With the help of wonderful @PEPPAJEANN I am bringing you the CARL TATTOOS~ (great for all your artistic reference needs) With and without transparency, in png format.

BUT before you run away with them, COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP AND BRING ME HD SCREENSHOTS OF CARL'S NECKLINE?? (look! tats goes up to the side of the neck, I need more details!)

Aren't they splendid? If that's not a symbol of his relationship with Elijah, what else would it be? The right sleeve's style is obviously Japanese and if we've got a nerd who loves Japanese culture that's Elijah. But let's look closer. First, this is obviously a very Carl tattoo, because skulls. Carl is obsessed with death. If you look at his tacky house: there are skulls fucking everywhere, pinned butterflies, a stuffed owl overlooking the bed, a whole dead giraffe and a near complete tylosaurus (or mosasaurus) skeleton [it's no wonder Carl has a tendency to be dramatic and just die if Markus doesn't do as Carl expects] Woops tangent. So, skulls! But then I also tried to figure what those flowers might be, and orchid rockroses (cistus purpureus) is the closest I could find:

Flimsy petals, pinkish, dark blotches, golden ring of etamines, white stamen... Close enough? So I looked up the meaning of that flower.

OKAY THAT SOUNDS LIKE CARL, I'LL TAKE IT 5 (Carl why!!?)

Then we've got carps forming a Ying and Yang symbol and giving us all ATLA flashbacks. You know what I mean. The symbol represents interconnection between opposite principles. It's a circle, immanence, neutrality. Fitting for a man who never takes responsibility and expects others to be the ones to make a change.

Now, that red-eyed, three-clawed dragon has at least 3 heads. I tried to look up Japanese dragons and interestingly, Yamata no Orochi is one of the few monstrous evil dragons out there, characterized by being a red-eyed abomination with 8 heads, 8 tails, and plants growing over his body. Also requires a diet of human sacrifices, and drops OP artifacts when slayed. Vulnerable to booze. And I'm looking at those flowery things growing from the dragon heads on the tat, like uhmm. Also, Yamata no Orochi symbolizes the concept of "you're never finished until the last task or detail is completed." Which is a mood an artist can relate to, ig. Seems like a Carl thing to go like "Yeah I'm getting of tat of that girl-eating asshole dragon."

Darkus, my beloved pet, decided to ride a little skeleton in the sky. Although it isn't in his characters, it's not common for the type of his species to trust outsiders. And, besides, he's especially violently aggressive towards strangers. But not right now. However, the small child was not at all frightened by the large, foggy creature.

In fact, in the role-playing game with my friend, Darkus belongs to her(because I gave him to her, but I myself play the role for him). However, according to the canon of his world, he has only one owner.

Huh, I drew this just for fun, I don't need prizes.

Review:

At only 49 pages in, the comic is presently establishing world-building and plot points that will take effect later. Though it broadly follows the in-game course of events, the fact the talking flower isn’t who you’d expect gives the character a lot more characterization early on. This flower doesn’t disappear after getting attacked by Toriel, instead following and conversing with Frisk as they go through the Ruins. Yet, soon after Frisk fell in, they were killed instantly with a seed-shaped bullet, so one wonders what the flower’s true motivations are.

Bunnikkila (Underrift)

Review: Underrift's plot is intriguing and filled with mystery. It has bright, full-color pages, and a line-less stylistic shift for scenes in the non-place of the void. It also features a Sans backstory, linking him (through multiple possibilities) to the mysterious W.D. Gaster, the former royal scientist scattered through time and space.

Description:

Frisk should not have survived that fall. ZombieTale is a slow-burning work about a zombie Frisk bringing a zombie apocalypse to the Underground, with all the horror and despair that entails.

Review:

Artistically, this isn’t what you’d expect when hearing “zombie apocalypse story that also takes place in an underground world of monsters.” Yet, the art works very well; it's like a blend of Disney's Frozen (with its indigo/purple/pink-dominant palette) and the 1500s-woodcut-esque art from The Last Apprentice, an old-timey horror book series. Through its texture, palette, and lighting choices, the style conveys isolation and paranoia. Even at its brightest and most colorful there’s a feeling something is not quite safe, not quite right.

Though Frisk is a pandemic-spreading zombie, they’re remarkably sympathetic. While distanced and unaffectionate, one can tell they’re just very hungry and in great pain. As they eat (and infect) more and more monsters, they become slightly less mindless, and able to feel regret for their actions, but are still unable to stop themselves in their pain and hunger.

One day Sans wakes up with a huge scar on his body, one that definitely wasn't there yesterday. And now Sans must keep an eye(socket) on not one, but two humans. What do they want? Keeping that promise to Toriel is going to be harder than he thought...

Review:

Time Scar, a largely black-and-white comic, has crisp lineart and often detailed backgrounds. The trees of Snowdin are especially remarkable in their detail and abundance, and furniture, houses and other boxy objects are perfectly rendered. One can guess at where Sans’ mysterious scar came from; nonetheless readers will be intrigued and want to know exactly what caused it. Adding on to this mystery is why there are two humans: one innocent, another sinister.

Undertalethingems (Unexpected Guests)

Description:

Papyrus messes up his special attack, and shenanigans ensue. But there’s always more to the story, and skeletal dragons are just the beginning.

Review:

The artist is quite skilled at drawing skeletons; Sans’ and Papyrus’ special attacks (which manifested as draconic skeletons) showcase this well. Though largely monochrome, The artist is also remarkably good at drawing Toriel: her look is a perfect blend of an old lady, a mother and a goatlike monster. Asgore is similarly well-drawn, which is especially notable since so many fans find him difficult to draw.

Description:

It's been a year since happily ever after. But, as the latest anti-monster conflict proves, happy endings are not one-time events: they must be constantly maintained. For one particular disturbed flower, happily ever after after is still far away, but that doesn't mean he must travel the long road to recovery alone.

Review:

(Note: Frisk and Chara are both a “she” in this work, for those who don’t like that.) This fanfiction excels in characterization and plot. The work is tonally versatile: its moments vary from quiet, to tense, to action-packed and cinematic. While Asriel-saving works are practically a subgenre in itself, the work nonetheless finds a way to make it unique with the angle of Flowey’s gradual recovery with soul-regeneration medication. Long Road’s human characters, including its new ones, also have well-developed personalities.

Kaitogirl (Kaitogirl's Underfell)

Description:

One work based on the community-owned Underfell AU setting. A human child falls into an underground realm of bitter, cynical monsters who want revenge on humanity, but nonetheless cheers up their lives as they try to return home.

Review:

(Warning: Has blood and swearing) As expected for Underfell, red and black are common colors in this work. But, rather than making everything red and black, colors are often altered to darker, redder and duller shades than in canon. In fact, one could also accurately describe this as “that purple Underfell”: this color-altering often results in shades that are broadly purple. Or, perhaps, one could say “zero-orange Underfell”: there’s practically no orange, and when yellow and green does appear (largely from Flowey) they’re dull shades. By Waterfall, the colors get richer, along with a general jump in art quality. Flowey, as is common for Underfell, is broadly “good” rather than “evil”, but his characterization here is pleasantly close to his canon one nonetheless: he’s grumpy and cynical and prone to getting frustrated with Frisk.

AbsoluteDream (Over the Void)

After the events of Undertale, Frisk, Asriel, and Monster Kid find a secret room in Waterfall while visiting their old home in Mount Ebott. The room contained a mysterious mirror. Venturing through the mirror, they find themselves in an alternate reality where monsters were never sealed underground...but can they ever get back to their own reality?

Review

It’s just par for the course for the acclaimed AbsoluteDream: his art will blow your socks off, figuratively speaking. Over the Void’s art excels in virtually every aspect of comic-making; its flaws are so rare and minor I don’t think anyone not as thorough and critical as me would even notice them (or call them such). If one wasn’t wowed enough, Over the Void occasionally even has stunningly crisp animated panels. Characters’ distinct personalities shine out through facial expressions, body movements, and dialogue. While the plot hasn’t developed much only two chapters (and 76 pages!) in, the build-up is nonetheless intriguing.

Frisk’s personal control of the timeline is used to ensure monsters have a peaceful return to the surface world – but the seven who sealed them underground in the first place have some problems with this.

Review

(Note: Frisk is a “she” in this work, for those who don’t like that.) The Anomaly, by Coffeelemental, is simultaneously the “Saturday Morning Cartoon of Undertale sequels” and the Sistine Chapel of Undertale fan comics in its tone, dedication, polish and detail.

Though its time-travel element and time-skip might seem like a risk to a simple plot, it nonetheless keeps the plot a perfect medium between complexity and simplicity. While some of The Anomaly’s themes (e.g., “With great power [over time] comes great responsibility”) are pretty common in Undertale works with a Frisk-based, Post-Pacifist timeline premise, The Anomaly nonetheless deals with those themes in an interesting way. Characters from the game itself hew closely to their original, nuanced personalities, and its seven human antagonists have remarkable characterization. (derived from the full review)

Review of Kaitogirl’s Underfell

Plot & Other Details

Like many works that trace Frisk’s journey through the Underground, the plot is pretty simple and linear. Frisk rewinding time when killed slightly complicates the timeline, but Frisk has only died three times so far.

As Underfell works go, the work is mild. As expected, there's sometimes blood (though rarely in large amounts), and plenty of swearing. Despite the setting, characters are often mean, cynical, and aggressive rather than outright evil or murderous, and are easily pacified. Situations are also rarely very frightening or violent. Along with its simple, rounded, relatively well-lit style, it's much milder than HorrorTale or the famous Flowey is Not a Good Life Coach.

Characterization

Frisk

Given the situation, Frisk is rather bold, though still friendly and pacifistic. At first, they think they’re dreaming, explaining their unworried approach. However, when Toriel kills them in an escape attempt, they realize they’re not dreaming and break down, sobbing. Yet they quickly recover after dreadful realizations, fights and even death, becoming a happy camper once more. Literally: it's like Frisk is just an experienced camper lost in a bear-filled forest, rather than a strange land of monsters trying to kill them. They even feel safe enough for Flowey to read books and history plaques to them, despite Flowey’s reminder they’re in a hurry. (This might be explained by Frisk being too young to understand the danger they’re in, or realize their power makes them unkillable)

While friendly and forgiving, sometimes Frisk is insistent, such as yanking Flowey out of the ground to put him in a boot and thus carry him into Toriel’s house.

Flowey

In many Underfell works, monsters' morality is basically flipped: good characters are now 'evil'. Thus, the murderous, sociopathic Flowey is now a helpful companion, often carried by Frisk. Though that's true here, Flowey is not sweet or innocent. He is prone to anger, frustration, and indignant outbursts, and sometimes intimidates weaker monsters with a scary face. He says he "can't console people", and smacks Frisk to make them stop sobbing. Flowey knows "in this world, it's kill or be killed", but is sad and resigned about it. Overall, he might be as Flowey once was before choosing murder runs.

In this work, Asriel was once a jerk: he took Chara to his parents while eagerly asking about killing them. Thus, it's likely Flowey is only 'good' because Asriel was once bad. Notably, Flowey mentally calls himself 'Asriel', apparently only coming up with 'Flowey' when Frisk asked for his name.

Toriel

As expected, Toriel is meaner and more violent than in canon. Indeed, Flowey is afraid she'll kill him and Frisk if she spots the two of them, and is surprised when she doesn't. It's likely she outright kills monsters in the Ruins: Flowey notices one hallway is "dustier than usual", and afterward her clothes have dust stains. She’s more disdainful of Flowey than in canon, calling him a 'weed', threatening him, and initially refusing to let him into her house.

Her sadness and long isolation apparently damaged her social skills, or even sanity. Her pie is very burnt, and has so much cinnamon it makes Frisk cough. Having run out of butterscotch, she put in monster dust instead, which isn't at all reasonable. Though she would surely know how bad the pie was, she aggressively insists Frisk eat it and not even think of throwing up afterward. When Frisk tricks her to escape, she calls them ungrateful and burns them alive at the exit.

Yet, she can still be kind: she sheltered Frisk, gave them food, tucked them in and gave them a plushie as they slept. (Though she glares at Flowey for noticing the latter two) Frisk points out her kindness in the fight: they say they don't really want to leave, and that's she's not evil, just lonely and sad. Toriel is stunned. She breaks down, sobs, and says: "Why are you being...so nice to me?” However, she is so deranged she soon "realizes" Frisk's kindness is a trick, a prelude to greater horrors, and she chases them out of the Ruins.

Papyrus & Sans

Sans hasn’t actually changed much. He has a taste for meaner, darker jokes. Compared to other characters, he is uncommitted: he’s neither especially helpful nor harmful to Frisk, though a few of his actions could have gotten Frisk hurt or killed anyway. While he does kill Frisk with an electric shock from a joy buzzer, when Frisk reloads and refuses to shake his hand, he guesses that the buzzer would have probably killed them anyway.

Here, Sans definitely knows about Flowey. Though he knows Alphys had been looking for Flowey, he didn't report him: he found it more entertaining to keep seeing Alphys throw a fit. (Notably, he asks Frisk's name, unlike in canon.)

Papyrus is even more confident and egotistic than before, as shown by the even more muscular snow sculpture of himself. While canon Papyrus never dismissed others for his self-enhancement, this Papyrus does just that, calling Frisk a "pathetic weakling". He is still a skeleton with high standards: while more vicious, he insists on fair puzzles and fights. (despite talking about how much he'll benefit from capturing Frisk)

Art

Though not as polished and precise as other comics, the art improves over time. Indeed, there's a big jump in quality on the last page of the Snowdin arc and later in Waterfall, too. The lineart is crisper, the shading better, and the colors richer. (if very purple) While the hand-lettering has tight and irregular spacing at first, it improves a lot midway through the Snowdin arc.

As appropriate for an "edgy" setting, characters are toothier and spikier, to the point even Moldsmal and Papyrus's house (using icicles) are spiky. As expected for Underfell, characters look scarier, with duller, darker colors. Red and black (unsurprisingly) dominate the work: not only are many characters’ clothes red and black, but even attacks are often red. (Except fire, oddly enough: that's blue instead.) Colors are changed to darker, duller, and redder shades overall.

The right image illustrates about half the colors in Snowdin.

Often, this results in shades one could broadly call "purple", especially reddish purple. For example, the walls of the Ruins are reddish-purple, and sometimes Snowdin's snow is purplish-taupe. The purple-ification is especially obvious with the Echo Flowers (once cyan, now phlox), Waterfall (once dark blue/indigo, now dark bluish purple) and the gratuitous purple Moldsmals. Indeed, it's so purple one could easily call this work "that purple Underfell".

Yet, one could also call this "that low-green Underfell". Other than Flowey's (often dull) green stem, there is practically no green in the Ruins. Things get greener in Snowdin, though the trees are a fairly dull shade. (Oddly so: the trees were actually blue in-game). In Waterfall, green becomes rare once again.

Yellow and orange are rare, too, if less so. Frisk's skin is not mango-yellow, but an only slightly yellowish beige. Monster Kid is mostly a washed-out orange (who gets even less yellow by Waterfall), and wears red-and-black clothes. Even monsters' outfits have less yellow, such as Papyrus, Shopkeeper Temmie and especially the Nice Cream Man. In some cases, though, the work adds yellow: Napstablook and Toriel have yellow eyes, Sans has a yellow tooth, and Undyne's armor has yellow accents.

One can get used to the limited color scheme over its hundreds of pages. But the bright, green-and-yellow palette of Flowey’s dream sequence in Page 126 and Waterfall’s yellow history-plaque flashbacks remind the reader of the limited colors.Even the comic itself lampshades its dark, limited palette: Papyrus's color tile puzzle is various shades of grey, black, and white.

Conclusion

For those who want something a little scarier and unhappier than canon Undertale, but aren't quite ready for darkfic or standard Underfell approaches, Kaitogirl's Underfell is a perfect middle ground.
