Shower thoughts: the Fair Unknown's villain
I don't know about you guys but I have a sneaking suspicion that Evraine from Le Bel Inconnu is actually Ywain, from Knight of the Lion/Lady of the Fountain. The reason is because one of the variants of Evraine's name I found is "Jrayne", depending on the manuscript. The "J" would have been pronounced with a "Y" sound.
The big problem with this theory is where would Ywain even get magic powers? I don't think Merlin teaches guys. Maybe, it was Lunette. *Shrugs*
Nah, maybe I'm wrong. Forget about it.

Merlin Loregasm Rewatch S1E9
Hi Everyone! Welcome to my rewatch of Merlin focusing on the lore. I am a giant nerd so pretty excited about this. We’re on EXCALIBUR
Uther: Do you solemnly Swear to govern the peoples of this kingdom and their dominions according to the statutes, customs, and laws, Laid down by your forebearers,
Arthur: I do Sire
Uther: Do you promise to exercise mercy and justice, in your deeds and judgments?
Arthur: I do Sire
Uther: And do you swear allegiance to Camelot now and for as long as you shall live?
Arthur: I, Arthur pendragon, do pledge life and limb to your service And to the protection of the kingdom and it's peoples.
Uther: Now, being of age, And the Heir apparent, from hence forth you shall be crown prince of Camelot Okay so Arthur is now crown prince of Camalot. And of age. we know hes at Least 20 so of age is likley 21 in this world which is interesting because it implies lifespans are longer due to the more advanced medicine, Normally the medieval OF AGE was 16 years old. Also, see the golden ring placed around Arthurs head? Yeah thats called a Coronet and was traditionally worn by crown princes at formal occasions (Like we will see Arthur do)
It is a bit odd he was not considered crown prince already since he was the oldest royal child (And only royal child as far as people know) So even if Primogeniture (Inheridence by oldest son) was not a thing he would STILL be crown prince. See a crown prince IS the heir apparent of a royal kingdom. And Heir apparent is the one who is going to succeed the king. And cannot be displaces by the birth of another prince. So if he was heir apparent he pretty much was already was Crown prince. My guess is this is traditionally reaffirmed in Camalot when a prince comes of age,
I also like the use of the word peoples because it kinda hints that Camalot is big enough to have multiple peoples within its lands. Which if the theory from the Lancelot episode is true would be the case.
WHOOO Okay I think we have an answer. Devil is VERY Christian. So I'm going with there being some very weird semi paganized version of Christianity existing in Camalot that is left over from the Romans and just got mixed with local traditions. I therorized about this in one loregasm and I'm sticking with it because they ARE VERY MUCH not full on Catholic or Eastern Orthadox. And there are still a lot of pagan elements.
Throwing down a Gauntlet as a challenge is a custom of the late medieval era. It was considered a GRAVE insult and HAD to be picked up to accept the challenge if one wanted to keep ones honnor.
HI Sir Owain! Lesse in the original legends you were a Child of Urrian of Gore and Morgana. You had a pet Lion! You defeated a evil knight and married his widow, Then neglected your wife because you were too busy doing knight stuff. She ditches you and you go mad with grief and live naked in the woods. Then Morgana cures you and you win back your wife. Also, you are one of the last to die before Arthur at Cammlan. Have I mentioned how much I love that Merlin sometimes just goes NAH let's kill em instead?
Geof: Gaius thank god
Gaius: you know why I'm here
Geof: The black knight
Gaius: So it is he
Geof: you saw his crest
Gaius: have you confirmed it?
Geof: it is the crest of Tristan De Bois
Gaius: And he is the only knight ever to have carried such a crest
Geof: yes acording to the records
Okay this is a HUGE boon for us lore wise, See we don't know that much about the personality of Yygraines family. (or a ton about her's for that matter) BUT if it's his crest not a family crest it means HE picked it. So we can use heraldry to learn a bit about him!
So the symbol he uses is an Eagle this represents strength and courage and often has to do with military skill and leadership. It can also represent freedom, and independance and the ability to see things clearly. black represents constancy or grief and white peace and sincerity.
So Tristan was likely a strong man and military leader who was sincere and constant in his personality. He likley tended to perfer peace but when pushed to it would fight well. He might have been independent minded as well showing by making his own crest.
OOCLY the show could be telling us that it is likley telling us this man was RIGHT about Uther being at fault. One way or another. And his act in standing up to Uther was a courageous one. OR its also possible he took up this sigil after Ygraines's death If so his very crest and oufit is blaming and taunting Uther! But that is just my assessment!
HI Sir Pellinor! Lesse in the original legends you were the king of Listeoise (Lake District) Or of "the Illes." You killed king Lot, And hunted the Questing Beast relentlessly. You were killed by Gwaine. You were also Percival's dad. (Among other kids.)
Othanden can mean Out Of Hand in Danish. Otherwise I cannot find much on this. My guess is this battle would have taken place in the previously mentioned war with Mercia
Gaius: Tristan De Bois was the brother of Ygraine -- Uther's wife
Merlin: Arthur's Mother?
Gaius: Ygraine died in childbirth. He blamed Uther and came to the gates of Camalot and Challanged him.
Merlin: to single combat?
Gaius: Uther won, but with his dying breath Traistan cursed Camalot to one day suffer his return. I thought it was the ramblings of a dying man. People Estimate the chances of death in childbirth in the middle ages to be the cause of 50 percent of young female fatalities. Giving birth was incredably dangerous. (And most woman did it many time though less so in the Merlin world) For in the actual birthing process and the chance of childbed fever afterward. So this is likley an early clue to the fact that there was somthing supernatural going on with Arthur's birth. No one in their right mind blamed a man for the death of their wife in childbirth ESPECIALLY if said wife was having their first birth and not too old or too young.
Now in the Merlin world I would guess death in childbirth of woman is at a much lower rate. For two reasons. First of all The more advanced medicine would make it a bit less common. (Though they do not have modern medicine or germ theory or modern technology so not by much) The other reason being IN merlin families seem to be small compared to the huge ones of the middle ages. (Hinting Child Mortality is not as high) So less chances for a woman to die. STILL it likely would have been fairly common.
Now to the interesting fact that Ygraine came from France! Implying contact and trade with them. See Ygraine is the french version of Arthur's mother's name And we've talked about the last name in previous posts.
"Came to the gates of Camalot castle and challenged him" is interesting because it means he was not in Camalot. SO HOW would he know about Uther's involvement in Ygraine's death? My guess is it lies in the "one day suffer his return" See here we have another "How would he know." My guess is the man was some sort of seer. Or magic user. Ygraine was said to have been pretty friendly with many magic users. It's possible magic (or being a seer) ran in her family. The other option of her somehow writing him and knowing about the whole magic to conceive thing is also possible but doesn't explain knowing he would return, Nimue could just have been using something he said randomly but I don't really think so? OR he was just crazy? And was attacking Uther for what he thought was a normal childbirth death? That would be REALLY weird. though. And the later "it was magic that killed her not I" and "never the less it was you he blamed" Seems to go against this option
Gaius: My guess is we're dealing with a Wraith.
Merlin: A wraith?
Gaius: The spirit of a dead man conjured from the grave.
Merlin: So this is the work of a sorcerer
Gaius: Powerful Magic can harness the greif and rage of a demanted soul and make it live again
Merlin: How do we stop it?
Gaius: We can't, Because its not alive no mortal weapon can kill it
Merlin: Surly there must be somthing
Gaius: Nothing can stop it until it has achived what it came for
Merlin: And what's that
Gaius: Revenge.
Wraith is a Scottish word for ghost that has become a more general term. It can also mean the exact likeness of a person seen before death as a death omen, (A soul who was on the verge of death or recently passed on) From there the meaning has evolved to many many different things.
Geoferry is not in on it! Its likely Arthurs birth magic is not in the court records of the purge! (Theorized about this perviously)
Uther: Havn't you tired of revenge?
Nimueh: Haven't you? You Began this war when you threw me from the court and salughtered all of my kind
Uther: you brought it on yourself you practiced evil
Nimueh: I was your freind Uther, You welcomed me here
Uther: you betrayed that freindship
Nimueh: I did as you asked I used the magic you so despise to give your barren wife the son you craved
Uther: Don't ever speak of her in that way She was my heart, My soul, and you took her from me.
Nimueh: She died giving birth to your son. it was not my choice. That is the law of Magic. to create a life there had to be a death, the balance of the world had to be repaired
Uther: you knew it would kill her
Nimueh: No you're wrong. If I had forseen her death and the terrible retrebution you would seek. I would never have granted your wish.
Ok first of all we know from later Nimugh has a bit of control of who dies. Hinting that something interfered here causing it to be Ygraine. (I totally don't have headcanons about this you will eventually see in my fics)
ALSO, I find it interesting he says "Evil" not "evil sorcery," I think he truly belives all magic is evil. I mean every villain is a good guy in their own mind.
BUT he was also freinds with Nimueh and welcomed her to Camalot. So he didn't always think all magic was evil. It seems it truely was Ygraines death that caused that. I always wondered if part was just an excuse in his mind because he was insecure that other people had so much power and perhaps helped him build the kingdom with it. So they could tear it down. I think Nimueh was court sorcerer. And helped him take over the kingdom, but that's just my headcannon.
Also gotta wonder what kinda person Ygraine was that Uther fell so deeply in love with her.
Geoff: Well several fables speak of Ancient swords
=Merlin: that can kill the dead?"
Geoff: The swords the fables speak of could destroy anything alive or dead.
Merlin: can you show me one of these fables"
Geoff: welll let me think, yes
(Later)
Goef: this is the chronicle of Beltane, now then, ah were we are 'Sir Marhaus looked at the great sword, begotten in the dragons breath and found it passing good"
Sir Marhaus was the son of the king of ireland and his sister was the queen of Ireland and a knight of the Round Table in folklore. Beltane as we addressed is celebrated may 1st! So this book is the chronicles of a holiday on May 1st
Merlin: I've come to ask for a sword. The strongest sword your father's ever made
Gwen: What for?
Merlin: To save Arthur (Cut to latter but continuation of this scene so keeping it here)
Gwen: My father's been saving this. Hes always said it was the best sword he's ever made.
Merlin: its perfect
Gwen: He'll kill me if he find's I've taken it
Merlin: He'll understand, You did it for arthur. I've talked about this before but this is more evidence that Gwen's family, while commoners, are not the same level of poor as most. Making swords and armor, especially good ones was a skilled art. And those things were EXPENSIVE. Tom is not the royal swordsmith so its HIGHLY likely he rivals the royal swordsmith in skill enough to have some knights of Camalot (The people who can actually afford arms and armor) Buy or get repairs done from him instead. (This is a big deal he must be VERY good) There are not many other people he could be making swords and armor for. I suppose there might be some mercenaries and freelancers who are rich enough for swords and perhaps VERY RARLY full on armor. He makes armor that is of the quality nobles wear, And can afford to just give it to people. we know this from Lancelot. I think he must do other typical blacksmithing AND Arms and armor for knights. So I see two possibilities. Either they consistently live at a level above the poverty of most commoners
OR Every now and then he gets a commission that makes them richer for a bit. With Gwen ALSO being such a good seamstress and Also considering they seem to be able to give away armor (Cough Lancelot cough) I think the first option is more likely, or perhaps its a mix of the two. To be clear they are not rich. I'm not saying they are rich. I'm saying they seem to be above most commoners in wealth. Also, wealth did not matter as much as Class in the middle ages anyway.
Him putting his best sword away might be some form of insurance He's still a commoner and is not guaranteed work because he is not the royal smith. And what if there is some emergency or a time when he doesn't get any of the fine commissions for a while?
Uther: You knew that one day this business would come back to haunt me.
Gaius: not quite so litteraly
Uther: I should have listened to you. You said that no good would come of using witchcraft at Arthur's birth
Gaius: you wanted an heir you thought it was the only way.
Uther: Nimueh told me there would be a pice to pay
Gaius: You weren't to know that price would be Ygraines life
OKAY first of all does this mean that GAIUS was not the one to suggest using magic? Then WTF was Uther talking about in that conversation about something being stupid to do "because Gaius said it was so" back in the poisoned chalice? Was Gaius just the messanger? It means it might explain more why Gauis lived if he was not the one to suggust it. Perhaps Uther asked Gaius if he knew a way and Gaius said he did but no good would come of it? Or Gaius was indeed just the messenger? BUT WHY DID HE NEED A MESSENGER IF NIMUEH WAS AT COURT. I swear when this is all done I'm going over all of these and doing a summary of possible answers to some questions!
Merlin: will your Bunrish it to save Arthur
Killy: The dead do not return without reason, who has he come for.
Merlin: Uther
Killy: Then let him take his Vengance and the wraith will die without my aid.
Merlin: But it's Arthur who is going to fight him! You have to save him
Killy: That is your destany young warlock not mine
Merlin: But if Arthur fights the wraith and dies camalot will have no heir, I will have no destany
Killy: A weapon forged with my assistance will have great power
Merlin: I know
Killy: You do not know You can only guess. You have not seen what I've seen. If you had perhaps you would not ask this of me.
Merlin: what do you mean?
Killy: In the wrong hands this sword could do great evil
Burnishing typically means polishing metal until it shines. Figuratively it can mean to enhance or perfect something. I think this is an interesting word to use and possibly implies a sword like Excalibur would never need to be polished again.
Also I'm pretty convinced one thing Killy is talking about here is how most of the high priestesses died. Remember mortal swords can not kill Morgana by the time of her death. There could be many other incidents too. However seeing as Excalibur mostly functions as a normal sword until one is up against undead or borderline imortals I think this could be a main focus. Of course it does bring up the question of if there were other swords and what happened to them if this is true. Because if this was the case I SERIOUSLY doubt Uther would have let such swords just vanish. Then again as far as we know the sword that killed Arthur was just used as a grave maker. ALSO as far as we know those are the only dragon-burnished swords we see in the show. Which means there are others either just hidden places, or out there with people having no clue as to their powers because they just found them somewhere and were like cool sword! The later kinda amuses me. Just some random dude around having no idea their sword is a WOID (Weapon Of Immortal Destruction)
Uther: Who made it?
Merlin: uh, tom the blacksmith
Uther: Its worthy of a king
Merlin: You would be better off with a sword your trusted
Uther: No, It has almost Perfect balance. Tom's not the Royal swordsmith I'm supprised Arthur went to him.
Merlin: That was me.
(This is the line I keep referring to about how Gwen's dad is not the royal swordsmith.)
The balance point on a sword is where you can lay it over a finger and not have it fall, Its center of weight. Usually its just a bit above the hilt. This is why most swords had pommels
If there is too much weight in the direction of the grip the trikes from it will not be fast and smooth, Also you will have a hard time pushing your opponents blade around. while if there is too much on the blade it will take longer to recover from a blow.

Random question vaguely inspired by a recent reblog: If there was one knight of the round table you wish either appeared, or had more relevance, in Fate/, who would you choose? (Personally, I want Yvain/Owain, the knight of the lion, to show up in more than just the skill description for Ruler Artoria)
Sir Lucan the Butler, aka Bedivere's brother. My reasoning is that it would be funny as hell to have a guy mostly known for handling paperwork in a round table filled with frontline warriors.

All the arthurian movies I watched from best to worst (imho)
Regarding my opinions and my taste: I am okay with low budget, bad special effects and even bad/weird acting, I prefer enjoyment over any kind of historical accuracy. I also enjoy cheesy movies, and I prefer characters over plot, and plot over the rest (pace, acting etc.).I tend to prefer movies that uses characters with a reason (ex. using Morgause as Arthur's sister versus using a random guy and calling him Gaheris just because it's an arthurian sounding name). I am also a bit Mordred fan.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Camelot (musical, 1982 or the Vanessa Redgrave version) - this musical is one of my favorite musicals and one of my favorite arthurian adaptations. It makes Arthur a true protagonist and really put a lot of effort into showing how complex and important his dream is (also I love movies where a character has to renounce to something to protect an ideal)
Excalibur Kid (1999) - best trashy Connecticut Yankee movie, with Morgause as Arthur's sister and focusing on the protagonist convincing Arthur to be a king
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (cartoon) - the best adaptation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Sire Gauvain et le Chevalier Vert (French short) - the best non animated Gawain story at the moment
The Sword in the Stone
Sword of Lancelot (1963) - a classic Lancelot and Guinevere story, but probably because of the hawk-bearing Mordred and his plotting I really enjoyed it
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1988) - a great adaptation of the book with a girl as the protagonist. It has nothing too different from usual, but the protagonist is great and Guinevere has a much bigger role than usual
Morte d'Arthur (1984) - a movie of just scenes and an external narrator, but it is so well done and some of the scene (Mordred's betrayal!) are amazing
Excalibur (1981)
Merlin and Arthur the Lion King - a cartoon, so expects it to be very kids-friendly, but it still manages to be fun and also one of the two movies with a Mordred redemption
Dragons of Camelot - extra trashy, but has a very thigh pace and gives a lot of depth to the characters, mostly Guinevere, Morgana, Lancelot and Galahad. It's so bad that it's good.
Merlin and the Sword - an extra trashy movie, but there are so many plot points (Nimue and Merlin, Ragnelle and Gawain, Lancelot and Guinevere, Morgana) that it ends up being entertaining
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - pretty fun, a lot of strange humorous pacing, but using Kay as a random name, and not enough arthurian elements, it was clearly made to be the first of a series and kept a lot of elements for the future that never happened
A Knight in Camelot - another good Connecticut Yankee adaptation, with an interesting twist at the end
Arthur and Merlin (2015) - historical based, very nice visuals but Arthur and Merlin are the only real characters in the movie (and the only arthurian characters) and it seems more like it is setting the scene for a bright future that never comes, also very slow
New adventures of a Connecticut Yankee - this is so low because it's in Russian and I don't know Russian, but the visuals are AMAZING
The Knights of the Round Table (1953)
King Arthur: Knights of the Round Table (2017) - not really arthurian characters just strange reincarnations, a lot of absurd plot points, but pretty fun and one of the two movies in existence to have a Mordred redemption. Also, aliens. Far too long.
Percival 2007 - it was in Portoguese so I could understand little, but it looked very dramatic?
Quest for Camelot - the cartoon! Probably this is my nostalgia bias
King Arthur - good actors, not boring, but also nothing special and mostly focused on Lancelot and Arthur
Merlin and the Book of Beasts - classic 'Arthur's daughter has to reclaim the kingdom', but it glossed over the whole Mordred thing.
Arthur's Quest - a classic modern reincarnated Arthur fighting Morgana
A young connecticut yankee in King Arthur's court - a bad movie but so so fun. It also has evil Galahad and an amazing Morgana
Prince Valiant -classic Valiant adventure with more Gawain
Prince Valiant (1997) - classic Valiant adventure
Merlin and the War of Dragons - the plot is all over the place, but it manages to put together Igraine and Uther with Merlin's backstory. The only interesting part is the whole Nimue vs Viviane.
Avalon High (2010) - this low for having butchered the novel and ending up with confusing the plot and the whole sense of the novel. Still, definitely fun to watch for the right public.
First Knight - not too bad, but a bit boring and a story already seen. A classic Lancelot/Guinevere.
Guinevere (1994) - this is a mediocre movie about Guinevere and a loose adaptation of Persia Woolley's books.
Merlin the Return - so bad but also weirdly fun, a part for extra sexist Gawain
A kid in King Arthur's Court - my least favorite Connecticut Yankee movie, mostly because I really disliked the protagonist and the pace
King Arthur: Excalibur Rising - very slow pacing, focusing on Owain (here Arthur's son) vs Mordred, but spends little time on the characters themselves and mostly on setting Owain's big sword revelation and stuff
Lancelot du Lac (Lancelot and Guinevere) - I hate this movie. It's the classic Mordred finds out about Guinevere and Lancelot, but all the characters appear pretty boring with the exception of Gawain.
The Spaceman and King Arthur - this is so high in the list because it adds something new to the usual Connecticut Yankee story. But it's bad and pretty sexist.
Camelot The Legend cartoon - they sing and it's very bad
Sword of the Valiant - which is this low for the absurd way the butchered Gawain and the Green Knight
Merlin of the Crystal Cave - mostly focused on child Merlin and his mother
Merlin (1993) - not really an arthurian movie, as it's a modern times reincarnated lady of the lake stopping a prophecy. Nothing too exciting
Un espanol en la corte del rey Artur - a musical
Arthur and Merlin: Knights of Camelot - takes itself too seriously, Merlin is in it just for 10 minutes, focusing on Arthur's self angst, a lot of plot-points that makes little sense
Lancelot: Guardian of Time - this movie is weirdly fun, but the bad outweighs everything else, especially the sexism
The Sorcerer's Apprentice 2010 and 2002 - just bad, I hated both this movies but I preferred the 2020 one.
Pendragon: Sword of his Father - worst movie EVER. This is not an arthurian movie, just Christian propaganda with Arthur in it. It also makes no sense arthurian-wise.
Movies not in the list because they are not out yet:
Kaamelott part 1
Green Knight
Green Knight: The Movie
The Legend of Sir Mordred
Fate Grand/Order the movie
Movies not in the list because I could not find them to watch them or had no time to watch yet:
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarves (not watched yet)

Studio One: Connecticut Yankee (I've watched it too long ago to remember)
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court (the 1949 a d the 1931 ones)
Lancleot du Lac 1970 (it's pretty, but only in French so I did not watch it)
Camelot cartoon 1999 (I've watched but I remember nothing of it)
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (cartoon that I watched but don't remember)
Merlin: The Quest (never found it!)
the 9 movies pre 1921 because I could not find them or were in languages I could not understand

That ominous child
Since everyone seems to argue and hypothesize about the identity of King’s and Diane’s child, and Nakaba can’t be bothered to offer answers, I decided to throw my own hat into the ring. Using The Encyclopedia of Arthurian Legends - the best book EVER - I have devised a list of the ten most interesting and most likely candidates from a variety of Arthurian stories. Most of these have been named by others before, but I’ve come across a few obscure characters that might be worth considering. Five guys, five girls, here we go:
#1 Gawain
I’ve read this take a few times, but honestly, I find him to be an unlikely candidate. As Arthur’s nephew, Gawain has next to no ties to the Fairy Clan (or Faerie if you prefer the old spelling). Gawain also has a track record of becoming an antagonist to Lancelot, including his role in Le morte d’Arthur (Thomas Malory). Could a rivalry between Lancelot and his cousin work in nnt canon? Certainly, but I find it unlikely. I like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (unknown) as much as the next guy, but I have a hard time connecting his personality with either King or Diane. There’s also Gawain’s ability that increases his strength by noon, which is the same as Escanor’s Sunshine. In short, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gawain make an appearance in The Four Knights of the Apocalypse, but not as King’s and Diane’s child.
#2 Perceval (or Percival)
Now, this one’s interesting for two reasons: his ties to the Holy Grail and his origin. In The Story of the Grail (Chrétien de Troyes), Perceval is said to be raised in a forest by his mother, who doesn’t want him to become a knight. With Diane’s natural resentment to fighting for the sake of fighting and after what happened to Lancelot, I could see King and Diane wanting to avoid their child to follow in their footsteps and become a knight. As for the Holy Grail, which shares resemblance to the Fountain of Youth in nnt, Perceval was one of several knights who found the grail. The list includes Gawain, Bors, and Galahad, Lancelot’s son. What makes Perceval stand out among these, however, is that in a continuation of The Story of the Grail (Manessier), he is revealed to be the nephew of the Grail King and he inherits his kingdom after his death. If we consider Ban the Grail King due to his relation to the Fountain of Youth, Perceval might just be the name of his so far unidentified nephew.
#3 Bors
I heard his name being tossed around in conversation a handful of times, mostly because Bors the Younger is Lancelot’s cousin according to Malory. And while Nakaba seems to take a lot of inspiration from Malory when it comes to family relations (look no further than Tristan’s and Lancelot’s parents), in Arthurian Legends, everyone is related to everyone. In the Historia Regum Brittaniae (Geoffrey of Monmouth), Ban’s sister Ivoire is the mother of Uther Pendragon, which makes Lancelot Arthur’s uncle once removed. What I’m trying to say is, Bors is not the only one related to Lancelot. But to be fair, Bors is a Knight of the Round Table, and therefore a companion to Lancelot and Tristan. So, if King’s and Diane’s child is named Bors, it won’t be entirely out of left field.
#4 Oberon
A popular choice for a reason. Oberon is featured in a handful of Arthurian poems as king of the fairies, so he certainly has a connection to King and the Fairy Clan. The only problem I see is that Kings child, no matter who they are, would likely not succeed him as Fairy King. The Sacred Tree makes that choice. Regardless, while Oberon might never be the Fourth Fairy King, he could feature as first prince of the Fairy Clan.
#5 Galehaut
An interesting side character of Le morte d’Arthur (Malory). Why? Because his mother was the giantess Bagota, which makes him a canonical hybrid. His title as ‘the high prince’ would also fit his identity as King’s and Diane’s child. And as a final bonus, Galehaut is a firm friend of Lancelot and through him became a Knight of the Round Table.
#6 Morgan Le Fay
My personal favorite. While she is Arthur’s half-sister in most stories, when she appeared in Vita Merlini (Geoffrey), there is no mention of her blood relation to Arthur. Instead she is said to fly with wings and be able to change her form. Sounds like another Fairy we know, doesn’t it? Morgan learned magic from Merlin, and since the nnt versions of Lancelot and Tristan seem to focus more on physical rather than magical combat, I think it would be nice if King’s and Diane’s child filled that gap. What’s also worth noting about Morgan is her connection to the Fairy King Hellekin, who in Italian romances became better known as Harlequin. In Li Jus Adan (Adam de la Halle), Hellekin is the lover of Morgan Le Fay, and while that sounds weird as an argument in favor of her being King’s daughter in nnt, Nakaba could always ignore this detail. Or Morgan will be the real name of the Lady of the Lake, who knows at this point.
#7 Nimue
Some sources such as Myths of Britain (M. Senior) argue that Nimue is a variant of Vivian, and that they are the same character. Both are typically identified as a Lady of the Lake. Nnt already has a Vivian, and the way she kidnaps Gil and obsesses over him bears resemblance to what Nimue does to Merlin in Le morte d’Arthur (Malory). Then why did I include Nimue? Because Nimue/Vivian is the the granddaughter of the goddess of the wood, who, in the prose of Vulgate Version (unknown), is named Diane.
#8 Iseult (or Isolde)
This one only works if Kiane’s daughter will have a romance with Tristan. I’m not saying that is impossible, but how often does it happen that the the children of friends fall in love? It’s a nice trope, but if King’s and Diane’s daughter were named Iseult, her fate would be a little too predictable. And I guess this would also mean that the Fairy Realm is the equivalent of Ireland... so it works perfectly!
#9 Caelia
My wild card. She is only featured in one work, as far as I know, A Collection of Early English Prose Poems (edit. W.J. Thomas). Caelia is here the Fairy Queen and the lover of Arthur’s illegitimate son, Tom a’Lincoln. So, if Arthur already has a child at the beginning of the sequel, and if said child is in need of a love interest, King’s and Diane’s daughter might just fit the bill. Let’s just hope that nnt Caelia won’t drown herself.
#10 Laudine
Last one, this post is already longer than it has any right to be. In The Knight with the Lion (Chrétien), Laudine is the lady of a magical fountain in the forest of Broceliande. This creates a nice connection to Elaine, doesn’t it? And if the Fairy King’s Forest will somehow find a new Fountain of Youth, perhaps King’s and Diane’s daughter will guard this new fountain, just like Lancelot guarded Benwick in his father’s place. Laudine later became the wife of Owain (or Ywain), another Knight of the Round Table and Arthur’s nephew.
...
Or Nakaba messes with us and picks a random name out of a hat to assign to King’s and Diane’s ominous child.

British LegendsxPokémon
Gawain
As one a pearl doth prize, measured ’gainst pease, tho’ white, So do I hold Gawain above all other knight!
Didst thou a little lack, Sir Knight, in loyalty,
’T was not for woman’s love, or aught of villainy,
’T was but for love of life, therefore I blame thee less—”
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
For the longest time I had Solrock on his team. But I was never 100% comfortable with it because as the Maiden’s Knight I wanted to give Gawain only female Pokémon and Solrock is genderless (I also thought about giving him Braviary but Braviary can only be male). But luckily for me I looked up the Pokémon Species Type (for different reasons) and we have 4 sun/ne Pokémon (which doesn’t include Solrock).
Gringolet, Gawain’s horse has his own Wikipedia article. Not even Owain’s lion has that! Also Gawain’s Scottish, so unicorn. I was debating between Rapidash and Musdale because Gawain does have a story including a donkey. But Musdale is a working horse and Gawain is a knight. Rapidash feels more knightly.
Ponyta was Gawain’s first Pokémon. Gawain had found her in the field grassing. Slowly, the young (let’s say 5) Gawain would go closer to Ponyta every day. He would leave berries for her hoping she would come to him. Ponyta got spooked the few first times but sensing Gawain was kind, she let him come closer. Eventually, she came to Gawain. Once, Gawain tried to pet her, which surprised Ponyta and Gawain got burned. Gawain learned his lesson and the next time, he asked Ponyta’s permission to pet her. She gave him permission.
Neither one of them noticed when Ponyta left the fields and started to sleep in the stables with Gawain, but it didn’t matter. They were each other’s. (I’m going to make Gawain working at the stables for the Pope, ‘cause why not.)
Ponyta and young Gawain worked together and went on adventure together, both loving to explore. With Ponyta, Gawain was able to go places faster and help people. Classic knight errant stuff, but as a preteen.
Ponyta evolved into Rapidash during a joust. Gawain wanted to impress his uncle. Gawain was actually doing very well. He makes it to the end! And he was against a knight on a Rhyhorn. They would have lost if Ponyta didn’t evolve into Rapidash and won them the joust (Yes I am imagining that scene in the anime where Ash riding a Ponyta evolves into a Rapidash.)
The only time Rapidash goes into her pokéball is when Gawain is outside in the rain. But usually she hates her pokéball. Sometimes Gawain more time on her then he does walking.
Her moveset is Stomp, Fire Blitz, Megahorn and Poison Jab.
The Ralts line is partly based on knights. Why Gardevoir and not Gallade? Gallade cannot be female. (Also Gallade works with Guinevere.)
During his explorations, young Gawain and Ponyta found a Ralts in need of help. She was being attacked by a Ferroseed. She was locked into place unable to teleport. Ponyta used ember and the Ferroseed ran away. Gawain brings Ralts “home” aka still the stables in Rome. (Now I’m imagining them using Ralts during mass, it’s adorable in my mind.) Ralts becomes Gawain’s main battler. They sadly lost their first Little Cup tournament. But both of them worked hard and they won their next tournament using confusion!
She evolved into a Kirlia during a tournament, which because she evolved, Gawain was unable to use her. He lost the tournament.
Kirlia wasn’t just used for tournaments but in his adventures Gawain would often use her in battle and to help fight the wild Pokémon.
And in a reference to the Rise of Sir Gawain, Nephew of Arthur, she evolved into Gardevoir during the pirate battle. (I will never not think that’s cool.)
Gardevoir helped Gawain in negotiations when Arthur sent him away to talk with Arthur’s lords or neighbouring kings. Once when the negotiations were going bad, she created a black hole and scared a King in swearing his alliance to Arthur. (She’s still a fairy and they are mischievous.)
Gardevoir’s moveset is Moonblast, Psychic, Thunderbolt and Calm Mind.
When his character is not being butchered, Gawain is often a peace keeper. Leafeon is a piece keeper. Seriously, Platinum Pokédex: It basically does not fight. With cells similar to those of plants, it can perform photosynthesis. Also it gets stronger in the sun, like Gawain. And might be a reference to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, being green.
In the forest of Italy (because honestly it’s Arthuriana and the forest is magical and Pokémon has tons of Pokémon in the forest), while training Ralts, they found an Eevee sunbathing. Gawain decided to catch her. Eevee was more peaceful and she didn’t battle unless she had to. Though once a Surskit was bullying Ponyta, Ponyta kept trying to stomp on it but it wasn’t working. Eevee tackled the Surskit helping her friend.
In the Magical Forest of Adventure, Eevee had the nighttime munchies and found a mossy rock. Everyone was very surprised the next morning when Leafeon was sleeping with them. They blamed fairies.
Leafeon didn’t change much in personality. She is still very protective of her family and Gawain. Maybe some times a little to protective, getting revenge on people that wronged them.
Her moves are Leaf Blade, Sword Dance, X-Scissor and Synthesis.
Yes, based on both Mexican wrestlers and Aztec Eagle Warriors (seriously) doesn’t match a medieval knight, he is a hawk. And Gwalchmai may (there’s debate) mean Hawk of May.
After getting knighted Sir Gawain from the Pope, Gawain went back home to find his family. He met with Morgause and Lot and Agravaine and Gaheris and Soredamour. There was a family tradition when the child turn 13, they give them an egg of a flying type. Lot gave Gawain a Pokémon an egg, which hatched into a Hawlucha (I know Hawlucha is in the human-like egg group but magic was involved). Gardevoir and Leafeon were mainly her mothers. I’m also imagining Gawain and Hawlucha practicing fighting moves together. Gawain once wrestled Agravain and Gaheris at the same time using moves he learned from Hawlucha.
Hawlucha loved to tournaments. She made a septicle of the whole thing, which made her popular with the crowd as well. Though, sometimes she got into her own head and while showboating she got hit.
Her moveset is Sky Attack, Hi Jump Kick, Flying Press and Stone Edge.
Did you know Espeon is the Sun Pokémon? It also matches Mordred's Umbreon (spoilers).
Gawain was making a name for himself not just in the tournament scene but also in the adventure scene (sure he had a little hiccup with Owain/Morholt/Gawain maiden adventure but generally it was very positive). While on an adventure, Gawain slept with a woman who’s Vaporeon really liked Leafeon. Leafeon gave birth to two Eevees. Gawain kept one but gave the other to his little brother Mordred who was starting his Pokémon adventure. Eevee was easier to raise then Hawlucha for Leafeon. Eevee was always quick learning and loved to sleep with Gawain at night (which she kept doing after evolving). Some nights Gawain found her on his face sleeping (this did not continue after evolution).
Eevee evolved pretty quickly, like I said quick learning. On a bright day, resting from travel, Gawain was playing with Eevee. He threw a stick and the stick stopped in mid air. Having so much fun, Eevee evolved into an Espeon. (Basically the Eevees evolve in nontraditional ways.)
Espeon liked tournaments and showing off her precognition powers (blame it on Hawlucha’s influence).
Her moveset is Psychic, Shadow Ball, Toxic and Future Sight
Did you know that Volcarona is the Sun Pokémon? It’s partly based on sun spots.
Gawain heard about this magical Pokémon in ancient ruins. So, naturally it was adventure time (the theme of this post). He went to the ruins. It’s full of ghost and maybe a legendary? No, it was just a Volcarona. Not what was expected but still welcomed. There was a fight, where Gardevoir hits the final blow. It was as epic as any legendary battle.
After catching Volcarona, the ruins no longer caught fire randomly. So, the neighbouring town was very happy.
Volcarona like the Pokémon Dex entries say, she likes helping people and Pokémon. But, when angered, she is very dangerous.
Her moves are Fiery Dance, Bug Buzz, Quiver Dance and Heat Wave

(In response to this post.)
@sensicalabsurdities, I hope you don’t mind me replying like this! It’s just easier than reblogging the whole long post again.
The issue of whether there’s a historical basis for Arthur is a fascinating one, although not one I’ll be going into that much in depth on this blog since I’m both more knowledgeable and more interested in Arthur as a legend than what the actual historical facts may have been.
There definitely was a significant oral tradition around Arthur, though - something I’ll be getting into more when we get to some of the Welsh stories and references to him. The earliest reference we have to Arthur is in a c. 7th-century poem called Y Gododdin, which just passingly uses him for a comparison, on the clear expectation that the audience would already know who he was and what the comparison implied.
A lot of Welsh mythology was originally oral in fact, which makes it really hard to trace what the stories originally started as and who influenced whom when the stories came to be written down. (This is particularly relevant when we talk about the Arthurian stories collected in what’s come to be known as the Mabinogion, such as the Three Welsh Romances and Culhwch and Olwen.)
When it comes to historical Arthur though... my best guess, based on what I’ve read, is that he probably was based on a real person, but that real person and his life story were near-unrecognizably different from the King Arthur legend as we know. As we’ll see when we get to the Arthur mention in Historia Brittonum, he may not even have been a king, or even nobly born. I think the basic fact of there being a Briton leader named Arthur (or something similar) who won some significant victories against the Saxons is probably true, and there may also be a historical basis for some of the earliest mentioned Arthurian characters, like Guinevere, Mordred, Gawain, Kay, and Bedivere.
Interestingly, two Arthurian characters we know for a fact are based on historical people are Urien of Rheged (who gets turned into Morgan le Fay’s husband in later traditions), and his son Owain mab Urien, known variously in Arthurian literature as Sir Owain, Sir Ywain, and Sir Yvain. (The real Owain probably didn’t have an army of ravens, and/or a lion companion, like his Arthurian counterpart though. Which is disappointing.)

It’s absolutely a crime that they never gave Owain a lion motif (or like, a pet cat) since his namesake, Sir Owain (one of the knights of the round table) is famous for keeping a lion as a pet.

Also I really love Owain’s name because it’s also the name of (or at least an alternate spelling for the name of) one of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table.
A cool thing about Sir Ywain/Owain was that in some stories he had a literal lion as a companion.
Another another interesting thing is that in many retellings he’s either the nephew of King Auguselus of Albany, or the nephew of King Arthur himself, and is often stated to succeed his uncle as King following his death : )

Yvain: The Knight of the Lion
A Movie Fancast + Summary
Yvain (Skandar Keynes) and Morfydd* (Morfydd Clark), the twin children of Morgan le Fay (Marion Cotillard), grow up deeply devoted to their mother but increasingly struggle with conflicting loyalties and the emergence of their own mysterious powers. When Yvain becomes a knight of the Round Table, his growing respect for his uncle, King Arthur, and his increasingly close friendship with his cousin Sir Gawain (Luke Pasqualino) both call his allegiances into question.
Still dedicated to his mother, but increasingly disillusioned with her campaign against Arthur, Yvain struggles to balance his divided loyalties until he becomes implicated as an accomplice in one of his mother’s plots and finds himself exiled from Camelot. Though Gawain steadfastly joins his exile in solidarity, Yvain ultimately finds himself on his own, rejected by his uncle and the court he was beginning to think of as home, yet continually at odds with his mother and her plans.
As Yvain struggles to find his place in the world, he gains unexpected allies along the way. When he comes across a lion and a snake fighting, his choice to save the lion gains him a devoted companion for life. And his encounter with the renowned Sir Bedivere (Idris Elba) leaves him with new insights about his magical heritage. When he returns to Camelot to find his mother and aunt Morgause (Rachel Weisz) on the verge of successfully overthrowing Arthur, the newly reunited Yvain and Morfydd must make the ultimate choice as the fate of Camelot hangs in the balance...
*Since I’m using the Anglicized character names here (Yvain rather than Owain, Gawain rather than Gwalchmai, and so on), Morfydd technically doesn’t fit the pattern. However, this is because Morfydd’s character only exists in the earlier Welsh tradition, so she has no Anglicized equivalent like the other characters do. If I was actually making this movie, I’d probably give her an Anglicized name like the others, but I’d have to do more research to find an appropriate equivalent.
(Also, I didn’t entirely cast Morfydd Clark because of her name... but it definitely didn’t hurt. :-P)
