas durante la partida, y cada ver con mejores efectos.

La respuesta es afirmativa, rotundamente. Como ya expliqué unos párrafos atrás, podemos configurar nuestras naves y armas de muchas maneras, con efectos notables tanto en las estadísticas como en el manejo de las naves. Y no solo eso: hay decenas de potenciadores y habilidades con los que personalizar y mejorar casi cualquier aspecto jugable, y con las que pasarse horas probando para sacar el máximo partido a nuestras naves. Gran parte del atractivo reside en la variedad de armas: hay de ráfagas, misiles, de corto alcance, con poderes elementales de fuego y hielo o incluso gravitatorias, que elevarán a los enemigos por los aires o que crearán vórtices de energía. Probar distintas combinaciones y descubrir las más eficaces para cada tipo de enemigo es uno de los mayores placeres del juego, algo para lo que, claro, hay que pasar por caja. Pero incluso si nos limitamos al contenido del Starter Pack, tenemos ante nosotros decenas de menús de configuración.

Estos toques roleros favorecen enormemente un juego mucho más profundo y estratégico de lo que en apariencia podría parecer. Aunque pasemos la mayor parte del tiempo combatiendo, tanto con naves y acorazados espaciales como con monstruos y fortalezas terrestres, el juego no se limita a una sucesión de escenas de acción, sino que teje un mundo abierto muy dinámico lleno de cosas por hacer y sitios que descubrir. El juego nos va enseñando a través de su historia principal, salpicada de escenas cinemáticas dobladas al castellano, todo lo que podemos hacer en Atlas, antes de soltarnos a explorar, combatir y farmear a nuestro gusto. Resulta que la Legión, los malos, están invadiendo cada uno de los planetas, y nuestra misión, además de liarnos a tiros, es organizar la resistencia para prepararnos para la batalla final. Tenemos que construir bases (como refinerías que obtienen recursos o talleres para mejorar nuestras naves), mejorarlas (en muchos casos a través de misiones “no conflictivas” como búsqueda de recursos o escaneo de fauna) y destruir la presencia enemiga en sus diferentes formas invasoras. También hay misiones secundarias que exploran más en la personalidad de los personajes y, en la versión de Nintendo Switch, unas misiones adicionales protagonizadas por el equipo Star Fox tras la pista de Wolf.

En cualquier momento, un segundo jugador puede unirse a la partida, y sin necesidad de tener dos naves.

Llegar al final del juego es una tarea relativamente sencilla, pero conseguir el 100% en todos los planetas requiere muchísimas horas de juego. Y lo más probable es que quieras dedicárselas, porque la variedad de objetivos y tareas es muy amplia, explorar nuevas zonas del mapa siempre es satisfactorio, visualmente es muy atractivo y aunque los combates pueden hacerse repetitivos, siempre mantienen el interés gracias a las amplísimas opciones de personalización y unos controles en general intuitivos. La libertad de acción durante la mayor parte del juego es quizás lo más refrescante dentro del género de mundo abierto, y obliga al jugador a plantearse activamente sus estrategias: lanzarse a por los Titanes de los planetas del “borde exterior” sin mejorar bien las armas y sin mucha idea de cómo derrotarlos es casi un suicidio, así que mejor ir a por los Titanes más pequeños de los planetas iniciales y “farmear” un poco de experiencia y habilidad, y de paso, acumular mejores recursos para poder construir más bases que nos ayudarán en los planetas más peligrosos.

Conclusión

Que Starlink: Battle for Atlas sea un Toys to Life, con todo lo que eso conlleva, es algo desafortunado a la hora de dar una valoración. Si esto fuera un juego tradicional, con todas las armas, naves y personajes que pude disfrutar en la versión Deluxe desbloqueadas de serie, no podría recomendarlo más. La acción es rápida y directa, los controles de vuelo responden correctamente y la enorme variedad de opciones de personalización hace cada combate único. Y todo integrado en una aventura de mundo abierto con una historia y personajes entrañables pero que mayormente deja libertad al jugador para afrontarla como quiera, con una ingente cantidad de cosas por hacer para completar el juego. Además, es la puesta a punto de Fox y su Arwing en Nintendo Switch, y si bien sus misiones exclusivas no son gran cosa, queda como un detallazo que encantará a los fans.

Sin embargo, Starlink es más que eso. Es tal vuelta de tuerca al concepto de Toys to Life que se convierte en el juego que utiliza de forma más inteligente los juguetes físicos a la vez que es el único que es 100% jugable sin ellos. Es un dilema que no tiene respuesta clara, porque si para algunos puede que sea la cualidad más especial de Starlink (y ciertamente, los juguetes son muy bonitos y muy “jugables” como juguetes sin más), para otros puede ser un importante paso atrás por el tipo de contenido que bloquean tras unos precios muy elevados… que son aún más sangrantes si los vemos en su formato digital. En ese sentido, si lo compramos en la eShop, nos encontramos con un juego ya de salida extraordinariamente caro que vive, además, de una larga serie de DLCs a precios desorbitados al estilo no “Pay to Win”, sino paga para tener las cosas más fáciles y extender la diversión.

Por esas razones, nos preguntamos si no hubiera sido mejor plantearlo sin juguetes de por medio. El juego, desde luego, tiene valores de sobra, y se alzaría como lo que es debajo de toda la parafernalia, un verdadero RPG de acción, quizás algo más arcade y accesible a jugadores jóvenes, pero con muchísima profundidad y diversión. Lo que le hace aún más especial es lo que lo mete en un terreno farragoso que nos impide valorarlo de forma definitiva, y que dependerá de lo que cada esté dispuesto a asumir. Dicho esto, es probable que a los más jóvenes de la casa les encante tener jugar con naves desmontables que intercambiar con sus amigos, así que quizás debemos preguntarles a ellos y ellas primero.

Personalidade Crash é imprudente e um pouco pateta, mas heróico, no entanto. Ele parece ser desajeitado, mesmo como um mestre em suas habilidades de luta, sendo capaz de perder tempo com seu Sky-Chi se ele se envolver com o ioiô.

Biografia Um buraco de minhoca se abriu em Skylands e o grande Aku Aku aparece! Ele veio anunciar a Celebração da Sincronização, uma vez em duas décadas – uma época em que todos os mundos se alinham perfeitamente. Todos os habitantes da ilha de Wumpa estão dando uma festa e querem convidar os Skylanders. Mas com Kaos em uma missão para conquistar Skylands usando seu exército de Doomlanders, os Skylanders devem se concentrar em interromper seus planos malignos. Nunca para fugir do perigo, o lendário marsupial Crash Bandicoot salta pelo buraco de minhoca para se juntar aos Skylanders na derradeira batalha contra Kaos!

História Nas Ilhas Thumpin ‘Wumpa, Crash Bandicoot estava comemorando a Celebração da Sincronização com Aku Aku quando o mais recente esquema maligno do Dr. Neo Cortex deu errado. Enquanto isso, Spyro e Mags estavam a caminho da ilha de Wumpa, e o Dr. Neo Cortex elogiava sua mais recente invenção, a Cortex Matrix Chamber. No entanto, um de seus subordinados, Fake Crash, permitiu que sua curiosidade o pegasse quando ele sequestrou a máquina, enviando o cientista para o início da ilha principal. Embora relutem em confiar em Cortex, Crash, Aku Aku, Spyro, Mags e Skylanders se unem ao vilão para se livrar das Bad Vibes. No final do nível, Crash foi visto apontando os dedos apontadores para o Dr. Cortex (possivelmente sua maneira de elogiá-lo), mas recuou quando viu Cortex ficando com raiva.

Backstory: Meyhem was the youngest child born to the Horvitz family, as an attempt to rekindle her mother and father’s failing marriage. Despite the lackluster situation, Meyhem always seemed to have an energetic disposition, joining her siblings in wreaking ‘havoc’ from the moment she could walk. As Dyskord took up tinkering and Kaos secluded himself in the library, Meyhem would spend her days chasing Greebles around the backyard and engaging in sports at her school; her favorite being sheepball. After years of practice, she managed to join the competitive team at her school. It didn’t take long for her to become the head of the team. Meyhem had been at an early morning practice when Kaos blew up his school. And the rest, as we know, is history.

Pero el deseo de los fans se cumplió el año pasado con Spyro Reignited Trilogy, un remake completo de los tres primeros títulos de este carismático personaje. Tras un año de espera e incertidumbre, finalmente tenemos esta trilogía en Nintendo Switch, que además supone el gran estreno de estos títulos en una plataforma de Nintendo.

Un pequeño dragón con una gran misión por delante: enfrentarse a todos los malvados que amenazan la paz de su mundo. Las mecánicas son sencillas: podemos saltar, planear, escupir fuego y embestir. La clave se encuentra en los niveles y en cómo aprovechan al máximo cada una de estas posibilidades, desde plataformas arriesgadas hasta enemigos que son invulnerables ante ciertos ataques. Además, estos juegos se caracterizan por los secretos que esconden, lo que hace que invirtamos horas y horas en completarlos.

Todos ellos tienen la misma estructura, con varios mundos “centrales” donde se hallan portales para acceder a los niveles cerrados, además de algunos desafíos adicionales.

Es importante señalar que entre estos títulos hay diferencias obvias debido a la evolución que sufrió la serie (de la misma forma que ocurrió con la trilogía de Crash Bandicoot). El primer título se caracteriza por ser más sencillo en todos sus aspectos. Se centra más en la exploración y el plataformeo clásico, sin que te marquen unas pautas para progresar en la historia (salvo por el requisito para viajar al siguiente gran mundo). Además, posee menos personajes relevantes, lo que ha permitido a los desarrolladores dotar a cada uno de los dragones que liberas de un diseño y personalidad únicos, lo que hace que resulte más agradable rescatar a cada uno de ellos y más triste que las interacciones con ellos sean tan leves.

El triple de aventuras, el triple de diversión

Con Ripto’s Rage, vemos más cambios y novedades. Cada mundo que recorremos posee una identidad más marcada a través de las razas que las pueblan y las habilidades que se pueden utilizar en cada una. Además, las gemas poseen una función concreta, pues sirven para desbloquear algunas zonas bloqueadas o para adquirir nuevas habilidades como bucear o subir por escaleras, lo que da acceso a zonas inaccesibles en mundos previos y, con ello, aumenta la rejugabilidad. Por último, introduce misiones secundarias y minijuegos especiales como método para obtener el nuevo objeto coleccionable (orbes). De esta forma, se centra más en objetivos concretos, aunque no abandona el factor exploración, sino que lo redirige a esos objetivos. Por último, Year of the Dragon mantiene la identidad propia de cada mundo y sigue introduciendo novedades en forma de nuevos personajes jugables (como Sheila o el sargento Byrd) y minijuegos como la archiconocida pista de patinaje. Sin embargo, consigue aunar la exploración de la primera entrega y las misiones del segundo título, logrando un equilibrio en el que se recompensa la curiosidad del jugador para buscar secretos y su empeño en superar desafíos concretos.

Cada uno tiene sus puntos fuertes y débiles que hacen que destaquen con cierta particularidad. Pero esta trilogía tiene una razón de ser, al igual que ocurrió con Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy… tienden a ser cortos (comparándolos con los estándares de hoy en día). Cada entrega puede llevar una media de 5 horas para completar la historia, aunque la gracia de estos juegos era (y sigue siendo) completarlos al 100%, tarea que os llevará más tiempo. Conseguir todas y cada una de las gemas y objetos coleccionables no es nada fácil, y en algunas ocasiones la dificultad no juega a nuestro favor. Los niveles en sí mismos no son difíciles, pero desafíos como perseguir a ladrones de huevos o superar los niveles de vuelo ponen a prueba nuestras habilidades.

Pero la gran pregunta que nos hacemos todos es… ¿cómo rinde Spyro Reignited Trilogy en Nintendo Switch? Aquí me complace decir que la adaptación del recopilatorio a la híbrida de Nintendo ha sido sublime. Dejando a un lado el evidente bajón gráfico en comparación con las otras plataformas y algún que otro latigazo ocasional cuando hay mucho movimiento de cámara y muchos elementos en pantalla, el juego se mueve de forma fluida, mantiene los 30 FPS constantes, los gráficos son preciosos y conservan todo su colorido. Y los amantes de su banda sonora pueden reconocer muchas de las melodías que suenan en cada mundo, reinterpretadas de nuevo para este remake. Tanto si sois fans de Spyro que han esperado todo este tiempo al regreso de su héroe favorito, como nuevos jugadores que no conocen las andanzas de nuestro aguerrido protagonista, todos pueden disfrutar de Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Son juegos fáciles de entender, sin mecánicas demasiado complejas, pero están cargados de carisma y diversión que hace que se nos dibuje una sonrisa cada vez que chamuscamos a un enemigo. Los años no pasan en balde, y es posible que su propuesta parezca un poco descafeinada en plena época de Fortnite y The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Aun así, es la prueba viviente de que se puede hacer mucho con poco. El lavado de cara le ha sentado de fábula y se ha adaptado bien a Nintendo Switch. Así que solo podemos decir que, si lo estáis meditando, que alcéis el vuelo y le deis una oportunidad.

Duality - Chapter Nine (The Garden of Secretive Secrets)

“And stay out!!”

Kaos watched from the edge of his backyard as a band of Greebles scurried into the underbrush, yipping and chirping with their tails between their legs. He let out a sigh, wiping the sweat from his forehead off on the back of his hand, leaving a smudge of dirt in its wake. As the afternoon sun beat down on him, Kaos turned his back to the trees, returning to the task his father had so graciously bestowed upon him. Weeding duty; a chore that usually fell to him when his parents felt ‘eternity’ in the dungeons wasn’t fitting enough a punishment. It was usually saved for the yearly cleaning, but Kaos supposed this was a… special circumstance. And man, did the backyard need it. Kaos rolled his sleeves up as he walked, balancing across exposed roots and shallow streams that ran the color of mildew. Broken tiles protruded from the dirt in some sections, like a long forgotten pathway, or perhaps even a giant chess board. But now, the majority of it had become one with nature, with only remnants remaining. The very same nature Kaos had to push back, armed with an ‘arsenal’ that consisted of a pair of rusty pruning shears and his bare hands. A set of weapons that would make any creature quake in fear... as long as that creature was plant based and inanimate, of course. Kaos stumbled forward as his foot snagged on a tangle of brambles, the thorns slicing at his ankle. He hissed at the sudden sting, then pulled his ankle free, kneeling down in the crumbly soil with his shears at the ready. He waited for a moment, in case the brambles decided to leave on their own. When they didn’t budge, Kaos let out a huff, then began snipping away at the base of the tangle, squinting through the glaring sun and snippets of stem flinging haphazardly from the dull, rusted shears. He made quick work of the bush, or at least as quickly as he could manage, picking up the severed bundle of gnarled branches and carrying it over to the small piles he was accumulating.

Father had instructed him to organize the clippings; one pile of ‘salvageable’ material for Father and Mother’s out-of-work ‘hobby’, and another of junk. So of course, Kaos had made three. One for Father, one for the Greebles to scrounge through, and one for himself. Kaos dragged the bush back to the back wall of the house, using his free arm to shield his eyes, trying his best to ignore the definite sunburn he was going to get as he tossed the bramble into his father’s pile. The berries that grew on it could make a nice soda, though knowing his parents, they’d probably use the thorns or something. Kaos had always wanted to try the soda they made, despite the mixed reviews Dyskord had given it over the years. His favorite had been ‘radioactive suction eel’, though he had only given it a three out of ten before passing out on Kaos’ floor. Kaos had also seen flavors like ‘sand’ and ‘mud’ on the occasions he had snuck down into the cellar. Needless to say, the odd ingredients and off-putting side effects he had witnessed had dampened his curiosity towards actually sampling the carbonated concoctions. Maybe once he was a little older.

Kaos wiped the sweat from his brow, then looked up at the sound of the side door shutting, the squeak of its hinges followed by footsteps in the patchy dirt. Kaos craned his neck as his mother stepped into view, heading into the forest as she did practically every day. Some days it was early in the morning, others it was late afternoon, most likely heading to work. Kaos watched her walk briskly down the cobble path, the cloak she had wrapped around her shoulders flowing behind her, until she faded out of sight as the reaching branches of the trees swallowed her whole. Kaos shuddered, feeling a chill run up his spine as he turned away, needing to get back to work. Kaos grabbed his shears, beginning to pick and preen at the area around him. Pulling up leathery weeds and trimming back foul-smelling bushes that had been left to run rampant. As he worked, though, Kaos could feel his mind wandering back to last night and the mention of his mother’s ‘work’. Surely that’s what she was heading off to do. Kaos jammed his fingers under a particularly stubborn root, attempting to not so gently coax it from its earthy nest. He couldn’t help but glance over his shoulder from time to time, his eyes drawn back to the forest. He could no longer hear her footsteps, merely the slight breeze dancing through the autumn leaves, and the rustle of vermin in the underbrush. He shook his head, finally wrenching the root from the ground, the force sending him tumbling back; right into an unsuspecting Greeble. Kaos looked up as his vision spun, the Greeble leaning over him with a curious expression on its flat, flaxxish face. It ran its long tongue over one of its eyes before bounding onto Kaos’ face and then off towards the underbrush with a sharp tug. Kaos groaned, rubbing his forehead as he sat up, watching the pest scurry off on all fours, dragging something along behind it. Kaos paused as he watched the end of it get pulled into the bushes, feeling the breeze brush against the back of his neck…

In a panic, Kaos' hands flew to his neck, feeling around for any trace of his scarf. Instead he simply felt his skin, his eyes going wide. Quickly, Kaos glanced back over his shoulder to the kitchen window, checking to be sure his father wasn't watching, before breaking into a sprint after the Greeble.

Kaos lept over fallen logs and weaved his way around branches, his eyes quickly adjusting to the dappled light filtering through the canopy of off-colored leaves. Shadows twirled and twisted as he ran, the Greeble always just out of sight. A blur of yellow, the swish of a tail, a faint shrill chirping just loud enough to tell the general direction. The trees reached and grabbed at him, snagging his clothes and scratching his skin. All of his rationale had flown out the window, fear of those bark behemoths the least of his worries. Kaos could feel his lungs burning, every frantic step sending shockwaves up his legs; but he couldn’t stop. He couldn’t rest. He couldn't lose that Ancients-forsaken Greeble. Tearing around a corner and nearly falling flat on his face, Kaos watched the Greeble scurry up the trunk of a tree, ducking into a gnarled hole in its surface. The end of his scarf dangled out of the opening, swaying slightly in the breeze. Kaos paused, then practically buckled over, taking long, shuddering breaths as he tried to coax himself back into working condition. After letting the corners of his vision clear and the feeling of acid in his lungs settle down, Kaos turned his sights to the Greeble’s apparent home, glowering at it with enough force to melt through steel. (Or at least he hoped so, he had never actually been able to before). He stormed over to the tree, getting his foot caught on a root halfway there, before standing up on his tiptoes and peering inside the tree hollow.

Random trinkets and objects lined the sides, from rusted cogs, old jewelry, and even clumps of differently colored plants. In the center, the Greeble was curled up, though it opened one eye when it noticed Kaos peering inside. Kaos frowned, then reached inside, pulling his dirt covered scarf out from underneath the Greeble, brushing it off as he grumbled under his breath, before wrapping it loosely around his neck. Kaos turned on his heels, then looked back, locking eyes with the Greeble. It stared back, swishing its tail back and forth, large ears twitching. Kaos sighed, then grabbed his shears. With a deep breath, he lifted up the corner of his shirt and snipped off a lopsided square, shoving it in the hollow of the tree before starting the long walk back, muttering as many curse words as he could drum up on the spot. He trailed off after the first few though, feeling a chill run up his spine, a gust of wind nearly knocking him over. Kaos stumbled to the side, then froze, picking up on a sound carried by the wind. It sounded almost like a hum; a slow melodic thrum that seemed to resonate through him, making his skin prickle.

Holding his breath, Kaos turned towards the noise, walking towards it with slow, stilted steps, as if his movements weren’t his own. The song was getting louder, though the wind had died back down, the sound like a motherly hand carefully guiding him. Step after step growing faster, note after note washing over him, static blurring the corners of his vision until finally... the forest fell silent. Kaos came to an abrupt stop, letting out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.

He stood at the edge of a clearing, sunlight filtering down through a hole in the canopy, catching the dust that floated through the undisturbed air. A nearly perfect circle of nature encapsulated in a wall of trees, hidden from view, everything perfectly still. Kaos felt as if he was staring at a photograph. He reached his hand out, as if expecting to come in contact with a barrier, to prove it was nothing but a snapshot, but all he touched was air. He wiggled his fingers around a bit, then quickly stepped over the ring of small, mossy stones that surrounded the perimeter. He peered around, brushing himself off, before his attention was grabbed by something he hadn’t registered before. Offset to the center of the clearing was an old, stone structure. Grey tones of stone brick dappled with age and the muted greens of climbing vines, little flowers peeking their ways through the cracks. Kaos squinted, then crouched down, taking a tentative step forward. His shoes crunched against the fallen leaves as he walked closer, the only sound making its way through the silent air. Kaos tilted his head to the side, then carefully brushed some of the vines to the side, revealing old, worn-out markings etched into some of the bricks. At the sight, Kaos felt something tugging at the back of his mind, a familiarity he couldn’t quite shake. He got to his knees to get a closer look, the stone walls just a tad shorter than him. Gently, Kaos trailed his fingers over the edges of the closets engraving, the stone crumbling beneath his touch, tiny crumbs of stone falling to the ground, lost in the autumn grass. Kaos felt a tingle run up his arm, causing him to pull his hand away, his brow furrowing. He had seen these marks before, but he couldn’t quite place exactly where…

Kaos stood up quickly, peering over the side of the wall. He craned his neck to see, then raised an eyebrow when he noticed the wall dipped down, revealing a hole set in the center. His heart dropped slightly as he realized it wasn’t some ‘mystical structure’ like he had originally hoped; just some old, dried up well. Still, it was an interesting find to say the least. If only he had brought his journal; he could have added it to the map that he started last summer with his siblings. Kaos looked up to the sky, watching the red slowly starting to fade into a soft purple. How long had he been gone? Surely he’d have a sunburn after this. Just what he needed for the weekend he was forced to work outside. He always wondered how Dyskord and Mey were able to tan; whenever he was out in the sun for longer than a few minutes without the proper protection he turned as red as a Fire Elemental. Shaking his head, Kaos started back towards the way he had entered the clearing, hoping he could simply follow his tracks back home. That was, until a thought crossed his mind. Those marks had to mean something, right? Maybe the well wasn’t so ordinary after all? Maybe there was something at the bottom of it? Kaos turned back around, realizing garden duty could wait. This might be his only chance to figure out what this thing was here for. With a confident smile, Kaos pulled on one of the bricks, testing to see if it could hold his weight before pulling himself up onto the lip of the well, albeit with some difficulty. He sat on his knees, brushing the dust off of his clothes before peering inside.

Nothing but darkness stared back.

Kaos scratched his chin, squinting to try and make out how far down it went, before standing up. He took a moment to balance, then walked around the edge of the well, folding his hands behind his back. He looked down to the ground on one side, then into the gaping maw on the other, the stones shifting slightly beneath his feet, little flecks of sediment falling down into the dark. He stuck his tongue out, thinking, then knelt back down again. Throwing caution to the wind, Kaos stuck his hand down into the depths, feeling a chill run up it. It felt like he had plunged his arm into a bucket of ice water, the smell of dust wafting up. The air felt thicker, his motions lagging, up to his wrist now lost in darkness. Kaos wrenched his hand back, nearly tipping over onto the ground, before steadying himself on the ledge. Slowly, he lowered his hand back down, back up, then back down again, slowly testing where the temperature shifted. Kaos felt the stone shift beneath him, though he paid it no mind, just trying to reach further down, the chill nipping at his fingertips. How far down did this thing go? No matter how far he reached, Kaos couldn’t touch the bottom. It felt like it was just out of reach, despite it looking like it went on forever. Clenching his teeth and gripping onto the edge of the wall with his other hand, Kaos reached down further, straining his reach as far as it could go, until a noise made his blood run cold. A loud crack rang through the silent air as Kaos felt himself pitch forward, his head slamming against the side of the well as he tumbled down, his vision flashing white before going dark.

“Hello? Hello??”

Kaos opened his eyes to the light of the moon falling down upon him, a shadowy figure peering down at him, silhouetted against a familiar, starless night sky. Kaos groaned, rubbing his temple as he shifted into a sitting position, resting his back against the moss covered wall behind him. He looked up, slowly starting to make out features of the person above. Green skin, ragged clothes, large hands gripping the edge of the well as they peered down, large ears tilted downwards…

“Glumshanks?”

“Kaos?”

The two spoke at the same time, locking eyes. Kaos’ mouth hung open, brows raised as he tried to make sense of what he was seeing. Surely, his headache was making him see things.

“What- What’re you doing down there? How did you get here??” Glumshanks stumbled over his words, swinging a leg over the edge, then the other.

In horror, Kaos watched as the troll slipped off the edge without a care in the world, his bare feet touching down on the ground gently in front of him. Kaos blinked, confused, before slowly realizing the edge of the well was just above his line of sight, the fall nothing more than a few feet. The wall barely went past Glumshanks’ waist. With a concerned look on his face, the troll sat down, bringing his knees up to his chest. Kaos just stared at him, not sure what to say.

“So, uh, how are-”

“How was school?-”

The two spoke at the same time once again, then abruptly fell silent. Kaos snickered, then winced, holding his temple. Glumshanks reached forward, brushing Kaos’ hand away with a frown. Kaos looked down to the red that had coated his fingertips, glistening in the silvery light.

“You really got dinged up…”

‘Heh, this? This is just a normal afternoon for me.”

“...come on, I think my mom should have some disinfectant at the house.”

Glumshanks offered his hand. Kaos hesitated, then took it, the troll helping him to his feet and out of the old well. As Kaos touched down on patchy grass, he paused, his mind grinding to a stop. None of this looked familiar. The trees were sparse and looked like overgrown twigs someone had stuck into the ground haphazardly, dry grass and brown leaves littered about. Glumshanks glanced back over his shoulder, giving a slight tug on Kaos’ arm, which seemed to snap him out of it.

“Where… where are we?” Kaos asked as he followed along after Glumshanks, needing to walk quickly to keep up with his long strides.

Glumshanks raised an eyebrow, blowing a strand of ginger hair from his eyes. “The Outlands?”

“I know that, fool. Which island in the Outlands??”

Glumshanks paused for a moment, looking up to the sky. ‘...I’m not sure if it has a name that's in human...”

“Well, what’s it in Troll, then?”

Glumshanks hesitated, then made a few grunting and growling noises. He slowed his walking pace a bit, to give Kaos a chance to catch up. Kaos listened, meeting Glumshanks’ gaze as he fell silent.

“....so ‘Grumbletown’. Gotcha.”

“I don’t think that’s-”

Before Glumshanks could correct him, Kaos had gone up ahead, his short attention span now captured by something new. Glumshanks sighed, then followed after him. Kaos ran up to the edge of the island, keeping a wide berth from the miscellaneous trees scattered about, trying to spot any sign of his home. A familiar rock, a well placed plant, the remnants of a Chompy farm he cobbled together last summer; anything to give him a clue to where he was. Other than the familiar clouded sky, nothing seemed to ring a bell. It was then that Kaos spotted it - on a neighboring island was a bustling, rural village. He knelt down at the edge of the island, watching figures running along winding dirt paths that connected small wooden huts; the smoke from countless lit fires trailing up into the air in plumes, dancing along to the music that was being blasted through the streets. A heavy beat that made Kaos bob his head along, his mouth held agape. He looked over his shoulder as he heard Glumshanks’ footsteps approaching, a grin spreading across his face. Glumshanks just raised a brow, then sat down beside him, dangling his spindly legs over the edge. Kaos turned his attention back to the village, warm firelight flickering across the dead earth, long shadows cast from the houses, lit windows like wide eyes staring up at them.

“So this is where you live?”

“It is now, I guess.”

Kaos paused his bopping, looking over to Glumshanks in confusion. The troll’s expression was sallow, grey eyes looking down at the village. He swung his legs back and forth slightly, letting a sigh escape his mouth. It reminded Kaos of the first time they had met, the sadness in Glumshanks eyes, his slouched posture, all of it.

“What do you mean ‘now’?”

“We move around a lot.” Glumshanks started, finally looking back over to Kaos. “This is just the latest in a long line of towns we’ve… conquered. I suggested we at least barter for this one, but no one ever listens to me. It’s kinda like a celebration, every few years we find a new village and… sorry, I got sidetracked.”

“...at least the music’s pretty good?”

“I prefer classical...”

Kaos paused, then let out a laugh, his nose crinkling as he grinned. He bumped his hand against Glumshanks’ arm, coaxing a small chuckle from him. The two of them looked back down to the little hamlet below them, alive with laughing trolls and crackling fires, techno music blaring through the night air.

“...though seriously, Glumwad. Any chance you own a map?”
