W A A H O O I was quite obviously super excited to see my work again in MK Gallery. It's such a beautiful gallery space and the show has been curated so well! I urge you to go and take a look at the exhibition. It's on until 1st November and there's definitely something for everyone in the show. You can vote for your favourite artwork too 😉 If you do go, my work is in the second room, give me a tag if you see it! Take a close look at all the dots too, I hand painted and counted 270,000 dots in total! Sorry we didn't get to chat @fay.blanchard you looked very busy! #mkgallery #mkgallery2020 #artexhibition #lockdownart #artforyourwalls #excited #artcurator #opencall #sitespecificwork #handmadewatercolour #mkartist #londonartist (at MK Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFIIc2VnQUd/?igshid=1ohfeeh5oy935

I once made a work (a work amongst many in my solo show #AnArmALegAndOtherStorires @southlondongallery #SouthLondonGallery) that was a #sitespecificwork that utilises two rooms on the second floor of the institution as sites of production rather than of exhibition. I produced a writing residency as an art work. I was very happy that #MiraMattar and a collaboration between #NatashaSoobramanien and #LukeWilliams agreed to inhabit these spaces as #writers. I requested that develop texts they were already working on, creating a continuum undisrupted by the hosting institution. At the end of the residency, they have been asked to publish an excerpt of their writings and hold a public conversation to discuss their experiences. This remains one of my favourite works I have produced in my life as it involves creating a certain infrastructure for other artists. #HemanChong #WritingRooms (at South London Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEo9A59lk4o/?igshid=xm5we8e6wkxx

Otto Zitko Take a look at the meaning of a line in Otto Zitko’s work and you will see that he uses it very deliberately in a number of different ways. Sometimes Zitko opens up an illusory space where the drawing develops, other times his line networks focus on the architectural structure of the real space. Or, site specific artwork, if you will. In his all-over space drawings the line takes over. It defines the spatial structure and dimension of the site it occupies. When looking at Zitko’s serial works on aluminium or paper one finds other approaches. The line refers to issues beyond the drawing. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #austrian #vienna #abstractexpressionism #sitespecificworks #scribbles #tonal #singularcolour #knottedlines #artist #ottozitko https://www.instagram.com/p/CIxiaAnF-S3/?igshid=453quw7wmsqa

Site specific art works at art fairs. Can they be successful?
I visited at least 5 of the 8-or-so art fairs that were inNew York in early March. As always, I am in search of great site-specific art,as well as installation work.  It is tough when you walk up and down the aisles of similarly-sized square and rectangular booths to find truly innovative examples of site-specific work. My favorite three were Jessica Stockholder in (or should I say above) Kavi Gupta’s booth at the Armory; Rachel Mica Weiss’ piece in the lobby of Pulse;  and Diana Kingsley in a room of Spring Break Art Fair that was curated by Chris Bors. Successful installations that take up an entire booth (or room) are more prevalent, a little easier to do at an art fair and really pack a punch in the midst of all the other cubes selling various pieces. My favorites were Simon Schubert for Foley Gallery at Volta, Brandon Ballengee in Ronald Feldman’s booth at The Armory, Franklin Evans in Steven Zevitas’ booth at Volta, and Visual Pilots’ Luminessenz at Spring Break in the room curated by A. Moret.  Then there are the works that just do a fantastic job of occupying a space or wall. Adam Parker Smith at Spring Break in the room curated by Erin Goldberger and RJ Supa; Brent Birnbaum at Elizabeth Denny also at Spring Break and Mike Cloud in Thomas Erben’s booth at The Independent are a few great examples.

Brandon Ballengee at The Armory
Ron Feldman’s booth was dedicated to Ballengee’s series Frameworks of Absence (and a selection of his other works). The booth took the form of small museum depicting the disappearance of animals in the Americas over the past four centuries. As response to the current mass extinction event, referred to as the Holocene or Sixth Great Extinction, Ballengee physically cut images of missing animals from actual historic prints and publications printed at the time in history when the depicted species became extinct. The resulting image minus the subject is what he refers to as a Framework of Absence.

Visual Pilots at Spring Break
Working with Visualpilots, a collective based in London and Switzerland founded by Christoph Thüer and Simon Haenggi, A. Moret presented Luminessenz: Space is Only Noise inspired by a song of the same title by artist Nicolas Jaar.  Transforming a ubiquitous room using a projector, a single PA system and systematically arranged strips of suspended heavy duty cloth, Visualpilots created an environment where time and space are suspended and the visual and auditory experience were distilled and shared.

One Big Installation:
The whole vibe at Spring Break was one of an installation and performance. The fair itself was one site specific project located at Moynihan Station above the Post Office at 34th. It was formerly located in an Old school House near Spring Street. I don’t think I have missed one of their iterations.

Otto Zitko Consuming massive spaces with his all-encompassing approach to the creative process, Austrian artist Otto Zitko saturates his surfaces with rich and seemingly endless eddies of colour that dazzle the eye and convey immense emotion. Pulling from the vast past of Abstract Expressionism, Zitko updates this tradition with his frequent emphasis on singular colours. Using a solitary shade as the foundation Zitko builds a rhythm across his work that is undeniable. His scintillating scribbles span his canvas. Born in Linz, Austria in 1959, Zitko attended the ‘University of Applied Arts’ in Vienna between 1977 and 1982. He was thrust into the spotlight in 1996 with his receipt of the ‘Msgr. Otto Mauer Award’ and again in 2004 when he garnered the ‘City of Vienna Award for Fine Arts’. Today, Zitko is based in Vienna and continues to showcase his work. Recent solo exhibitions include those at the ‘Galeria Heinrich Ehrhardt’, Madrid (2015); the ‘Galerie Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman’, Vienna (2017); and the ‘LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz’ in Linz (2019). #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #austrian #vienna #abstractexpressionism #sitespecificworks #scribbles #tonal #singularcolour #knottedlines #artist #ottozitko https://www.instagram.com/p/CIxiU75Fi-c/?igshid=mx91y79zw7wl

Otto Zitko Austrian artist Otto Zitko was born in 1959 in Linz. He now lives and works in Vienna. Zitko is known for his huge, scrawled wall drawings. His numerous works include a series of sensual stone lithographs covered with his nervous, methodically drawn, knotted lines. There is a freshness and lusciousness to Zitko’s works. Although they are made using only one or two colours they allow a tremendous tonal range. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #austrian #vienna #abstractexpressionism #sitespecificworks #scribbles #tonal #singularcolour #knottedlines #artist #ottozitko https://www.instagram.com/p/CIxiNnelk8S/?igshid=xdju6xcmwnxk
