“Skindigenous” is a documentary series regarding Indigenous tattooing traditions. Each episode showcases a different Indigenous community. We learn about each community’s history, culture, and roles that tattooing reflects around. Certain members are interviewed, and we learn a bit about their personal backgrounds and the significance of tattoos within their tradition. The series at large tries to promote respect, gratitude, and acceptance for tattoo practices that have been around since ancient times. Along with preserving these traditions, the show explains how communities try to make these practices relative to modern times as well. Through personal interviews and videography, we learn about the significance and prevalence of ancient tattoo practices in the indigenous community.[i]
Filmoption International, 2001. https://www.filmoptioninternational.com/skindigenous. Accessed July 14, 2023.
“Skindigenous” focuses on indigenous tattooing traditions from around the world. The cultural heritage is expressed and celebrated with each episode. In terms of racial and ethnic identities, each episode reflects on the cultural heritage and practices of each group and the cultural expression that is much connected to their ancestral roots. More than just a tattoo, the art represents a method of storytelling. Often, tattoos are seen as a rebellion towards society. The show challenges this misconception by revealing how tattoos are also intimately related to culture and ancient spiritual practice. This show relates to our multiculturalism class because the characters are given a platform to share personal stories as well as challenge misconceptions, especially revolving around indigenous communities. With each episode, the diversity of indigenous communities is revealed. Through tattooing, symbolic meanings can be communicated throughout time and with a wide audience.[ii]
“Skindigenous” delivers a conversation about race, ethnicity, and cultural diversity by showing different communities around the world and how they express their specific cultures through tattooing practices. The show allows us to see many different traditions and their specific contributions to our world and culture. There were also levels of cultural appropriation mentioned in the series and at times tried to communicate to viewers the importance of respecting authentic cultures. The show highlights different perspectives and tries to create a dialogue revolving around cross-cultural engagements and understanding. By sharing diverse experiences, conversations regarding identity and the human experience are stimulated. When living in a multicultural society, being able to at least understand and appreciate different cultures leads to acceptance and healthy diversity.[iii]

Photo #1: "Free Gaza" graffiti
This is a picture of the words "Free Gaza" spray-painted on the back of a street sign int he South End. The sign is located on regent Street at a major intersection heading northwest into town from Highway 69. It's a spot that sees a lot of traffic every day, from people heading into town for work in the morning on weekdays to people headed north to their camps on the weekends.
Graffiti itself is inherently an act of resistance because it involves an individual or group leaving their mark on a public space in an unsanctioned way, either to send a specific message or to simply assert their presence and occupy a space. This was shown in Magaña's Cartographies of Youth Resistance (2020) with his discussion of the Oaxacan street art collectives and the many example photographs, such as El Juarez Punk. There is obviously nothing quite on the same level as the Oaxacan street art collectives here in Sudbury, but we do have our fair share of graffiti artists who leave their tags all over the city.
One example that I would've loved to have shared has unfortunately been cleaned up, so there's nothing to take a picture of. In 2018, somebody climbed up the water tower and painted the word "skoden" (Indigenous slang for "let's go then") over the word Sudbury. The man arrested for it was a mixed Cape Verde Creole and Anishinaabe artist. I couldn't find whether he has made any comments about the reason or meaning behind the painting - so this is completely my own interpretation and it very well could be wrong - but I believe that intentionally covering the word Sudbury with an Indigenous slang word was probably a statement on the fact that we are living on, using, and profiting off of Indigenous land. The word "skoden" could have been chosen as a way of telling settlers and colonizers to leave the land. There are plenty of other tags I've seen around and couldn't get pictures of, but that one is probably the most meaningful to me.
To get back to the point of the post and the photo I took, I chose to highlight this "Free Gaza" tag not only because of graffiti being an intrinsically subversive act, but because of the message. The movement to free Palestine has existed for years, but has gained much more traction since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel and started the Israel-Hamas War, exacerbating the already tenuous Israel-Palestine conflict. The Free Palestine movement has been an incredibly prominent example of guerrilla urbanism in recent months. From graffiti to protests to encampments, people have been using urban space in unsanctioned ways to bring awareness to the conflict and give voice to the oppressed (ie. Palestinians) who cannot use their own voices. One incredibly relevant example is the Occupy UW movement, where pro-Palestine students created an encampment on the lawn of the Grad House to boycott against entities complicit in the Gaza genocide and encourage the university to divest its pro-Israel affiliates. I haven't been in Waterloo, so I couldn't get a picture of it, but encampments like this have popped up at universities around the world for guerrilla grassroots organizers to show their support for Palestine.

MCKNIGHT-Journal Summary
My Multi-media TUMBLR journal allowed me to look into Colombian culture with the movie Encanto and Native American culture, the website Amerinda and the documentary series Skindigenous on YouTube. As a design major I was most interested in learning about the ways that Native Americans are preserving their culture through various art forms. This included mediums like theater that I hadn’t previously considered when starting this course. I had a decent idea about the power dynamic between Native Americans and white Americans, but to be honest this class was more informative than most of my education in previous history classes. I was able to learn more about specific events such as The Wounded Knee massacre. The media I consumed for this blog was inspiring to me because all of it was about uplifting culture in the modern day. Learning about history but also focusing on what we can do in the here and now.

was there ever a description of how vallaslin are made?? cuz like, i always thought it was like, a cool magic ritual but then i saw a fic when it was just a simple tattoo?? how do you think it’s made?
To my knowledge, there’s never been details about the actual application, but there is definitely ink involved.
I think it’d be cool if different clans had different traditions in applying it. IDK if you’ve ever seen Skindigenous on APTN (it’s really good, you should totally check it out if you haven’t and can) but there’s so many amazing histories of real life tattooing practices out there, that I find it hard to believe that every single Dalish clan would do things the same way.

I analyze the documentary series "Skindigenous," which delves into Indigenous tattooing traditions from around the world. The show celebrates the cultural heritage and significance of tattoo practices, dismissing misconceptions and promoting respect for authentic cultures. By giving Indigenous communities a platform to share their stories, the series generates conversations about cross-cultural understanding, appreciation, and acceptance of diverse traditions and identities in a multicultural society.
"Remember the Titans” is a movie about unity and diversity in football. It centers on racial integration in a football team during the 1970s. The film showcases the significance of teamwork, unity, and leadership in overcoming racial prejudices and embracing diversity. It sparks conversations about race, ethnicity, and cultural diversity by reflecting on the challenges and triumphs of desegregation in America.
Nick Estes is a powerful voice for Indigenous rights. I discuss how historian and writer Nick Estes, a member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, is involved in multiculturalism through his activism for Indigenous rights. Estes challenges dominant cultural narratives that tend to exclude Indigenous voices, beliefs, and cultures. He highlights the importance of accurate and respectful depictions of Indigenous communities and sheds light on their ongoing struggles. He promotes cooperation between Indigenous folks and multicultural societies in addressing contemporary issues.
From these three blogs, I learned from strong voices and representations of communities in America that have experienced marginalization. Nick Estes uses his power as a historian and activist to allow more Indigenous voices to be heard. I was surprised to learn that a significantly sized community does not always have an equal say in politics regarding [especially] land rights. “Remember the Titans” is a microcosm of the desegregation era in America. How whites and blacks can find common ground when avoidance is eliminated from strategy of keeping the peace. “Skindigenous” sheds light onto Native tattoo practices through personal stories of indigenous individuals. A common misconception about tattoos is that they resemble rebellion or the breaking of social norms. The series tries to show how tattoos are a dedication to spiritual practices of Indigenous people and that their meaning is rooted into their culture, not a rebellious dismissal of modern culture.

MCKNIGHT - TUMBLR Blog #1 (Post)Television
One of the ways that culture can be maintained and preserved is through art. For this blog I watched the documentary series Skindigenous on YouTube to learn more about how Native American art practices are being preserved in America today. One of the main purposes of our course is to better understand how different American cultures represent themselves visually and how we can use this to better understand the history of different cultures in America. Skindigenous uses examples from many parts of the Americas but I will focus mainly on the United States examples because that is the main topic of this course.
The Documentary takes us first to Alaska where we learn about the gold mining culture and how people still make a living decades after the gold rush. Next, we visited Alberta, although not in the United States, this example still felt relevant to me and I wanted to include it. In Alberta, Portage College supports a contemporary and traditional art school that focuses on maintaining traditional art processes relevant to Native American Art. This was important to me because I think institutions like this are a key part in preserving culture. The documentary series even took us to Hawaii where it focused on the art of tattooing and how it’s being preserved through a passion for craft and a focus on legacy and the education of apprentice tattoo artists.
The Americanization of Native Americans was a central theme described in Ronald Takaki’s book ‘A Different Mirror’ At first American settlers wished to simply eradicate the native population, but eventually they decided that these people could be instead “civilized” and this is around the time the U.S Indian Bureau started the reservation system. Although eventually the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 would do more to protect tradition, it’s obvious that there was irreparable damage done to Native American peoples and their culture.
Skindigenous creates a dialog about cultural diversity by utilizing a documentary style of filmmaking. This paired with the fact that the series is available for free on YouTube makes it even more approachable. Although the series focuses on Native Americans, Skindigenous is more about the individual stories of people in different parts of the country. I think the segment in Seattle was the most powerful in showcasing how modern Native Americans are using their voices to encourage the protection of the environment.
