SFW Giacomo: Our Time Apart

He had received the notice about someone wanting to raid them, destroy Team Star. He didn’t want to believe it when he heard the name. Surely it was someone else with the same name. You had gone abroad and he doubted he’d be seeing you anytime soon.

When the sirens blared he felt a spike in anxiety at the thought that it could be you, but he pushed it aside. There was simply no way.

Oh he was wrong.

Very wrong.

When he came out on his Segin Starmobile, his jaw dropped. He watched as you walked out to the field, the shock on your face was apparent.

“Gia?” You managed to shout out, not thinking that he, of all people, would be a member of Team Star. Sure you thought it was weird he didn’t go to school anymore, or that Nemona was now the Student Council president…but this was next level.

Giacomo murmured your name under his breath, before shouting, “W-what are you doing here?” 

“Shouldn’t I be the one asking that? Bro…the fuck?” You asked, looking at the giant pokemon he now rode. Giacomo sighed as he shook his head. He felt his heart beating so fast, he had to will his face not to go red under your gaze. It would appear he wasn’t over that crush on you, yet.

“I’m the leader of the Segin Squad.” Giacomo said as he crossed his arms. You felt a bit bad for what you had to do, but you did promise Cassiopeia that you would do this.

“Well then…guess we’re gonna have to battle, aren’t we?” You said, already grabbing one of your partner pokemon.

“I guess we will.” Giacomo said as he readied himself. If he recalled correctly, you were an exceptional trainer. This wouldn’t be easier, especially with how fast you cleared the base.

“I do have one question…” You said, stopping Giacomo, “A reward if I beat you.”

“What reward are you talking about?” Giacomo said and you smirked.

“Easy, if I beat you, I’m dragging you to the nearest town to grab a coffee. Now ready yourself, I won’t go down easy.” And with that, you left Giacomo overly flustered, debating just throwing the entire match.

Most of them are fine honestly. Belladonna, Cassie, Nellie, Narcissus, and Rhys don’t like them but can do okay with them. Ricinus, Goldenrod, and Cassiopeia don’t care.

Sel hates them but he can tolerate them - he needs to stress-stim to calm down but he’ll be okay. Stellaris cannot handle them. He will have a meltdown if exposed to loud sounds if they’re more than about a second or sufficiently loud. If you set off an emergency siren near him he will cry.

River Spirit Nami (Nami Iara)

Once upon a time, a young farmer was enchanted by music coming from the deep jungle, and followed it to the grove of a ricer spirit. Overcome by her beauty, he went to embrace her—and was dragged screaming into the emerald waters below, never to be seen again.

Concept:

One of my favorite skins, Nami Iara is a concept that naturally comes to her. As the game’s “mermaid champion", her skin pool should be entirely dependent on what can be done with her tail. Older skins like Koi or Deep Sea take full advantage of it by casting her as a sea creature, while her more recent skins like Splendid Staff, Cosmic Destiny, Bewitching, and Space Groove don't necessarily do that.

River Spirit fully embraces her mermaid origins, but rather than being the more generic siren-type, River Spirit Nami takes from an indigenous Brazilian folklore. Although, this may have been more due to Cassiopeia already fulfilling that role in this skinline.

"In the forest, under the moonlight...guided by the song of the river...I couldn't believe what I saw."

I grew up reading many different iterations of the Iara myth (though they were all of Mauricio de Sousa’s creations). My favorite, I believe, came from a large green book, a collection of several other Brazilian folklores including the headless mule, the saci, and the pink dolphin.

In this version, Iara is a beautiful indigenous woman who goes out into the forest, gets lost, and becomes a mermaid. It fully omits the conflict of envy and betrayal that is present in most other versions and Iara's death before she transforms. Nami Iara is betrayed and killed by her own tribe, but connects her to base Nami's kindheartedness by opting for the more modern casting of Iara as a guardian of nature, specifically bodies of water. Nami is lured to her death by the threat of pollution and in her rebirth, vows to protect the natural world.

Design:

River Spirit Nami’s concept art is beautiful. I think the design does a wonderful job of conveying her Brazilian, specifically Amazonian, origins through its colors and accessories. It’s always a bit difficult to work with Nami’s “hair” and though it looks great in the concept art and model, I do find it a little difficult to see in-game. What I can appreciate though is the decision to allow her to be topless like many indigenous women, especially those from the group that the Iara myth originated from. The tribal paint also connects her to her indigenous roots while also having some story significance, but it’s mostly used to provide a semblance of a top (interestingly, Nami, as an aquatic/sometimes amphibious being, has breasts but no nipples lol). Lastly, I really do love the design of her staff but I wish that the mirror either had more significance or didn’t exist at all.

Splash Art:

Personally, I’m a huge fan of the splash art. I find it does a good job of portraying that more alluring side of both Iara and Nami.

Model:

The model will almost always look worse than the splash art, especially for champions with older models like Nami. Wild Rift does an excellent job on the model but you really can’t compare the two. Going back to the design, looking at the model head-on does make her forehead appear a little strange, especially with the middle strand that is part of her “hair” in her base form but part of her headdress in this skin. From the sides, though, which is probably the angle the player will usually be seeing the model, it looks quite nice. I also love her tail despite it, as well as the rest of the skin, having more muted colors than the splash art. And though I liked the staff in the concept art, I don’t really like it in the splash or model. The piranhas are cute and I appreciate all the work that went into representing the Iara myth and, by extension, Brazilian culture.

Chromas:

No chromas.

Animations:

The only new animation is in her recall where she is sat on a rock and singing, an obvious reference to Iara. It’s pretty simple, but I do enjoy her head and face movements.

VFX:

Aside from making the water greener, there’s not much of a difference from base Nami. The yellow sparkle-like effects on her abilities are very pretty though.

SFX:

No new sound effects.

However, her recall does feature a vocalization of the very first part of Nami’s theme.

Voice Over:

I previously implied that Nami is not fit to play a vengeful character, but this skin's new voice lines, unique to Brazilian servers, portray her quite well. Like base Nami, she is intent on protecting her home, in this case, the river. However unlike base Nami, she does not have the love of her people to motivate her or fall back on and her voice lines reflect that as she denounces those who have betrayed her while also using that pain to fuel her mission of protecting nature.

Additionally, I'm not sure how many people find Nami "sexy", but she does have a few voice lines that are meant to be more alluring ("I'll meet you where the river bends." or "Your heart? I'll steal it!") as Iara is, above all, a siren who enchants men with her song before dragging them to the bottom of the river to drown. I find these voice lines adorable, more than anything.

Below are some of her new voice lines as well as the several changes to her original ones that were made to be more relevant to the skin’s background:

“We are all tied to the ocean.” —> “We are all tied to nature.”

“I will see my home again.” —> “Will I see my home again?”

(I’m not entirely sure if this is an altered line or a completely new one) “They’re puddle monsters at best.” —> “They’re nothing but traitors.”

“This is minnow’s play.” —> “This is lambari’s (a freshwater fish similar to a tetra) play.”

“Ew, whale breath.” —> “Ew, piranha breath.”

“I moonlight as a shark caller.” —> “I moonlight as an alligator caller.”

“My innocence was my downfall.”

And the fan-favorite ultimate line: “From the source (in reference to birth but also a water source) to your death!”

Value:

This skin is a personal favorite of mine, though not necessarily the most visually appealing. Recent (League of Legends) Nami skins have made her a conventionally cute mermaid girl, which, in turn, reinforces that archetype and generates more conventionally cute mermaid girl skins for her. For 975 RP, I think it’s a much better skin than Koi Nami, but Urf the Nami-Tee is cheaper at only 750 RP and arguably the cutest of her older skins.

Higanbana is lightly based off of Izanami, the ruler and goddess of the dead. She refused her other half because he was not her type (she’s more into other women and feminine nonbinary folks). She does not trust men or masculine nonbinary, in fact. There are many gods in her pantheon that want power, and Higan wants nothing to do with the power struggle. Her mission is to one day destroy everything in existence to stop it. She has reincarnated multiple times in her life, and is slowly getting back her memories. And unfortunately, the power struggle between the gods has gone too far in her eyes. I will only ship her with Demi-gods and other immortals.

Nebula is my celestial spirit mage. She has other magic so she isn’t as useless in a fight? I’m thinking moon magic as her secondary. Her strongest is possibly Draco and Phoenix, which are silver keys. She uses Cassiopeia and Andromeda to bind her enemies. She really wants to get her hands on a golden key, but she respects the fact that they’re taken by Yukino and Lucy. She was jealous that Lucy is the most beloved of the constellations, but has been told by Draco, the constellations absolutely adore Yukino and her as well. That the Star King is aware of the humans that summon his subjects. Nebula concentrates on getting the other silver keys while strengthening her moon magic. She is part of the guild, Siren Wing which specializes in the destruction/monitoring of dark guilds.

Mistress Nemain, “the Morrigan” is the Miranda (oc) of the Fairy Tail universe. She manipulates darkness and shadows. She may be young but she is wise beyond her years. She firmly believes that it’s how one uses magic that determines whether or not a person is good or bad. She despises Ivan of Raven Tail, for furthering the perspective that ravens are nothing but bad luck. She is the guild master for Siren Wing, a guild that specializes in the destruction and monitoring of dark guilds. She sponsors the independent guild, Crime Sorciere in their endeavors. She does not particularly like the Council either.

Sanguine Valentine, manipulates a strange magic known as vampire slayer magic. She has the ability to slay vampires and any of the undead at the cost of slowly becoming one of them, albeit an anathema. She is flirtatious but has standards. Her magic is over blood and fire manipulation. She must also drink blood to sustain herself, a consequence of using her magic. She is part of Siren Wing, continues to go on missions with Mistress Nemain. Sanguine excels heavily in knowledge of cults, the undead, and vampire politics. Sanguine is not her real name.

Sabrina Nivian, is a water dragon slayer. Her dragon mother and Fuyu’s dragon father raised her and Fuyu together. This way, Sabrina knows ice and water dragon slayer magic. She does not remember, but she was ordered to kill her dragon mother out of mercy. Sabrina does her absolute best to investigate where the dragons ended up. She searches for a sign of them, an egg so she can atone for her mother’s death and care for a dragon of her very own. From her dragon mother’s last letter to her, she is able to receive a lead, “water dragon god”. She has not bonded with an exceed yet.

Fuyu Boreal, is an ice dragon slayer. Her dragon father raised her with Sabrina’s dragon mother. Fuyu knows ice and water dragon slayer magic. Fuyu was instructed to kill her father out of mercy. In her father’s last words were to look for the water dragon god. She has not bonded with an exceed yet. She also investigates where the dragons ended up and how to find a cure for her parent’s illness.

Then I have dragon au’s for Crimson and Miyuki.

Cassiopeia cafe, a cafe in Astrono city, was the meeting place for people to hang out, to catch up on news

And it was not made for people to discuss about an evil team on the rise.

“Team Reign, huh.” Siren said, looking at the papers Ai had laid out on the table. After returning from Kanto and taking a good rest, she, Eden, Cosmo, and Ai decided to meet up at the cafe to discuss two things: one, the legendary freedom squad, and two, Team Reign. The latter was the current topic.

“It has to be Regina who’s behind Team Reign.” Ai explained, moving some of the papers so the others could get a better view of each page. “Regina Twist was my classmate back in high school, and she was very into technology and enhancing pokemon. She was looking up to be a promising inventor, but just using her skills the wrong way.”

Eden picked up one of the papers, which was about Regina’s time at school before being expelled. “I can see why people hated her and rejected her research.” She said, skimming through the words. “Using technology to modify Pokémon is unnatural. They are beautiful and powerful as they are, and they don’t need fancy things to make them more powerful.”

“Regina ran away from Constellia, well more like expelled from Constellia.” Ai started, looking through her Rotom phone for her notes about Team Reign. “No one’s heard from her ever since. It’s only through a post by Team Calm answering a message from Team Reign that reminded me of her. It’s been years, so who knows how far her technology has advanced.”

“Which means Legendary pokemon could be at risk of being enslaved by Team Reign…” Cosmo muttered, staring at his cup of tea, harvested from the local fields. “Domesticating legendaries sounds so wrong, they choose who they want to be, the person worthy enough to wield their great power.”

“It’s why I find your bond with Mahina incredible.” Cosmo added, turning to Siren. “Mahina was one of our lab pokemon. When you visited the lab to tell Eden you passed the Ranger Exam and became an official ranger, she approached you and chose you to be her trainer. It was like you two were meant to be together, like destiny. She could’ve ignored you, but she didn’t.”

“I think we spoke enough about Team Reign.” Ai said, packing up the papers. “I have friends from other regions keeping an eye on events and the sudden disappearance of mythical Pokémon. Anyways, Eden how’s the portable Star energy?”

“We have a prototype ready.” Eden answered, pulling out a small cylindrical object. It was mainly made of a sturdy transparent material capped off at the ends with copper ish metal. “Siren, thanks for going out to find a Booster Energy for me. I heard you almost got attacked by Paradox pokemon again?”

“Iron Bloom seems to hate me.” Siren answered. “Second time it tried to attack us.”

“Inspired by Booster Energy, I decided to call this Star Booster.” Eden continued explaining. “We still need to test it and refine it, however seems like we don’t have a lot of opportunities to do so. Constellia is swarming with Star energy so testing here will result with nothing, and it’ll be weird seeing a Dynamaxed Pokémon in say… Alola.”

”But this is a great start.” Siren added, drinking her cup of tea. “But aren’t we forgetting something?”

“Were we?” Ai asked, looking up at the potted plants handing from the ceiling. “We talked about Team Reign and the legendary preservation squad…”

“What we’re gonna call the legendary preservation squad.” Siren answered. “We don’t have any ideas yet, so let’s discuss that and we’ll get going.”

Happy wbw! This might be a strange one, but how do you think your characters would do in the setting of Illaros?

Happy WBW! This isn’t a strange one at all, I’m actually pretty hyped :)

I’m going to primarily go with the Seven Station characters because I think they’ll be more entertaining but if I’m in the mood I might throw in some Pirates’ Roost characters at the end. Also I’m making my usual crossover assumptions - everyone can understand each other’s language (although they won’t know world-specific terms, like Belladonna has no clue wtf a halawemavar is) and magic powers work regardless of the setting. I’m also going to assume the Seven Station characters have gotten used to seeing grass :)

Honestly, I think Cassie’s going to do the best on Illaros. Her machine empathy is pretty much useless, but she doesn’t really need it honestly - she can still use it to make her arm function better. She’d probably join a local militia or become a bounty hunter and actually be pretty successful. I feel like if she ever met Izjik, they’d really get along.

Belladonna and Nellie are both struggling but I think they’d make it. Nellie would have a rough time without her meds, but she’d survive. She’s pretty resourceful and I feel like she’d be able to get a contract using her empathy magic. Belladonna’s mostly struggling because she’s never been unimportant before, but she’s clever and very good with rich people so I think she’d manage to swing it as a negotiator or something. I think Cassiopeia would be okay for the same reason, although she’d definitely be plotting to usurp whoever took her in and move up in society as much as she could.

Ricinus and Goldenrod would be okay if they landed in the city. They’re screwed otherwise - they’re both too proud to do “peasant work.” If they landed in a city, they’d probably pretend they were never married and start new lives avoiding each other as much as possible.

Sel would make it too. He’s naive and wouldn’t entirely understand what’s going on, but he’s clever and resourceful and very hardworking. He’d end up with a job in a restaurant or something and a small place to himself and live a quiet life. I think Rhys would end up doing something similar, although he’d have a harder time of it due to his disabilities.

Stellaris would be so excited but he would not do well. He’d be fascinated by everything around him but he honestly does not have a lot of skills for job prospects and is not good at endearing himself to others. I think he and Astra would get along if they met but outside of that he’d have a very rough time.

Narcissus would not survive. There would be bugs. He’d be broke. He’s allergic to pollen. I’m sorry but this man wouldn’t make it a week.

Also as a bonus - most of the Pirates’ Roost cast would do pretty fine on Illaros (it’s not too drastically different from Ixalan, they’d adapt), but I’m confident if the HO cast ever met Malcolm, it would go extremely poorly. Like I feel like they’d already be weirded out by this little feathery man (Malcolm’s like 5’7 and skinny) introducing himself as a siren but if they saw him praying quite passionately to the stars? I’m extremely confident it would be on sight.
