INSPIRATIONS My Catholic background plays a large part of the iconography I use in my work. Often times my politics and religious background clash. The subject of Abortion is one where it not only clashes it crashes. Here is a list in no particular order of my inspirations on the imagery.

Apple is commonly known as the fruit Adam and Eve ate to become conscious. I chose to include Apples as a sign for knowledge in much of my work. It’s also one of the many fruits my father picked as a migrant farm-worker. Fruit of the womb and Fruit of our Labor.

Pineapple, a symbol I interpreted while visiting The Black Madonna crested on Montserrat in Spain. She is an international pilgrimage for Catholics. High on the mountain she holds the precious baby Jesus in one hand and in the other an orb. At her feet are 2 pine-cone shapes. I’ve culturally appropriated these into indigenous Mexican Pineapples. This too is a symbol for knowledge.

Roses along with the fruit, roses symbolize abundance, fertility, growth. Thorns illustrate sharpness, hurt, and security measures we have to put up to protect ourselves. Although one can create life, we’re not validated by doing it. Women are not objects for pedestals. We can’t love this image of The Virgin and then deny her the right to own herself. Eyes in the roses look to her for wisdom. Stigmata’s absolves her from any sin we try to put on women.

La Rosa is wearing a Armored Nun Habit because on top of defending our right to Sex, we also have to defend our chastity.
