Idk alot about eon's worm friend could you tell me about him?
Ohohohoho, absolutely! I will never turn down an opportunity to talk about Wiggleworth. Now, I’d like to apologize in advance— this might get a bit long.
Along with the Warrior Librarians and the Eternal Archives as a whole, Chief Curator Wiggleworth made his debut in Spyro Versus the Mega Monsters, the first entry in the Mask of Power series of chapter books. He’s introduced to the reader in the most normal, uneventful, not-at-all-overdramatic way possible: arriving at Eon’s Citadel completely unannounced on a massive, flying warship. Y’know. Average librarian stuff, I’m sure. Also, the warship is so massive that it effectively blocks out the beacon emitted by The Core of Light.
Understandably, everyone at the Citadel is freaking out. Even Master Eon is deeply concerned because, well, there’s a warship full of Mech-Piloting Murder Librarians hovering over his house. Not ideal!
The Warrior Librarians (who are all armed with laser swords, because why not) all descend from their ship and confront Eon who nevertheless greets them very formally. What follows is maybe one of the most adorable moments in any Skylanders book ever, in which Wiggleworth, upon recognizing Eon, reveals his itty-bitty worm self from within his mech:
“Greetings, Master Eon,” wheezed a tiny voice. “It is good to see you again.” Eon’s face broke into a dazzling smile. “I don’t believe it!” the Portal Master exclaimed, raising his hands in delight. “Chief Curator Wiggleworth, my old friend. How wonderful to see you.”
Yup! Surprise! Turns out the leader of the Mech-Piloting Murder Librarians is a very, very old and trusted friend of Eon’s! The two of ‘em go way back. Like. Many centuries back.
Wiggleworth is a bit like Eon in the sense that he too is an unfathomably old dude who leads a team of fighters and is burdened with immense responsibility. The Warrior Librarians are described as being the “archivists of forbidden knowledge” and the “curators of the arcane.” Their library and base of operations—the Eternal Archives—is home to every single book ever published “from every corner of the universe,” no matter how mundane, magical, or malicious. As such, Wiggleworth and the others take their job very seriously, hence the weaponized mech suits and ridiculously massive warships. (…But that’s also because he’s a bit prideful and self-important, too. His mech is the only one with a cape, which serves absolutely zero practical purpose. And despite each librarian having the same weapons, Wiggleworth’s weapons happen to be larger than everyone else’s. It’s so unnecessary, I love him.)
He shows up in almost every book in the Mask of Power series, but he doesn’t get much to do after his debut appearance. He basically stops being relevant by book 6, in which his one scene has him get (justifiably) scolded by Spyro in chapter 1. Why? Well, it’s revealed that one of Wiggleworth’s most trusted librarians was actually a double-agent gathering intel for Kaos (whoops!) who also (somehow??) succeeded in kidnapping Eon without anyone noticing (double whoops!!) After this catastrophic screwup, Wiggleworth is never heard from again.
…Until Skylanders: Trap Team for the 3DS! Not only does Wiggleworth act as your guide/tutorial guy/exposition machine, but the game’s main hub is the Eternal Archives itself! Since the events of the Mask of Power series were set before the events of SSA, Wiggleworth’s presence in STT 3DS confirms that he survived up to that point in the timeline while also suggesting that the Skylanders are all on good terms with him again (…maybe). Unfortunately though, Wiggleworth doesn’t really…do much outside of explaining game mechanics. He doesn’t even get to fight at all (he gets put under a sleeping spell while in the middle of a fight with a slightly-larger-than-normal exploding Chompy…off-screen). Furthermore, Wiggleworth and Eon don’t even acknowledge each other at any point in the game either! Needless to say, I feel robbed of an old man reunion.
While it saddens me that Wiggleworth ended up underutilized in both his book and game appearances, I’m glad he was added to the series at all (thank you, Mr. Beakman!) I find the concept of the Warrior Librarians both hilarious and compelling, and I absolutely adore the fact that Wiggleworth was introduced as one of Eon’s dearest friends. And hey! Although Wiggleworth didn’t make it into the game himself, his legacy lives on in SuperChargers, in which we meet the original founder of the Eternal Archives: Pomfrey! I think it’s so awesome that an idea originating from the books literally wormed its way into the games.
Chief Curator Wiggleworth, you’ll always be famous to me o7

informative version of my parody post
imaginators was noted multiple times to have ran out of time and money, which is why the character creator was so good but the rest kinda doesn't exist
ssa 3ds was made in six months a couple of times giants was mentioned to have been in progress for 11 months and began its cycle before ssa launched. skylanders games on average are made in two years (ssa taking three and a half) i-wei huang talked about adding one more paint chip would be one cent, but multiply that by how many figures are produced. he also mentioned that 3d printing began with giants (they had third party companies copy their figures for ssa) and every figure being hand painted i forget who it was that mentioned the teams rebuilding the previous game's skylanders with every new game. but say, for trap team, tfb had to import and rebuild all of the swap force skylanders, while making everything else ray west roughly said around when the first game's "scope" increased, it switched from being wii only to also being made for xbox and playstation. xpec had to re-engineer everything and some things were left out because they didn't notice them while playing on the wii version and the hog dog thing was meant to be a haha funny to break up the rest of the facts. anyway alex ness mentioned that he thought it'd be funny to have a dog speak with a really intelligent and refined voice (aka an rp accent) [x] highly recommend listening to the portal casters interviews and tealgamemaster's developer commentaries

Tags & Background
Before I get into tags, some important background info:
Skylanders was a "toys-to-life" video games series that was most popular between 2011-2016. While it popularized the toys to life genre, it was not the first franchise to technically do so, and other games/companies have outlived it, notably in Nintendo's Amiibo.
There are six main Skylanders titles, as follows:
* Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
* Skylanders: Giants
* Skylanders: Swap Force
* Skylanders: Trap Team
* Skylanders: SuperChargers
* Skylanders: Imaginators
They were each available on a plethora of consoles, though 3DS versions tended to have their own stories, and not every game was released on the same generation of consoles (though a Wii U is one's best bet to play each title - its backwards compatibility outmatches X1 and PS4).
Skylanders released amongst each title are identifiable by the color or style of their figurine's base (in most cases), which houses the chip that allows them to wirelessly communicate with the peripheral device (the "Portal of Power").
Green = Spyro's Adventure
Orange = Giants
Blue = Swap Force
Red = Trap Team
Engine = SuperChargers
Octagonal = Imaginators
So, this blog will generally tag posts like this:
#ssa = posts that are talking about Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.
#sg = posts that are talking about Skylanders Giants
#ssf = posts about Swap Force
#stt = posts about Trap Team
#ssc = posts about SuperChargers
#si = posts about Imaginators
Any resemblance to horrible acronyms is accidental, I'm stupid and may just not realize any of these resemble actual acronyms/phrases
Posts about a specific skylander or figurine will include a tag denoting their base (green, orange, engine, etc), their name, series, variant names, element, etc. Store variants (also sometimes called chase variants) will be tagged with #store variant, and random insert variants will be tagged with #insert variant
Posts about lore or characters will get tagged with those characters' names/games respectively.

not to get all sentimental about skylanders characters again or anything, but an aspect of the mask of power novels that i will never ever get over is how they gave eon a close friend who is as impossibly old as he is. yeah yeah their friendship’s hardly the focus of the novels and we don’t even get that many moments of the two characters interacting with each other, but the fact that this friendship exists at all within canon is so so so sweet to me.
like. it’s not really alluded to in the games, but in various books it’s repeatedly implied and shown to us that eon—being the last remaining heroic portal master in skylands—constantly overworks himself as leader of the skylanders and has been harboring a fear of failure for literal centuries. despite being surrounded by hugo and the skylanders whom he no doubt loves like family and who certainly share some of his lived experiences, they are still so young compared to him. they haven’t seen what he’s seen, they haven’t lived as long as he has, and after repeatedly outliving his previous skylander teams, he’s come to expect that he’ll outlive this team as well and that hurts.
but he has this one friend. he has this one friend who has also dedicated his life towards protecting skylands. he’s not a portal master and he’s not a skylander, but he’s a warrior. he doesn’t have any magical abilities, but he has a suit of armor. he spends his days within heavily fortified walls, guarding dangerous artifacts and preserving historical records from people who seek to steal and destroy them. he too is burdened with immense responsibility. he too fears failure. he too has been alive for so, so long. in fact, he’s still alive during the events of the games. just. there are these two time-worn souls who find solace in one another and whose days are made brighter upon knowing that the other person exists. i can’t get over that.
also eon’s friend is named wiggleworth and he looks like this and also this

Anybody remember,Skylanders? For those of you who aren't savvy, Skylanders was a relatively successful video game franchise based on Toys-To-Life technology. You'd have the game, a USB "Portal of Power" that you'd plug into your console of choice, and, of course, the titular Skylanders figurines, which communicated with the Portal using NFC technology that allowed you to play as the character depicted on the toy in the game.
Skylanders was a relatively brief but immense success. There were SIX games, each introducing some gimmick with a new generation of characters. The first game, Spyro's Adventure (yeah, this was originally supposed to be a continuation of the Spyro series, but that's another story for another time), introduced the basics: put the figures on the Portal, beat up bad guys, save the world, yada yada yada. The second game, Giants, had larger figures that were super strong in-game, able to clear obstacles normal figures couldn't. The third, Swap Force, had figures with interchangeable top and bottom halves. The fourth, Trap Team, let you play as Bosses using traps, and had special figures that dealt more damage to boss enemies. The fifth, and last one I played, was Super Chargers, which introduced vehicles. The sixth, and thus far final game in the series, Imaginators, allowed players to create their own Skylander characters using Creation Crystal figures.
The Skylanders franchise, however, was somewhat short lived, as Toys-to-Life technology, or at least games that were completely dependent upon it, proved to be little more than a passing fad. The major problem with Skylanders was, and I can tell you this as someone who bought probably over a hundred of those damn figures at one point and admittedly kinda enjoyed doing so, was that Skylanders was basically pay-to-win, microtransaction filled cash grab, not all that much different than something you could find on Google Play or the iOS appstore.
Let me use another popular line of NFC figures that's still around today to illustrate my point: Nintendo's Amiibo figurines. The thing about Amiibo, and probably a key reason that they're still around, is that, to a surprising degree, they're usable with multiple games. Not all Amiibo were bound to a specific game, several could be used for multiple games. Also, some games allowed Amiibo from outside their series. More importantly, most games that let you used Amiibo, even to the point of touting it as a flagship feature of the game, were not actually DEPENDENT upon the figures. With only two exceptions to my knowledge, Amiibo were entirely optional in their games. Smash Bros. For 3DS and Wii U had an entire mode of using Amiibo figures, but it was completely optional. You didn't a Mario Amiibo to play as Mario, you just needed to pick Mario from the fighter menu. Having a Mario Amiibo just allowed you to access a special mode that was kinda cool.
Skylanders, on the other hand, were bound to their series games and those games alone. If you wanted to play the games, you needed the figures. You needed a LOT of the figures. If you wanted to play Giants, you needed the Giant figures, not just the regular figures from the first game. If you wanted to play Swap Force, you needed to buy those two halved figures, you couldn't (and shouldn't) just cut your existing figures in half and make them swappable. And sometimes, new games had to have new Portals. The Spyro's Adventure Portal isn't usable with Swap Force because it lacks the NFC tech to read the swappable figures, and the Swap Force Portal isn't usable with Trap Team because it's missing a hole for the boss traps. You had to buy the regular figures, the specialized figures, the Traps, the vehicles, the Creation Crystals. And then, as if having to buy all those computer chip infused hunts of plastic in real life wasn't enough, Skylanders Superchargers and Imaginators had actual microtransactions available for boosters, character parts, in game currency, etc.
It got to be too much. Activision made Skylanders so consumer unfriendly it ultimately killed the franchise. So, before I bothered completing my collection for Superchargers (I was missing just ONE guy), I sold all my figures and games and never bothered with Skylanders again for a long time.
So, you might be wondering why I bring all this up. Well, apparently, there's a rumor that Activision is considering remastering the first three games of the Skylanders series.
BUUUT
They're doing so WITHOUT the need for figures, instead allowing you to pick your Skylander characters from within the game itself.
Now, bear in mind, again, this is all just a rumor. If they do it, it could go one of two ways:
1. Activision could just make it kinda like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, where you have all the "figures" and don't have to buy them.
2. It's another microtransaction packed shitshow, just minus the excessive amounts of space consuming plastic.
If it is the former, I will definitely pick it up for some Nostalgia in Skylands. If it's the latter, I'll avoid it and would heartily advise you do the same.
TL;DR: Skylanders was cool, I used to collect them, they got greedy, I stopped collecting them, and now I heard about a possible remaster without figures that I might actually buy.
