Man's Bag, first quarter of the 19th century, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Art of Africa and the Americas
pouchlike bag with flap closure; elaborate floral medallion and organic embroidered designs on interior of flap and bag body, with one floral medallion on exterior; 2 stamped designs on front flap; 2 metal rings on strap Professional male embroiderers living in northern Morocco's Riff Mountains produced leather objects that were used throughout the country. The elaborate embroidery done on leather for men's accessories such as this bag has a long tradition in the country and has been much appreciated by foreign visitors. Delacroix and other European artists working in northern Morocco during the 19th century often included depictions of embroidered leather and other highly decorative fabrics in their paintings. This bag would have been used by men living in a non-urban environment and would have accorded the owner a certain amount of prestige within his community. On festive occasions it would have been worn by a horseman whose mount would also have had an elaborately embroidered halter and saddle. This bag was acquired in the Siroua Mountains in southern Morocco in the 1990's. Size: 16 1/2 x 6 3/16in. (41.9 x 15.7cm) (overall) 27 in. (68.6 cm) (single element, shoulder strap) Medium: Leather, silk, metal; embroidered

Learning About the Moroccan Rug Carpet
Nothing could accent a high-end luxury home also as vintage Rug carpets. The history of those vintage rugs dates back to 622 AD. At that point Berber women were taught their familial patterns, looping techniques, and color ranges from the time they were just small girls watching their mothers, and grandmothers weave the intricately designed carpets that might be used for domestic purposes like bedding.
Some of the traditional Moroccan rugs were made by professional master weavers from Eastern tribes that got as prized gifts to elite families. The collective name of all the Berber tribes is Beni Ourain and their Berber rugs adorned palaces and lots of sacred spaces. a number of these rugs were made smaller, in order that they might be carried as prayer mats.
The Moroccan Berber carpets were crafted by hand from sheared wool. The sheep within the Atlas Mountains were sheared then the wool was thoroughly cleaned and combed so it might be spun. a number of the sheared wool would be dyed and a few of it might be left within the natural colors.
Besides the sheared wool of the Atlas wild sheep , some rugs would be crafted from camel hair. There was a superstition at the time that if the rugs edges weren't burned slightly, then evil spirits would be interested in the carpets. Many master weavers still burn the sides slightly to stop the bad spirits from being envious of the rugs beauty.
You can partially judge where the vintage rugs from Morocco were made by their loops. Rugs with large loops and looser knots were likely to possess been woven within the mountainous regions because this design allowed them to guard people from the cold temperatures.
Rugs that had finer weaves were usually meant to sleep on top of rather than to stay you warm. The Southern Berber tribes just like the ones within the Jebel Siroua region of Morocco has always been considered to possess the foremost sophisticated weaves. Moroccan rugs and carpets from this region are made with different flat weaves and textile mixes to make unique designs, patterns, and textures.
You will find several patterns and styles utilized in the Berber vintage rugs. The patterns range from bold geometrical designs like Islamic artwork to designs that are almost monochrome in appearance.
There are weavers who create designs that depict crosses, lozenges, triangles and straightforward shapes like diamonds. the normal rug colors start in white, brown and black reminder Mary wool.
Saffron would be wont to create yellow colors and henna would be wont to create red colors. Blue was created from indigo and green was gotten from wild mint, while burgundy was derived from pomegranate.
The Berber people believe the positive energy of Baraka to keep off evil energies or spirits. When a vintage Berber carpet was crafted, it often has symbols woven into it to infuse protective powers within the carpet.
Fertility symbols were often utilized in rugs being given to newly married couples so their home could be blessed many children. These vintage Berber rugs for today’s homes reflect the beliefs of the folks that made them. The hopes, dreams, wishes, fears, and expectations of the lads and ladies who crafted these things were woven into the threads as they worked.
