i will admit upfront one reason i haven't been Super active among others is that i've been obsessively playing both darkest dungeon games and the enemy designs have me thinking about jim's original skeksis notes that were nastier. the children of the 80s deserved a somehow worse skektek who was trailing around old grody used gauze and medical waste bags just on its body.

something cosmic in a deeply cruel and deeply funny way about me remaking this blog and immediately being unable to use it for days because i hurt my eye

my old rambling about skekTek being omnidisciplinary but prone to hitting blocks in it's research and repeated mistakes because the part of its original being that had the skill and focus to sit with one craft and focus and hone it went to urTih. onto smth there.

probably slithering back onto the menti blog for the first of the night but god it really does feel good to be back. dark crystal rpc grabbing me by the scruff was not how iexpected my day to go at all

so few people Got This when aor came out and instead opted to woobify it but the thing with skekTek that makes it such a compelling villain to me are the layers of hypocrisy and misery and self-centeredness. it's ability to correctly identify a problem (i.e draining gelfling is damaging thra, the crystal gives less the more is taken from it) and come to the conclusion that the skeksis should withhold or find another way—not out of any compassion for their victims, but out of a sense of logic—then immediately go back on this and continue the drainings all for the sake of respect and approval in the eyes of the emperor; someone it ultimately doesn't even like at the end of the day. because while it is a scientist it is also a lord and will not give up this status and the respect it feels entitled to. because while it is the lowest of the skeksis' court and frequently abused or mistreated by them it would gleefully throw those it deems beneath it into the meatgrinder. and of course by the time of the original movie/novelization this has evolved into full-blown mad scientist behavior.

he's so vile but none of the other skeksis are in a position quite like this and i love that they could've so easily left skekTek the way it was in the 80s film but instead they created this whole extra layer to flesh out Why It's Like This and it's so horrifically meaty.

finished reading the novelization of the original movie earlier and its still got me feeling some kind of way

it has this very strong… atmosphere, thats very deep to me in a dreamlike, hooked-into-subconscious way. it feels like a memory. the writing style and brian frouds art invoke a specific heavy nostalgia i cant describe easily
