Trick Or Treat - Activities of the Week

The last week of festivities are here! Don't miss your chance to get in on all of the Howl-o-ween fun before October comes to an end. The Clean-Up Crew is making the finishing touches on the Pendulum repairs and, thanks to your generous donations, the Rec Center has reached their fundraising goal in terms of building the skatepark in honor of Mason Mahir.

In other news, it is with great sorrow that your Town Hall has announced that come November 1st, if the Town's resident Mayor is not found, they will begin the process to hold a re-election. They are still holding out hope that both Dhruv Mehta and Meena Raja will be found alive and well. But, given that the end of the month is nearing, they can only hold out for so long before they will need to elect new leadership. If you are interested, in putting your name in the running, feel free to swing by Town Hall and submit your name in contention (aka shoot a message to the main for a future plot drop to come).

Meanwhile, the residents who oppose this potential re-election have taken storm, protesting outside of Town Hall with signs throughout all hours of the day and the True Crime Podcast continues on. A resident who runs every morning around the dried up lake over in Shadow Lake called in to the podcast to report that they had found several discarded medical vials that seemed to have been from the Hospital. They went on to give a rant about how dangerous it is to dump medical equipment out in the woods for anyone to find. But, should this be a sign that those still searching for the missing residents should double back to Shadow Lake?

MONDAY/CONTINUING ALL WEEK LONG

Fortune Telling- Swing by Good Omens where the fae have offered their fortune telling services to tell you what might happen in the near future. Whether through tarot or palm reading, your future will unfold in their hands. But be careful, if their reading is grim, it’s likely to come true, and much sooner than you think…

Town Clean-Up Crew- Meet at the Rec Center every morning where you will then be assigned different locations around town to help fix up. There is also a donation booth set up for anyone who wants to donate towards the Pendulum repairs and the skatepark.

Protesting Town Hall- If you are against a re-election and want to hold out until your current Mayor is found, join the protestors in front of Town Hall to fight the power!

TUESDAY

Cauldron Luck- It’s time to show off those cooking skills, Coven members! The Coven will be hosting its second ever potluck. Bring your most tasty dish down to Starlight Bar where you and the town locals can enjoy dinner and bonding with your community.

WEDNESDAY

Trick or Treating- Children will be roaming around this Halloween making sure to trick any homeowners (or, let’s face it, renters) that don’t have any treats! Be sure to answer your doors and drown them in sugar or leave out a full bowl before attending any parties lest you fall victim to an eerie egging. The shops in town are also in the holiday spirit and will be handing out candy to dressed up children (and adults if you ask nicely enough). But, be careful kids, teens and adults who have yet to grow up! The Haunted House on the Hill does not take kindly to those who play ding dong ditch. If you try, you may find yourself zapped with a sudden bolt of lightening.

FRIGHT FEST

You’re Invited To…

A fangtastic weekend to remember. With Halloweekend kicking off, the humans in the city are all trying to nail down their plans to make sure they can have some skele-fun. While, each and every supernatural whose made their way into town has already been invited to a mortal-free weekend of tricks and treats, hosted by KP Event Planning at Coney Island- with all of the howl-o-ween festivities one could possible ask for.

REMINDERS

In roleplay time the event will span from October 30th to October 31st. This is a 2-Part Event with the first half of the event being on October 30th in game play, so please make sure all of your event threads are set before midnight/October 31st seeing that part 2 of this event will be heavily plot driven.

OOC, the event will start on October 31st with a plot drop happening on November 6th.

The tag for the event will be darkestevent5. Everything from pictures, outfits, threads, and etc. should be under this tag. Starters should have both the starter and event tag.

This event is mandatory. We ask that you please make event threads priority and everything else second and, as always, any big plots should be discussed with the admins before playing them out on the dash. If you have any big plots you want to do let us know.

As for anyone looking to bring in new characters, we will continue to have regular acceptances up until November 5th, but we will be temporarily pausing on acceptances during part 2 of the event as to not have new characters coming in during a ton of plot drops, so if you would like to bring in any new characters, we strongly encourage you to get those apps in before the 5th.

I was planning on doing an ‘association’ chart, where I assign a tarot card to each skele based on meaning/symbolism/etc. And I probably still will. But now I’m also considering doing a version where I just sit down with one of my decks and do a draw for each skele and see what comes up and where it might go. Anyone have any thoughts on that? I’m not set, but it was an idea.

I really like ur oracle of the moon card, what materials did you use? I haven't figured out yet what media I should use, the cards' matte texture isn't something I typically draw on

It was something I went back and forth on because the cards don’t have the absorbent quality that most drawing paper does, so I knew it would be tricky. I did a light sketch in pencil, and then I thought I would try doing the background at least in alcohol markers to test how well it worked. I was surprised to see that, unable to fully sink into the paper, it kind of defused like watercolor instead of streaking like marker, and gave it a fuzzy, blendable quality I kind of liked. One thing I quickly noticed though was that while the marker was still wet, you could blend colors very well, but if you put another color on top after it it dried, it would pull up the color underneath.

Funnily enough, I used this limitation to my advantage and used it to highlight and blend, and it actually looked great on the sense of depth and space in the beacon. The ironic part is, that I fully intended to use acrylic paint, but at each new step, I experimentally tried marker first to see how it worked, telling myself I could paint over it if I messed up. (Though I will admit I was slightly hesitant to commit to acrylics if it came to that because it would make the card heavier and the texture distinct unless it was very thin paint).

I ended up doing the whole thing in alcohol marker (I used prismacolor and copics) and blocking out the colors and sections as I went, and I was most nervous about the skin tones and the gilded edges of the beacon because those needed to pop right and might’ve been more fit for acrylic—if it weren’t for the fact that the details were so tiny that I might have lost my mind if I had to do that with a brush. After I let the marker fully dry, I used liner pens for the outside, I used a .005 mm if you’re interested, and white gel pen for the stars. I would let the gel pen get a bit dry so some of the dots were far smaller than others, with just a couple fully pressed in dots for a few of the bigger stars.

In general, I’d probably recommend an acrylic based paint pen, like posca, or else a thin acrylic paint if you’ve got a tiny brush and steady hands, because then it won’t risk smudging as much or stripping away the color underneath if you apply a new layer. But it will give you a more opaque look. If you like the kind of blendy-transparent look and feel of watercolors, I would use alcohol marker and then just be careful how much you sweat on the card lol. Do not use actual watercolor on it though, it will warp and ruin your card, and the pigment will not absorb into the paper properly.

Tarot 101: Choosing a Deck

Whether you’re new to tarot or already wrist deep in cards and readings, knowing your process for choosing a deck is important.  But what do you even consider? There are so many elements to each individual deck from art to school of thought to even your personal beliefs. Basically, there’s a lot to consider (though, I’ve found the “follow your heart/intuition” method works out pretty well). Let’s get into some approaches you might take for finding that perfect deck.

Let’s Start with a Myth

Ok, depending on your beliefs, you might not think this is a myth (and I won’t argue with you if you believe it), but it certainly is in my experience as a tarot reader. So, the myth: A tarot deck must be gifted to you. 

I have five decks, and of those, three have been gifted to me by one person. While there is something really special about having a deck gifted to you (especially if that deck really meshes with who you are), the deck I have the strongest bond with is one of the ones I bought for myself (my Linestrider if you’re wondering). So, if you find yourself browsing decks in a witchy store, or a bookstore, or even an online store, and you want to buy that gorgeous deck that’s jumping out at you, treat yourself, witch! Don’t let this myth hold you back.

But Wait, Let’s Talk Aesthetics

Speaking of that gorgeous deck that’s jumping out at you, what is it about it that makes you want it so much? A tricky thing about buying a deck, especially on an impulse (though, we love to buy decks on an impulse), is that you might not really know what you’re getting. The box is a great place to start, but here are some other places to check on those aesthetics to make sure you’re happy with the whole deck and not just those card previews.

Know your style. If you don’t like minimalist art, don’t buy a minimalist deck. Simple as that. If you find a deck, no matter how good the pricing or the packaging, if you know it doesn’t match you and your practice, you’re probably going to have a harder time working with and bonding with that deck.

Search the full deck. Thank goodness for the internet! For many decks, especially those that have been out for a while, you can find pictures of full decks to preview the whole deck before you buy it.

Choose a deal breaker card. Pick a card that you love. This might be your favorite card or the card you feel the most connected with in any given deck (mine is The Moon for both). When you’re looking at a new deck, if you don’t like that card, you might want to rethink that purchase.

Check out the deck’s app. Many decks have free or very cheap digital versions on iOS and Android that can make it easy to preview and even work with a deck before you buy the physical version.

Speaking of Digital

Choosing the “medium” for your deck is important, too. If you’re a tech witch, you might want to consider something like a digital deck or an app to meet your cartomantic needs. A good place to start for this is The Fool’s Dog which is essentially a hub for digital decks. Some of them are even free! Digital decks can also be a good solution for closet witches that might be worried about leaving tarot cards lying around.

Now, you don’t have to go digital! Just know what you want your deck to look and feel like. This means knowing how you feel about everything from mini decks to DIY decks.

Deck Stalking

Places like Tumblr and Instagram make “deck stalking”--or following a deck creator’s every move until the deck is actually available for sale--really easy. “Stalking” a deck is also a good way to pace yourself with getting to know it. You’ll probably get to see most of the cards and start looking at a lot of the symbology before you ever have to drop it in your Etsy cart or donate to a Kickstarter.

Back to School

Paying attention to the “school” that dream deck belongs to is important, especially if you’re a beginner. If you’ve been reading about and studying the standard Rider-Waite system and you pick up a deck with literal wild cards, you’re going to be a bit confused. When you buy a deck, know what tradition it follows and if the creator has removed, changed, or added any of those cards.

Being non-traditional doesn’t make a deck better or worse! It just might give you an extra learning curve.

It’s all About the Books

Personally, I love decks that come with nice guide books. Even though I am familiar with all of the card meanings and tend to be a fairly intuitive reader in general, sitting down with a new deck’s book and finding out the creator’s intentions for how it should be read and even giving yourself that refresher can be really rewarding. Plus, it’s one more book to add to your witchy collection.

Yesterday I was sent this AMAZING deck called Skele Tarot, by the artist @stephmayton_art . And if you saw my stories yesterday, I promised to share a “getting to know me” post about this deck.
Right off the bat, my first impressions are amazing. The sides of the cards a gilded silver, which is such an incredible touch, I didn’t even realize it came with until I got it. As shown in the above picture, each suit is super adorable, with these fun and whimsical little skeleton friends. At first, I was concerned about the backs of the cards have a single directional image, for picking card, but quickly realized that this won’t be an issue. With the uniformity and roundness of the image on the back, it allows for upright and reversal anonymity. 
The price of this deck, matched with the details and quality, really make it a bargain for your buck and is ABSOLUTELY worth it! You are definitely an eclectic ball of good-natured chaos, and that is SO Papsy’s vibe. He adores how completely genuine you are, and how you throw everything you have into so much of what makes you you. Being an art student isn’t easy, and neither is working two (or three if you count your readings) jobs, so he is constantly impressed by the work ethic you demonstrate, even if it makes you exhausted. However, he is not above picking you up, laying you down on the couch, and then collapsing on top of you to make you rest when he feels you’ve become too exhausted.

He likes running his phalanges across the shortest part of your hair. It tickles but feels electric at the same time, but that may just be his love for you. This skele is ALL about the mundane. To him, the mundane reminds him that he is on the Surface and that he doesn’t have to fight for survival anymore. He likes doing chores, grocery shopping, or any other miscellaneous errands because those are the biggest “to-do’s” he ever has to worry about ever again. He’s even more contented when he finds out that you want to come with him. This is all he has ever wanted in life. It might take a while to become so comfortable with doing just the mundane, just because he has to get used to this new life. Needless to say, you have made the transition so much easier.

He’ll sheepishly ask you for a psychic reading every once in a while, especially if he’s feeling anxious. A lot of the time, a psychic reading won’t just tell him about his future, but also about some alternate perspectives of what is happening to him in the present, which can in turn help him manifest his anxiety into something productive so that he can possibly fix what’s making him so terrified in the first place. Not always, but to him, it’s worth a shot. Plus, sitting across from you and staring into your eyes has a way of putting him at ease.  

You can bet that if he was around to watch you chug soy sauce for 3 dollars, he would have tried to one up you by doing it for free. He’s competitive in those weird ways, of who can be the most random, weird, or just plain chaotic, if the mood strikes him. You two have caused his brother to age prematurely with all of the odd shenanigans you two get up to. There’s no one else that Papsy would rather have by his side as you both get scolded by his brother.

Pick-Up Line: You’re psychic, but I think I am too, because I see you and me together in the near future.
