Why would someone practice Lean Thinking and not Six Sigma?
Lean Thinking and Six Sigma are both approaches to process improvement, but they have different focuses and goals. Lean Thinking, also known as Lean Management, is a method of improving efficiency and reducing waste in a process or organization by identifying and eliminating non-value-adding activities. It emphasizes the continuous flow of work, reducing inventory, and empowering employees to identify and solve problems. On the other hand, Six Sigma is a data-driven approach to process improvement that focuses on reducing defects and variability in a process. It emphasizes the use of statistical tools and techniques to identify and eliminate the root causes of problems.
It’s also possible that some companies may adopt both methodologies, as they can complement each other. Lean thinking can help identify areas for improvement, while Six Sigma can provide the tools and techniques for implementing and measuring those improvements. Another key difference between Lean thinking and Six Sigma is their scope. Lean thinking is typically applied to entire value streams or processes, while Six Sigma is applied to specific, individual processes within a value stream. This means that Lean Thinking is more focused on understanding the big picture and how different processes interact, while Six Sigma is more focused on understanding and improving specific processes in detail.
Lean thinking also tends to be more focused on the customer and their needs, while Six Sigma is more focused on the internal processes of an organization. This means that lean thinking is more likely to lead to changes that directly improve the customer experience, while Six Sigma is more likely to lead to changes that improve efficiency or reduce defects.
Another difference is the culture and mindset, Lean Thinking is more focused on continuous improvement and empowering employees, while Six Sigma is more focused on following a defined methodology and achieving specific goals. Six Sigma tends to be more hierarchical in nature, with a strong emphasis on training and certifying individuals at different levels. Lean thinking, on the other hand, is more focused on creating a culture of continuous improvement, with all employees being encouraged to identify and solve problems.
In summary, Lean Thinking and Six Sigma are both valuable approaches to process improvement, but they have different focuses, goals, and scopes. Depending on the specific needs and goals of an organization, one approach may be more appropriate than the other. Some companies may also adopt both methodologies and combine the strength of both to achieve better results.

The gold standard Six Sigma team
Tumblr media
The team composition and the structure for reporting A typical Six Sigma Team comprises 7 kinds of personnel and a 3-tier structure to go with it. The particulars of the team are as under: - Six Sigma Team – Layer 1: The Project Champion and The Process Owner - Six Sigma Team – Layer 2: The Project Lead, The Finance Certifier, and The Project Coach - Six Sigma Team – Layer 3: The Project Team Members, Special Knowledge Team (invoked if required) The Six Sigma team’s internal communication is extremely informal. The reason for this is that all projects have assorted necessities and no matter how hard one tries, the work cannot be generalized. But just before the commencement of the project, clear roles and responsibilities are allocated to each person on the team. It is the norm for all team members to be watchful, alert, and excited about any new needs that may come up when the project is being executed. What team member is required at what stage The matrix given below explains the many stages of a typical Six Sigma project. Also given in the table are the personnel who are required at different phases of the project. I will dive deep into the roles and responsibilities of each of these people later in my blogs but give you a basic understanding of the 7 roles later in this blog.
Tumblr media
The 7 roles in a Six Sigma team As we understand Six Sigma is a thorough and orderly procedure for refining processes in many aspects of business management. This is done by enhancing leadership skills, saving precious time, and encouraging cost efficiency for the managerial cadre. Reduction of errors and deficiencies is a major Six Sigma objective. Performance should be increased and the variations occurring in processes should be decreased. This way, mistakes are overcome. The results in organizations reaping bigger profits. They also raise the bar on the quality of their services. When everything is going to plan, employee morale is always high. Read on to learn more about the seven key roles of Six Sigma. 1. Executive These are the senior-most leaders within the Six Sigma team. They have the most training and the most experience. They are established leaders who put in place the strategies to execute the Six Sigma program and that too, entirely to the satisfaction of the organization. The executives are also internal ambassadors for the organization’s culture and goals. Executives are supposed to add value and ensure the success of the program. 2. Champion This is a middle executive level. Champions work in tandem with the executives. It is their responsibility to know and understand the details and habits of a company. These are the VMV, commonly known as the vision, the mission, and the values along with the metrics. This information is used to come up with a bespoke Six Sigma plan, in line with the business goals. Champions remove impediments that can cause delays or a hindrance to the success of the project. 3. Master Black Belt These are the true practitioners of the Si Sigma methodology, practices, and resources. Master Black Belts coach and train future Black Belts. They are very well-versed in solving problems, providing leadership, doing resource management, and deployment of the project. They work closely with the Six Sigma leaders. This is done to ensure that the initiatives of the company do not derail. Master Black Belts are also able to train and certify other people in Six Sigma methods. 4. Black Belt These are full-time professionals. Their main responsibility is to be team leaders for Six Sigma projects. These Black Belts have the potential to save businesses an estimated $230,000 for each project they lead. They have the capacity to execute and complete four to six projects a year. Black Belts are connected with the minutest of details concerned with the project. They are well-versed in the main principles of Six Sigma. They are trained in project models DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) and DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify). Their know-how about lean enterprises is pretty adequate. 5. Green Belt They are part-time professionals. They assist the Black Belts with projects. Sometimes they also lead small projects. They know problem-solving techniques and the DMAIC project model. In Black Belt projects, they gather data, execute trials, and analyze information. They spend less time than Black Belts do. They usually require assistance from the Black Belts whenever they fall short on anything. 6. Yellow Belt These people understand the basic metrics and enhancement methods of Six Sigma. They know how to infuse these into the production system of the business. They are core team members. Yellow Belts are usually subject matter experts. They also have the duty of running smaller enhancement projects. They are exponents of the PDCA cycle. PDCA stands for Plan-Do-Check-Append. These Yellow Belts identify those processes that need upgrading. Yellow Belts are usually called in to help Green & Black Belts on projects. 7. White Belt This is the novice level. The White Belt has basic information about the Six Sigma program. They work locally to fix problems and provide support. White Belts may not be members of the Six Sigma team. These are the people who get a taste of the foundation of Six Sigma. Then they are expected to decide if they wish to continue or leave the Six Sigma process. Read the full article

The 8 Wastes are eight types of process obstacles that get in the way of providing value to the customer. To remember the 8 Wastes, you can use the acronym, “DOWNTIME.
DEFECTS:- Efforts are caused by rework, scrap, and incorrect information. This example of a Defect shows that the cup has spilled due to a loose-fitting lid. OVERPRODUCTION:- Production that is more than needed or before it is needed. This example of Overproduction shows that more coffee is being brewed than is actually needed. WAITING:- Wasted time waiting for the next step in a process. This example of Waiting shows customers having to wait because the cashier is busy doing something else. NON-UTILIZED TALENT:- Underutilizing people’s talents, skills & knowledge. This example of Non-Utilized. Talent shows two workers hanging out instead of taking orders or making drinks. TRANSPORTATION:- Unnecessary movements of products & materials. This example of Transportation shows a delivery person dropping off supplies at the coffee station instead of directly to the supply room. The supplies will have to be moved multiple times. INVENTORY:- Excess products and materials are not being processed. This example of The inventory shows excess supplies stored in this area with overflowing coffee beans and overstocked cups. MOTION:- Unnecessary movements by people (e.g., walking). This example of Motion shows a barista having to walk to the opposite side of the coffee station to retrieve supplies. EXTRA PROCESSING:- More work or higher quality than is required by the customer. This example of Extra Processing shows a barista over-decorating the customer’s name on the side of the cup instead of using simple writing.

The goal of Scrum is to deliver a working product as soon as possible and to continuously improve upon it based on customer feedback.
Lean Six Sigma, on the other hand, is a combination of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. It focuses on reducing waste and improving efficiency in processes. Lean Six Sigma uses statistical analysis and data-driven decision making to identify and eliminate sources of waste, defects, and variability in processes. The goal of Lean Six Sigma is to create a process that is consistent, efficient, and predictable.
Both Scrum and Lean Six Sigma have their own strengths and weaknesses, and the better approach depends on the specific needs of the project or organization.
For projects that require flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing requirements, Scrum may be the better choice. However, if the goal is to improve the efficiency and quality of a specific process, Lean Six Sigma may be more appropriate.
Ultimately, the choice between Scrum and Lean Six Sigma will depend on the organization's goals and the specific needs of the project. It may also be possible to use elements of both methodologies to achieve the desired outcome.
