Day 20: Reunions
He shouldn’t be nervous, right?
It’s just a high school reunion. No biggie.
Sneak in, chat a few people up from ten years ago, and leave. Easy, no?
That’s what he’d told himself as he was getting ready. On the drive over here. As he was walking in.
But, you see, for one Dazai Osamu, it’s never that simple.
The second he sees him in the crowd, he knows it’s over.
Ten years spent trying to forget the redhead — the memories, the feelings, everything.
He can’t do this.
“Come on, Dazai, it’s only for one night. You don’t even have to talk to him,” Kunikida says, patting him on the shoulder with a small shove forward.
But Kunikida doesn’t know the truth, no one but Dazai does.
Despite all the time spent apart, when the memory of their last fight — their break up — played in his head every single day, Dazai Osamu never stopped loving Nakahara Chuuya.
They’re twenty-eight — a whole decade older, maturer, wiser. Ten years of new experiences, new partners, new lives separates them now.
And the mantra of ‘there’s no going back’ won’t stop repeating in his head.
They had closed that part of their lives. Closed the door and locked it tight before throwing the keys away where their adult selves couldn’t find them.
He shouldn’t be here.
The key is at his feet, a cursed red thread tying it to the one at Chuuya’s feet across the auditorium. They left those behind in this school, left /themselves/ here too.
An arm around his elbow, dragging him further into the crowd as Yosano pulls him, rambling about everyone they have to see – a certain redhead’s name evading her lips.
Kunikida has flocked to his other side, a guard for any unwanted attention. It’s no secret that Dazai made a few enemies in high school.
These two… they never left his side, despite the pain he’s caused them. The debt of two degrees, one in medicine and the other in psychology, an effort to keep him from offing himself by gaining legal access to prescriptions he needs. Medical bills covered by an accounting degree when Dazai was still wasting away in the unknowns of figuring out his life.
Then there’s Odasaku and Ranpo, both a year older, each understanding him in their own ways when he doesn’t understand himself and what he needs. A refuge in the form of a guest bedroom in the couple’s shared apartment that he’s been crashing in for the last three years.
He’s done his best to repay them: paying for Yosano’s therapy sessions, paying back for the hospital bills of his attempts, and paying rent for the room. And even still, they sweep it under the rug when he’s a little short with talks of ‘owing coffee or drinks’ and ‘covering groceries’ later on.
He doesn’t deserve them, any of them.
Kunikida taps his shoulder, motioning over to the slightly hunched form of Katai by the wall, and after a nod from Dazai, the blond leaves them. As he looks back towards Yosano, he catches eyes with someone he can’t remember the name of, but he can tell what they’re thinking by the squinted eyes and drawn eyebrows.
He should be more aware of his surroundings, more aware of the looks from people he’s gaining, just /who/ they are.
But he can’t. His eyes are immediately drawn back to the sight of red hair.
Chuuya hasn’t turned around yet – doesn’t know he’s there – but from here, he’s barely changed. Still the same short height, same stance of leaning on a hip, same style of dressing – formal with an air of rebellion that had Dazai falling for him from day one.
His hair’s a little longer now, wavier with age. A hat sits on his head now, the same one he used to get in trouble over for wearing it to school.
It’s nothing new to Dazai.
He’d avoided social media as much as he could, but nights of drunkenness had gotten the best of him and he’d spent them scrolling through friends’ pictures of the redhead and even Chuuya’s own account – a block that Dazai deserved never coming to fruition.
Dazai’s watched Chuuya grow into his life, seen every new partner he had (though they didn’t last long) and every promotion the redhead earned for himself. Known the anguish and heartbreak the man has gone through via his friends.
Even after the break-up, their mutual friends stayed with them. Neither had wanted there to be sides and their friends respected that.
And now ten years later, Dazai will respect that, too. He’ll watch as Kunikida and Yosano greet Chuuya, catch up with him since their last wine night. He’ll mind his business in the corner where people won’t disturb him.
Someone bumps into him, and it’s only then that he realizes he really should have been paying attention.
Yosano has dragged him closer, preparing to detach herself from him to chat, but from here, Dazai’s too close. It’ll look wrong if he doesn’t at least acknowledge the redhead and if he were to walk away now, Chuuya would only see his back and that’s not the impression Dazai wants to send.
Dazai’s too afraid to talk to him, but he at least wants the redhead to know that he doesn’t hate him.
He’s paralyzed, stuck between choices as Yosano taps the redhead’s shoulder, and he can only watch.
Watch as Chuuya twists around, watch as he recognizes Yosano, watch as blue eyes lock onto his.
Time hasn’t changed Dazai’s favorite color, nor has it dimmed Chuuya’s eyes. If anything, it’s enhanced them, shining azure that has Dazai breathing in a gasp.
And then those eyes are off of him, tuned back into whatever Yosano is saying.
He doesn’t know what to do.
Should he go now, find Kunikida and Katai to nurse the void in him? Should he stay here and wait for Yosano to be done so that she can drag him to another person?
Should he–
“Hey.”
Dazai can’t breathe. That angelic voice that always called him is still the same. He glances down slightly where the voice came from, disbelieving of his ears because there’s no way Chuuya would talk to him.
“Long time no see.” A hesitant wave as blue eyes meet his again, a small smile gracing the redhead’s face.
The brunet gulps, taken aback by the fact this is truly happening. He tries to wave, though it comes up short in the form of curved fingers too scared to risk sending Chuuya away. “Hey.”
It’s awkward, anyone around them can tell, and Dazai knows the whispers are flying. Chuuya looks at a loss for words as he shifts his weight to his other hip.
And Dazai can’t get over the fact that it’s been ten years. Ten years without this human being in his life even though he was always in Dazai’s thoughts.
Ten years.
Dazai doesn’t know how he survived.
Chuuya reaches up, scratching the back of his neck. “Nice glasses. They suit you.”
Oh, right. Dazai did start wearing glasses five years ago. Chuuya wouldn’t have known.
“I… saw you wearing them a few years ago off of Yosano’s post. Never got a chance to tell you…” Chuuya says, mumbling the end part. There’s a faint red tint on his cheeks.
Dazai should really say something. He wants to. But he’s stuck on the fact Chuuya noticed. /Years/ ago.
Something in his cold heart lights up again, just a little bit.
Hope.
“Well, it was good to see you. You look like you’re doing good, O- Dazai.” Chuuya smiles half-heartedly at him, taking Dazai’s silence as a note to leave.
Wait, no, that’s not what Dazai meant!
He goes to take a step forward, hand reaching out, just as someone behind him bumps – no, pushes him – sending him much further than he projected–
“Woah!”
–right into Chuuya.
The redhead catches him easily, instincts still as fast as ever, though Dazai has to grab onto him and dig his back foot into the ground to prevent them from toppling over, ending in a semi-dip that has some bystanders around them gasping.
Chuuya doesn’t seem to pay them any mind, immediately asking, “Are you okay?”
Their arms are still wrapped around each other, and it’s with a stuttered heart that Dazai realizes just how much he’s missed this.
“Dazai?”
The brunet goes to pull away, but Chuuya keeps his fingers wrapped around his biceps. “Are you good?”
Dazai watches as those azure eyes look behind him, widening at what they see.
“Yosano!”
Ah, of course she would turn on him. Dazai should have known to never trust a psychiatrist.
“Fuck, she ran off.” Chuuya’s hands still haven’t left him. The redhead glances back up, smiling again. “I was going to ask her to drinks after this but seeing as she’s nowhere to be found, how about you join me instead?”
Dazai can only gape. Nakahara Chuuya, love of Dazai Osamu’s life since age fifteen, was asking him back into his life.
The hope in his heart is overwhelming now, finally connecting his brain to his mouth.
He breathes out, “I’d love to.”
