The Asian Drama Generational Trauma Challenge List

As @waitmyturtles has been making her way through her OGMMTVC I have been continuing to watch way too many dramas and thinking about the ones I want her to watch when she’s done with that project. And because I know Turtles, it’s always the dramas that feature themes around intergenerational trauma, filial piety, and lots of emotionally fraught interactions between parents and children that ping my “Turtles needs to watch this” radar. As I was mentioning the shows I wanted her to watch, Turtles joked that maybe I should make her a new challenge list that is focused on intergenerational trauma.

And if y’all haven’t learned this about me yet, you should know that I have no chill and absolutely will embark on a whole project because you make a stray comment in my direction. So here we are!

I wanted this list to be inclusive of a broad range of Asian dramas, exploring how it shows up in different Asian countries and through both het and queer lenses, so I consulted quite a few friends. Shoutout to @wen-kexing-apologist, @so-much-yet-to-learn, @bengiyo, @shortpplfedup, @ginnymoonbeam, and @emotionallychargedtowel for helping me refine this list. We landed on the following criteria:

Modern dramas only—not necessarily current but set in a time period recent enough that we don’t have a whole additional set of social mores to layer on top

The drama explores intergenerational trauma, not just intergenerational dynamics (so shows like Reply 1988 that are very much about family but not necessarily trauma are not on the list)

Intergenerational trauma is a primary focus and a major theme of the drama, not a background theme, a surprise reveal, or just part of a character’s backstory to engender sympathy (waves goodbye to most chaebol romcoms)

We are using the word trauma in a broad sense here–a lot of the complex trauma featured in these shows would not meet the formal DSM diagnostic criteria as a Traumatic Event

We did apply a quality filter–the execution of the story needs to be good enough that the intergenerational trauma themes stay intact, even if the drama overall is not a total slam dunk

Note also that this list is not chronological and there is no suggested watch order. I also do not recommend binging all of these dramas one after the other. Some of these shows are heavy and you’ll want to space them out. This is a challenge to complete over time!

I decided to share this on tumblr in case others are similarly weird and wanted to undertake this challenge with us. I'm sorry you're having a bad brain day!! :(( This might seem totally out of nowhere, but I've always wondered how Townhouse Time and Omega Sky would interact. Lets completely ignore how they would ever meet (unless that sounds like fun of course) but do you think a relationship could be had there? Romantically, sexually, both or neither? I could see Sky being interested in learning BDSM as a way to cope with what happened to him (which I've seen a few times in the community) but I could also see him being COMPLETELY turned off by the idea if he ever somehow found out Time did that sort of thing. Like walking in on him and Wars which, YIKES, Sky would likely immediately assume the worst there!

So this was an incredibly fun brain exercise! Because my knee jerk reaction is "omg absolutely never." But I wanted to give it a chance, so I dug in a bit.

So if o!Sky is introduced to the household, there are going to be a lot of omegaverse communication and cultural norms that will be plainly lacking. But Sky is still going to pick up on some things more easily than a normal outsider would.

First, the denizens of the townhouse all respond to Time with some level of deference and respect. For many, like Twilight and Hyrule, it's obvious. For others, like Legend or Wind, even if their interactions are more casual they still speak to Time with much more respect than they do their peers. So picking him out as the 'leader' type is a no-brainer.

Time's two main partners in the home, Wild and Warriors, really couldn't be more different. But Warriors is a frequent and vociferous bed partner who never shies away from Time one bit. And Wild, who clearly could never hurt a fly and bruises like a late summer peach, is as smitten as can be with him. Which lays out the second point: Time is a versatile lover who can not only treat Wild with the gentleness he needs but can tame Warriors as much as one can claim to tame him and keep him satisfied, too.

The catch here, though, is that Time doesn't go and seek out his partners. He's the one who is approached by others. And I just can't picture Sky approaching him for that sort of thing, even with his observations about the rest of the house. Nor could I EVER see o!Sky being comfortable with bondage of any sort. He might like to play "keep your hands to yourself" and lie with them behind his back or crossed above his head, but keeping his freedom of movement is important to Sky, especially in the act.

So, although my answer is to never say never, I struggle to come up with a catalyst that would see o!Sky and LMTCOY!Time sharing a bed with one another.

My list keeps growing by the week!

Update:

Bed Friend is finished, but I could, seriously watch a weekly soap with these two, forever!

Chains of Heart, too, is done—THANK GOD! I’m chagrined that I ever spent all this time watching a series that was so much about so little! Aside from being the love interest of Dim/Lue, Ken was a real nothing character, and completely unnecessary to the story! It was highly predictable, NO SURPRISES, here! If you didn’t figure out the entire story of Din/Lue from nearly the beginning, I’d be shocked. This series could have been 6 episodes, without Ken, with better fight choreography, tighter story, and, MAYBE, THEN, it might have been somewhat more interesting. But, that’s a lot of “maybe!” I’ve rarely wished a series was shorter, but, if it had been, I wouldn’t have had to waste so much more time hoping this series was going to get better.

Future has, apparently, ended, as well. They seemed to cut it short. It seemed incomplete. But, then, it wasn’t all that great, so why would I care?

And note on Venus in the Sky and Boyband—there hasn’t been an Ep. 2, yet, for either of them. IDK why.
