On my first watch of Age of Resistance I wondered why everyone treated the Scientist so poorly when he is probably the single most important Skeksis in the Castle.

And on later watches, I realized that’s the point.

He is truly indispensable and if he and the other Skeksis realized that, he’d be a threat to the Emperor’s power.

So he’s treated as essential and also as a figure of mockery. He’s relied on but not respected. Except maybe as lip service.

Very similar to some jobs in our world.

“Hmm…” Ekt takes a few seconds to think and then smiles widely, obviously very proud of his choice “a Crystal bat!!! As it would compliment that horrid uniform that the scientist has him wear alll the time!!! And…” Ekt looks away, talking in a lower tone “he certainly is as loyal as one…”

needless to say i am hooting and hollering as the scientist is locked in the punishment cage and the other skekses are ritualistically chanting about punishment. not because i particularly dislike skekTek or even for perverted reasons. it just brings me great joy to see the evil bird freaks do evil bird freak shit to each other

Part 2 of the Heretic and the Wanderer comic from Jim Henson Presents!

What’s interesting is that we don’t get a lot of follow-up on part 1.

skekGra received his iconic injury in a scuffle with the Scientist last time. And he’s mad about it. But he’s more mad that the Scientist hurt his Gelfling. Killed one of his Gelfling. There’s some possessiveness in the protectiveness.

He vows vengeance on the Scientist but knows the Emperor won’t back him up if skekTek’s offense is “just” harming a Gelfling.

But then the focus of the comic shifts to urGoh, wandering the desert and having to deal with the fallout of drama that is half a continent away. skekGra’s head injury knocks urGoh out. He’s found by some Dousan who allow urGoh to travel with them to recuperate and learn.

This is some pretty great Dousan focus.

Something Sandmaster Atal says when urGoh is brought to him really stands out.

“If it is what I think it may be, it is no friend to the Gelfling. But neither is the desert, and we find our home and haven here.”

Good attitude.

And it’s interesting that both skekGra and urGoh’s part of the story so far have them bonding with Gelfling.

urGoh travels with the Dousan for a season but when he learns that they’re headed to a festival on the desert’s edge that some Skeksis will attend, he freaks out. Or as much as a Mystic can freak out. He does insist that he must leave right now and not go to the festival. So urGoh flies off on a Crystal Skimmer. Until he’s hit with another incapacitating head pain which sends him falling off the Skimmer.

urGoh just don’t got no luck.

If urGoh had gone ahead to the festival, I’d guess that he would have met skekGra there. I still think that’s going to happen but it’s a bit complicated by urGoh lying unconscious in the middle of the desert.

If skekGra is at the festival, I’m wondering if he’s there as a way to honor the Dousan by sending the Emperor’s specialest guy… or whether it’s a punishment to skekGra for falling out of favor. The Age of Resistance show suggests the Skeksis don’t like the Dousan because of their supposed death worship.

Excited to see how urGoh and skekGra’s halves of the story come together. And will someone get this Mystic a fainting couch!

so few people Got This when aor came out and instead opted to woobify it but the thing with skekTek that makes it such a compelling villain to me are the layers of hypocrisy and misery and self-centeredness. it's ability to correctly identify a problem (i.e draining gelfling is damaging thra, the crystal gives less the more is taken from it) and come to the conclusion that the skeksis should withhold or find another way—not out of any compassion for their victims, but out of a sense of logic—then immediately go back on this and continue the drainings all for the sake of respect and approval in the eyes of the emperor; someone it ultimately doesn't even like at the end of the day. because while it is a scientist it is also a lord and will not give up this status and the respect it feels entitled to. because while it is the lowest of the skeksis' court and frequently abused or mistreated by them it would gleefully throw those it deems beneath it into the meatgrinder. and of course by the time of the original movie/novelization this has evolved into full-blown mad scientist behavior.

he's so vile but none of the other skeksis are in a position quite like this and i love that they could've so easily left skekTek the way it was in the 80s film but instead they created this whole extra layer to flesh out Why It's Like This and it's so horrifically meaty.
