Weird one tonight.
Great show. AMAZING CAST. Not sure the show benefits anything from the entire second act! It barely moves the story forward. Go straight from the Act One Finale to Mother Superior song. Sister Mary Roberts song and the three crooks song. Add the farce of the convent breakin and straight to the Finale.
That said. I did tear up when Dolores came out in her finale outfit.
And “things are that bad, get down off the cross, we need the wood” could be favourite line in a musical.

After it being pushed twice over the last few years because of you know what, yesterday I FINALLY got to see the Sister Act Musical! Now originally, ngl I was going to see it specifically because Whoopi Goldbery was reprising her role as Sister Mary Clarence but because of it being pushed twice, she couldn't do it anymore so that made me sad at first but I was just happy to get to see it now, it also meant I got to see the talent of other actors especially west end ones, @ferrifrump and @realkealasettle did great as Mother Superior and Sister Mary Patrick, the rest of the cast were amazing too and the soundtrack of it was great! I did have one issue with the show, I really didn't like the way they made the cop the love interest because I'm a huge fan of the film (ngl I prefer the film over the musical) and in the film, after her mob boss ex boyfriend was thrown in jail, they didn't make her get with anyone which I preferred because it proved she didn't need a man so yeah but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it! 😁 ✝️ ✝️ ✝️ #sisteract #sisteractthemusical #sisteractmusical #sisteractmovie #sistermaryclarence #delorisvancartier #sistermarypatrick #sistermaryrobert #mothersuperior #jennifersaunders #kealasettle #whoopigoldberg #eventimapollo #musical #musicals #theatrekid #theatrenerd #theatregoer #musicaltheatre #musicaltheatrefan #musicaltheatrenerd #musicaltheater #theatrefan #theatre (at Eventim Apollo) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChkWT-6jr9W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Sister Act" show #677
The thing with Sister Act, as a musical, is that even when strong performances, choreography, and direction are present, they only expose the weaknesses of the book and lyrics. Berkeley Playhouse’s jovial production showcased several stellar performances, but never quite reached an overarching level of musical legitimacy needed to fully entertain an audience. Lexie Lazear’s direction gave room for the actors to capitalize on the few strengths the script and score have to offer, and astutely skated over the more groan-worthy aspects. In all, this Sister Act was a hallelujah of a production in spite of the flawed material.
Elizabeth Jones delivered a fine performance as lead sister, Deloris Van Cartier. A very capable singer, Miss Jones did a lovely job in “Take Me to Heaven,” “Fabulous Baby,” and lamented a wonderful “Sister Act” in Act Two. However, where Miss Jones fell short was in her absence of pathos and lack of charisma, which was replaced by, what seemed like, impulsive line delivery. The role is burdened with a string of solo turns and jokes, the latter falling short as she set up the joke and “told” the punch line before delivering it. However, it was in Miss Jones’ excellent leadership of the Act One showstopper, “Raise Your Voice” where all the elements of her talents came together in fabulous fashion. Heather Orth donned the Mother Superior habit, and did so with comedic panache and stunningly impressive vocal chops. “Here Within These Walls” and “I Haven’t Got A Prayer” are heartfelt laments with several clever turns of phrase, all of which were delivered with expert timing and inflection by Miss Orth. She consistently found the right balance of honoring the hymn-like soliloquies with the amount of sarcastic undertone the role exudes towards Deloris.
On the male side of the church, Dave J. Abrams’ performances as Eddie Souther, the nervous cop charged with Deloris’ well-being, was nothing short of amazing. Being labeled “Sweaty Eddie,” based on his dramatic sweatiness when nervous, the character has a chance to show the moxie and swagger buried within the uniform and deodorant; that moment being the Act One breakout number, “I Could Be That Guy.” Preceded by a charming turn in the scene work opposite Miss Jones, Mr. Abrams flashed what was certainly the absolute best vocal performance in the show- dancing, riffing, and simply dominating the one true song he had to shine in. Mr. Abrams delivered Eddie’s clumsy physical comedy formidably, pairing well with the earnest love he showed towards Miss Jones’ Deloris. Anthone Jackson was a strong Curtis Jackson, the villain of the musical. Mr. Jackson’s brooding baritone voice was well-toned for the Act One abusively funny “When I Find My Baby.” Mr. Jackson’s intimidating presence as the murderous Curtis played both for laughs and intensity, all proper reactions to a very solid performance. Playing Curtis’ cronies were a hilarious trio in Chris Plank as Joey, Marcel Saunders as TJ, and Jesse Cortez as Pablo. The three of these fine gentlemen provided some decently tuned backup vocals and moves for Mr. Jackson’s “When I Find My Baby” but succeeded majestically in Act Two’s ultra-hot, “Lady in the Long Black Dress.” The falsettos, 70’s style allure, and complete commitment to the funny is what made these three guys worthy of every hoot and holler they receive.
Elizabeth Curtis dominated the stage as newly appointed postulant, Sister Mary Robert. Her coy demeanor juxtaposed nicely when she began spreading her wings and strengthening her backbone, resulting in a stirringly awesome “The Life I Never Led,” which let the audience relish in her heavenly belt. Like Miss Orth and Mr. Abrams, Miss Curtis also found every moment of hilarity and delivered it with finesse and precise timing. Featured nun highlights came from Sheila Townsend and Jeanine Perasso-Kaczmarcyzk as Sister Mary Patrick and Sister Mary Lazarus, respectively. Both women nailed every ounce of comedy and energy in “It’s Good to be a Nun,” “Raise Your Voice,” and “Take Me to Heaven.” Brian Watson delivered a standout performance as a very charming and loveable Monsignor O’Hara.
Inherently, a group of dancing nuns is funny, no matter which way you swing it. However, it takes a skilled choreographer to enhance the hilarity by making them move very well without going overboard into “too legit” dance turns. Allison Paraiso delivered this compromise with splendor and non-stop enjoyment, as her choreography was perfectly calibrated and just flashy enough to match the comedic integrity Miss Lazear’s direction had set up. “Raise Your Voice,” “Sunday Morning Fever,” and the spectacular “Spread the Love Around” incorporated impressive formations with moves that made sense for the show and the characters; audiences even got to enjoy a joyous boogie turn from Neal Pascua as a dancing Pope! Even the, usually, cringe-worthy Chase scene between the Nuns and the Cronies was a show highlight in this production, with hilariously captivating staging and bits throughout the scene. I can’t stress enough that even though the script and score itself may offer little to be desired, if you have the right people in place to create crafty staging, most excellent choreography, and sterling performances from some pretty talented actors, you can’t help but be impressed. Thankfully, the staff and cast at Berkeley Playhouse found all the funny they could, making this a heavenly production. Sister Act has closed, but that little orphan Annie is up next for them, opening November 10th and playing through December 23rd. Go see a show!

"Sister Act" show #656
Tumblr media
“It’s gonna be fabulous, baby!” This ongoing mantra of Deloris Van Cartier is one of the driving forces that make Sister Act a potentially fun musical to see. Though Cheri and Bill Steinkellner’s book has some weaknesses in its fluidity, Alan Menken’s exciting music compliments Glenn Slater’s quite clever lyrics, making the musical an easily digestible adaption of the iconic film. Camille Gaston leads the Good Company Players production as Deloris, and for good reason: her energy, dynamite power as vocalist and comic timing marry the mantra to her many strengths as a leading actress; she truly is fabulous, baby! Coupled with Laurie Pessano’s crafty direction, this relatively tepid musical finds moments of dazzling heights.

After witnessing her beau committing murder, Deloris takes refuge at a convent, disguised as a nun. Mother Superior, who is in charge of the nuns in the convent, clashes with Deloris’ secular ways while trying to live up to her own vows and faith-based calling in the church. Comedy, songs, some romance, and plenty of nun puns make up this story of two women who learn where faith can truly take you and end up seeing eye-to-eye on human relationships. As mentioned, Miss Gaston is the perfect choice to fulfill the audience’s memory of Whoopi Goldberg’s emphatic performance in the films. “Take Me to Heaven” and “Fabulous, Baby!” kick off her performance well, and when she finally gets to break out in a heavenly leadership of “Raise Your Voice,” Miss Gaston gets to truly display the musical gifts she has to offer. Along the way, Deloris is written to have some downright funny insults and one-liners, all of which Miss Gaston delivers with ease, consistency, and nuance. Cori Randolph dons the habit as leading nun, Mother Superior. Her vocals in “Here Within These Walls” and “I Haven’t Got a Prayer” are welcomed attributes in these more timid solo moments, but it’s the comedic inflection which grants Miss Randolph free passage to an enlightening turn in this complicated role. The question “How do you solve a problem like Superior?” is not easily answered, as she is written to be likeable but still remain anti-Deloris for so long, creating an imbalance of funny, poised, and strict. Well, Miss Pessano’s placement and direction of Miss Randolph and the clear chemistry she and Miss Gaston share when in the convent, especially at the end of show, makes Miss Randolph a standout performer.

(Dorie Sanders (Mary Robert) flanked by the Nuns; Photo credit: Good Company Players)
Dorie Sanders delivers a wonderful performance as newly-integrated postulant, Mary Robert. Her breakout moment in “Raise Your Voice” gets a bit overshadowed among the nun chorus vocals, but she is without a doubt a standout turn in her in Act Two solo, “The Life I Never Led.” Miss Sanders’ coy, shy demeanor never weakens her performance, which is a possibility in such a “church mousy”-type role. Rather, Miss Sanders capitalizes on the vocal moments in solo or company numbers, as well as in the well-staged Bar scene early in Act One to show how Mary Robert truly does want to bust out of her shell and experience life to the fullest. Julie Andrews and Ethel Birrell deliver memorable moments as Sisters Mary Lazarus and Mary Patrick, respectively, by finding moments in “It’s Good to be a Nun” and “Raise Your Voice” to give the little details of characterization they have to offer the Nun chorus.
Tumblr media
(Lex Martin (Eddie), flanked by the Ensemble; Photo credit: Good Company Players)
Representing the guys well are Lex Martin and Jesse McCoy, playing “sweaty” Eddie the cop and murderous boyfriend, Curtis, respectively. Mr. Martin truly has one moment to shine musically and that is in “I Could Be That Guy.” The number requires an otherwise timid, spineless Eddie to literally tear away from his shell and deliver a soulful plea that he could be “that guy” for Deloris. In what is perhaps the best-staged number of this production, Mr. Martin delivers his solo with the twinkle, hope, and nerdy boogie moves that truly make the audience want him to win Deloris’ affections. Mr. McCoy does a stellar job singing about all the ways he’s going to injure the unsuspecting Deloris in a hilarious “When I Find My Baby,” backed up well by his three unintimidating goofball gang members, TJ (played by Liam Olson), Joey (played by Christopher Hoffman), and Pablo (played by Nicholas Nunez).  Mr. Olson, Mr. Hoffman, and Mr. Nunez also have their musical moment to shine in, the so cleverly written and lively attempt at Nun Flirting 101, “Lady in the Long Black Dress.” Even with the trimmed solos, the number hits its mark with the three of these singer-actors delivering excellent personalized touches to how they would pursue the heart of a celibate nun.  Charles Raab makes for a whimsical Monsignor O’Hara, adding dashes of silly outbursts of enthusiasm once the convent starts making some serious money thanks to Deloris’ choir performances with the nuns.

David Pierce’s set design is nicely constructed, containing several beautiful stained-glass windows most would find in a church. The Bar and Eddie’s police station are detailed just enough to effectively contextualize without becoming visually distracting. Evan Commins’ lighting design does most of the heavy work in the transitions and dance numbers, and is marvelous at maintaining the focus in the “Fabulous, Baby! (reprise)” fantasy sequence, keeping Miss Pessano’s clever, intertwining staging of the Fantasy Dancers, Miss Gaston, and the Nun chorus illuminated and vibrant. Sister Act will keep on preachin’ and singin’ through September 10th, so head over to Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater for some well-done theatrical communion.
