Was Hakstol a bad coach or do you think there are just personality/coaching style differences that lead to him being canned (hahaha get it?). Obviously this is speculative.
Both.
It's simple, and it's both.
A shorter Stereanalysis for you, under the cut!
All stats, except where noted, are taken from MoneyPuck.
Dave Hakstol was a Jack Adams finalist last year. Generally, the Jack Adams and its finalist positions are given to those coaches who manage to engineer great one-year improvements in their team (see: Lindy Ruff [NJD 22-23], Darryl Sutter [CGY 21-22], Alain Vigeneault [PHI 19-20]). And often, these coaches cannot keep this level of success the next year and then summarily get canned (see: Lindy Ruff [NJD 22-23], Darryl Sutter [CGY 21-22], Alain Vigeneault [PHI 19-20]). (Trust me, half the Jack Adams candidates are out quick within 1-2 seasons after. These are just the more egregious.)
Seattle caught fire with an unsustainable 22-23 season. This is true. The 23-24 season was also slightly uncharacteristically bad regression from the team. It highlighted:
- They have one of the worst shooting% in the league. 7.68% 5 on 5 is fifth worst in the NHL, only above the actual bottom feeders (CHI, SJS, ANA) and, somehow, FLA. All situations, it's 9.11%, fourth worst (CHI, PHI, SJS are below SEA).
(Interestingly, they are the most blocked team in the NHL, with 30.82% of their shots being blocked in all situations. Additionally, 32.64% of their unblocked shots miss the net in all situations. This is fourth worst in the NHL, with only CAR, VAN, and SJS with more.)
- Tied into the last point, they cannot score. 2.57 goals for per 60 in all situations is fourth worst in the NHL (CHI, SJS, ANA are even worse). 5 on 5, this is 2.11 and fifth worst (SJS, CHI, ANA, WSH).
(Another thing that doesn't help is a 47.52% faceoff percentage. It's only eighth worst in the league, but winning faceoffs helps establish possession, leading to scoring chances.)
- They're also not generating high-danger or medium-danger chances. SEA is third worst in all situations high-danger shots for, at 252, tied with WSH (usual suspects CHI and SJS top the list). They're fourth worst in all situations medium-danger shots for, at 575, tied with DET (usual suspects CHI, ANA, SJS above). Sixth and eighth worst, respectively, at 5 on 5.
- Plus, they go on losing skids. A lot. I counted at least five separate 4+ game losing streaks. 2 were 8-game losing streaks. Outside of the 1 9-game winstreak, Seattle failed to string more than 2 wins in a row all season.
- Running Daccord dry does not help. 23 starts in 25 games is batshit.
There's a few other issues, too. Let's talk about those.
Seattle's success in 2022-23 was strongly due to their ability to "roll four lines". Generally, on a hockey team, your top two lines are offensive. Your third line is a "checking" line that shuts down other teams' top sixes while offering a few goals in a pinch. Your fourth line is an "energy" line that plays short sprint shifts to "disrupt" other teams.
Seattle had one of the best fourth lines last year with Donato-Geekie-Sprong, who were highly effective at their roles plus contributed meaningful offense (27, 29, 46 points, respectively). Seattle got rid of all three in the offseason last year (CHI-BOS-DET, respectively), which considerably thinned out their four-line assault. Replacements such as Yamamoto, Tatar, and Bellemare have struggled and been unable to find lasting success.
Additionally, Seattle's been having trouble developing its kids. When the entire team went through a points drought this year, its new-era star Beniers was hit severely, going from 57 points and a Calder last year to 37 this year. Wright, too, has not had meaningful NHL time yet, which is concerning for a former consensus 1OA. While Seattle's strategy was never to "contend now", and it did not anticipate looking like a solid contender in 22-23, it did not adjust to this newer timetable and thus took a massive step back. This is what got Hakstol canned.
Interestingly, the "character" remarks seem to be refuted by Ron Francis (the GM) as well as Eberle and McCann, all of whom went to bat for Hakstol and said nobody "threatened" not to play for Hakstol if he remained the coach of the Kraken. I'm sure there's some truth to it, but, at the end of the day, Hakstol just did a bad job coaching.

But it was Jesal and Jesal is LA based. He was called for the first set of photos in 2022 and now this. Chris uses him all the time in LA too. Just like at Ghoated, Ana's boyfriend got a singular Pap photo, but did you see 14 actual magazine blurbs about him and what he was wearing? Jesal of course was gonna snap other celebs, but he was called specifically for the newlywed couple radiating love and happiness and privacy glow. /
So is Diggsy who is the other pap who took the pics as well. They are in partnership together. They go where they are paid, asked, assigned to go. They are 2 of the top pap photographers in the world. The pics are sectioned by the celebrities teams and they pay for the ones they want and then you get the articles. Jesal and Diggsy could have been arranged by any one of the guests teams but probably SJ.
Have you looked at Diggzy’s IG? Go look. And see which celebrities he shared from the party. Not Scarlett

Destry Allyn Spielberg’s Directing Debut Will Be ‘Please Don’t Feed The Children’; ‘Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery Starring
By Mike Fleming Jr
March 22, 2023 8:30am
Michelle Dockery is set to star in Destry Allyn Spielberg’s directorial debut, Please Don’t Feed the Children. The elevated genre feature film will begin production late April in New Mexico. Scripted by Paul Bertino, the psychological thriller is produced by Jason Dubin and his Perry Street Films, Josh Kesselman and Michael Hagerty.
In Please Don’t Feed the Children, after a viral outbreak ravaged the country’s adult population, a group of orphans heads south in search of a new life, only to find themselves at the mercy of a deranged woman harboring a dangerous secret.
Spielberg, daughter of The Fabelmans helmer, will do this film before the one on which she originally expected to make her feature debut, Four Assassins (and a Funeral). The latter, a Kingsman-meets-Knives Out meets-Succession-style script by Ryan Hooper that made the 2021 Black List, will percolate a bit longer but is still in the works from Basil Iwanyk & Erica Lee’s Thunder Road Pictures. The pic will just move back as the other one was ready to go.
Spielberg won Best Thriller at City of Angels Women’s Film Festival in 2022 for her short film, Let Me Go the Right Way. She co-wrote the screenplay with Owen King, and it premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, with Hopper Penn and Brian D’Arcy James starring. Her work as an actress includes Licorice Pizza and an episode of the miniseries I Know This Much Is True.
Said Spielberg: “I am so grateful to have the opportunity to bring this story to the screen with such a collaborative and inspirational team. This picture is so much more than just a horror film. It’s a dream come true to work with a talent such as Michelle Dockery. I am excited to elevate the genre with our incredible cast and crew.”
Dockery is Emmy nominated for playing Lady Mary on Downton Abbey and its two film spinoffs. She also was Emmy-nommed for the Scott Frank-created limited series Godless and co-starred in the Guy Ritchie-directed The Gentlemen and opposite Chris Evans in the Morten Tyldum-directed Apple TV+ limited series Defending Jacob and the SJ Clarkson-directed limited Netflix series Anatomy of a Scandal. She just wrapped Stephen Knight’s six-part limited series This Town.
Dockery is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, Hamilton Hodell and Johnson Shapiro Slewett; Spielberg is repped by WME, Sugar 23 and Gang Tyre.

World Junior Recap Day 1
Alan Letang needs to hear these 4 words: Play Macklin Celebrini more. In a 5-2 win over the Fins, Celebrini (Draft eligible, 2024)was by far Canada’s best player, although he was deployed as their 4th line center. With limited powerplay time against a disciplined Finnish team, Celebrini rarely saw the ice. If Canada looks to have success against the wagon of Sweden, they will need to deploy the Terrier center more than today.
Owen Beck (MTL, 2022 2nd) looked great for Canada today, and while he did not get on the scoresheet he was easily Canada’s best penalty killer and was the key cog of the Canadian checking line which scored the first two Canadian goals. Look for him to start scoring soon.
Denton Mateychuk has taken over as Canada’s number one d and had a strong showing where he was a plus 3 and had an assist.
For the Fins, Niklas Kokko (SEA, 2022 2nd) was excellent and made some key stops to keep the Fins in the game. Up front, Kostas Helenius (2024 Draft eligible) and Lenni Hammenaho (NJ, 2023 2nd) were dangerous, although not factoring into the 5-2 decision.
Canada can continue to rely on a strong penalty kill (⅚) and excellence from Mathis Rosseau (2024 Draft eligible) to bail themselves out. Next up is the Germans who will playing their first game of the tournament. I expect a score similar to today but with the Canadians further dominating the shot and high danger scoring metrics.
Across the Tournament:
The US completed a routine 4-1 win over Norway, I really expected a larger score differential.
The Swedes powered over the undisciplined Latvians 6-0, Lekkerimaki (VAN, 2022 1st) and Bystedt (SJ, 2022 1st) both scored 2 goals apiece, look for that Swedish powerplay to continue to be lethal as the tournament runs on.
Slovakia upsets (???) Czechia 6-2 with their firepower on display. Servac Petrovsky (MIN, 2022 6th) dazzled with a three point performance.

@princeasimdiya12 has replied to this post asking "Which industry is this hurting exactly? Because MHA is one of the leading shonen series of the modern era and is destined to be a cash cow like DBZ and One Piece. Plus it's not like Horikoshi is actually going to acknowledge the complainers/critics given how successful his series has become."
And honestly a quick google search is more than enough to tell you how leaks hurt the manga industry, the anime industry, the video game industry, or really any industry ever (there's a reason actors from prominent franchises a la Tom Holland of MCU fame aren't getting movie scripts until they're actually filming in recent years) I'll give you a quick breakdown here.
Leaks hurt entertainment industries for a VARIETY of reasons. One of the biggest is that leaks are actually ILLEGAL in most cases, especially in Japan. Japan's copyright laws are incredibly strict and mangakas aren't even allowed to leak their own series without direct permission from the company that is publishing their manga. Meaning if Horikoshi or a member of his team is publishing these leaks without explicitly asking their bosses at Shounen Jump for permission, they are breaching their contract with the company and the company is allowed to take legal action against anyone involved with the leaks.
Legal action doesn't just stop at the mangaka and those involved with creating the manga though. Fans who upload and circulate these leaks, no matter what country they are from, can also be held responsible for illegally distributing this content. It's piracy, plain and simple. And while I know that most people on the internet don't give a singular fuck about pirating content, that doesn't mean that it isn't illegal. In fact, publishers for manga such as Attack on Titan and animators for the Berserk and Psycho Pass animes have taken or threatened to take legal action against people who upload and circulate leaks
And just because a series is popular doesn't mean that there won't be consequences to the mangaka for breaching a contract or for doing something that the publishing company doesn't like. If viewership for BNHA falls below a certain number or if the series starts to become a source of negative press instead of positive press, it could result in Shounen Jump forcing Horikoshi to rewrite and redraw certain chapters or rush through certain arcs in order to gain viewers back. Worst case scenario, the series could be dropped by SJ entirely. And while the BNHA manga is soon coming to an end and likely won't be cancelled at this stage of its life, SJ still has a large amount of control over how Horikoshi writes and wraps up the series. In fact, there are quite a few arcs and character choices within the BNHA manga that are heavily theorized to be Horikoshi making uncharacteristic decisions with the sole purpose of trying to gain viewership back. And with the series ending soon, if popularity for BNHA dies down, it will heavily reduce the chances that Horikoshi will be able to make any spinoffs of any variety, and he may not be able to have any more work published with SJ after BNHA is over.
Leaks affect viewership. In fact, when it comes to HUGE series like One Piece specifically, there is an extremely detailed article written here about how much harm leaks and spoilers cause to the One Piece fandom and community, and this article was written in June of this year (2022). The points made in this article are true for all fandoms. Much of the community is having to log off of social media for days or even weeks at a time to make sure that they aren't going to be spoiled for something that happens in the manga before it's been officially released. The fact that leaks for the next chapter are sometimes coming out before the previous chapter has even been officially published means that detailed discussions about theories and wonder for where the next chapter will lead us to are virtually impossible to have anymore. Furthermore, people aren't talking about these chapters all at the same time. The "hype" surrounding these chapters is incredibly spread out between people who already read the leaks, people who read the chapter the day it comes out, and people who won't have read the chapter for a little while.
If companies don't see fans talking about the manga and see a drop in viewership because of the fact that the chapter already got leaked online, that hurts the mangaka and they will likely be punished in some way for losing viewership on their manga.
And, as I stated in my original post, there are legitimately people who will misinterpret the leaks and then decide to "boycott" or stop consuming the manga because of something they saw in the leaks that was taken out of context. Again, this is a loss in viewership and some bad press that can get mangakas in trouble.
Finally, there are actually many instances of Horikoshi listening to and interacting with fans of his series as well as taking criticism from them, and not even just from Japanese fans either. Remember when Kyuudai Garaki originally had a different name that--either intentionally or unintentionally--had a very severe context to Korean and Chinese people who had been victims of human experimentation war crimes by Japan? And they criticized that name? And then Horikoshi changed it?
Anyways, leaks are bad, they hurt the manga and anime industry, the industry is DEFINITELY aware that these leaks are circulating and mangakas CAN get in trouble for them, even someone as "popular" as Horikoshi.
Just don't do leaks my guys!
It's baffling to me how many times we have to tell people in this goddamn fandom not to circulate or seek out leaks but as a Present Mic stan I'm even more angry about it after 373 because y'all got all up in arms about a decision that Mic was supposedly making that wasn't even actually on the table at all.
Leaks hurt the industry. If you really care about this series you shouldn't be seeking them out anyways. But do you know one of the biggest reasons WHY leaks hurt the industry? It's because amateur translators will translate leaks in bad faith or misinterpret glimpses of panels and decide they know exactly what is happening in this chapter even without the full picture.
Remember when people said they were going to boycott the manga because everyone was CONVINCED that Mirko had died when the leaks for 346 came out. Leaks pose a genuine threat to the viewership of a series because people willfully misinterpret the bigger picture.
And once again with 373, y'all started talking about how you can't believe Mic would even THINK about killing Oboro and how could he do something like that and you hated him or were mad at him for supposedly making the decision that he was going to kill Oboro when that literally isn't even CLOSE to what happened in the chapter.
Like oh my god can y'all stop making decisions about how you feel about this series based on leaks that 90% of you probably can't even properly translate in the first place and showing your asses for the entire fandom to see when it turns out that you were wrong and nothing even close to what leak sharers said was going to happen actually happened. Like I'm so tired of it lmao.
