60 Days Booze Free

I had a look at my AA app today and realised I am 60 days alcohol free. Ain’t that something? And I thought I should probably commemorate the moment on my blog. So here it goes . . . 

The reality is that I have previously gone nearly 6 months without a drink before. So this isn’t a major milestone. But I do think it’s a sign of how my attitude has changed that I didn’t even notice I hadn’t had a drink for two months. 

This is evident from one of my first blog posts, in which I lament being in on a Saturday night; and contemplate the fact I may be an alcoholic. That was after a sobriety stint of 5 days. So it really is quite exceptional that I’ve come all this way. 

Although i noticed today that you can’t take your sobriety for granted. I am going through a particularly hectic time at work at the moment. I’m working long days, catching up on the weekends; and I still don’t feel like there are enough hours in the day. And leaving work today, at nearly 7pm on a Friday, I thought to myself that in my past life this would be the kind of week that would end with a bottle of wine on my couch. 

It really was a conscience decision on my way home, not to stop off and buy a bottle of wine. I really was very tempted at one stage. But I remembered that, as much as I might enjoy that wine tonight while i listened to some music, all the work would be waiting for me when I woke up tomorrow. And I would then also have to deal with a high workload with a hangover and sleep deprivation. I know I made the right decision to come home and watch a film instead. 

Also, it seems to me like more and more twenty and thirty somethings are choosing to drink less or maybe even give it up all together. My friends all seemed to have slipped in to the stage of life where they prefer getting brunch and coffee to having pints, which is obviously fine by me, 

All in all, the first 60 days haven’t been too bad; and I’m now motivated to see that number of booze free days I’ve had climb higher and higher. I urge anyone thinking of giving up alcohol for a while to just go ahead and do it. It’s not all plain sailing but it is worth it.

60 model challenge | Day 2&3 | IKEA Wardrobe and Concrete Texture

Working on my modelling skills and texturing with these two days. Intent was to texture the wardrobe, though during the process I uncovered an awkward issue with Maya that made editing UV's impossible. This has since been remedied. Moving on, I decided to get some PBR experience under my belt and make a concrete texture. I realise that such practices are probably going to wane after the uptake of software like Substance Painter, Ddo, 3D-Coat et al, however I feel that in order to better understand how the workflow functions is to make a few textures myself.

I celebrated my sobriety birthday yesterday. Another milestone. It's hard to put into words what this journey has been like so I'll just leave you all with this... a passage from the Daily Reflections book for May 18... 

FREEDOM TO BE ME 

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.

"My first true freedom is the freedom not to have to take a drink today. If I truly want it, I will work the Twelve Steps and the happiness of this freedom will come to me through the Steps – sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. 60 model challenge | Day One | Bin

Shoring up my knowledge of modelling by making sixty small assets in sixty days. First up is this Bin. 622 polys, two textures which could be reduced to one, however due to a long-standing issue with Maya and ATI cards, UV Mapping is beyond my capabilities as of right now. Also my first serious foray into PBR workflows.
