the way @mischieviem drew wings with harsh lighting and so many colours was incredible so i tried my hand at it for @destieldtiyschallenge. a different vibe than the original (which i can stare at for more than i already have), but i'm glad i challenged myself with the colouring!

kelly just won't sit still and wait for this pregnancy to be over. after the stunt she pulled in the bath, it's become pretty clear to dagon that if she wants to make sure kelly carries this baby to term, she's going to have to take more... extreme measures. she liked this body too -- it's a shame she'll have to let it rot for a couple weeks while she takes up residence inside the meat of one kelly kline.

Summary:

Dean's still getting used to the ache of loss and grief burning a hole into his chest. Still not used to the empty space where his brothers used to be.

His life is a day to day drudgery, the eternal crawl, and since Cas broke up with him, he's not quite sure what he's got left to stick around for.

When Jack and Claire go missing, well, he can't just sit back and watch.

Digging deeper, Dean finds himself caught in the middle of a complicated web he can't hope to begin to untangle. Missing Kids, Doomsday Cults, and the sudden return of Castiel in his life have Dean spiraling, even with his trusted Service Dog, Miracle, by his side.

But the one question remains, above all others-

Who were the Men of Letters, and what were they doing in Lawrence?

Dean doesn't think he's going to like the answer.

The first place he goes….

He doesn’t get much.

The house is simple, one story, whitewash. He waits on the stoop for a minute, listening for the sounds of shuffling footsteps before the door opens.

“Hi.” He grins, and the woman at the door doesn’t crack a smile back, barely holding back tears. Dean figures she must've wiped away the tracks before answering.

“Yes?”

“Do, uh, Max and Alicia Banes live here?”

Something in her eyes sparks to life, and she leans forward, “Have you seen them?”

“They’re not home?” 

She falls back into the door, the ember of life he’d seen snuffed out just as quick, “No. They’re not here.”

“Okay, uh,” he flounders, pulling out his card, “my name is Dean Winchester. I'm a friend of Jimmy Novak, who's…”

The woman shuts the door in his face, the sound of muffled sobbing echoing in the house.

Every house after that...they’re the same.

Quiet sorrow, hope, desolation.

He hits the mall, the school, clubs.

Nothing.

Last...and the one he wishes he didn’t have to try-

He shakes his head, forcing himself out of the car and up the driveway. Lisa’s car is in the front, but the front door unlocked. Dean lets himself and Miracle in, taking in the familiar entry. Lisa’s shoe stand. Ben’s sneakers tossed haphazardly on the floor. Family photos hung with pride along the hallway. Dean recognizes his face in some.

“Hello? Ben? Lisa?”

His voice echoes.

Nothing.

“Anybody home?”

A voice catches his ear, tinny and low, and he follows it into the den; but it’s just the TV. A pastor preaching to his mega-church, decked in white and arms thrown wide. Dean snorts, shutting off the program with the remote he remembers Miracle chewed on years ago-her puppy teeth leaving marks on the upper right corner.  The sudden silence drowns the room. No broody teenager playing video-games. The sounds of clattering bowls and dinner gone. 

Dean moves on.

Room to room. Kitchen, bathrooms. Bedroom’s; Lisa’s–then Ben’s. 

Nothing.

Standing over Ben’s desk, he scans the mess of papers and old take-out containers. There’s not a lot, but a single image catches his eyes, and he reaches out, fingers wrapping around thin, worn paper.

A booklet with The Men of Letters emblazoned across its title. 

The inside cover, Dean finds, has one words. Repeated over and over, till Ben’s handwriting goes sloppy. 

Tulpa. 

He blinks, staring down at the page before tucking the booklet in his pocket and moving on.

The backyard, on the other hand…

Miracle whines, tucking herself behind Dean at the smell, and Dean can’t blame her. Ben’s two Labradors lay limp in the grass; covered in blood, throats slit and drained into their own dog bowls. Their collars are gone; Dean can’t tell Colonel from Missy, and a sick, twisting feeling in his gut tells him exactly where the blood on the mirror came from. 

They’ve been dead a while, surrounded by flies and insects, and Dean beats a hasty retreat, knuckle white grip on Miracle’s collar as they escape.

Wherever Ben was… it wasn’t here.

15, 21, 23?

15. something you learned this year

i don't know if i can say i learned a new skill as such. but one thing is like... i really enjoyed making three card stud. and it really opened my eyes to like, how much of what i like about the practice of fanfiction is the meticulous remixing/reinterpretation of canon. there's a way in which the AMV is a more... analytical art form than the fanfic, because you are literally forced by the constraints of the medium to keep to the text. all you have are song lyrics and the kuleshov effect to convince your audience to take the new meaning you intend to convey from stuff already in the show. and i brought that ethos to three card stud even though i did add stuff. in a lot of ways three card stud was just me listing off things from canon i think a lot about and saying eh? eh? like. hoping the context would make it clear *why* this stuff makes me crazy. and i think that was a lot of the motivation behind the fic i'm currently working on, which is about dean and cas getting caught by the police. that fic at this point is mostly lists of things that have happened in spn episodes, placed in a new context by baffled feds and cops. which is the fun part. so like basically i learned that this is really fun, listing off canon facts in a new context

21. most memorable comment/review

so the most memorable traditional comment as such i got was probably this one, on i fold in half so easily (ifihse tends to generate the best comments because it's extremely dark without the ways in which it is dark being obviously flagged. so people are more shocked and more forced to think). "Cas: no officer i am very happy please dont tell dean im emotionally complex" is so funny and true that's literally what happens in that fic.

another top contender is this one, on getting serious, which generates good comments for the same reason ifihse does, though it's a lot less intense.

but in terms of my favorite *response to my work,* it was the breastfeeding anon saga (in chronological order here) which was a response to my fic smorgasbord.

and then i wrote a fic based on those anons, and then i got these very funny tags on my fic post:

23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t

when i tell you about the 120k deanvictor fic which is literally 90k of victor henriksen hunting down a serial killer dean winchester while becoming a little (sexually) obsessed with him and then 30k of victor knowing about the supernatural and moonlighting as a hunter while he and dean suck each others dicks so much.

and also it's about victor's relationship with his two ex wives and his former stepdaughter who he is still emotionally a parent to even though they have no legal relationship and the coworker he had an emotional affair with who he doesn't speak to anymore and how he feels trapped in his life and his job and dean represents this escape for him this total freedom. just living in his car on the road and not having to worry about what your boss thinks or needing to quit smoking. while for dean victor represents this stability and adulthood dean can never achieve. and dean leaves three spare pairs of underwear in victor's divorcé bachelor pad as a kind of little... fantasy. of what life could be like.

anyway the most compelling scene from that, IN MY MIND, is a scene where victor STILL thinks dean is a serial killer. and now he has him in custody. and against his will he's... charmed. by dean. because dean is charming and pathetic, shaking and sweating from mild alcohol withdrawal but still cracking jokes and being friendly and observant and extremely young-feeling, for 28. and earnest in a way he didn't expect. and they're forced to work together against a demon siege, a spin on jus in bello where victor still doesn't find out about the supernatural he's just protecting himself and a prisoner from a threat. and he has the uncomfortable realization that he's attracted to dean winchester (serial killer) (guy he is trying to take down) (has killed so so many people). and he's like well. we can table that for later. and then dean escapes.

so i've been trying to figure out a way to scoop out just that scene and turn it into its own fic because that's actually manageable for me.

the dean and cas pursued by the cops idea also comes a bit from frustration that i can't write this, though the feds in that one are ocs bc it's later.

Saying “Yes” when the cute bakery owner asks him out on a date—for no apparent reason other than that Castiel is there—isn’t reliable or responsible. It’s impulsive.

Letting the cute bakery owner seduce Castiel in the back seat of his ’67Chevy Impala is definitely impulsive.

Preview: The next morning, Castiel’s still so dazed that he almost misses Amy’s cheerful greeting of “Hi, Mr. Novak!” from the firm’s lobby reception desk. In fact, he almost forgets to greet her, and only the awareness that he should, that there’s something that he’s missed in his routine, jars his attention from the memory of Dean’s warmth, the way he guided Castiel back to his car with a hand on the small of Castiel’s back.

“Gathering nixies?” Amy asks when he pauses in his stride across the lobby, and he realizes from the bemusement in her expression that she must have called his name more than once.

“Don’t even joke about that,” Castiel warns. “You know that—”

“I know, I know,” she giggles. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help it! The fact that one of your clients cursed his wife with nixies and then tried to claim that the cost of paying the summoner should be included as part of their settlement…”

Yes, there’s a reason why Castiel so rarely handles divorce cases anymore. “Don’t remind me,” he sighs. “How's Jacob?"

One of Amy’s three tails swishes proudly behind her, her smile back at him wide and showing only a hint of canine, even with as broad as her grin is. Amy’s very good at keeping the sharpness of her teeth softened behind her lips. "He's good! Hardly ever gets stuck in his little fox form anymore. Not like that day in court when you were representing us, huh?" she laughs.

The resilience of parents never fails to amaze him. Because frankly, on that day, Castiel was so stressed that he almost wished he had the ability to escape into another form while under stress.

Well, no, that’s not true at all. If Castiel had been born hengeyoukai, like Amy and Jacob Pond, he wouldn’t be himself, and if he’d been infected by lycovirus, he couldn’t be a lawyer.

(When he does occasionally misplace his tongue, he certainly has no excuse as cute as ‘I can’t talk because I just involuntarily turned into a small, nonverbal fox.’ He can just imagine what Judge Monroe would have to say about that.)

9. Who is my favourite author?

My all time fave is probably?? Toni Morrison because the fluidity in her style stuns me and she has such a wealth of knowledge in regards to how people are... Her studies of human behaviour are second to none imo. And I love the things she writes about! Very cliche but Beloved genuinely changed how I thought you could write about history. Just a great writer.

27. Has a book ever scared you?

I feel like I don't read enough straight up horror tbh: what I can think of is this novella by Stephen King called Apt Pupil, about a kid who realised that the old man in the neighbourhood was a nazi. I genuinely abandoned the novella collection I read it in after finishing that story agajsjsjdjf I think supernatural horror doesn't really scare me per se but Stephen King is great at evoking the fear of putting kids into dangerous situations.

The story is super fucked up and comes with a lot of trigger warnings if anyone seeing this is curious enough to read it btw!

30. Is there a book that changed your life?

This made me procrastinate tf out of answering this ask. I was gonna go with the picture of dorian gray as probably the first book I ever engaged in ~literary discourse~ with but I think my final answer is a children's book

Ami: Child of the Stars (and the rest of the trilogy) by Enrique Barrios is something I obsessively read as a 7-8 year old like genuinely every day over and over again. This is a Chilean sci-fi children's series that basically proselytises New Age spirituality and made me so obsessed with like... World peace and utilitarianism and the abolition of money. The backstory for these books is that my aunt gave them to me bc she was in a cult lmao. But yeah I think it shaped my view of humanity and what we could be for the longest time. Definitely changed my life

Thanks for trying to find me! Through a series of comedic mishaps, I wasn't able to actually table this year, but I should be able to next year unless another series of comedic mishaps befall me. But I'm glad you found out about the event otherwise! It's a great little show and I LOVE Vancouver.
