As an appreciator of Greek mythology, I think that some naming choices in ace attorney are very interesting

Constellations used and other yapping under the cut

From top to bottom, left to right the constellations are:

-Cassiopeia

-Phoenix

Mask: -Lyra (the lyre of Orpheus, gifted by the god Apollo, used to drown out the songs of sirens and charm the favor of gods)

-Lepus (the hare, aka bunny lol)

-Delphinus (the dolphin)

-Libra (the scales bc… duh)

I think we forget that she was literally shot in the face and presumed dead, so even post-op I hc her as having brain damage and still being half blind. I tried to figure out just where she had to have been shot to affect both the vision and memory part of her brain, especially from the high angle and it turns out that’s a little impossible so I tried lol.

I wanted to add more sea imagery to her design seeing as she was literally named after the primordial goddess of the sea, it’s also why I added so much pink in her design, Thalassa (the goddess) is symbolized with coral. Also I think the dark blue/ coral pink is a really nice color combo. I also used this as inspiration to add scales to her white dress.

🚨, 🐞, 🥊 for Cake(love me a toxic parent character) and Cashmere

🚨 (siren) - What’s your character’s relationship with the law? Have they ever been arrested? What for? What are their opinions on law enforcement? Cake is above the law as princess of the Crystal Empire and mother to the heir of the kingdom, no one can lay a finger on her or tell her what she’s doing is wrong! Prior to adulthood her father and mother probably kept her out of trouble, if ever someone tried to raise concerns with her behavior they’d be met with the wrath of their rulers for daring to accuse a royal or wrongdoings! And that is something that Cake does as well :3 Cake uses the knights of the kingdom for her own purposes, they answer to her and no one else so she views them favorably so long as they continue to do as she tells them!

🐞 (ladybug) - What does a perfect day look like for your oc? What do they do? Who do they see? A perfect day for Cake is one in which she is beloved by all and continues to maintain a picture perfect life as a loved and respected ruler, it also looks like raising your children to be perfectly obedient! She puts a lot of work into each of her children but has very clear favourites in Cassiopeia, the heir to the throne and someone who Cake has put a lot of work into raising to be not just a perfect heir to the kingdom but in a way that benefits Cake, and then Cashmere who Cake honestly just likes to play dress up and doll house with, Cassie is Cake’s hope for the future and changing the rules set by those far before her (honestly not a bad goal she just goes about shit on the worst way and generally sucks as a person but I love her), and Cashmere is like idk, her comfort child? She still is stressing Cashmere the fuck out and putting a lot on her plate and lots of targets on Cashmere’s back by favoruing her over others but like Cashmere is like less of a person and more of a thing to Cashmere. This has been a long answer and I kinda went on tangents oops

🥊 (boxing glove) - Has your character ever been in a fight? Did they win? Do they fight often? Are they professionally trained or self taught? Do they enjoy fighting or only do so when necessary? I do not think Cashmere has ever really been in a fight where it was like, unplanned and fight or flight, she has been subject to being attached by her sister, Calliope, with no way of fighting back and then she has fought and sparred with her mentor, Pygora, and others from Grimmwood but that was more of like a planned thing, they’re not just attacking them out of the blue! I have a fairly good track record for winning fights with the people of Grimmwood, they were taught well by Pygora and everyone there of course! Idk if necessarily professionally trained is the right word but they were trained by several people in the village to fight in different ways, Cashmere also took up a style of fighting that is very fanciful and dance like, very delicate steps with deliberate attacks if I’m making any sense at all! Cashmere likes to spar often at it is a good way to pass time and relieve stress when possible, there isn’t a lot to do in Grimmwood

Dandelion-shaped supernova and zombie star

In 1181, a new star shone near the Cassiopeia constellation for six months before disappearing. This event, recorded as a “guest star” by Chinese and Japanese observers almost a millennium ago, has puzzled astronomers for centuries. It is one of a few supernovae to be documented before the invention of telescopes. In addition, it remained an “orphan” the longest, meaning that none of the celestial objects visible today could be assigned to it. Now known as the supernova SN 1181, its remnant has only been traced in 2021 to the nebula Pa 30, found in 2013 by amateur astronomer Dana Patchick while examining an archive of images from the WISE telescope as part of a citizen scientist project.

But this nebula is not a typical supernova remnant. In fact, astronomers were intrigued to find a surviving “zombie star” at its center, a remnant within the remnant. The 1181 supernova is thought to have occurred when a thermonuclear explosion was triggered on a dense, dead star called a white dwarf. Typically, the white dwarf would be completely destroyed in this type of explosion, but in this case, some of the star survived, leaving behind a sort of “zombie star.” This type of partial explosion is called a Type Iax supernova.  Even more intriguingly, strange filaments emanated from this zombie star, resembling the petals of a dandelion flower. Now, ISTA Assistant Professor Ilaria Caiazzo and lead author Tim Cunningham, a NASA Hubble Fellow at the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian, get an unprecedented close-up view of these strange filaments.

A 3D model of a ballistically expanding explosion

The team around Cunningham and Caiazzo could study this strange supernova remnant in detail thanks to Caltech’s Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). KCWI is a spectrograph located above 4,000 meters at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, near the summit of Mauna Kea volcano, Hawaii’s highest peak.

As its name indicates, KCWI was designed to detect some of the faintest and darkest sources of light in the universe, collectively called the “cosmic web”. In addition, KCWI is so sensitive and smartly designed that it can capture spectral information for every pixel in an image. It can also measure the motion of matter in a stellar explosion, creating something like a 3D movie of a supernova. KCWI does so by examining how the light shifts while moving closer to or away from us, a physical process similar to the familiar Doppler shift we know from blaring sirens that change their tune as an ambulance races by.

Thus, instead of only seeing the typical static image of a fireworks display common to observations of supernovae, the researchers could create a detailed 3D map of the nebula and its strange filaments. In addition, they could show that the material in the filaments traveled ballistically at approximately 1,000 kilometers per second. “This means that the ejected material has not been slowed down, or sped up, since the explosion,” says Cunningham. “Thus, from the measured velocities, looking back in time allowed us to pinpoint the explosion to almost exactly the year 1181.”

Evidence of an unusual asymmetry

Beyond the dandelion-shaped filaments and their ballistic expansion, the overall shape of the supernova is most unusual. The team could demonstrate that the ejecta—the material within the filaments being ejected away from the explosion site—is unusually asymmetrical. This suggests that the asymmetry stems from the initial explosion itself. Also, the filaments appear to have a sharp inner edge, showing an inner “gap” surrounding the zombie star. “Our first detailed 3D characterization of the velocity and spatial structure of a supernova remnant tells us a lot about a unique cosmic event that our ancestors observed centuries ago. But it also raises new questions and sets new challenges for astronomers to tackle next,” concludes Caiazzo. She started working on this project as a Burke-Sherman Fairchild Postdoctoral Fellow in theoretical astrophysics at Caltech, USA, before joining ISTA in May this year.

Finally coming back to the Wednesday series, and this time with a group of new characters! They're a group of close friends despite being all different from one another. They always have each other's backs, even if things turns nasty with a killer creature on the loose.
