Title: If Only She Knew
Pairing: Sirius Black/MuggleOFC
Rating: R (language, eventual smut)
Summary: When Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban, he had only one mission - get to Peter Pettigrew before Pettigrew could get to Harry. But with a little over a month left before the start of term, he decides to go and visit his godson first. After getting a brief glimpse of the Boy Who Lived, Padfoot, hungry and exhausted, loses consciousness, and wakes up in the home of an American muggle woman. His mission hasn't changed, he just didn't expect to fall in love.
Warnings: none that I know of as of yet. Just language for now.
Notes: I'm posting this as I go, so I'm not sure about any addition warnings as of yet. I'll make sure to make a note of them as they come up. Also, I think this may end up being canon compliant, but I'm not 100% on that so for now, I'll assume it's going to be canon divergent.
Chapter One: The Journey to Near Death
Padfoot was certain he would die even before reaching the South-end shores. After the first six hours, he could barely feel his legs anymore, the water so cold that it pierced his body like a thousand knives. He was just barely able to keep his head above water when his body spontaneously began to warm itself. He didn’t spend much time thinking about how that could be — he had no wand — all he knew was that it was what allowed him to keep swimming. Twenty hours in, however, he began to feel the exhaustion, the urge to stop moving and allow himself to sink, tempting him beyond reason. But despite the burning ache in his legs, the heaviness of his body in the cold North sea, Padfoot refused to stop paddling. He began repeating the name Peter Pettigrew again and again in his mind just to keep himself from giving in, and when he saw land in the distance, a fresh surge of energy reignited his strength.
Finally, after what seemed like a thousand years, his paws scraped along the bottom. His paws dug in to take himself just a bit further until his legs gave out from under him, and he collapsed on the shoreline, the chilled water rushing beneath him and reaching his lips. He tried to stand, but it was no use. He had used up any ounce of energy he could hope to conjure. For a moment, he lay there, looking up at the sky. In twelve years he hadn’t seen the night sky. His star wasn’t in his line of sight, but directly above where he lay, twinkling at him as though proud of his strong swim, was Regulus and far from it, Alphard. He would’ve laughed if not for how exhausted he was.
His legs were like throbbing weights as he army crawled further up on the beach, resting for a few moments halfway before he tentatively stood, his legs like jello beneath him as he slowly walked toward the stilt houses just beyond the shoreline. He could rest better if he had some cover from the bitter winds, but only long enough to be able to get his strength up and keep moving. He couldn’t risk sleeping so close to Azkaban. What he needed most of all was a drink of water, but that didn’t seem like a possibility any time soon.
He tried to shake the sea off himself when he was hidden away beneath the house, but he’d barely had the strength to make it as far as he had. Trembling from the cold, he curled himself into as tight a ball as he could manage and let his eyes fall shut.
He couldn't be sure how long it had been when he woke, still wet, freezing and thirsty. He hadn’t stopped shaking, even in his sleep, and he used what little energy he managed to gain to shake himself violently, getting as much excess water off of him as possible and hoping the rapid movement would warm him enough that he could start moving again and find somewhere dry, preferably warm as well, though he wasn’t getting his hopes up. Coming up to the cement wall behind the stilted homes, he followed it further South until he reached the street behind it.
Where was he?
He looked up at the first street sign he found. Marine Parade and Pleasant Road.
There was a restaurant across the street to the left that was bound to have something edible in the dumpster. Looking both ways, he made his way across the road as quickly as he could and went around to the back of the building. Nosing the front sliding door of the dumpster open, he began to sniff its contents, hoping for some protein but willing to take anything at all. If he had any hope to make it to Hogwarts, he would need to fill his stomach with something and find some water.
He nearly leapt with joy when he sniffed out a half-eaten salmon sandwich, and pulled the scraps out of the dump, scarfing it down in nearly a single bite. Finding water would be a bit trickier unless the darkened clouds above him managed to produce some rain. Then he would just need to find a pothole and wait for it to fill up enough to quench his thirst. The water would be filthy, but it was better than nothing.
A roll of thunder sounded in the distance behind him, the wind blowing away the sandwich wrapper he had eaten out of. Walking further down the street, he came up to the bus stop at the corner and looked up at the map. It would take him at least a day to get to Scotland on foot, and the children wouldn’t be arriving at Hogwarts for at least another four weeks.
It would be nice to see Harry before then. He must be so big by now. Where did Lily’s sister and her wretched husband live again?
Surrey?
Yes, that was right. They lived on Privet Drive somewhere.
Looking back up at the map, he realized it would take him just as long to get to Surrey as it would to get to Scotland, but at least he could take the muggle train from Kings Cross.
His mind made up, he began his journey toward Surrey, keeping his eyes open for any source of water. The muscles in his legs still ached with each step, but he was determined to get as far away from Azkaban as he could get. Even when it began to rain, he kept moving toward Surrey, trying to formulate a long term plan until the start of term. He could live in the nearest park for the next several weeks, at least then he could remain close to Harry, even if he couldn’t talk to him. Living in the wilderness didn’t exactly sound enticing, but it was certainly better than withstanding the Dementors. And perhaps in the meantime, he could work on perfecting his wandless magic.
He managed to find a puddle that wasn’t too dirty near Pipps Hill and drank his fill before continuing his journey West. It wasn’t until he began to shiver so badly that it slowed his pace significantly that he found a porch to get out of the rain. Shaking the water off of himself, he ignored the pang of hunger in his stomach as he laid down and rested. Without visibility of the sun, it was difficult to tell what time it was or how long he had been traveling, but if he were to venture a guess, he would estimate he had been walking about five hours or so. He was still quite a way from Privet Drive — at least another twenty hours. The thought alone made the ache in his muscles twinge.
Maybe he would get lucky and find a muggle with a truck that he could hitch a ride from unnoticed.
“Oi! What do you think you’re doing?!” came a voice behind him as the front door opened, and an older man came outside, shooing him away with a dramatic wave of his hand. “Go on then! Bugger off, you filthy mutt!”
With a whine, Padfoot scurried off the porch, narrowly avoiding the old man’s foot as it swung in his direction. At least the rain had let up a bit.
This time when he set off, he didn’t stop except to find water. He took the A127, got off on Cecil and took the Squirrels Heath Lane. By the time the rain had completely stopped, he was at Romford Rail on Eastern. The sun was nearly gone, the temperature dropping with it, making him shiver on unsteady feet. He looked up at the sign at a corner of the road he was on. The A125 was just up the street off Exchange. He could walk just a bit further and find some food before he kept going. Part of him wanted to stop and rest for the night, but he knew there was no way he would be able to sleep. Not yet. Not until he saw Harry. There was a petrol station just down the way from the corner of Exchange; hopefully they hadn’t yet emptied their bins.
Despite how amazing it felt to be among people again, he was wary of getting too close to anyone. The last thing he needed was a muggle thinking he would make a lovely pet indeed and trying to take him home with them. Or worse, attract the attention of one of the muggle Dog Wardens. The sooner he could get to Harry and see that he was alright, the sooner he could begin to make long term plans for finding Wormtail.
The bin behind the petrol station had so many scraps in it that it was almost like a welcoming feast, only the food wasn’t quite as hot, nor as delicious. But it was better than starving. His head in the rubbish, he nosed through the wrappers and began to eat whatever he could reach. He was enjoying a half-eaten sausage roll when the door around the front of the station opened, and Padfoot — not wanting to risk being seen — abandoned the half-eaten roll, running toward London Rd. He would be on this road for a while, and just as he prepared for a long night on foot, a crimson truck with an open bed turned on to London. If he could just catch up with it, he could jump in the bed and cut his time in half. He just hoped they were going the same way he was trying to go.
His muscles protested in agony as he broke into a run, throbbing and threatening to give out, but he pressed on, ignoring the swell of pain. He was so close, but his jump needed to be precise to get up onto the moving vehicle. With one last push, he leaped as high as he could, and landed with all but his back legs in the truck bed. Scrambling onto it, he moved all the way toward the back and collapsed. Hopefully the driver was none the wiser.
Padfoot wasn’t entirely sure how long he had been asleep, nor had he even been aware of having fallen asleep in the first place. He’d been jolted awake when the truck must’ve gone over a pothole, and peeked out to the nearest street signs. They were moving slower now, and appeared to be on a residential street — Berwick, according to the sign they’d just passed. They were in London.
Waiting until the truck stopped at a red light, he jumped down from the bed and ran. The sun was already out, and with a quick glance at his position, he realized it was half-past ten. If he didn’t stop, he would reach Surrey by nightfall.
Privet Drive looked about as picturesque as he could’ve imagined; cookie cutter houses with perfectly mowed lawns and bright bunches of flowers in all the right places. Even in the dark, he could understand why someone would want to live there. As he approached number four, he could swear he heard shouting, and stayed across the street for the time being, waiting to see if Harry needed help. But from the sounds of it, it might be the muggles that would need help. Harry was screaming at the top of his lungs, demanding that whoever he shouted at stop talking about his parents. Not a moment later, a balloon of a woman came floating out of the back door, into the garden, where she soared high into the sky.
A few minutes later, the front door flung open, and his godson stomped outside, lugging his school trunk behind him. Padfoot froze; the boy was so much bigger than the mere sack of potatoes he’d once held twelve years ago, though unlike back then, Harry was angry.
Very angry. He could feel Harry's rage even from his place between houses across the street.
Padfoot followed his godson, keeping his distance so as to not frighten the boy until Harry dropped his trunk and looked around warily, clearly unsure as to what to do or where he would go. Stepping out of the bushes, closer to the road, Padfoot stayed in the shadows as he willed Harry to get his wand out. It was dangerous for him to be wandering around like this. What was he doing?!
As though he could sense his godfather’s fear, Harry quickly opened his trunk and began rummaging inside, pulling out his wand.
Good, Harry. Lift it. Summon the Knight Bus, they’ll take you somewhere safe.
To his surprise, his godson turned his head, seeming to stare right at him. Fighting the urge to go to him, Padfoot whined under his breath, crouching to hide himself in the shadows, but Harry was still gawking at him, seemingly frozen in fear.
Bright lights curled around a corner as the Knight Bus came barrelling toward Harry, and Padfoot relaxed as relief flooded him. He heard Harry give a fake name, and climb onto the bus. Once they were gone, Padfoot decided to start making his way back toward London. If he could just get to The Leaky, he could hide among the other strays. With any luck, some witch or wizard would take pity on him and give him some table scraps.
How his legs hadn’t yet failed him, he couldn’t be sure. They wobbled with every step he took, and for a brief moment, he considered finding a place to sleep for the night. But it was too dangerous to stay out in the open. He would have to at least get to town, where he could find a skip to sleep behind. Pushing himself along the road, he shook himself in hopes that it would help him perk up a bit. Swaying slightly, his eyes threatened to fall shut, and after a few more steps, the world began to spin. Still, onward he pressed until he tripped, and everything went black.
He was lying on something soft, and warm. A crackle not far from where he laid was emanating more heat into the room.
Room?!
Despite the initial fear that surged through him, his eyes opened slowly, taking in his surroundings.
Yes. He was in a room. A sitting room from what he could gather from the furniture. A twinkle in the corner of his eye revealed a silver bowl close to his head. His nose twitched, sniffing the air, and his stomach growled in response. Chicken!
He tried to lift himself enough to reach inside the bowl, but his muscles protested, legs refusing to budge. Crying softly, he tried to tip the bowl over with his snout when movement behind him made him freeze.
“Are you awake?” The voice was female, and with another sniff in her direction as she came to kneel in front of him, muggle. She seemed apprehensive about trying to pet him, but carefully reached for the bowl, nudging it closer to him. “You’ve got to be hungry.”
He cried again, looking up at her pleadingly. If only he could feed himself, or transform so that he could talk to her if it wasn’t a sure way of getting himself caught. Still he hoped that she would somehow understand him, giving her his long-perfected puppy dog eyes.
His stomach growled again as her hand reached into the bowl and came out with some shredded chicken.
“Don’t bite my hand off, okay? I need it,” she said, holding the chicken in front of his snout.
Tilting his head to one side, he reached and gulped up the bit of chicken she had pulled out, thankful when she reached into the bowl again for some more.
“Poor baby,” she said softly, moving her legs until she was sitting on her bottom. “Let’s just eat a bit more, okay and then I’ll get you some water. You’re so skinny, I wish I could make you a whole chicken and let you go to town, but I don’t want you to get sick. So, we’ll just take it easy for now.”
That accent. She was American. Where the bloody hell was he?!
She hand-fed him the rest of what was in the bowl before standing and moving out of his line of sight. He took the opportunity to lift his head and have a look around. It was a sitting room. Was he in her home?
“I’m just glad I found you when I did. Lying so close to the road like that, you could’ve been killed,” she said as she came back with a bowl of water, which she placed in front of him. “I can get some dog food tomorrow if you want. Any preferences?”
Did she expect him to answer her?
Able to roll onto his elbows, he drank from the water bowl, already feeling a bit better.
“You seem to really like chicken thighs so maybe we’ll just stick with that for now. You can let me know if you get bored with it okay?”
He grunted into the water bowl, hoping that would be answer enough to satisfy her. Looking back up, he finally got a proper look at her. Long blonde hair that fell in waves over her shoulders, and blue eyes behind a pair of dark-rimmed glasses radiated warmth and kindness. Her lips were full and smiling softly at him.
Glancing over her shoulder at the front door, Padfoot slowly got up to his feet, prompting her to stand as well. His legs were still achey, but he knew he couldn’t stay here. It was mad. Kind as she was, he could not be her house pet. He was a wizard for Merlin’s sake, and a fairly decent one at that despite his limited use of magic for the last decade.
His steps were slower than he hoped, and he couldn’t walk without limping, which wasn’t ideal. But it was a better idea than staying and possibly getting himself caught. Or worse, getting far too comfortable. Going to the door, he looked back at her expectantly, raising one paw barely three inches off the ground to lazily scratch at the door.
She looked at him as though he’d lost his mind. “You don’t wanna go out there, big guy. It’s supposed to rain again tonight, why don’t you just stay here? It’s warm, and dry… and there’s food and water.”
He tried to scratch at the door again, but it was more effort than he could manage and wound up being much more of a half-hearted stomp. Perhaps she was right. He could at least stay for the night, have a full night’s rest, maybe even have a decent breakfast in the morning, and then set off for The Leaky Cauldron.
“Oh come on, I’m not that bad,” she said playfully, the corner of her lips curling slightly. “Please? I made you such a nice bed, that's gotta be better than sleeping on the street. Besides, if you get yourself caught by one of those dog wardens, and it turns out you don’t have a microchip, then I’ll have to pay fifty thousand quid to break you out, and then we’ll both be homeless.”
Looking back at her, his eyes fell on the bed she had made up for him. It had been rather comfortable, and she did seem keen to give him free access to food and fresh water. The rolling thunder from outside made up his mind, and he hobbled back toward the bed by the fire, laying in his front paws.
The muggle woman slowly kneeled beside him again. “I think you made the right decision.” Hesitantly, she held her hand out toward him. “My name’s Penelope. Most people call me Penny.”
Sniffing at the outstretched fingers, he caught residual scents of the chicken she had fed him and licked at them.
“You didn’t have a collar, would it be okay if I gave you a name? At least something I can call you besides ‘good boy’, you know?”
Instinctively, his tail began to wag at the sound of a dog’s favorite words.
Penny smiled again at him and slowly scratched under his chin. Oh, Merlin, that felt good. He turned his head and leaned into her touch, closing his eyes as his tail now thumped against his bed. His eyes closed as she scratched behind his ear. Yes, that was quite nice.
“So what should we call you?” she asked, now giving him long relaxed strokes over his head.
Padfoot rolled onto his back, waving a single paw in her direction. She had seemed to understand him before, maybe she would be able to again.
Padfoot, he thought to himself. You can call me Padfoot.
She chuckled softly, scooting closer to sit beside him, scratching his belly. “Those are some big paws you got there. What do you think of Bigfoot?”
He groaned, half from the lovely belly scratches he was getting, half from his approval of the temporary name. It was close enough to his true name that he could live with it for the night. His tongue lagged to one side of his snout, and a doggy grin formed as her scratches found the spot, making his back leg kick in delight.
“You like that?” she asked, her scratches speeding up, and by proxy making his tail wag harder. Laughing softly, Penny gave him a few long pets on his chest before pulling her hand away. “Okay, buddy. Why don’t you get some sleep, I’ll give you some more food in the morning.”
He rolled back onto his elbows as she stood and went to refill his water bowl, leaving it beside him.
“Wake me up if you need to use the bathroom, okay? I’m just down the hall. Second door to the left.” She pet his head one last time. “Good night, Bigfoot.”

I Don't Know Who You're Talking About
Remus Lupin x reader words; 2817 warnings; angst, blood, sad, murder, the usual part two this is so cutesy (NOT!) I wrote this on my phone in the car so if there's any mistakes thats my excuse. Also Y/m/n stands for your/marauders/nickname because ofc you're a Marauder and of course you're an animagus. like duh.
“Remus, it's a full moon tonight, you can't go. We can't risk that.” I persisted, staring holes into the back of the boy's head.
He turned around angrily, “Why does it even matter, Y/n?” He yelled, and a drop of spit flew from his lips. “After everything that's happened, you're gonna stop me from going to that traitors trial?”
“If you're gonna act like this, yes! I am going to stop you.” I yelled back, taking a step towards him as my voice softened. “And we don't know if Sirius was framed or not, he's our best friend. Do you really think he'd do something like this?”
Remus shook his head, his shoulders dropping, “I think it doesn't matter, because James and Lily are dead. And Peter! Someone needs to be punished for it, and all the signs point to him.”
I frowned, “I don't think he did it.”
“Well, you think wrong.” Remus said, turning back around and walking out of the house, slamming the door behind him.
“Remus, I swear to Merlin, if you apparate to the Ministry-” I was cut off by the loud cracking noise of apparition. He didn't even grab his coat.
“Fancy seeing you here.” I said coolly as I sat next to Remus. He shook his head, anger radiating from his skin.
“You're ridiculous.” He muttered and I scoffed.
“There's no way you're taking your frustration out on me, right now.” I flashed a smile at a woman I recognized from Hogwarts, she smiled back sadly. I focused in on the middle of the room, where an empty cage was being rolled out.
“I can't even talk to you. You’re so annoying.” Remus stood up but was stopped as a new cage was rolled in. I gently pulled him back down as we stared at Sirius. He was caged and muzzled like a dog.
Remus squeezed my hand, and I squeezed back. Sirius’ clothes were torn, his usual fancy jacket he stole from his mother covered in dirt and blood. He looked around the room frantically, eyes wide and tears streaming down his cheeks. He made eye contact with me and placed his hands on the bars, silently begging me to believe that he didn't do this, he could never.
I gave him a look of worry as the Minister cleared his throat, “Sirius Black, son of Orion and Walburga Black, you are here today under the accusation of working with He Who Must Not Be Named and the murder of twelve muggles, one witch, Lily Potter, and two wizards, James Potter and Peter Pettigrew. How do you plead?”
The moment the muzzle was off his mouth he answered hastily. “Not guilty!” Sirius screamed, his voice shaky and broken. He shook in his cage, “I didn't do it, please! I would never hurt my frie-”
“Silence!” Crouch demanded, holding his hand up, his ring glinted in the candlelight. “We need not hear more.” He scribbled on a piece of parchment and handed it to the boy standing next to him. The boy studied the paper.
He nodded, “Of course, sir.” He left the room quickly.
There were quiet whispers floating around the room, speculating what the young boy could possibly be searching for.
“Now, because there seems to be a lack of witnesses, which I am sure is just how you wanted it to be, unfortunately we cannot blindly believe that you are innocent.” The boy came back into the room, holding a small vial of clear liquid.
“Veritaserum.” Remus mumbled and I nodded.
“It's a good idea.” I whispered.
The vial was brought up to Sirius’ lips, who drank it willingly, thankful to finally have a good alibi.
“I will ask you plain and simply, did you reveal the hidden location of James and Lily Potter to the Dark Lord, resulting in them being murdered and their son orphaned?”
Sirius shook his head, “I did not.” My shoulders relaxed as it felt as if a weight had been lifted. Remus still looked at him coldly, his eyebrows furrowed.
“Did you murder that group of muggles, and your own friend, Peter Pettigrew, leaving behind only his finger?”
“No, I did not.”
The room was silent as Crouch thought. They glanced between the man behind bars and the one upon a podium, his stare belittling. He glanced at the empty bottle on his desk, and back to Sirius before whispering to a man beside him.
I glanced at Sirius who was already looking at us. He gave me a small smile and I returned it.
“It is probable.” The man said quietly, but still in earshot.
Crouch nodded and banged his hammer, “It has been decided. The Veritaserum that was given to was a flake. So, under Mr. Barty Crouch, Minister of Magic, you plead guilty, and are sentenced to life in Azkaban.”
Some people cheered, others let out yells of protest. Remus slipped away, walking out of the room angrily.
“No, that's rubbish.” I yelled as he began to be rolled away. He screamed in fear, going crazy inside of the cage.
I stood up and pushed past people, carefully jumping down to the floor and below the Minister. The room silenced again and the cage stopped dragging across the floor. Everyone had their eyes on me.
“Let me talk to him.”
Crouch looked amused, “Miss-”
“It is only a custom. Tradition, even. You must allow me a word with Sirius Black before you send him off. It's in the books.”
Crouch glanced at the book as the boy flipped to the pages. He sighed as he read the words, telling him that it was indeed allowed for loved ones to speak with the person before they are sent off.
“I'm afraid he cannot be out of his cage, it is not up for discu-”
“I can talk through the bars, can I not?”
“Fine. Follow them.”
I followed them out quietly, ignoring the angry stares I got from people, even the spit that they shot at me, landing right in front of my feet. Once we were in the hall, the men stood to the side and I walked up the cage hastily, putting my hands on the bars.
“Sirius, I'm going to ask you this once, and only once, and I need you to tell me the truth. Whatever you say, I will believe you. Did you or did you not kill James and Lily?”
Sirius looked me straight in the eyes, desperate, “Y/n, please, I would never.”
“It's a yes or no question.”
“No. I didn't.”
I paused, before grabbing his hand through the bars, “I believe you. It's okay, I'll figure this out.”
His eyes filled with tears again and being this close I could see the heavy bags below his eyes. His hair was a ratty mess and his skin was blemished and dirty.
“Did you know she was pregnant?” Sirius asked and my eyes widened.
“She was?”
“Yeah. They were going to tell us all on Christmas, but James let it slip to me.”
I took a deep breath, “Oh my.”
There was a moment of silence between us, neither daring to break the quiet atmosphere.
“Does Remus hate me?” He whispered and my heart broke.
“I don't know.” I answered honestly and he nodded, his eyes averting to the bottom of the cage.
“I didn't kill them. I'd never. He was my best friend, my brother.” Sirius began sobbing. “I've already lost him, and Lily. I've lost my godson. And now Remus. I can’t lose you, Y/n/n, I can’t.” he cut himself off with a gasp.
“It's time to go.” One of the men said, beginning to drag him away.
“I can’t lose you!” Sirius yelled as he was dragged away.
“You won’t.” I whispered before I looked up at the man as he was dragged away, “Sirius! I love you!”
He smiled sadly, “I love you too, Y/m/n!”
I rubbed my hands together quickly as I walked up to the front door. I placed my hand on the freezing knob and opened it, silently cursing myself for not locking it before I left.
It was half an hour until sundown, so I immediately apparated home to help prepare Remus - and myself - for the night. It was probably going to be one of the hardest he's ever experienced, and I felt terrible for him.
“Remus?” I called out, only to get no response. I furrowed my brows taking my jacket off slowly, “Baby, I know you're mad but I still want to help you tonight.” Still, nothing.
I set down my bag and slipped off my shoes before quietly walking to the bedroom.
“Rem?” I asked softly, pushing open the door and expecting to see him sitting on the bed, head between his hands as he cried softly.
But he wasn't. In fact the room seemed to be the same as it was before I left. The bathroom was dark and empty. No sign of Remus anywhere.
I walked to the kitchen, hoping to find him sipping from a mug of tea while staring out the window, like he usually is. But there was nothing.
I slipped on my coat and threw on my shoes, ignoring my bag as I quickly left the house. I pulled out the flip phone Remus had insisted on us getting.
“For easier communication.” He’d say.
I struggled to work the muggle device, but managed to send a quick ‘where r u?!’ text. At this point, the sun was beginning its descent and the full moon shone brightly.
I paused for a moment, thinking of any possible place he could be.
“The Shrieking Shack.” I said quietly to myself, immediately apparating to the raggedy house.
However, just like our own, it was also completely empty, save for one man.
“Professor Dumbledore?” I asked quietly. The older man turned around and smiled gently. I didn't fail to notice the tears he wiped from his cheeks.
“Ah, Miss L/n, or is it Lupin, yet?” Dumdledore asked.
I shook my head, “Not yet, no. But speaking of the man, has he been here?”
Dumbledore looked around, “No, I'm afraid not.” He glanced out of the window, at the light in the darkening sky. “It is a full moon tonight, isn't it?”
I stood beside him with a sigh, “That it is.”
And the night of Sirius’ trial as well, what unfortunate timing.”
“I'd have to agree.”
“You cannot find him?”
I turned around and leaned against the window sill, “No. We were fighting, before the trial. It's been rough for everyone and we took it out on each other.”
Dumbledore nodded, “Ah, it happens. I suppose, however, you should spend less time with this old man, and more time finding who I would assume to be a werewolf by now.”
I opened my mouth to answer but was cut off by a loud howl. The sun had completely dipped below the horizon, and the werewolves were born.
“Well, it seems you'd be correct.”
“Was that him?” Dumbledore asked.
I shook my head, “No, his howl is deeper. I assume that was a female.”
“Ah.”
I shifted my feet, feeling awkward. “Uhm, I'm gonna go look for him.”
“Take a blanket.” Dumdledore said, handing me a brown bundle of cloth.
“Thank you.”
“Go.”
I nodded and pushed open the door. I sighed at the heavy snowfall, looking into the distant trees. It was going to be a long night.
The tears started as the sun made an appearance again. The weight of everything finally hitting and pressure built behind my eyes.
“Remus, please, where are you?” I called out, my voice hoarse and salty tears slipped into my mouth. I wiped the running snot from my upper lip, my shoulders shaking.
I passed a tree and the bright color of red caught my eye. A blood trail. I followed it eagerly, a small sob leaving my lips and I clutched tightly onto the blanket. It led behind a rock, where my heart broke.
Remus lay there, naked and in a fetal position. He had long cuts all along his body and the snow around him was trained red. He shivered in the snow and his lips were blue.
He glanced at me weakly, sadness filling his eyes. “Y/n.” He whispered, his voice almost non existent.
I snapped out my daze and grabbed onto him, quickly pulling him to his feet and wrapping the blanket around him. He clutched onto me and cried, I cried with him.
I apparated to the house silently and he fell to his knees, I followed him, holding him in the kneeling position.
“It’s okay.” I whispered, biting back my own tears as he sobbed. “It’s okay.”
He cried, “It’s not!”
“Remus, let me clean you.” I said softly, wiping my tears after a few long moments.
“Okay.” He whispered, staring ahead blankly.
It was quiet, again, as I cleaned and bandaged. A few times he'd cry again, and I'd let him, figuring it was better to continue what I'm doing. I led him to bed and closed the curtains so the sun didn't shine through.
“Do you feel better?” I asked quietly once I got into bed.
“I'm not sure I feel much of anything, right now.” Remus said, facing his back towards me.
I looked at him sadly and turned over, closing my eyes and finally letting sleep overtake me.
When I woke up the bed was empty. I sighed, assuming he was in the kitchen or living room. I used the bathroom and walked out of the bedroom. I walked out into the living room.
“Remus?” I asked. He wasn't there. I looked into the kitchen and he wasn't to be seen. The deja vu of the night before was prominent. “Are you serious?”
A note sat neatly on the fridge. I glanced at the magnet, it was a picture of Remus and I smiling wide, faces pressed against each other. We got it from a muggle - or no-maj - vendor when we visited america. I noticed the second one we had was gone. I shook my head and took the note from beneath the magnet.
I immediately recognized the handwriting as Remus’. I stared at the letter, the one assigned to me. The last letter of my name was splotchy, stained with a tear.
I gently tore open the letter.
Dear Y/n,
I don't know what I'm doing. I don't know why I'm doing what I'm doing. I'm so sorry for what I'm doing.
I am so scared. With James, Lily, and Peter dead, and Sirius in Azkaban, I just don't know what to do.
You mean the world to me. You're perfect, beautiful, intelligent, witty, talented, you're everything good and nothing bad. At this point you are the world for me.
Which is why I have to do this. I can't drag you down to darkness with me, I'd never forgive myself. I know this will hurt you, it's hurting me too, but I also know you can get through this.
I want you to be happy, and I think that's impossible if I’m in your life. So I'm taking the liberty to leave it. My stuff will be magically transported once I find a place to stay, keep the house, you deserve it more than I do.
I love you more than life itself.
with the deepest of regrets,
Remus
P.S. you are worth EVERYTHING! don't ever settle for the bare minimum.
I dropped the letter and stared out of the window. The snow fell gently, piling up on the ground. It felt rather similar to the quiet tears dripping down my face. In the span of four weeks, I had lost everyone important to me. I didn't realize I had any tears left to cry.
I suppose I'll have to get a dog to keep me company now.
“Welcome, Professor L/n.” Dumbledore greeted.
I smiled at the group of teachers that came to welcome me. “Thank you, I appreciate all of you. Especially you, Minnie.” I said with a wink and Professor McGonagall laughed wetly, wiping a stray tear from her eye.
“Okay okay, let's not suffocate her on her first day. Dinner is in an hour, I trust you to find your room.” Dumbledore said and I nodded as the teachers dispersed.
“Severus.” I called out and the man stopped in his tracks. I walked over as he turned around and pulled him into a tight hug. He looked at me weirdly once I pulled away. “I know you loved her too.”
He knew exactly who I was talking about, “I have no idea who you're talking about.”
“I know you don't.” I smiled and began walking towards my room.
“I’m sorry about Lupin.” He said and I paused.
“I have no idea who you're talking about.”

Hi! Do you have any characters that you find slightly similar to Loki or Voldemort/Tom Riddle in terms of personality or backstory or just vibes?
For example, as huge fan of frostiron I LOVE Loki. And after reading fics about him for years I can’t help but notice small similarities between him and Sirius. They’re NOT the same, not at all. But I personally see a lot of stuff that they have in common. Both characters are very prideful, strong magicians, black sheep of their family, have a dark side but ultimately end up doing more good than bad. And that’s if we include both canon and fanon. It’s okay if you disagree, that’s just my personal perception)
For Voldemort I was unable to find any sort of counterpart🤷♀️
Soo, my question remains. I am very curious as to what you have in mind;)
I assume you mean Loki from the movies; I am unfortunately unfamiliar with him. The only Loki I know is the one from Norse mythology, and I don't remember very much about him, either. I do remember he was a shapeshifter, like many gods, so I suppose he has that in common with Sirius! I can't speak further of similarities, that's practically all I remember.
As for Voldemort...I don't know. The Evil Queen from Snow White? 😂 They both hear a prophecy warning of their downfall and they act on it and start beef with kids. And the kids end up surviving and winning with the power of love.
If we just take canon V at face value, then he's similar to all fairytale villains. Or to Palpatine, I suppose.
If we look at Voldemort as a more human character, not just Evil TM, then I could see some similarities with Magneto from X-men(at least from one or two universes of that big world): the hate for the muggles/people without mutations that steams from their childhood, their lives were impacted by ww2, both ridiculously powerful, both claiming they fight for wizards/mutants. Also they both have a badass lady as a second in command.
But, ofc, Magneto is allowed to be human, when Voldemort is doomed by the narative and his position as villain in children story. While Magneto is clearly a villain and loves genocide, he at least thinks he's doing the right thing for his kind; Voldemort is just there to be bad.
For Sirius, you can make a case about Aragorn, I suppose? Both come from ancient, noble, rich lineage, but they shy away from the burden of it, they're both good (but rough) men, they are protectors for their respective protagonists, they would die for Harry/Frodo, and they're both fighting this supreme evil that is threatening the world. They both obey basically God on Earth (Albus and Gandalf).
I think it's easier to find Sirius similarities, I can think of some in A song of Ice and Fire, but it's harder for Voldemort because he barely has any 'meat' to his character in canon. He's just there as a lesson for kids, as an obstacle for Harry to overcome.
There is that saying that a story is only as good as it's villain, and it's true. If Harry Potter was anything other than a children's book, than it would be a very bad story, because the villain is just a prop. However, since it's for children, the rules are obviously different. Ironically, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is considered the best book in the series because it had a great villain- Sirius. That book is so beloved because for most of it we believed Sirius to be a villain, and he was real in a way Voldemort never is, he is human, and he is scary.
So it falls on us, the fandom, to give Voldemort something real, to turn him into a person, and we all go in slightly different directions, hence why it's so hard to find a counterpart for him in established literature/cinema.

Ekkk oh my gosh Marauders prompts! Peter is my favorite would you mind if I make a request for him x female reader please? (I understand if you don't wanna write peter unfortunately for me not many people like him which I understand but I still love him)
Prompt 19. “Who are you?”
I'm not great with plots so if you wanna write it differently that's fine but I was thinking something along the lines of reader says the prompt to peter in an argument that they're having because peters behaviour has been a bit strange. and he's started saying things around her that indicate that he's sympathetic towards voldemorts cause. and that he thinks magic should be for magical born people not muggle borns and that maybe we'd all be safer off just listening to voldemort and then there wouldn't have to be a war and reader understands that he's just scared but at the same she's slightly sickened that he could even consider that and she's just like wtf
Omg, I really didn’t expect to get a Peter request at all, and then it turns out to be the first! Yes, ofc, I love young Peter sm haha. Really there aren’t enough Peter fanfics!
Now, I’ll get started for this one.
Warnings: a bit of angst, yelling, kissing, killing, happy ending.
It’s was June 1978 and it was the last week at Hogwarts, for some, this felt different than for others.
Everyone was excited for the summer, finally no homework! Though they where going to miss Hogwarts of course. Then you had the seventh years, they felt different, of course they where excited, they where going into the big wide world!
Yet for this same reason they where nervous, maybe a little scared. And if these seventh years where already nervous and scared, we are headed for the topic of the few Gryffindors that where all called to Dumbledores office one day.
They felt the same, excited, nervous, scared. But this was for a whole different reason, because they weren’t going to find a new job yet, no, they where going to fight in a seemingly never ending war.
But right now, they tried getting their minds of of that, as all the seventh year Gryffindors sat on the couch talking and laughing, bringing up memories from the past years.
Mary McDonald sat on a love seat where two people would easily fit, but she had refused to move and occupied the whole thing. Remus Lupin and Sirius Black sat on the ground by the fire, Sirius trailing figures over the scars on Remus’ hand.
James Potter and Lily Evans occupied a love seat together, the latter sitting on his lap as he sometimes bent down to kiss her temple lovingly. Marlene McKinnon sat on the ground with Dorcas Meadows behind her in an armchair, combing her long nails trough her girlfriends hair.
Dorcas surprisingly was not a Gryffindor but a Slytherin, yet they had known her since fourth year and the group had told Dumbledore that he could trust her to also join the order.
Then there where Peter Pettigrew and Y/n L/n who had stubbornly occupied the whole couch as she laid her head in his lap and he was softly trailing circles on her shoulders with his thumb.
It was starting to get late and Marlene and Dorcas where the first to leave, Marlene bringing Dorcas to her dorm and probably staying there.
It didn’t take long before Peter and Y/n where alone and she turned on his lap, so instead of laying on her side she laid on her back.
She smiled up at him and he bend down to softly kiss her lips.
“Are you scared of the war?” He asked her after a while. “Pete! I thought we promised not to talk about it tonight!” She said and he shrugged. “Yeah, but that was before everyone left.”
She sighed and moved her eyes to the ceiling of the common room. “Yes, a bit, but I am ready to do what I have to do to stop this.” She said determined. “You?” She asked and he sighed.
“I’ve been thinking.” He said softly. “We could just… be save and not join the order…” he said and she looked at him with a bewildered look. “I’m just saying, what if we’d join you-know-who? That would reassure more safety then the order.” He said and she got up and took a step back.
“Peter, I really hope your joking, because this isn’t funny.” She said with a horrified look in her eyes and he quickly got up. “No, love, you don’t understand. I just want you to be safe, I just can’t lose you.” He said and she shook her head.
“But that is not the way to do it, Peter.” She said harshly. “I’m even surprised you managed to think about that. Next thing you know you are agreeing with his believes.” Her voice started to grow louder. “Do you? Do you believe that muggleborns shouldn’t do magic and that they should be killed?” She asked with raised eyebrows.
“No! No of course no-” but he couldn’t finish his sentence. “Do you believe it’s completely fine to enter someone’s house and kill their entire family just because of their blood?” She continued and he put his hands over his ears shaking his head. “Do you-” she started again but this time he interrupted her and yelled.
“Yeah! Maybe!” He said and then clapped a hand over his mouth, obviously not having meant it. She took another step back. “Who are you?” She asked with a shaking voice. “Who are you and what have you done with my sweet Peter?” She croaked out.
“No, no I did not mean that! You where just freaking me out I wanted you to stop!” He looked at her bewildered. “I know, I know it was a stupid idea and I know we would never want to join him. I’m just so scared I will lose you.” He said as he met her eyes with tears in his eyes.
“You are the best thing. That’s ever happened to me. I- I’d just do anything for you, because I love you so much. Of course we aren’t joining him, but at least just stay neutral. Don’t join the war at all, we’re both pureblood, we’ll be safe- you’ll be safe!” He said and she shook her head.
“I’m sorry Pete, but right now, I just need some time.” She said before walking off, headed for her dorm.
They didn’t talk for a few days and of course their friends questioned what happened, but they didn’t say a thing.
Y/n started to think about Peters words. She, of course, understood he really hadn’t meant what he said, she felt happy he wanted her to be safe, but she just wanted him to understand they also had the protect those innocent people being killed, she wanted him to understand that they could make a difference.
On their last day, Y/n just came back from telling a few hufflepuff friends that where a year below her, goodbye. She walked trough and empty hallway, looking at her feet when she bumped into someone.
He grabbed her by her waist to stop her from falling and she met with Peters eyes. He steadied her and then took a step back. “I’m sorry, Y/n. I really am. And I understand if you want to just- break up and not talk to me ever again, but just know I really love you.” He said.
“Peter, i need you to understand that I really want to join the order, I know I am risking my life, but what will it matter when we can prevent it from killing other innocent people?” She asked and he let out a sigh.
“I do really understand that, love. And I of course won’t tell you what to do and I’ll be behind you in every decision you make.” He took a small step closer to her. “I would never join the other side and it’s just something stupid I said after a few drinks and a long day.” He shook his head.
“It’s fine, Peter, we’ll just forget about it.” She said. And just like that. They continued with their lives, they joined the order, stopped many death eaters and never joined the other side.
Yet, that thought of Peter, that one night where he said those horrible things always sat in the back of her head. Taunting her and not leaving her alone.
One night, she had convinced James, Sirius and Remus to visit Peter who was sick and couldn’t join their meeting. It had just ended and when she suggested it, the boys thought it a rather good idea.
They apparated a street away and walked to Peters house, there, at the front door, they heard voices. “No! No I won’t do it!” They heard Peter and they shared glances and stopped in their tracks. “But oh, dear Pettigrew. If you don’t, we’ll kill you, because what are you going to do, it’s three against one.” Another voice spoke.
“I don’t care! I will not join you! I will not go with you, I will not betray my friends!” His voice started to raise. “Fine then, we’ll kill that little girlfriend of yours.” Another unknown voice said.
“You don’t even know where to find her. She’s in hiding and I can tell her to stay there. You think I’m stupid? If I join you, I’ll have to eat her out anyway, you’ll kill her anyway, I will not do that.” He said angrily. “Kill me if you want, I’m not joining you.”
The four shared glances before silently sneaking to the house and when they turned to corner, Sirius had a finger against his lips to silence Peter and not announce their presence.
They got the three death eaters with a surprise attack and Remus send a partronus to Moody who could come collect them with a few other Aurora as they knew he had headed to the ministry after the meeting.
“Peter!” Y/n ran into his arms and hugged him tightly. “I’m so proud of you.” She said and he held her, kissing her cheek and whispering reassuring things in her ear.
Two years later, the word about the prophecy got out. The Potters went into hiding and Peter became their secret keeper after Sirius backed out at the last moment.
While the Potters where in hiding, Dumbledore found out about the Horcruxes and he sent people in missions to find them. He even asked the help of Pandora Lovegood, who wasn’t in the order, to talk with the grey lady, as she was the only one the lady would talk to.
That’s how they found the diadem easily. Y/n and Sirius where sent on a mission to Malfoy manor, where they used a poly juice potion to look like the Carrow twins who where currently captured and being questioned by the order, unbeknownst to Voldemort.
They roamed the manor and eventually found the Diary who had been trusted to Lucius. It was hidden in his room under a lose floorboard, nothing Sirius couldn’t find.
They easily destroyed it with fiendfyre, which didn’t go unnoticed by Voldemort as he grew weaker and demanded Lucius show him the book, which he didn’t have anymore.
With smirks they tried to hide, they had found out the next Horcrux was in Bellatrix’ vault at Gringotts. Y/n has managed to pickpocket the woman and get the key and then got to take one of her hairs.
Not telling anyone else, they went on a self appointed mission and managed to destroy Helga Hufflepuffs cup aswel.
They had proudly told their story to the order, some where mad, others proud and many where happy they where one step closer to defeating Voldemort.
“It’s only one more, seriously, what is it?” Sirius had groaned at a meeeting and Dumbledore was silent. “I do not know. But we still have the Carrow twins. I think it better if we sent you two undercover again and find out.” He said and the two agreed.
They had to sit trough meetings where they watched as Nagini killed people and everyone grinned as it happened.
“Im sick of that snake killing literally anything it can find.” Sirius had told her as the stalked trough the halls of Malfoy manor. “Careful, there it comes.” Y/n had grinned and Sirius clenched his wants as his knuckles became white.
“Avada Kedavra!” Just like that he killed the snake and Y/n’s eyes widened as she looked at him. “Sirius! Sirius what did you do!?” She panicked, but then, she saw the black smoke rising from the snake.
“It was her… she was the last Horcrux!” Y/n’s eyes widened. “We- we have to find him! We can kill him now!” She had said.
This had failed and they had quickly apparated away when it was found they where not the Carrow twins.
In the end, Sirius did end up Killing Voldemort, but this was already a week later.
The Potters could come out of hiding, Peter too, as he had been in hiding as the secret keeper.
Years later, they stood on platform 9¾ where they waved at their kids. Harry was already in his second year. Y/n and Peters daughter started her first year today and the twins Remus and Sirius adopted also started today.

having a brainrot about pandalily omg with trans lily because she's my queen I love her. I'm 100% writing her like that
I'm so excited to write this fic I've already found the name : 'no grave can hold my body down (I'll crawl home to her)'
the main focus will be on regulus' and pandora's quest to destroy the horcruxes in their 7th year after taking up the roles as spies for the order to protect everyone.
we will also see a lot of andromeda black because I find her story incredible (running away to live with her muggle husband as one of the heiress of the black family is just 🤌) and because I need to explore the black sisters dynamic for my own entertainment.
I'm thinking about introducing mary very later on with pandalily but I need to explore her character alone first I think because she has to have the spotlight.
I want remus and peter to have a thing going on during their 4th year so so bad like not extremely serious maybe but in my head They Had A Thing, even though we will have wolfstar endgame. I also came across sybill x peter and got sucked in so I might plan that a bit as well
POPPY AND MINERVA !!!!! THAT'S IT THAT'S ALL I LOVE THEM. THEY HAVE A HOUSE TOGETHER. I KNOW IT I'M THEIR CARPET
lily won't be the only trans character, as regulus will also be a trans guy and sirius will probably be genderfluid !
also jegulus ofc my love, because I need them to live happily in a cottage they renovated all by themselves after all of this shit will be done
I almost forgot to mention dorlene. so much dorlene as much as I'll be able to fit
this will obviously be a canon divergent fic where a lot of people survive although it will have quite a lot of angst (I just know I'll go feral with the black brothers and sisters)

Over the next few days, Daisy noted there was a change in the school. People seemed to be on edge about this muggle attack and everywhere she went there were whispers about ‘You Know Who’ and ‘Death Eaters’. It was hard to bear. Younger students were petrified of going home for Easter and Muggleborns frequently chatted in hushed whispers about the prospect of entering a Wizards-only space. Would the same happen to them?
It didn’t help that around every corner seemed to be some smarmy Slytherin with a smirk on their face as their peers milled about petrified. And the biggest antagonist of them all was Barty Crouch. He had his cronies with him most of the time and the group of them never feared to talk loudly about something they’d heard about to do with Death Eater activity. Of course, the teachers never caught them in the act. And even when Daisy was sure they must have heard about what they were discussing most of them ignored it as if it was just schoolyard banter. That angered Daisy more. The teachers were ignoring the problem. Whether they were being ignorant of the problems in the wizarding world due to the safety of their Scottish castle or they didn’t want to be fear mongers, especially with the younger students, she didn’t know. Still, it wasn’t working and that was starting to frustrate her. Not that she had much chance to be frustrated at the moment. No, at this point in time three pairs of eyes were ogling her, waiting for her to continue her story. She had been telling them about her and Sirius. How one thing had led to another at his Uncle’s place when she’d trailed off catching the end of a conversation as Snape, Crouch, McNair and Regulus passed by not even noting their presence as they headed to the restricted section of the library.
‘So come on!’ Alice giggled not even noting them pass. Lily had glanced towards Snape who kept his head up and his eyes forward before she turned back an uneasy look on her face. That was Daisy’s other problem. Since the attack, Lily had been stuck to her like glue. Daisy supposed she understood. The way they’d lost their parents made them both fear losing the other and she had thought for a good portion of the day that her twin had been lost in the attack. James was helping and so were the girls but once Lily was lost in her own head she insisted on being near her sister. For comfort. Daisy got that but sometimes it felt like she was struggling to breathe. She had seen her sister going into a spiral as they’d researched ‘healing draughts for the gravely wounded’ for potions and so she had changed the topic and laid the truth bomb on them that she and Sirius had slept together.
‘What do you want me to say?’ Daisy said meekly. She hadn’t even intended on telling any of them, not just yet, and now her friends were watching her agog as they waited for intimate details. Was it good?’ Alice asked inquisitively. ‘Yeah,’ she said. ‘Wow Dais,’ Marlene smirked, ‘I can feel his wounded ego from here.’ ‘Well, what am I supposed to say?’ Daisy asked looking at her fellow blonde. ‘That he rocked your world? Best night of your life?’ Marlene chuckled. ‘Well it was a very good day,’ Daisy said, ‘he was very sweet.’ ‘Sirius?’ Alice baulked. ‘Yes,’ Daisy replied indignantly making her friend pale. ‘Oh, I don’t mean it in a bad way. I just thought…well given he’s quite the, I mean, he-’ Alice said tripping over her words at every stage. ‘What my pathetic pal is trying to stumble to the point of is that she thinks Sirius is a kind of ‘wham, bam, thank you mam’ kind of guy, right Al?’ Marlene said. ‘I was just worried he was a bit forward,’ Alice said, ‘I mean Lil said-’ ‘Lil said what?’ Daisy asked raising an eyebrow. Lily looked at her sister swallowing guiltily. ‘I just mentioned you saying you weren’t ready yet…we were talking about me and James,’ Lily said biting her lip, ‘sorry I didn’t mean to.’ ‘It’s fine,’ Daisy lied her eyes going to her textbook. The girls fell quiet for a moment as an awkward tension descended on the group. After a moment or so Alice excused herself to go and find another reference book and Lily followed feeling the ire rolling off Daisy. As they disappeared out of sight Marlene caught her friend’s attention. ‘It’s probably a bit my fault anyway,’ Marlene said as Daisy looked up at her, ‘Alice thinking that I mean.’ ‘How come?’ Daisy asked. ‘Did you forget there was a good chunk of last year where I wasn’t so fond of him, remember?’ ‘Oh…yeah,’ Daisy said. Marlene threw her a weak smile. ‘He’d dumped me. You and I weren’t friends. I could see how close the pair of you were. I guess I probably said a lot of stuff that might have clouded Alice’s judgement,’ Marlene said. Daisy nodded. ‘I guess we’ve never really talked about that,’ Daisy said, ‘but I’m not going to tell you off for bad-mouthing your ex-boyfriend am I?’ ‘You could if you wanted to,’ Marlene said with a smile. ‘You felt how you felt about it. I’m not going to say you’re wrong because we’re a couple now,’ Daisy said. ‘No, I know. I guess,’ Marlene said, ‘I guess it’s hard. It’s odd.’ ‘What do you mean?’ Daisy asked, her eyebrows knitting together. ‘Because he was never like that with me y’know?’ Marlene sighed making Daisy frown, ‘I mean he wasn’t outwardly horrible. He just always seemed to be distracted. Like he was waiting for something else. I suppose he was.’ ‘What?’ Daisy asked confused. Marlene rolled her eyes and laughed. ‘You, you daft cow,’ Marlene smirked making Daisy blush, ‘bloody hell the pair of you are together now and you still don’t realise how long you’ve been pining after one another.’ ‘It took us long enough huh?’ Daisy said with a smile. ‘Yeah it did,’ Marlene said. Daisy dropped her gaze again. It was odd discussing this with Marlene. Since her accident she had always lived with that other side of Sirius. The loving and tender one. Not the romancer. Not the indifferent boyfriend. And she realised at that moment that she had sort of neglected her friend. That she had taken it for granted just how ‘okay’ with the situation Marlene was.
After a beat, she looked up and said, ‘Mar?’ ‘Yeah?’ she asked glancing up from the textbook she had turned her attention back to. ‘Did you hate me?’ Daisy asked meekly, ‘when you found out you mean?’ ‘No…no I don’t think I did,’ Marlene said. ‘How? I mean you guys had just split up and I was spending nearly every hour with them. I mean I know I had reasons but it can’t have been easy.’ ‘It wasn’t. And at first, I thought you two were together and just not telling me.’ ‘We weren’t. I mean that’s one of the reasons I was mortified even contemplating liking him,’ Daisy said. ‘See?’ Marlene said, ‘how could I be angry about that?’ ‘But you didn’t like him. And I was spending time with him. Did you not want to scream at me not to be so stupid?’ Daisy asked nervously. ‘No, because his personality wasn’t the reason I didn’t like him. It was the way I was treated and I could see he was never the same with you like he was with me. I could see he really cared for you,’ Marlene said. ‘I don’t understand,’ Daisy said. ‘I know he’s not a bad guy. Actually, he’s one of the better ones around this place but he wasn’t with me. Like I said he wasn’t horrible just…indifferent. And when I saw the way he was with you that was just more clear to me y’know? And I was angry because I’d rather he’d have just left well alone. I wish we’d never got together,’ she said sadly. ‘I don’t think he knew,’ Daisy said, ‘not then.’ ‘I think he knew the moment you had your accident,’ Marlene countered, ‘I could feel it. The change. It was instantaneous.’ ‘I don’t know,’ Daisy said. Was Marlene right? Had Sirius liked her for that long? That night seemed aeons away now and she knew she hadn’t started liking him until afterwards though she couldn’t pinpoint the moment she did know. ‘Well, whenever it was doesn’t matter. Either way, I can claim I won the breakup,’ she said triumphantly. ‘What?’ Daisy giggled. ‘I got a new boyfriend ages before he managed to pluck up the courage to ask you out. Hence I win,’ she said. Daisy burst into a fit of giggles, ‘I might tell him that you know.’ ‘Oh yeah damage the boy's ego even more,’ Marlene chuckled. ‘Well I didn’t avenge you as I should’ve at the time so why not now,’ Daisy replied as the two laughed. After it died down Marlene looked at her and placed her hand on the back of her friend's.
‘I’m glad it was good…your first time I mean. You deserve that,’ Marlene said with a smile that seemed unsure as it fell back into a neutral expression. Daisy felt a knot in her stomach. ‘It was,’ Daisy said clearing her throat, ‘Mar?’ ‘It wasn’t Sirius,’ Marlene said immediately understanding whatever line of questioning her friend had for her. ‘Was it Pierre?’ Daisy asked, ‘I mean I know Alice and Frank… ‘No it was way before that,’ Marlene said, ‘it was after Sirius and I had broken up. It was after we found out you’d gone to the Potter’s for New Year.’ ‘Not my best move,’ Daisy said feeling that familiar surge of guilt at the thought of missing her parents last Christmas. ‘I didn’t care about New Year,’ Marlene said, ‘I was upset Sirius had lied about going home for Christmas.’ ‘He lied?’ Daisy asked. ‘He told me he was going home for Christmas and when I came back the pair of you had spent it together in the castle. That’s when I started getting paranoid,’ Marlene shrugged. ‘Oh, I didn’t know,’ Daisy said feeling another layer of guilt settle in on her. Had Sirius lied? She had always assumed he had chosen to stay at the castle early on though she couldn’t recall if that was the truth. ‘Yeah, so I had a night alone crying in the astronomy tower and well I sorta met someone up there going through some stuff themselves,’ Marlene said, ‘and then one thing led to another and well…’ ‘Who?’ Daisy asked wracking her brains for the boy it could’ve been. ‘…Remus,’ she said biting her lip and making Daisy’s eyes go wide. Her mouth fell agape at the revelation as she tried to picture how her best friend and Remus could’ve ended up in that situation. After a moment or two Marlene burst into a fit of giggles making Daisy look at her confused, ‘kidding!’ ‘I was going to say,’ Daisy said, ‘I mean I know the boy can keep a secret but bloody hell!’ ‘Nah I don’t think he’d recover having to see me again if it was true,’ Marlene said. ‘So who was it?’ ‘Tim Ridgely from Ravenclaw. Left last year,’ Marlene said, ‘and honestly not that good.’
Before Marlene could follow on Lily and Alice reappeared and slid back into their chairs. Alice spoke first, ‘what wasn’t good?’ ‘Nothing,’ Marlene said glancing at Daisy who nodded just a touch to show she understood. ‘Get what you need?’ Daisy asked noting the new textbook in front of Alice though as her gaze fell on her sister she noted that the redhead didn’t seem as at ease as before, ‘everything okay Lil?’ ‘Fine,’ Lily said stiffly as she started to skim through the pages of her book.’ ‘Lil?’ Daisy said raising an eyebrow which made the other girls look at her. ‘Alice and I split up,’ she said, ‘and when I was in one of the aisles I heard talking.’ ‘Who?’ Marlene asked though the tug in Daisy’s stomach caused an idea to ping to her brain. ‘Let me guess. Sev and co,’ she said with a scowl. Lily nodded. ‘What were they saying?’ Alice asked. ‘Something about…an attack,’ Lily said warily, ‘I don’t know what but it sounded like they meant here.’ ‘In school!?!’ Daisy said in a near screech which made several heads turn around and look at her. ‘Sssh!’ Lily chastised. ‘Lil this is a big deal!’ Daisy said. ‘Exactly which is why I think the best way to deal with it is to go and tell McGonagall-’
Lily started but she didn’t even finish her sentence before Daisy was up and striding back past the rows and rows of bookshelves. She strutted down the aisle turning her head from left to right to see if they were around until she heard several male voices up ahead. Marlene was behind her in a flash, coming with her silently, whilst Alice and Lily stood at the end of the aisle beckoning them to come back as they carried their hurriedly gathered belongings in their arms.
‘Dais!’ Lily said in a hushed whisper but Daisy didn’t turn around. Instead, she stood flat against the end of the shelf and listened. They were in the last row of bookshelves, the row that backed onto the restricted section and as she peeked around she could see them gathered around a dusty old book. Snape was sitting down, thumbing through it as he pointed out certain elements as McNair, Crouch and Regulus stood behind him speaking to him in hushed whispers.
‘What if we double the ingredients?’ McNair said, ‘that’ll make it happen quicker right?’ ‘It doesn’t work like that,’ Snape said with an air of derision. ‘A month is a long time,’ Regulus said. ‘A month longer than any of those Mudbloods deserve,’ Crouch said. Daisy watched as Snape’s face flickered with unsureness before returning to a neutral expression. ‘I can’t make the potion work any quicker,’ he said, ‘it’s just going to have to be next month.’ ‘Unless we think of something else,’ McNair said. ‘Yeah well you’ve not been very able in that department have you,’ Snape said coolly. It was clear the other boy was irritating him though Daisy didn’t know why. She couldn’t piece together what they were planning. Crouch turned towards McNair and spoke, putting his back to her which made her unable to hear what they were saying. She moved an inch trying to hear more but as she did she knocked a book that had been perched on the edge of the desk off making it clatter onto the floor. Within a nanosecond she and Marlene moved out of the way and down a couple of rows, loitering as if they were looking for something, as the boys appeared at the end of the aisle.
They didn’t look up not until Barty Crouch was standing before them, his three friends behind him watching Daisy carefully. ‘Don’t they teach Mudbloods any manners?’ Crouch asked with a sneer as he looked down at Daisy. Daisy straightened up, putting the book she had been pretending to read down as she turned to face the blond-haired boy and folded her arms across her chest. ‘Excuse me?’ she said. ‘Are you going to pretend you weren’t spying on us?’ he asked. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about,’ Daisy said, ‘me and Mar have been revising.’ ‘Right,’ Snape scoffed. ‘Funnily enough Snivellus some of us do have friends to hang around and study with,’ Marlene said standing up straighter as if providing some solidarity with her friend. ‘I was laughing at the idea of you to doing some school work,’ he said snidely. ‘Weren’t you?’ Daisy said making his black beady eyes fall on her, ‘or were you doing something extracurricular? I mean I’m sure we’d all love to know.’ ‘I bet,’ Regulus said, ‘though I thought the only extracurriculars you were interested in involved my brother sticking his tongue down your throat.’ ‘Funny,’ Marlene said, eyeing Regulus from head to toe with disgust. ‘It was one of yours as well right?’ Regulus replied with a smarmy smile, ‘well until he dumped you.’ ‘Either way, your brother has very little taste,’ Barty sneered. ‘Well there’s a black sheep in every family,’ Regulus said. ‘Yeah, yeah, well we never claimed to be as important as you,’ Daisy said blowing past whatever digs they were making about Sirius, her and Marlene, ‘so how about you tell us just how clever you are huh? Share with the class what clever boys you are to have cooked up whatever it is you’re thinking of.’ ‘Oh, you’ll know,’ Barty said with a cruel smile, ‘soon enough.’
And without another word the four of them strode past Daisy and Marlene down the aisle, shoving past Alice and Lily as they got to the end. Once they were out of sight Lily and Alice rushed to them, appearing at their side immediately bringing with them a series of rapid-fire questions Daisy couldn’t keep up with. ‘What did they say?’ Lily asked, ‘I couldn’t hear everything.’ ‘Did you see what they were looking at?’ Alice followed. ‘Is it bad? Do you think we should get the boys?’ Lily said nervously. ‘Did you see the name of the book?’ Marlene asked. Daisy shook her head. ‘What about McGonagall?’ Lily continued looking frightened. Daisy sighed and shook her head. ‘No teachers,’ she said. ‘Dais this is serious!’ Lily chastised. ‘Exactly! And we’ve got half a tale,’ Daisy said resting back against a bookshelf, ‘look if we go to McGonagall now what are we going to say?’ ‘That those boys are up to something! Something dangerous!’ Lily said shrilly. ‘And what are they up to Lil?’ Daisy asked, ‘do you know?’ ‘Well…' Lily started looking at her friends for help. Marlene shrugged and Alice bit her lip. ‘Exactly. Whatever they’re planning isn’t good but I heard enough. Whatever they’re planning takes time and they’ve not even started yet,’ Daisy explained. ‘So what we wait for them to be ready to do whatever it is?’ Lily scoffed. ‘No,’ Daisy said, ‘I’m just saying I heard them mention it takes a month. In that time we can dig around and try and find out exactly what they’re up to.’ ‘Like they’re going to let us near them now,’ Alice said. ‘We’ll find a way. Once we tell the boys we can have a proper think,’ Daisy said reassuringly. Lily continued to watch her nervously. ‘And then what? Go in all guns blazing? Get yourself hurt like however many times before?!’ her sister said. Daisy’s heart clenched in her chest. Genuine worry was splattered all across her sister’s features, the same type of look she had only seen once before when Daisy had been injured in the shrieking shack.
‘No,’ Daisy said calmly, ‘once we’ve got enough proof we’ll go to McGonagall. Bloody hell even Dumbledore if we have to.’ ‘I don’t see why not now,’ Lily said. ‘Because what are we going to say? Oh by the way I think these slimy gits are up to something? That’ll never fly. She’ll either ignore it because we’ve no proof or ignore it because we’ve had issues with them before. The teachers aren’t ready to listen yet. They’re too afraid of causing mass panic,’ Daisy said. ‘I think we should panic about this,’ Alice said. ‘Me too,’ Lily said. ‘We are,’ Daisy said, ‘but panicking and being rash are two different things. Please can we just give it a minute? Then if it fails we’ll do it your way.’ ‘And if someone gets hurt?’ Lily asked. ‘We’re not going to let it get that far,’ Daisy said trying to convey the severity on her face. She looked at each of the girls waiting for them to answer her. Alice nodded meekly followed by Marlene who said, ‘and if it does then I think we’ve got another twenty students amped for a fight right?’ ‘Right,’ Daisy smiled before looking at her twin once more. Lily still seemed nervous and was chewing on her lip as if she was trying to chew it off. When she caught Daisy staring at her she sighed and then nodded, ‘fine. But you’re only having three weeks. Then we’re telling McGonagall.’ ‘Deal.’
✵✵✵
Daisy was quiet when she slipped up the boy's staircase. After the encounter in the library, they had come back to the common room to find it deserted. The boys were down at the Quidditch pitch so they had some time to kill before they could share their new revelation. Lily had insisted on continuing to revise, in order to help her clear her mind, though the common room was a lot noisier and there were too many distractions for Daisy to handle. Eventually, she told them she was headed to bed though it wasn’t too late. Lily had looked a little miffed that her twin was leaving her but she had nodded in agreement and watched Daisy disappear towards the dormitories. Daisy didn’t go to her own room though. Instead, she crept quietly up into the boy's dorm room and slipped inside.
Since she no longer lived with them it had been a while since she had been inside though it looked the same as always. James’ belongings were strewn around his bed and table until they reached a distinct line where Remus’ quarter of the room began. His things were arranged neatly and tidied away, and his bed was made instead of looking like it was freshly slept in. Peter’s stuff was closest to the door though it looked tidy she knew everything had been pushed into places it couldn’t be seen. As she moseyed through the room she looked at Sirius’ space. It wasn’t extravagantly neat like Remus’ or a warzone like James's but instead a distinct mix of the two. The walls around his bed boasted posters of muggle rock bands and a football team Daisy was sure he’d never seen play. She moved to sit on his bed looking at his bedside table which held a couple of books, a small lamp, and then a picture she hadn’t seen before. It was of him and the boys. She didn’t know who had taken it but they looked distinctly younger, fresh-faced and mischievous. They were sitting somewhere on school grounds, their uniforms slackened as if it was the end of the day or even the end of term.
Sadness flooded through her. That’s what life should be like. They should be carefree and unbothered. They should be able to take pictures with their friends at school. They shouldn’t have to worry about attacks on the outside or fighting with their own classmates. It wasn’t fair. As Daisy thought about that she started to spiral. For the most part of the last few days she’d been putting on a brave face so her sister wouldn’t fall apart. She’d been acting like she knew what she was doing when she was just as clueless as the rest of them. That was why she’d come to Sirius’ room and not her own. She wanted to see him. She wanted him to tell her everything was going to be alright and that they were going to win whatever was coming. She wanted comfort. And that’s what he was to her. For a moment she pitied Marlene because at that moment she realised that her friend had never seen the side of her boyfriend that she had. The one that was always there no matter what.
Once the tears stopped flowing she wiped her face on the corner of her shirt and sighed. Sirius still hadn’t appeared but the thought of heading back to her own room and actually going to bed didn’t seem too appealing. Instead, she fished about in his drawers for something to wear. She found a band t-shirt and slipped it on quickly before realising that he didn’t have anything else that would suffice. Not wanting to nosy through her friend's wardrobes she quickly slipped off her pants and threw them on the back of a chair before she climbed into his bed. She could still smell him on the pillow, a woodsy sweet scent that made her smile. She lay there for a moment thinking of him before she closed her eyes and fell into a slight slumber.
Her attention was caught though when she heard a bang that made her eyes fly open as she found Sirius entering the room. He looked cold to the touch, his ears, nose and cheeks tinged with pink and his hair dampened from the rain. He only seemed to notice she was there after a minute.
‘Dais?’ he said coming towards her and dumping his jacket on the floor by the bed. Daisy smiled and pushed up off the bed until she was sitting, allowing him to sit beside her and place a chaste and cold kiss on her lips. ‘You’re freezing,’ she shivered pulling back. ‘Yeah because I’ve been shivering my bollocks off watching James try and perfect a new tactic,’ he said with a smile, ‘not lying in my bed. Speaking of why are you in my bed?’ ‘Sirius Black are you telling me you don’t want me in your bed?’ she asked with a smirk pushing herself up further, ‘because I’ll gladly go.’ ‘No, no, don’t bother,’ Sirius said grabbing her arm as she attempted to climb out over the bedclothes, ‘I’m very happy you are.’ ‘Good to know,’ she said. ‘But I know if you are lying in my bed instead of sitting downstairs with everyone something’s the matter. So spill,’ he said watching her expectantly.
‘Something happened,’ she said, ‘in the library.’ ‘I thought Lily seemed upset,’ he frowned, ‘she said she was waiting for James and the others though.’ ‘Well they need to know too but I’m sure someone will fill them in,’ Daisy said biting her lip. ‘Okay so is this just general panic stuff or do I need to be working on my alibi for McGonagall for when I do something I shouldn’t to whoever's upset you,’ Sirius joked though there was an edge of seriousness to it that Daisy didn’t miss. ‘It was Regulus,’ she said. ‘What’s he done now?’ Sirius said through gritted teeth. ‘Nothing yet,’ Daisy said, ‘well it’s not just him. The others were there too.’ ‘Others?’ Sirius asked. ‘Crouch, McNair…Snape,’ Daisy said. Sirius exhaled tightly through his nose and shook his head. ‘Nice to know Snivellys found friends to fall back on eh?’ he said, ‘so what did they do.’ ‘Lily overheard them talking. About something they're going to do. Now she didn’t hear much but she said it sounded like something about an attack. So I went to listen in,’ Daisy said looking at him unsure before she added, ‘and they caught me.’ ‘They caught you eavesdropping? Dais, are you trying to put a target on yourself?’ he sighed pulling his hand off her knee from where it had been resting so he could pinch the bridge of his nose. ‘I didn’t mean to get caught! Besides they don’t even have any real proof I was listening in they didn’t catch me red-handed,’ Daisy protested. ‘So then what happened?’ ‘They wasted no time in boasting about how ‘we’ll know soon enough’ about whatever it is they’re planning,’ she said. ‘And what are they planning?’ Sirius asked. ‘I don’t know that yet. I couldn’t hear well enough-‘ ‘So you risked yourself for no information?!’ Sirius baulked, ‘Dais-‘ ‘Well, what was I supposed to do? Ignore it and pretend like they're not up to something?!’ she snapped. Sirius frowned and placed his hand back on her blanket-covered thigh as she continued, ‘and anyway what I did hear was enough for now. They’re plotting something that takes a month. We’ve got a month to figure out whatever it is and let Dumbledore know.’ ‘Right. Well at least that’s something,’ Sirius sighed. ‘Or am I not allowed to help with that either?’ Daisy said coolly making Sirius sigh. ‘Sorry,’ he said, ‘they just make me nervous that’s all.’ ‘I know but whether we get involved or not they're going to be doing whatever it is. I’d rather fight it than let something happen that we could’ve stopped.’ ‘I get that,’ Sirius said, ‘just promise me next time you’ll do it with a little more forethought?’ ‘Like you and James never go in all guns blazing,’ she smirked. ‘Exactly,’ he said pushing a strand of hair off her face, ‘can’t have two nutters in this relationship.’ ‘So I’m your level head?’ she said, ‘somehow I don’t think that’s possible.’ ‘Maybe we’ll just have to be each other’s,’ Sirius smiled. Daisy nodded and leaned in to kiss him deeply. He received it well and deepened it until they were making out and then he was pushing her back onto the bed and climbing under the covers himself.
As his hand ghosted down her body he shivered when he noticed that where he expected pants to be was just her bare skin. He could feel his jeans becoming tighter, more so as she rolled him onto his back and leaned down to kiss him. His hands skimmed around her hips, his thumbs ghosting along her stomach as he held her steady. He could feel himself getting excited even more so as she shifted her hips against him causing his jeans to create the friction he longed for but before he could move any further she pulled back, placing her hands on his chest. She smirked at him as she looked down at him. His lips were puffy from kissing her and his wet hair splayed across the pillow haphazardly.
‘You know me and Marlene had a good talk tonight,’ Daisy said. ‘Oh yeah?’ Sirius said though at that moment he couldn’t care less about whatever the pair of them had been talking about. As he went to continue kissing her though she pushed him back down. ‘About you actually,’ she said. ‘Oh,’ Sirius said his excitement fading away. This was not where he longed for his night to be headed and Daisy had a twinkle in her eye that she was up to something. ‘She had a lot to say about you,’ she said, ‘I mean it wasn’t all complimentary.’ ‘Dais,’ he grumbled. ‘She said you lied to me,’ Daisy said. Sirius’ eyes went wide, ‘lied about what?’ ‘When you spent Christmas with me in the castle. She said you were meant to be going home,’ Daisy said. ‘I was. I changed my mind,’ Sirius said nonchalantly. ‘When?’ Daisy asked. ‘When what?’ Sirius asked, gripping her hip a little tighter and sweeping his thumb over her skin again hoping the new line of goosebumps he had created would be enough to put her back to his way of thinking. ‘When did you change your mind?’ Daisy said simply her finger trailing along his chin, ‘and don’t tell any porkies.’ ‘When you said you couldn’t go home,’ Sirius said simply. ‘Why?’ Daisy asked. ‘Why do you think?’ Sirius asked looking at her as if it were obvious. ‘Weren’t you with Marlene?’ she asked. In the same way she had never discussed this part of their past with her best friend, she had also never broached the subject with Sirius. ‘No,’ he said, ‘well, not after that…I split up with her the morning after.’ ‘That’s a bit mean,’ Daisy said making Sirius laugh. ‘What would you rather I do stay with her and be in love with you?’ Sirius asked making her pout. She supposed he had a point. Neither of them wanted to hurt Marlene but in his actions he had. Just dropping her on a whim like that was a little callous. And though she loved him entirely he couldn’t help but think that non-love-struck Daisy, Marlene’s best friend, wouldn’t have taken that fact so lightly. So, she decided to change tact and avenge her friend.
‘She said you didn’t care about her the way you care about me,’ Daisy said, ‘is that true?’ ‘Of course, it's true. I mean I liked her and all but Daisy I love you,’ he said. ‘You care a lot about me huh Sirius?’ she said grinding her hips down on him making him groan, ‘I can feel that you do.’ ‘Dais,’ he grumbled, ‘come on you’re not being fair-‘ ‘No I’m not,’ she giggled and after a quick kiss on his nose she clambered off him and skipped towards the bathroom. ‘Dais! Daisy come back here!’ he shouted, ‘what are you doing!?’ ‘Avenging a friend!’ Daisy giggled before she disappeared into the bathroom and behind the now-closed door. Just as she did the door swung open and James entered.
‘What are you doing in bed like that?’ he asked as Sirius grumbled and pushed himself so he was sitting in bed. ‘Not what I wanted,’ Sirius grumbled. James moved into the room and sat down on his bed, pulling his socks and shoes off as he looked towards Sirius and said, ‘eh?’ ‘Nothing,’ Sirius grumbled and though he was acutely aware of his little problem under the covers he couldn’t help but smile. Daisy had managed to take their minds off impending doom in a matter of minutes even if it was at his expense. He didn’t care though because as they say, paybacks a bitch.

Curtain Call
Act one, scene one
Sirius finds him with his head in his hands, back against the brick wall of the information and technology building. He stops for a moment, wondering if he should go over there—ask what’s wrong, or offer assistance—then decides against it.
He is Sirius Black, and Sirius Black does not help other people.
Not anymore.
So he continues on with his day. He walks past the crying boy into the theatre building, pausing by the bulletin board to pull a phone number slip from the bottom of a flyer that advertises free physics tutoring. It tears off at the area code.
Great—just what this day needs.
It gets significantly worse when he pushes through the stage door and bumps into Danya, who’s lurking behind the wings, black Abbey Road shirt blending in with the curtains. She smiles at him brightly.
“Hi, Sirius,” she says. “I was just leaving. I could wait up, if you want—fancy getting lunch together?”
There is exactly one good thing about Danya Lent, and that is the fact that she doesn’t giggle, or tuck her hair behind her ear, or look up at him through her eyelashes. She talks to him like he’s a regular person, not some sort of movie star. She’s not just attracted to his looks—she genuinely likes him.
But Sirius just broke up with Remus. He’s not looking for a relationship. And Danya isn’t the kind of person he’d be interested in dating, anyway. She reminds him too much of James.
“Sorry, Dan,” Sirius tells her, glancing towards where Professor Fischer is sitting at the piano centre stage. “I’ll probably be here for a while; I don’t want to keep you waiting.”
Make that two good things about her—she can take a hint. Danya just nods and grins. “All right. I’ll see you around, I guess!”
And then she’s gone.
Sirius clears his throat before approaching the professor, startling the older man out of whatever trance he’s in. Fischer’s eyebrows shoot up comically when he sees Sirius, and he pats the spot next to him invitingly.
Sirius steps forward, sliding onto the piano bench. He absentmindedly plucks a note—D#, he thinks, but it’s been years since he quit piano lessons—and waits.
“I was quite impressed by your performance yesterday,” Fischer says, and Sirius’s heart sinks. Professor Fischer throws around words of praise like they’re buy-one-get-two-free, and ‘quite impressed’ does not fall high on the sliding scale of compliments.
“Thank you, sir,” he says anyway, because he knows better than to say anything else.
But apparently the professor isn’t done yet. “I had been wondering,” he begins, fingers dancing over the keys, yet never making a sound, “Whether you’d given any thought to that course I suggested.”
“What, the creative writing one?” Sirius’s voice, though he tries hard for it not to, gives away his surprise. He’d assumed that Fischer had been recommending the free creative writing seminar to everyone in his class, not him specifically. He’s never had a way with words—not ones that weren’t already scripted out for him, at least.
“Yes, that one. It’s not like most of the courses we offer here—it’s led entirely by alumni of the university, and most of them are very good writers. I think it would be good for you.”
Now Sirius is intrigued. “In what way?”
“You’e an incredible actor, Mr. Black, but what you struggle with is finding the purpose behind the words.”
(Sirius thinks he has purpose down to a science, but he’s not about to say that to Professor Fischer.)
“Oh, sure, you know what the characters are feeling and why. You have a way with the people you play. But what you lack is the concept of an author.
“I’ve had an eye on you for a while, and what I’ve found is this: if Eloise is walking down the street, you know why she is walking down the street. But you do not know why the person writing the script made the conscious choice to have her walk down the street. You get so caught up in the fiction that you forget it is based in fact. Do you understand this?”
Professor Fischer’s accent gets more pronounced the more passionate he is, and right now he sounds as if he would be right at home on the streets of Berlin. Sirius nods slowly.
“I think I get it,” he says. “I need to know what goes into the making of a story before I can make the story come alive.”
For this he gets a smile. “Four o’clock on Wednesdays in the Rogers lecture room. You’ll be there?”
“Yeah. Yeah, I will.”
***
And, sure enough, Wednesday afternoon finds Sirius standing in the middle of a hallway, wondering where the hell the Rogers lecture room is. He checks his watch—4 minutes to go. He’s glad he got there early, but at this rate, it won’t make much of a difference.
He contemplates just leaving. He didn’t sign up for the class or anything (wait, was he supposed to?) and it’s not like there would be roll call or anything anyway. But he trusts Professor Fischer, and at least this seminar is something to do that isn’t scrolling through his old texts with Remus and crying.
When someone bumps into him, he turns around. It’s a girl with shoulder-length auburn hair and a lip ring. Her eyes are green—piercingly so—and he opens his mouth and closes it again a few times trying to remember what he was going to say.
At first, he thinks oh, fuck, we’re back to being flusted around pretty girls. Wonderful. But then he realizes that while she’s attractive, sure, from an objective point of view, he’s not really attracted to her.
He’s actually a little bit scared of her. No, scratch that, very scared of her. Maybe it has something to do with the vicious glare she’s sending him.
“Um,” he says, finally. “Sorry. Do you by any chance know where the Rogers lecture room is?”
She purses her lips and nods, striding past him further down the hall. After a moment, he follows her to the elevator and waits as she jabs aggressively at the up button. There’s a long, awkward silence while the elevator gets to their floor, broken only by the loud ding when it arrives.
The ride up between floors is even more painful, if that’s possible. Sirius tries to occupy himself by looking at the ceiling, which is mirrored, so he looks at the wall instead. It’s patterned like a booth in some sort of high-class restaurant—greenish, with vaguely paisley-shaped blotches here and there.
Finally, they arrive at a hallway identical to the one they came from. The walls are the same off-white; the floors have the same grey carpeting. If he didn’t know better, Sirius would say they hadn’t moved at all.
The girl walks out, the soles of her pink high-tops squeaking until she’s out of the elevator and into the hall. She turns around.
“Well, come on, then,” she tells him, voice not at all how he had expected. It’s the first time he’s heard her speak, and he’s surprised at the eastern accent. Nova Scotia, he guesses, or New Bruinswick. He nods wordlessly.
He finds himself being led into a small lecture room—smaller than any he’s ever been in, anyway—with fifteen or so other students milling around, chatting and laughing. On the whiteboard at the front of the room, someone’s written Glendale A.L.L. Creative Writing Seminar.
Looking left, then right, and finding that his red-haired saviour has vanished into the crowd, he sits down at the very back of the room. He has around thirty seconds of awkwardly waiting for something to happen before there’s a shout of “Sit down and shut up!” from somewhere near the front.
When the smoke clears—or, if he abandons the metaphors, everyone else has chosen a seat and he can actually see who’s speaking—it turns out the person addressing the room is the same girl who led him there. She’s smiling, now, unlike when she was with him, and her hands are outstretched in front of her.
“Hi, everyone! Welcome to the A.L.L., or Alumni-Led Lectures, creative writing seminar—free, because we know you’re university students and you therefore have no money.” This gets a ripple of laughter from the seated students, and her shoulders rise a little more. Sirius knows why; positive audience feedback does the same thing to him. “I’m Lily Evans, and I graduated from University of Glenrow last year with a bachelor’s in Engligh lit. I’m going to be your main instructor for the next few months. Here with me to help me out, because I wouldn’t be able to do it on my own, is my good friend John Lupin.”
A boy, tall and lanky, peels himself away from the wall and goes to stand beside her. She says something else, but Sirius doesn’t hear it, because his eyes are fixed on her companion and his ears are ringing.
Whatever Lily says, that boy’s name isn’t John.
It’s Remus.
And he broke up with Sirius two weeks ago.

“Little help, sugar?”
Sirius stood outside her dorm room, balancing a few boxes of snacks and chocolate frogs in his hands. A bright smile sported on his face and a rose hung between his teeth. (Y/N)'s cheeks had never heated up so quickly.
What was he thinking, standing outside her dorm like some guy from those muggle movies?!
“Oh— Merlin, Sirius! My friends can see you!” She hissed, an embarrassment smile threatened to break out on her face from her boyfriend's unabashed behaviour. She snatched the rose from between his teeth, then pressing her hands against his chest, she pushed him away from the entrance, stepping out with him.
“What? It's the weekend!” He grinned, obviously pleased with her reaction.
The other girls' giggles were audible as she closed the door behind her.
Sirius wrapped his arms around her and looked down at her. He seemed to admire her bashful smile as her hands played with the lapels of his collar.
“Why'd you do that?” She groaned and buried her face in his shirt, “They're going to tease me for the next two weeks for that!”
Sirius kissed the top of her head gingerly and tightened his arms around her before replying.
“Well, if you want, we can put on a better show so it's too embarrassing to talk about.”
“Sirius!”

Chapter Eight: Muggle Films and Magical Secrets
Penny had her knees drawn up under her chin, her arms wrapped around her shins, turned slightly toward Sirius as though she planned to hide behind him at any moment. Her eyes, however, were glued to the TV as the menacing sounds of a tuba played behind an underwater scene, where a bloke named Matt Hooper was inside of what he’d called an anti-shark cage. Sirius’ attention was split between the movie they were watching, and Penny, the latter being of far more interest to him if he were being honest. It wasn’t that Jaws hadn’t been engaging, but rather that he preferred to watch her reaction to a film she’d claimed she had seen a hundred times, and yet was watching as though it were the first time. It was amusing and rather charming.
He had loved The Goonies, which had been the first muggle film they’d watched. The group of four friends had reminded him so painfully of he and his friends that for a moment, he wondered if whoever wrote it had gone to Hogwarts with them. For a brief moment he had even wondered how different their lives would’ve been had they found themselves looking for ancient treasure instead of fighting a brutal war. The wonder and sense of adventure in the eyes of Mikey and his friends had left their own not long after they’d finished school.
Benjy Fenwick. That had been the death that had changed everything for him. It was the moment Sirius realized just how fragile life was, and how likely it was for any of them to lose it at any moment.
Afterwards, Penny insisted that he might likewise enjoy Jaws, a film about a giant shark terrorizing a small island off the coast of America. Apparently it was one that she’d seen as a small child.
“Oh dear God!” she exclaimed as the large shark swam up behind Hooper in the cage, crashing into it.
“I thought you said you’ve seen this over a hundred times,” he mused, the corners of his lips curled slightly.
“I have, but it gets me every time,” she answered without moving her eyes from the screen. “This was the movie that got me to stop taking baths, you know.”
His smirk grew more pronounced. “Is that so?”
“Yeah,” she said. “Don’t ask me why, but I was convinced that the shark would somehow come up from the drain and eat me whole — tub and all.”
His brows shot up above his eyes. “You thought…”
“I was seven,” she argued, finally looking over at him. “I know it doesn’t make any sense.”
Sirius snorted softly. “When I was seven, I thought that the stars were fairies who flew too high and got stuck to the night sky.”
Penny smiled. “That’s kinda cute. Wait, are there really fairies?”
“Oh yes,” he answered. “They aren’t as magical as they sound. Mostly they’re used for decoration.”
Her brows furrowed. “Decoration?”
“Mhm, they’re quite vain you see. They love being put on display, spend most of their time grooming themselves.”
“Huh.” She blinked and then glanced at the screen. “Oh! This is the best part, watch.”
Just when Sirius was near certain that shark would kill everyone aboard the Orca, Chief Brody began to strike him with a large, heavy tank, throwing it into the animal's mouth. The chief began to climb out of the cabin, a long, makeshift spear in his hand.
“Does he mean to kill that shark with just a stick?” Sirius asked incredulously, preparing himself for a convoluted and thus disappointing ending.
“No, he has the rifle, see it?” she replied, pointing at the screen.
“Rifle… is that some other sort of weapon?”
“Yeah, it shoots out these little things called bullets. They’re just a bigger version of that smaller one he had earlier… sort of… I don’t know, I’m not really a gun person.”
Sirius tilted his head to one side as he watched the main character, Brody was his name, shoot at the shark, who apparently was keen to bite down on the air tank in its mouth. “What’s he doing then? He’s already tried to use a gun.”
“He’s not going for the shark this time,” she answered with a knowing grin, adding in a much quieter voice, “He’s going for the tank. Smile, you son of a bitch!”
Sirius jolted slightly as an explosion was shown on screen, water bursting into the air as Brody rejoiced. Leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees, he watched as the water turned a dark shade of red, the half-blown shark sinking to the bottom.
“I love that part,” Penny said just as Hooper had resurfaced.
“Oh, thank Merlin. I like him,” Sirius said as he once again leaned back in his seat.
“Me too,” she replied. “I almost became an oceanographer because of Matt Hooper.”
Looking over at her, Sirius turned slightly toward her and asked, “What did make you want to study witchcraft?”
Penny shrugged as she hit a button on the remote, and the tape slid out of the VCR. “I don’t know. I guess I’ve always been fascinated by people’s fascination with it. I find it interesting how it can influence a society for good or bad, mostly bad. At least historically. Did you know in the US in 1692 they burned women just for being suspected of being witches? No evidence, just a suspicion. Back then all it took was some Puritan’s wife to point a finger in your direction and just like that, you were burned at the stake.”
Sirius shook his head. “No, I didn’t know that. We don’t really learn about the witches and wizards in America. But it sounds horrifying.”
“I always assumed it was the Puritan’s obsession with their misogynistic views on women, mixed with citizens exerting revenge on their neighbors for one thing or another,” she mumbled, her brows slowly forming a crease between them. “Are there wizards and witches in the States?”
Sirius nodded. “Yes, of course. Our kind are everywhere, in all parts of the world.”
“You make it sound like you guys are a different species,” she replied as her lips formed a smile.
“We aren’t,” he said, smiling back. “We just have different traits, I suppose. It’s not very different from having dark hair or light hair, brown eyes or blue eyes.”
“And you just… live among us? How do you keep your magic secret?” she asked. “I mean, I can’t imagine becoming a garbage collector when you can just use magic to make trash disappear.”
“Some of us live among you, but for the most part our world is separate from yours. Most wizarding families live and work in our world. Very few work with muggles, and most only by necessity.”
She turned to sit cross-legged, facing him. “You have your own world?”
“In a sense,” he answered. “It’s still in this world, it’s just hidden.”
“Where?”
Tilting his head, Sirius narrowed his eyes as a smirk fell on his lips, which earned a small laugh from Penny.
“Well, okay then, can you at least tell me what it's like?”
Shifting his eyes to the coffee table, he thought about how he could explain the wizarding world to someone who had never seen it. There was really only one word that came to mind, “Magical.”
Her eyes still watched him as though she was waiting for him to expand on that idea, and though in any other circumstance he’d had never entertained the notion of telling a muggle about its existence, he almost relished in sharing it with her. Perhaps because of her genuine interest, or perhaps he actually did trust her to keep it secret, but as he continued, he allowed himself to become immersed in the memories that seemed so far away.
“There’s this village called Hogsmeade, it’s the only all-wizarding village in Britain. It’s one of the oldest communities in the wizarding world, not very far from Hogwarts. It’s surrounded by the most beautiful mountains and caves. We used to go there on the weekends sometimes. There are shops and cafes, and enchanted candles that hang in the trees during the holidays. And when it snows, it looks like a place that’s just fallen out of a storybook.”
“Sounds amazing,” she replied.
“It’s lovely,” he agreed. “Our favorite was to go to Zonko’s Joke Shop, where we would stock up on various items we could use to play jokes on the First and Second year students. Then we would go to Honeydukes and have a butterbeer.”
Penny’s brow arched in interest. “Butterbeer? Like butterscotch beer?”
Sirius shrugged. “I’m not sure what beer is, but yes, it’s butterscotch flavored.”
“Beer is an alcoholic drink. In London it’s called a pint.”
“Ah yes, of course. It has some alcohol, but not very much. You can’t get pissed on it.”
“That sounds good.”
“It’s delicious. Especially on a cold day, they serve it hot.” He licked his lips, trying to remember the flavor on his taste buds, but it had been far too long. He could only faintly remember what it smelled like. “What about you?” he asked, turning his eyes toward her.
“Me? I grew up in Westport, Connecticut,” she replied as though there was no comparing it to the wizarding world. “We have museums and parks, beaches… shopping, if you’re into that sort of thing. I think the biggest thing to happen there was when Paul Newman moved to our town back in the 60s. He opened up a playhouse that does pretty well.”
“Who is Paul Newman?”
“He’s an actor. Or was… I think he’s retired.”
Sirius nodded once. “Sounds lovely.”
“I guess,” she chuckled.
“What brought you to Britain?” he asked.
“School, mostly… but I was also pretty desperate to leave. My parents are great, but they can be a bit…” She paused to think of the right word, “overbearing sometimes.”
Sirius nodded. “You did mention that before.”
“I did?” she asked, her brows knitting briefly. “Oh yeah.” She laughed under her breath. “I keep forgetting you’re a dog. I mean you… you know, you turn into one.”
“Right,” he answered with a smirk.
“How do you do that anyway?”
“It’s a very complicated and dangerous spell. It took us two years to manage it.”
“It’s that complicated?” Penny asked in somewhat surprise.
Sirius nodded. “Well,” he reconsidered. “Not necessarily, but there are some things needed that are outside of your control and take a long time to find. Such as a lightning storm. That alone could take years.”
“Do you get to pick your animal?”
He smiled at her. “No.”
“So, what? Does it go off your —”
“I shouldn’t be telling you any of this,” he reminded her gently. The small smile was still on his face, but he feared telling her too much could put her in even more danger than he already had.
“Well, it’s a little late for that. Sucks for you that I’m a history major,” she teased. “Come on, this is so fascinating, and when will I ever have a chance to ask a real wizard questions ever again? Probably never, I’m pretty boring. Don’t get out much.”
Snorting to himself, Sirius ran a hand through his hair with a sigh. “What animal you can become often has much to do with one’s personality.”
“Huh… interesting,” Penny mumbled. “I wonder what animal I’d turn into.”
“I’m not sure,” he replied. “I don’t know you that well, but if I were to guess, likely something intelligent, kind… beautiful.”
Her cheeks turned a lovely shade of pink and a shy smile stretched on her lips as silence settled between them. If this were an entirely different situation where he wasn’t a wanted wizard and Harry wasn’t in danger, he might’ve followed up with another flirtatious comment. He might’ve even tried to kiss her. But that nagging voice in the back of his mind — which strangely sounded quite like James — kept telling him that even flirting with this muggle woman was dangerous, even cruel. The facts remained that he was indeed a wanted wizard, and Harry was in danger, and because of that any connection with Penny would be short-lived. Encouraging their mutual attraction would only end in heartbreak. His own he could handle, but not hers. She had been nothing but kind to him, breaking her heart would be a terrible way of repaying that kindness.
“Another tape?” she suggested. “I have three more.”
Sirius swallowed, glancing at the remaining tapes on the bottom shelf. “Alright.”
“I could make popcorn,” she said as she stood and went to the shelf. “What do you think? Indiana Jones, Casablanca or Back to the Future? Which sounds good to you?”
“I liked The Goonies. Which one of the three is similar?”
“Well, technically none, but the kid who played Data in The Goonies is in Indiana Jones. And it’s also an adventure movie,” she replied.
“Right, let’s have that one then,” he said.
Nodding once, Penny pulled the tape from the shelf and began to put it into the VCR after taking Jaws out. Sirius’ eyes casually scanned the shelves again, Magical Theory and A History of Magic catching his interest once again.
“I wondered,” he said, waiting for her to look back at him before he gestured to the shelf with his chin. “Where did you find those books?”
“Which books?” she asked, looking up at the shelf.
He stood and went over, pulling out the old, tattered copy of A History of Magic and holding it up for her to see. “This one.”
“Oh, that was a gift from my uncle.”
“Your uncle?”
“Yeah.” she replied.
For reasons he wasn’t prepared to dissect, Sirius felt a surge of excitement course through his veins. Was she magical? A squib perhaps or simply a witch who somehow or another had yet to discover her magic?! He shoved aside the fleeting thoughts of her being able to come with him to Scotland and asked, “Is he a blood uncle?”
“No, he’s married to my mom’s brother.”
Right. She was no witch. She just possibly had a wizard who had married into her family.
“I see,” he replied, trying not to sound too disappointed. “Do you know where he got them?”
Penny shrugged slowly. “No clue. He just said he thought I would find them useful for my doctorate program. Are you telling me that’s a real magic book?”
Sirius nodded, holding up the book. “This one I read while I was in first year,” he said before he reached for Magical Theory. “This one, too. You have a few others in that other room as well.”
She cut her eyes to him, her brows furrowed at him. “How do you know what books I have in there?”
“I saw them,” he answered. “When you went out after giving me a bath, I had a look around your flat.”
“You went through my stuff?”
“Not exactly. I just had a look around, that’s all.”
“Okay, but what does that mean? Did you go through my drawers, did you — Oh my God, did you see my underwear?!”
“No! Of course not!” His cheeks grew slightly warm, an unusual feeling for him. “Only what I could see without touching anything, honestly,” he answered, holding up his hands, each still holding a book.
Nodding softly after a moment, she glanced at the books in his hands, gesturing to them. “So those are textbooks.”
“Yes,” he replied. “So are the ones in your study, though they’re more advanced. Ancient Runes Translations is a sixth year book. Did you get those from your uncle as well?”
“Yeah, he gave me five books total after I finished my Masters.”
“What exactly is a Masters?”
“It’s the degree you get before your PhD,” she answered.
“Degree?”
She nodded. “That’s higher education for us muggles. Don’t you guys have something similar? Like school after you leave school?”
“No,” he replied in a chuckle, putting the books back on the shelf. “Not really, at any rate, unless you were a performer of some kind. There was a girl in my year who wanted to be an actor. She went to the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts after sixth year.”
Agatha Winterbourne, Ravenclaw. Sirius could still hear her in the Great Hall during supper, yammering away excitedly at the Ravenclaw table about how she would be leaving Hogwarts at year’s end to follow her dream. He remembered how he would glance between James, Remus and… him, an expression on his face that was some mixture of worry and doubt.
“Oh? Has she been in anything I might have seen? I watch a lot of movies,” Penny answered, smiling.
“Mostly plays… but whether she’s worked since, I haven’t any idea,” he replied. “We were at war by the time I finished school the following year, that left me with little choice but to join the fight to ensure we would have a world to go back to that was worth living in. I wasn’t entirely tuned in to what was going on outside of it.”
“That must’ve been really hard,” she said after a moment.
Sirius bobbed his shoulders, going back to sit on the sofa as he answered, “It was alright. It wasn't the worst thing that was going on at the time.”
“Yeah,” she mumbled. “Well, if you hadn’t been at war, what would you have done?” She went to sit beside him, pulling one leg up onto the sofa.
He had never wondered that before, had never even considered what he might’ve done after leaving Hogwarts. There had been a brief time in his second year when he had entertained being an artist, mainly because he knew that such a profession would offend his mother, who had expected him to continue the family’s name in philanthropy. That all changed around his third year, when there was an anti-muggle attack that killed dozens of innocent people. He had overheard his parents boasting about the Dark Lord’s progress, and it had been from that moment in time that his interests swayed toward helping the opposing side.
“When I was 11, I thought about being an artist,” he said. “But that was mostly me rebelling against my parents. I’m not sure if I wouldn’t have become interested in something else as I got older. Perhaps a dragon keeper. Or a philosopher. Something with a lot of action or that required the use of my clever mind, but not an Auror. Definitely not an Auror. They’re a bit like your muggle police. Far too many rules for my taste.”
She smirked at him, propping her elbow onto the back of the couch and leaning her head on her hand. “So you were a trouble maker.”
He grinned playfully and wagged his brows. “You’ve no idea, love.”
She chuckled softly, and was about to ask him something else when a ring sounded from somewhere behind her. Turning to the end table beside the sofa, she picked up some sort of contraption and held it to her ear. “Hello?”
He could hear another voice, a woman.
“Mom…” Her eyes met Sirius’ as she added, “Hey.”
The woman spoke again, though he couldn’t quite make out what she was saying, but the look on Penny’s face was as though she were smelling a rubbish bin.
“Great,” Penny said, clearly attempting to sound enthusiastic, but failing miserably. “I really don’t have time to —” She rolled her eyes, sighing silently. “Okay.” She listened for a few moments before saying again, “Okay, fine. I’d be…” She grimaced. “Delighted.”
Whatever it was she was agreeing to, Sirius was positive she was far from delighted about it.
“Yep. Okay. I have to go,” Penny said. “Okay, bye.” She placed the object back onto a large cradle and looked back at him, shaking her head gently. “Don’t ask.”
Standing, she made her way into the kitchen and began to rummage through a cupboard out of sight. When she came back into view, she was opening a packet and placing it into the microwave and pressing one of the buttons.
“Do you not get along with your mother?” he asked.
She took a step to lean halfway through the door frame. “I do, I just get annoyed when she tries to set me up. She doesn’t really get me, and… I guess I don’t really get her much.”
“Mm,” Sirius replied.
“I know she loves me,” Penny said as a popping noise began to come from the microwave. “And I know she means well, but I wish she would just understand that dating is the last thing on my mind right now.”
Trying to ignore the twist in his abdomen, Sirius gently cleared his throat. “She’s sending you on a date then?”
“Unfortunately,” Penny groaned, stepping back into the kitchen. “Some friend of hers’ son. Apparently he’s just finishing up his Masters at Oxford. La-di-dah.”
Sirius tried not to let out a bark of laughter. “Maybe she thinks you’ll like him.”
“My mom doesn’t know what I like,” she answered as a longer beep sounded from the microwave. She opened it and pulled something out of another cupboard before she opened the microwave. “She doesn’t get why I chose the topic I did for my Doctorate. She thinks it’s a waste of my time.”
“What’s a Doc —”
“PhD,” she replied, coming back into the sitting room with a large, bright orange bowl and reclaiming her place on the sofa.
“Right.”
“If it were up to her, I’d get married and start popping out babies like a good little factory,” she said, taking a kernel of popcorn from the bowl and eating it. “Nevermind what I want.”
“What do you want?”
Penny sighed, swallowing what was in her mouth before she said, “To learn more. To study this other culture that up until now I didn’t think existed in any tangible way.”
“And do what with it?”
“I don’t know yet,” she answered with a listless smile. “Can’t exactly write a book on it. But something good. Whatever it is I end up doing with all this knowledge, I want it to help people somehow.”
“Perhaps one day you will,” he replied with a warm smile. He glanced down at the bowl. “Are you going to share that then?”
Following his gaze, she smiled and moved closer to him, placing the bowl between them. “So you’ve had popcorn?”
“Have I had popcorn?” he asked in a breathy chuckle. “Of course I have, love, I’m not from another planet.”
Penny snorted bashfully. “Well, it’s good to know there are some things our worlds have in common.”
They stared back at one another for a moment before Penny leaned forward and took up the remote.
“It’s getting late, so this’ll probably be the last movie,” she said. “But maybe tomorrow, I can rent a couple more. We can continue your muggle cinema education.”
He let out a bark of laughter, tossing his head back. “Sure, I’d love that.”
She reached for the lamp on the end table and turned out the light, pressing a button on the remote before she snuggled closer to him.
He shouldn’t have done it. He should have kept his distance. But despite the voice in his mind screaming for him not to move, Sirius lifted his arm and draped it behind her over the back of the sofa.
You bloody prat, groaned James’ voice in his head.

Sirius' Love Language
A/N: it's probably not my best headcanon because I wrote this in so many intervals as my exams are going on, *ignores the glare from my economics books*. It's for @with1love1anu 's headcanon challenge. Congratulations, lovely! I hope you like it.
Pairing: Sirius Black x reader
Warning: fluff. A lot of it.
Summary: how Sirius shows you his love.
Sirius Orion Black
One of the most popular and handsome guys in Hogwarts was whipped for you
And lucky for him, you were also in love with him
I mean how can you resist those dusky grey eyes which appear like night sky
Or that lovely scent of cinnamon mixed with leather, lemons, and mint that dances in the air wherever he goes
Or that smile that makes even Greek gods jealous
Or those cheeky winks that he gave while you both were in potions, facing one another
Okay
In all
You were falling for him
Hard.
And somehow you managed the courage to go to him to ask him out
And just as you approached him
He asked you out
Coincidence?
Maybe.
But yes, you both started dating
And it wasn't easy dating him, yk.
No it wasn't because of those jealous glares you got
You could give more fucks about what a crocodile do in its free time than those stares.
It was difficult dating him because he seemed to recoil from any affection
Yet you were patient and let him get comfortable
And oh boy
It took a few months
But when he got comfortable with you
It was heaven
Sirius isn't good with words
Because obviously he grew up in the most loving house where cruciatus curse never was used as punishments and it never got too bad for him to runaway.
Obviously not.
So yeah
He turned to physical affection
He just had to be holding your hand
If not that
Then cuddling
There is nothing in between
"I am sorry, Minnie, but my healer has told me to hold her hand at all costs or I might just die!"
"And who is your healer, Black?"
"James Potter."
*James stands up and bows dramatically, giving a wink to Sirius before sitting down*
You only roll your eyes with a smile and just hold his hand tighter
After a point the teachers ignored you two
Because at least you made him focus in class
Or tried to.
He just had to press a kiss to your knuckles in every half an hour
And you did the same
Actually more than he did because seeing his smile
That melted your heart and soul and made you feel so warm
So you see the deal is
That Sirius is a legend when it comes to disappearing with James
At first you were like, "they're probably pranking someone."
But nuh-uh
That wasn't the case
They were doing their business
Of candies and snacks
It was completely anonymous and they both started it when they were in their second year
And now it's your seventh year and still nobody knows it
Not even moony or peter
But you caught them when they were sending an owl to deliver the snacks to one or their customers
"guys?"
"oops."
So yeah
They told you about it
And they were mainly doing it because Sirius knew from the starting that he would runaway from his family so they were making money for him
And this boy was a brilliant businessman
They had earned thousands of galleons over the years and they were too good at this
So yeah
You started helping them too
And Sirius was so happy when you helped
He didn't know why
But he just knew that he had to smolder you in kisses
So that night when you slept with him
He had pressed so many tiny kisses on your beautiful face
Because he was just so happy that you're this supportive
"I love you so much."
And that was the first time he said I love you
And you had cried
You never mind him not saying those three exquisite words
Because his everyday actions were enough to scream that he loved you
But he said those words to you?????
And he sorta freaked out
BECAUSE WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING?? WHAT DID I DO???? I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO ALICE WHEN SHE WAS BLABBERING ABOUT A ROMANTIC NOVEL DURING THE LUNCH
But he stopped freaking out and hugged you
And you just sorta tackled him into a hug
And when you stopped crying he asked why did you cry
"because you said I love you to me." 👉🏼👈🏼🥺
And Sirius chuckled and kissed you
Because you're too adorable for your own good
He started saying how much he loved you just a lil
Like just
"love you" *pecks on cheek before giving a smile and sauntering away to his class*
"looking pretty, love."
Because as much as he had a good hold on his language
He just never found right words
But it's fine
His actions yelled out that he loved you
He would make tea for you when you were studying in the evening.
Would definitely make sure you eat as you tell him about a novel you read
Because boi do you get excited
He would take out small amounts of money from his savings from the business and would buy you gifts
And he was happy that you found joy in small things
He knew he is getting a gazillion kisses for getting you that novel you have been wanting to read for months
He would drag along his friends to find the prettiest of flowers for you from the forbidden forest
He would buy you those small rings that don't cost a lot of money but still look pretty
He would notice a lot of things about you over the years and he just knew what to give
A muggle Polaroid camera?
Done.
That sweater would look so pretty on you.
Got it.
You are running low on chocolates?
Lol impossible, he has a business of the very thing.
He would definitely make you sleep with him every night because he sleeps so much better with you
He would always kiss you when he sees you in the room that he walks in
No matter what, that's the law for him
He would cuddle with you every single day
But on Sundays
You guys just cuddled and did nothing else.
Which is also the reason why that you guys stay up on Friday and do all the work and on Saturday he is with his friends and you are with yours
Because on Sundays from the moment you wake up, you need to be in his arms or you might as well kill someone with a fork
I hope that someone is voldy or Peter or Bellatrix
Cause of death: angry girl with a fork 😂
Yeah
So you guys had so many cuddle positions
The spoons, ofc
Him laying on your chest
Him laying on you
And vice versa for both the cases
Sitting on his lap and him wrapping you two in a blanket as you two would talk in front of the fire
He would tell you about his pranks
And you would just make them better
"so after Lucius bullied those first year kids, I wanna put a dungbomb in his goblet"
"charm it to explode with pink glitter."
"THAT'S MY GIRL!"
He also expressed his love by singing to you
You would rest your head on his chest as he would sing to you while playing with your hair
He would pick up the songs that would express his unspoken feelings
And sometimes you will cry too
Because
F E E L S
Obviously Marauders would tease you guys to be so lovey dovey
"Have you charmed my best friend to stick with you, y/n/n?"
*eyeroll* "no, I don't need to follow him around a lost puppy like you do to Evans, James."
Sirius would be wheezing at that one
And he knew you said the pun of the lost puppy delibrately
"I have the best girl in the world, sucks for you tossers."
Everyone eyerolls except for you
You just kiss your boyfriend on his lips
You guys bet that you are the most adorable in the history of Hogwarts
:)
-/-/-/-/-
A/N: I just think that candy business makes sense because obviously Sirius comes from a Slytherin family and one quality that he has adopted is to be resourceful and so that's what he do to get him that gold in his Hogwarts days. And don't worry, he gave the share to James too.
Hope you enjoyed it!

Chapter Three - You Said Forever
Another Love Series Masterlist
Pairing(s): Regulus Black x Fem!Reader, Remus Lupin x Fem!Reader
Song: driver’s license - Olivia Rodrigo
Warnings: Angst, shoddy timeline, swearing, (I think that’s it??).
Word Count: 2.8k
Masterlist
Author’s Note: I made an angst series using sad songs, ofc I had to use driver’s license eventually! Also, although the characters have gotten a bit older, I’m still using Andrew Garfield and Timmy Chalamet as the face claims! I hope y’all enjoy this chapter, it’s a big one!!
(Neither gif is mine, all credit to the creators!)
If the decrepit walls of 12 Grimmauld Place could talk, they would tell the tales of misery and anguish. The house had not seen much happiness since it’s construction, especially during the period Walburga, Orion, and their children inhabited it. It was only following the deaths of all of Sirius’ family that he took up residence there with you when the anguish was displaced with joy, if only for a short period. It’s no wonder that you moved to a cabin in the middle of nowhere with Remus following the events of October 31st.
Standing in the front entry once more, the ghosts haunting the dwelling seemed to be whispering unintelligible warnings against proceeding further into the house. You could hear the shrieking of Walburga’s painting upstairs, a familiar nuisance that had your blood boiling in an instant. Your husband’s arm draped protectively across shoulders as he rubbed soothing circles with his thumb was the only thing keeping you sane at that moment in time.
Through the open door at the end of the hall you could see the face of Sirius Black, the light in his eyes slowly returning as he spots two of his favourite people in the world. He quickly stood, rushing out the door to embrace you both in a warm hug as you dropped your trunks to the floor. He held the both of you close and tight, afraid that should he let go, he would wake up alone in his cell once more.
The Order reuniting was the perfect distraction for both you and your husband, your recent unemployment resulting in a sense of unease in both your minds. Luckily, both Sirius and yourself had inherited enough money that you needn’t worry about working, but the void that your children left when they returned to Hogwarts the following year was certainly hard to fill. Summer break couldn’t come soon enough for any of you.
Towards the end of that summer the Weasleys came to stay, Molly and Arthur bringing their four youngest, meaning that mischief lay just around every corner. About a week after their arrival was when Hermione showed up, the same day that Moody had taken a small group to retrieve Harry from the Dursleys.
Hearing the opening door, you rushed from the kitchen where the meeting had been taking place to see that Arthur had returned with the young girl who he’d picked up from her muggle household.
“ Professor (Y/L/N)!” She smiled, lugging her cart behind her with one hand while the other cradled her ginger cat.
“Oh please, Hermione, I’m not your teacher anymore.” You said. “(Y/N) is fine.” You knew the girl had seen you as a role model, both academically as a skilled teacher but also following the story Harry had detailed to her about how you’d worked for the Order to relay Death Eater secrets to them. You can still remember the slap across the head she’d given Ron after he let her secret slip during class, the young girl embarrassed that you knew how she idolized you.
“The rest of the kids are just upstairs if you want to join them, Ginny will show you to the room you’re sharing. Harry should be getting here in about half an hour, and dinner will be at six-thirty!” You explained, the girl smiling as she carefully let Crookshanks down to the floor before she dragged her case up the stairs behind her.
Returning to the table, you sat in the seat across from your husband as you shared a tight-lipped smile. The two of you had decided that it was probably best to maintain a level of professionalism around your fellow Order members, the pair of you keeping all talk of your relationship outside of the meetings. These gatherings, however, continued to consist of endless bickering over the topics of Harry and Voldemort, the only subtle comfort you’d found during the evening had been Crookshanks crawling upon your lap for a snooze.
“I’m just saying that we can’t risk telling Harry about this, it’ll just be putting him in more danger and we never know who’s listening.” You said. “I mean, look at Pettigrew! He hid in your house for years without anyone knowing! Who knows what he’s shared with ‘You Know Who’!”
“Yes, but there aren’t exactly unregistered animagi running around everywhere, (Y/N).” Sirius remarked.
“Says the unregistered animagus to the other unregistered animagus.” You snapped, glaring at your in-law from across the table.
You forced your mouth shut after that, not wanting to continue bickering with your friends, letting your thoughts wander until Sirius’ comment forced it’s way back to the front of your mind. You weren’t exactly sure as to why it was bothering you so much. Even after the meeting had concluded and you were the last one in the kitchen, baking cookies for the teens to snack on the following days, you couldn’t shake an odd feeling. As if there was something that your subconscious had registered that your conscious mind hadn’t yet comprehended.
It was only when you turned to grab the tinfoil from the cupboard behind you that a cold sweat found your body, your mind finally registering what you’d missed when something caught the corner of your eye. Maybe you hadn’t noticed it because you didn’t want to believe it, or maybe it was that part of you realized just how long it would take for this shock to fully register.
“You must think I’m stupid,” You began, refusing to turn away from the dough you were scooping onto the cookie sheet, “or maybe you’re still just as arrogant as you were in school.”
You didn’t receive a response right away, causing both a wave of relief and disappointment to wash over you at your incorrect suspicion. But that all went away when you heard a shifting sound and the screeching of a chair.
“What gave me away?” A voice called from behind you in a smug tone you’d heard countless times many years ago.
“Oh please, Regulus.” You said, finally working up the courage to turn around as you fought desperately to conceal your emotions. He was older now, crinkles reaching the corners of his eyes, and his previously neat clothes were now battered, torn, and bloodstained, but apart from that he looked just as he did when he walked out the door years ago. “We were married - I know you better than you know yourself.”
He gave a silent chuckle as his smirk became a tiny smile and he looked towards the floor. An uncomfortable silence filled the room as a strong, unnamable tension continued to grow between you. While you expected an explanation, Regulus seemed to have anticipated a much happier reaction from you.
“What, you’re not happy to see me?” Regulus commented, his confusion continuing to build at your indifference to his sudden appearance. “I’m still your husband, you can’t spare me a smile, at the very least?”
That’s when it hit you - he doesn’t know. Regulus, or Crookshanks, rather, hadn’t heard anybody mention that you’d moved on. It must have been some luck or twisted fate that he’d never been in the room when your relationship had been mentioned, which means he also doesn’t know about Teddy. But does he know about Archie and Cassie? Surely he would’ve asked about them immediately if he was aware.
“You’ve been gone for a very long time.” You said, your bitter tone contrasting the quietness of your voice, yet your volume grew with each word until you were shouting. “You abandoned me, how dare you show up now and expect me to welcome you back into my life with open arms. Do you have any idea what I have been through the past sixteen years?! You have no fucking clue exactly what you left me to deal with! And now you sit here with that smug expression, daring to call yourself my husband and expecting me to forgive you for the hell you put me through?!”
Regulus sat there with his mouth opening and closing, the first time you’d ever seen the quick-witted boy speechless. You could see the hurt in his emerald eyes as his mind desperately searching for something, anything to say. But you never got the chance, as the door opening as a third voice filled the room.
“Honey, it’s starting to get late, I think you should come to - dear god.”
Both your and Regulus’ heads snapped towards the over of the voice, only for your eyes to meet your other husband. It didn’t take long for Regulus to process why Lupin was calling you “honey” and exactly where his comment was going, his eyes darting between the two of you over and over again, before a sigh escaped him.
“So that’s why.” He said, leaning further back into his chair and crossing his arms over his chest. “How long was I gone before you and the werewolf started -”
“Don’t!” You bit, probably a bit too loud because that was what finally caught the attention of two sets of ears upstairs. In the long, dark hall, two doors opened and two sets of eyes stared at each other from across the way. The eldest and youngest of the Black men eventually made their way down the stairs together, careful to be quiet as they attempted to discern what the voices in the kitchen were arguing about.
“There is a lot more going on than you realize, you can’t just expect everything to go back to normal after so long. Now if the two of you would stop bickering like children we can discuss everything like adults.” They could hear Remus say, presumably attempting to diffuse the situation considering how level-headed the man typically is.
There was no sound as Sirius slowly peeked his head through the already open door, utterly disbelieving the sight before his eyes as his shocked exclamation broke the eerie silence.
“Holy shit!”
“What?!” Archie gasped from behind him, squeezing into the room behind Sirius and peering over his shoulder to see a face that he’d only ever seen in photos before.
Regulus’ eyes widened at the sight of the young Black, clearly seeing so much of himself in the fifteen year-old boy. You being pregnant when he left definitely wasn’t outside the realm of possibilities, you were married after all, and suddenly a lot of your anger towards him seemed justified.
“Is that my… Were you…” He trailed off, unable to find the words he wanted to say as his mind still processed this new information.
Remus suddenly covered his shaking head with the palm of his hand, quickly exiting the room and heading out the front door to get some air. He didn’t want to watch Regulus steal his wife and his kids away from him - he just couldn’t.
“Fuck.” You cursed under your breath, holding your own head in your hands as you attempted to make sense of the insanity around you. “Archie, go back upstairs, I’ll be up in just a minute.”
“But-” Your son didn’t get to finish his protest, the look in your eyes when your head shot up to look at him scared him into compliance. In his entire life, he’s never seen that look of utter fury, especially not from you. He quickly left the room, anxious to fill his sister in on everything that had just gone down.
“Sirius, please deal with your brother while I go find my husband.” You breathed, not sticking around to hear a response as you made your way down the hall.
“Now where,” Sirius began, pulling out the chair at the head of the table and quickly sinking into it, “have you been?”
“I was the cat.” Regulus stated simply, the smirk he typically wore working its way back onto his face.
“You were Hermione’s cat?!” Sirius laughed, finding the irony of another “dead” person in his life winding up as being one of the trio’s pets. “Maybe we need to take a look at Harry’s owl.”
But the humour of the situation didn’t last very long, both their faces quickly falling as reality gained their attention once more.
“I can’t believe I have a son…” Regulus trailed off, still in utter disbelief about the existence of the boy who looks exactly like him.
“And a daughter.” Sirius added, his brother’s eyes widening to saucers once more. “Twins, to be exact. Arcturus and Cassiopeia.”
“What’re they like?” He asked, desperate to learn more about the children he’d never known existed. Of all the things Harry, Ron, and Hermione talked about around him, they couldn’t have mentioned his children at least once?
“They’re perfect - don’t know where they get it from, probably somewhere on (Y/N)’s side.” Sirius said, a small smile forming as he talked about the kids he adored so much. “They’re both in Slytherin, just about to go into their sixth year. Archie is the quieter one, just like you were, while Cassie is a lot more extroverted and even joined the quidditch team her first year.”
“And (Y/N)...” Regulus suddenly grew solemn again, letting out a disappointed breath as he looked away to a random point in the room. “I need to win her back.”
“Regulus, I- I don’t think you can.” Sirius said, causing his brother’s head to whip back around to him, fury written all over his face. “Remus and her have been together for years, that’s not something that’ll just go away. He raised your children with her and they also have another son together, Teddy.”
“Then what am I supposed to do? Just give up?!” He snapped, a sinking feeling beginning to set in as he began to realize just how difficult getting you back to himself will end up being.
“What’re you supposed to do? You’re supposed to get to know and form a relationship with the children who’ve thought you were dead their entire lives!” Sirius said. “And maybe you’ll establish a new relationship with (Y/N) again, one as co-parents. But her and Remus have both been to hell and back, so please, just promise me you won’t go about trying to sabotage their marriage.”
“But what about our marriage?”
Remus couldn’t hear any of the typical sounds of busy London that night, he was too anxious and all that he could pick up were the sounds of his heavy breathing. He was so distracted, in fact, that he didn’t notice you quietly slipping through the front door or sitting down beside him until you leaned your head on his shoulder.
“How’d he come back?” Remus asked, wondering just what had happened to tear his life apart.
“He was Hermione’s cat.” You said, your voice soft and sorrowful. “Turns out the Marauders weren’t the only unregistered animagi at Hogwarts. I’m just embarrassed it took me so long to figure it out, I knew it was his patronus but I guess I just didn’t want it to be true.”
“What does this mean for us?” Remus asked the dreaded question looming in his mind.
“What do you mean ‘what does this mean for us?’ Why would this change anything?” You asked in disbelief, raising your head from his shoulder to look at him.
“But he’s Archie’s and Cassie’s father-”
“So are you! You’re also Teddy’s dad.”
“And you were married. He was your husband first.” Remus added, gazing at you with a look of nothing but misery. “We were at Hogwarts together, I saw how utterly obsessed the both of you were with each other for years. You never even spared me a second glance, the only reason you even knew I existed was because I was friends with his brother… I’m not even mad about it, you should be with whoever you want to be with, and that’s Regulus. You’ve always deserved someone better than me-”
“Now you listen to me Remus John Lupin.” You began, your husband flinching at the use of his full name, something that you only did when you were angry. “You are who I want to be with, not Regulus; there’s no one better than you. If anything, I’m the one who doesn’t deserve you. Yes, we were married first, but that was for less than a year and happened seventeen years ago! We’ve been together for fourteen years, Remus, you’re my life now. I loved him in the past but he abandoned his family, you’re my life now and the one I want to grow old with. He might be Archie and Cassie’s father, but you’ll always be their dad.”
None of your eyes were dry by the end of your confession and you both spent the next several minutes just holding each other, relishing in the fact that the both of you were going to be okay.
“Let’s go to bed, yeah?” You said, Remus nodding in response as the pair of you stood up. “We can deal with the rest tomorrow, Sirius can handle it for now.”
A/N: Okay, so I don’t personally believe the theory that Regulus never died and was actually Crookshanks, but it was what worked for this story so that’s what we’re going with! I’m so grateful for all the support this series has gotten, you guys are the best!

It was weird for Daisy. Having spent the better part of a year living with four smelly, teenage boys to be back in her own dormitory was ...different but nice. The girls spent a lot of time together that first couple of weeks. Lily, of course, had been able to catch up more than her so she felt she was lagging behind plus there was the matter of whatever she had missed from last term. It was just as well as the boys seemed distant. Daisy chalked it up to the distance they now had between them and the fact that Remus had had to put up with a transformation the first week back.
What was nice to see though was the way Remus and Lily’s friendship had grown over the summer. Though they had been prefects together for the last year Lily’s resentment towards his friends had stopped her from pursuing anything with the sandy-haired boy. Now, after Daisy had made them write to one another instead of through her they had found that they were actually good friends. Daisy liked it. It was nice to know that Remus had another shoulder to lean on if needed. Snape, thankfully, had decided to keep himself to himself though he had a newfound confidence it seemed thanks to his new friends. It had become a particular interest to Daisy though her sister seemed determined not to mention it.
As sixth year commenced Lily and Remus had decided to lead the charge of doing as much work as possible even though they were in the first term. This was of course good for them but not so much for their friends who were constantly nagged into homework or frowned at when they acted up in class. Because of this Daisy was happy that some of her electives were now without her sister. Muggle studies, for example, was one of the only classes she had respite. It was made better by the fact that she cohabited a desk with Sirius though he had seemed even more distant than the rest of the boys since they got back.
‘Now, this term we are moving onto the study of technologies! And to understand this we need to start by looking at the industrial revolution,’ Professor Burbage said, turning to the blackboard. She enjoyed the novelty of writing on it without magic as did Daisy as it reminded her of her teachers from primary school.
‘Ugh I hated this back in primary school,’ Daisy said to Sirius who was doodling next to her on a piece of parchment. ‘Huh?’ he said. ‘This… you know this topic,’ she said, watching him curiously. ‘Yeah right,’ he said noncommittally. She didn’t know why but this riled her up. She knew he had been distant since they had started back and she figured it was something or other that he would talk about when he was ready but she was becoming impatient. ‘What’s up with you?’ she asked, pushing the quill out of his hands and causing his doodle to go awry. ‘What’s up with me?! What was that for?’ he said with a scowl. ‘Because you’re being weird….well you have been for a while…’ she shrugged, going a little quieter as she realised a couple of classmates had turned their heads for a second and then turned back to the board as if they weren’t listening. ‘No, I’m not,’ he said. ‘Pffft! Like shit, you’re not. Now I thought it was just because of what happened you know over the summer but I don’t think it is. I mean you haven’t said anything about your parents-’ ‘I just have a lot on my plate okay,’ he grumbled. Instantly, he felt a small hand on his shoulder and looked up to find Daisy lying against him as if hugging him from the side. His stomach filled with butterflies at her touch.
‘Oh Pads,’ she sighed pulling out of the hug, ‘I get that but you can’t bottle it up and be all catty okay?’ ‘Bit hard to be catty given I’m a dog,’ he said instinctively, making her burst out a laugh. Professor Burbage’s gaze was immediately transfixed on them and a scowl danced across her face in warning. Daisy dropped her head as if yielding to the other witch though a big grin was still plastered across her face. As the teacher turned her back again and continued with the lesson she looked back to her deskmate who was watching her with a smile.
‘You know what I mean,’ she whispered. Sirius nodded. She was right. Since his revelation, he had tried all means of dealing with his feelings. Distancing himself didn’t work because he just wanted to be in her company more than before. Being around her and being cold and angry caused just as many problems. He had to try and quash the feelings just enough so that he could carry on as normal. ‘Or you could tell her,’ a little voice in the back of his brain said. Sirius shook his head as if trying to physically shake the thought from his brain. He couldn’t. He couldn’t do that because it would risk losing her and he had already lost enough up to now. His parents. His brother. His home. His friends and especially Daisy were the only things getting him through it all. He couldn’t risk it.
‘Honestly, I’m fine,’ he lied, ‘it’s just being back here. There’s so much work now-’ ‘Since when has school work bothered you?’ she chuckled. ‘Well, it’s not just that. I mean it’s hard to think of potions homework when there's an impending war. And seeing Regulus swanning about with his new death eater pals,’ he grumbled. Though it was a real concern of his he hadn’t mentioned it to anyone yet. ‘I didn’t think of that,’ she said, ‘are you okay?’ ‘Yeah… I mean we’re not exactly close, we drifted apart as soon as I went to school but he’s still my brother you know,’ he shrugged. ‘Yeah, I get it,’ she said, ‘so...do you think he’s recruiting here?’ ‘It’s a possibility,’ he shrugged. Daisy’s brows knitted together with worry which made Sirius instantly chime in, ‘but I wouldn’t think any of them are well you know…’ ‘Why not?’ ‘S’pose he doesn’t wanna get caught. If Dumbledore finds out he’s got followers on the inside there’d be hell to pay I guess.’ ‘I suppose,’ she said with a nod. Before they could say anything more there was a cough from the other side of the room that got their attention.
Professor Burbage was looking at them with a stern scowl from only a desk away. She was sharp as she ordered Sirius to move across to an empty table at the front leaving Daisy by herself. He disappeared down to the front though he could still see her and continued to make her laugh with the odd smirk he threw her way across the classroom.
When class was over Sirius waited by the door for Daisy to gather her things and the pair of them walked towards the great hall for lunch. As they descended the stairs towards the entrance hall they heard a commotion just off of the corridor. Curious, they checked it out. It was hard to see what was happening for Daisy due to the gaggle of sixth and seventh-year boys huddled in a circle. From what Daisy could see most of them seemed to be Slytherins and none of the nice ones. She didn’t have time to say anything to Sirius though as he was already striding ahead, obviously privy to whatever she wasn’t able to see due to her shorter stature.
The Slytherins grunted as he parted them like the sea but stayed split as Daisy forced her way to the front. There in front of them was Peter. He was pinned against a wall, a wand pressed to his throat by a boy with a flock of curly black hair. He was tall and slender but as Daisy moved to the side she could see his steely grey eyes.
Regulus.
He was flanked by Snape and another boy she knew to be McNair, though he was in the year above. Though everyone else had noted Sirius and her arrival Regulus hadn’t or he didn’t care. ‘Let him go,’ Sirius said with a gravitas that caused a shiver to go down Daisy’s spine. His face was dark and gloomy as he watched his brother swivel around with a menacing smile plastered on his face. ‘Sirius,’ he said with a grimace, ‘come to join the party?’ ‘Whatever you’re doing, stop it now,’ he said. Peter took this opportunity to scurry out from behind Regulus and get to the safety of his friends. As he lingered behind Sirius’ shoulder Daisy moved towards him and slipped her hand in his. It was cold and clammy as if he had been pumping sweat out by the bucket. ‘I’d like to say we know what you’re on about,’ he grinned. ‘And I don’t see what it matters to you,’ Snape said with a snide grin. ‘He’s my mate and you’re…’ ‘What?’ Regulus said with a quirked eyebrow. Daisy noticed how Sirius’ fist clenched, causing his knuckles to turn white. He was taking the bait. ‘Never mind,’ Sirius said, unclenching and looking at his friends, ‘forget it, let's go.’
The three moved through the gang of Slytherins quietly. Relief flooded through Daisy as they got out of the edge of the group of boys but it didn’t last long as a jet of light flashed by her, knocking her to the ground. She didn’t have time to fathom what was happening before it was all over.
Several Slytherins started to scatter around her and she shielded herself from the flurry of legs so she didn’t get trampled. When she looked up Sirius and Regulus were being prised apart with a flick of McGonagall’s wand and held away from one another. Sirius’ eye was red from a fresh hit and Regulus was sporting a fat lip. Both had steely glares and set jaws as McGonagall came toward them ranting and raving about how irresponsible they were. Peter appeared at her side and helped her off of the ground which she thanked him for. They approached the boys being chastised and caught the end of McGonagall’s tirade.
‘Hexing other students in the corridor! Fighting like Quidditch hooligans! You’re brothers for christ's sake if that’s not something to deter fighting I don’t know what is,’ she said shaking her head. ‘He’s no brother of mine,’ Regulus said with spite. Daisy realised just how far he was into his parents ‘regime’. He was brainwashed. ‘Likewise,’ Sirius said grimly though it was more mournful in tone. ‘Well, in any case,’ she said, ‘maybe two weeks detention would suffice as a deterrent.’ Neither boy said anything but they nodded to indicate they accepted their punishment. Regulus left first, shoving past Peter and Daisy as he did. McGonagall's stare followed him and then landed on Sirius where her expression changed and it became more pitiful. ‘Come on,’ he said to Daisy and Peter beckoning them to follow, which they did in silence. None of them spoke until they were in the great hall. None of the Slytherins had come to dinner but James and Remus were there when they all slipped into their seats. To Daisy’s surprise, Lily got up from the girls, whispering excuses, and came down to sit opposite her sister, next to James who looked like he was going to wet himself with excitement.
‘What happened to you?!’ she said looking at Daisy and then eyeing Sirius and Peter with accusation. ‘It’s nothing Lil,’ Daisy shrugged. ‘Daisy, you do realise you’ve got blood all down your neck right?’ James said. Everyone stared at her and watched as her hand went to her hair which was damp and wet. With a sigh, Lily flourished her wand and uttered a cleanup spell as the boys continued. ‘And you don’t look much better mate,’ Remus said. ‘What happened?’ Lily demanded.
So the trio broke into their tale. Peter explained how they had cornered him on his way out of ancient runes and tried to get him to tell them about where Sirius had gone after he had left home. Or if he had told anyone about his parents ‘parties’. Peter had said he didn’t know anything that had happened and they were hexing him trying to make him tell when Sirius and Daisy had appeared. ‘We were going to leave it I promise,’ Daisy said, automatically trying to get her sister to shake the look of disapproval. ‘Then how-’ she started. ‘Regulus hexed her,’ Sirius said grimly, turning to look at Daisy, ‘I thought it had missed you, to be honest. It’s a hex I’ve never heard before it must have cut you.’ ‘Yeah, it feels like it cut my ear but at least it’s stopped bleeding now.’ ‘What was it?’ Remus asked curiously. ‘Septumsemper? Sectumsempra something like that,’ Peter butted in. ‘Hmm,’ Lily and Remus said at the same time. ‘I hope you hit back,’ James said. ‘Oh they did,’ Peter said with a smile, making Lily roll her eyes. James seemed to note her disapproval and said ‘I mean to stop him hurting Daisy and that-’ ‘I punched him in the face,’ Sirius said. ‘You didn’t have to,’ Daisy said, putting a reassuring hand on his bicep. Sirius shrugged. ‘Well, when you put it like that,’ Lily said. James smiled wryly, ‘I’m just glad you’re okay...all of you…’ ‘Thanks,’ Sirius said with a weak smile. ‘The fightings not the concern here though,’ Daisy said. All eyes fell on her with curiosity, she continued, ‘I mean we’re school kids and he’s got people willing to fight just to find out what his enemies know or don’t know….it’s getting serious guys.’
None of them said a word.

Torn: Remus Lupin Story: PS OC: Chapter One: Sordid Sorting
————————-
Remus Lupin Imagine Turned Story
Re-Written and Edit of an old story of mine I had on Mibba that deserved some more love and attention, lol.
Remus Lupin x Vega Black (OC, OFC, PLUS SIZE OC, PLUS SIZE OFC)
————————————-----------
“Yet when books have been read and reread, it boils down to the horse, his human companion, and what goes on between them.” ― Walter Farley
------------------------------------------------------------------
This Chapter’s Song: “River” - Leon Bridges
------------------------------------------------------------------
Vega was eleven when she first met Remus.
She incredibly nervous at the time seeing as how it was her very first year at Hogwarts.
Her aunt and uncle had heavily warned her about getting into any house other than Slytherin....as if she had some kind of control over that kind of thing.
Sirius, her older cousin, who was more like a brother to be honest, had simply wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"It'll be fine, V. I swear it. No matter what house you get in. It'll be fine. Maybe you'll even be a Gryffindor, like me." he had told her with that infamous smirk of his.
Twelve years old and full of pride over his house.
But Vega was not convinced.
She'd been home when they'd received the news of which house Sirius had been placed in....and well, it hadn't been good.
She remembered very clearly that she'd grabbed Regulus and they'd ran off to hide until the storm blew over.
If you were present when Orion or Walburga Black were angry....well, you'd likely become a target.
After her parents had died when she was seven, she’d been placed in the care of her closest relatives and that happened to be her Uncle Orion and his family.
She’d left behind her beloved country roads and enchanting woods of Tennessee in America and was relocated in London.
She was expected to go to Hogwarts rather than Ilvermorny.
She was expected to be a respectable pureblood and get sorted into the only reasonable house.
Needless to say, she was terrified.
At that particular moment in time, they were racing down the tracks on the Hogwarts express.
To calm her nerves, Sirius had offered to have her sit with him and his friends in their compartment.
She was first introduced to James.
A boy with impossibly messy black hair, glasses and a permanent smirk...almost identical to her brothers.
Next was a small boy named Peter with impossibly blue eyes that were a tad unsettling to her just due to the nature of how piercing they were.
He looked friendly enough and if Sirius liked him she was sure she would too.
Lastly, was Remus.
Oh, Remus.
He was tall and lanky with very pale skin and light brown hair.
Vega could distinctly see a few scars across his face and on his hands but due to his clothes all else was hidden.
But he had the most beautiful green eyes but curiously enough there seemed to be a very faint golden brown ring around them.
She wouldn't have noticed had she not been so taken with him.
He was much quieter than the others but still quite nice.
Remus John Lupin.
Her very first crush.
Remus would've died from mortification at that time if anyone knew but....he found her quite pretty.
She was a year younger, yes.
And she was also Sirius little cousin, this was true.
One that he’d spent the better part of last year talking about to his new friends.
“Oh, you’ll love Vega, mates.” he could remember him telling them. “She’s a little shy at first but she’s actually from America. A cowgirl.”
Remus doubted if she was actually a cowgirl since Sirius had a way of being dramatic.
But she was so pretty.
She and Sirius resembled each other a lot with their thick black hair and big striking grey eyes but her features were softer than his.
She was much quieter with Sirius, although not impolite.
Sirius, whether he liked to admit it or not, had had the same good etiquette beat into him that she had and it often gave him a sort of casual elegance.
Little Vega sat stiff backed, mouth shut and eyes trained determined on her book.
She found reading to be easier.
She could focus on the words there and not on what she might say wrong that could potentially anger her parents.
Books were just by far much easier.
This intrigued Remus.
He had asked her so softly.
"What are you reading?"
She jumped at the sound of his voice, even as soft as it had been.
"Oh, um, it's-uh." she stammered.
"Oh that's The Black Stallion." he smiled. "It's a great book. My mum read it to me when I was little. It's a great muggle book."
Fear struck through her.
"Oh, I- please don't tell Aunt Walburga. I just- It looked so interesting and I wanted to know about the horse." Vega rambled as tears filled her grey eyes.
Sirius gave a hard forced smile to his friends before he grabbed his cousin and yanked her out of the compartment.
"Vega! Calm down! Bloody hell!" he snapped.
Tears were spilling, "I'm sorry, Sirius! I'm sorry! I didn't meant to get you in trouble with your friends! Now, Aunt and Uncle will be furious! I'm sorry!"
Sirius placed his hands on the side of her face.
"Vega, V, look at me. Look. at. me." he said holding her in place and willing her big, frightened eyes to focus on him. "It's fine. No one will tell mum and dad. These are my friends. Remus was just making conversation. His mother is actually a muggle."
He added the last bit with a little smile towards her.
She'd been so frightened.
She sniffled before she hugged her book closer to her for a moment.
"Come on. Come back inside." he said trying to lighten the mood.
She shook her head sending the black tendrils everywhere.
"No." she said. "Those are your friends. I...I'll go sit with someone else."
"V, come on." he said.
But she'd already whipped around and was dashing away.
Sirius shook his head as he entered the compartment.
"I'm sorry, Sirius. Really, I didn't mean to upset her. I didn't think-" Remus began his apology.
Sirius waved him off, "It's fine, mate. V's just....she's a little skiddish is all. Our family can be a bit much sometimes. She just doesn't want to get in trouble."
There was a collective nod around the room.
It wasn't a huge secret that Sirius didn't have the greatest home life...but he was good at hiding it.
Seeing Vega be absolutely petrified by pure conversation....made it all too real for the twelve year olds in the compartment.
The four of them played cards for a bit longer until they train stopped and everyone filed off.
Remus caught glimpse of the silky, black hair glinting in the night and those two big grey orbs that looked like moons themselves.
They landed on him and he could even see her flush red...even in this poor lighting.
He smiled at her kindly and gave a little wave to which she returned...hesitantly before she was bustled along into the boat with the other first years.
He joined his friends and soon they were seated at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall listening to Dumbledore and waiting for the Sorting ceremony to begin.
Vega almost hid behind some of the first year boys as she entered the Great Hall and her cousin Narcissa smacked into her pushing her way to the front.
She’d willingly let her take the spotlight and hide amongst the others but it wasn't for long before someone spotted her and the whispered began.
"It's the Black girl!"
"That's Sirius' little sister!"
“No that’s his cousin! The one who’s parents were killed!”
"Bet she'll get into Slytherin!"
"Maybe Gryffindor!"
"I bet she's evil!"
"She looks just like him!"
“Did you hear about her father being a-”
She shook her head to try and drown them out and before she knew it...
"Vega Equuleus Black." came the crisp words from the professor.
She gulped and took careful steps up to the stool before carefully settling down on it.
The giant hat was placed upon her head and...
"RAVENCLAW!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Big, grey eyes snapped open in fear and shock.
She could distinctly see Sirius and his friends whooping and hollering on her behalf while her cousins at the Slytherin table looked less than pleased.
If she hadn't been in front of all those people....she would've cried.
Because she knew.
She knew that when Orion and Walburga found out....and she went home for holiday....there would be no escaping it.
They would be angry and she WOULD be punished.
