Okay, it's the Reki post!! Stream of consciousness here because I'm too busy to overthink things as much as I normally do. It's a Sunday. Sundays are for tuning vocals lifted off a fresh bowl. Sundays are for the gays. Sundays are for flying kites in the park with your best pal. Note: see if Caro wants to go fly a kite in the park later. So, you know, no time to be writing longwinded essays in the face of preserving whatever whimsy is left to be grasped in the wild. But here's what I got!

For as long as I can remember, I've been keenly aware of what it feels like to be second best, late to the party, falling behind, forever catching up...and Connor Quest wrote a perfect song about that years ago. There's even a remake that I played piano on. So this song isn't that, at least not completely. Actually, as it came together in the in-between-uploads rush it came together in, I noticed it really being about creative burnout as much as anything else. When I watched SK8, I think what stuck with me the most about Reki's rough patch wasn't just his feelings of inadequacy as a skater compared to what Langa and the others were capable of, it was that however much he tried not to care, he ultimately couldn't help it. It's a crush of conflicting emotions when you think you no longer care about your passions, yet being away from them hurts just as much.

Musically: I've been working on an album for way too long now, and most of the tracks on it are some kind of boombap song or have a similar feel. It's the style of rap I'm most comfortable with, the style I usually enjoy performing the most, and the kind of beat that tends to make me feel the most creative. I don't think it's what comes close to performing best on my channel (electroswing has kind of taken that over pretty handily), and that's why I've mostly contained it to the album lately, but I wanted to put out at least one more track like this before letting my channel be what it probably needs to be if it's gonna grow. There are some Freeced listeners who have been around asking for a SK8 track for a LONG time, and while this may not be the only one I ever do, it's nice to get it out there before this turning point. I'm also not sad about narrowing the focus of my channel, because collaborating and being involved in other projects (like Out After Winter) as well as learning new skills and continuing to work on my album is keeping me pretty sharp.

In fact, since releasing this song, I think I've found a little more peace with my relationship to burnout than I had at the time. I think it is something that can come and go, and maybe it's okay to sometimes measure my worth by more than just what I create. I don't need to dread being pulled back to the things I love doing, just as I don't need to dread losing my passion for them at times. Lately I've been focusing on the dynamics of my music as much as the content, and I'm starting to see the highs and lows of my compositions reflecting back the peaks and valleys of living an ordinary life.

Anyway, I never know how to end these, but there are some of my thoughts! I hope you like the song, I know it kinda died on YouTube but I don't really mind, if it's the kind of song that someone will find five years from now and relate to, then it's doing what it's supposed to do! And not to sound like a content creator, but, you know. Big things coming.

Hi! Sorry it took so long to answer! I made a list pretty quickly but I feel like I’m probably forgetting some people since my interests are constantly changing. Also some characters have more reasons I love them than others. Sometimes my brain just sees a character and is like “oh yes that’s the one”. So these are all very stream of consciousness/kinda word vomit. Hope you like it! 😅❤️

In no particular order…

1. Xie Lian from TGCF - I want to protect him with my life. He’s gone through so much yet remains such a good person. He deserves the world. Also surprisingly funny (he made me snort multiple times).

2. Hinata Shouyou from Haikyuu - I am so weak for sunshine characters and Hinata is the Sun personified. He works so hard and I love every step of progress he makes. Also gremlin. Probably my all time favorite character.

3. Kenma Kozume from Haikyuu - Kenma is a very relatable character for me. Also he’s adorable and super smart. I love moments where people underestimate Kenma before realizing they’re playing his game. Also cat boy.

4. Reki Kyan from Sk8 the Infinity - Another sunshine! Reki is also kind of relatable to me though with his struggles! I love him more for it and how he finally realized his love for skateboarding. I just want to give him a hug. Baby boy.

5. Edward Elric from FMA - Another character with amazing growth over the course of the series (both literally and figuratively lol)! He’s one of those characters that make you feel like you grow with him. Super smart and resourceful! Love his determination and journey throughout the series. Also he’s a little shit.

6. Killua Zoldyck from HxH - Literally the reason I started watching HxH was for Killua. He has amazing character development and I love seeing him get away from his family and become happy! He’s super badass when he fights too! Also kind of a cat boy lol

7. Wen Qing from MDZS - Beautiful, smart, sassy, amazing. Literally fell in love with her at first sight. She’s a doctor but can also knock you out with her needles. Doesn’t put up with bullshit. An amazing sister to both Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian. She made me cry a ton.

8. Olivier Armstrong from FMA - Also a strong woman (my types are literally sunshine guys and badass women lol). All of the women in FMA are beautifully written and I just want to clap every time Olivier is on screen. The queen.

9. Lio Fotia from Promare - Super pretty but also super gremlin. Freaking love his design. Kind of reminds me of a chihuahua (thinks he’s bigger than he is). Can hear him yell “KRAY FORESIGHT” in my dreams.

10. Yona from Akatsuki No Yona - Another badass woman! Yona has such growth from the beginning of the manga being a spoiled princess to currently being a badass warrior and leader! She fought for every single bit of progress she made and it shows! But I also love how she doesn’t lose her femininity or kindness to get to that point. She is just as strong with those things.

i love kojiro's range tbh. he has a dad moment with both reki and langa, gently encouraging them to find their way back to each other before they end up alone. and then he launches himself into a cliff face in a move that might break his ankles because he absolutely *needs* to do a skateboard race against his childhood friend who turned evil. the duality of man.

ok i lied i have one more thought: i love the inversion of biblical themes in adam's warped 'eden.' adam himself as both creator and destroyer, creating 'eden' and ruining anyone who comes close to him inside it. reflecting the 'love' given to him by his three aunts (the father, the son, and the holy spirit, if you'd like to reach). the snake, tadashi, as a warrior, facing off against adam. the apple, reki, offering salvation instead of temptation. it's just fun isn't it? plus queer love as salvation rules in general
