Lets talk about Ferelden nobility. Their marriage would be an insanely good political alliance -- the two teyrnirs of Ferelden uniting? Cailan should be quaking in his boots. You said she would eat him alive??? I am desperate for more elaboration.

hi!! this is a sideblog too so no worries! but yeah cailan absolutely should be worried but the best part is, at least in my little au, he’s like…. 12 when all this is happening so all he really knows is that uncle loghain is leaving him (and anora) and it’s gonna be a while before they can see each other again :( it’s really maric that should be worried (and is) because he had to make a lot of concessions to the couslands for bryce and eleanor to be okay letting their baby girl go clean up maric’s mess (even if she really wanted it for spite reasons).

Tl;dr siobhan cousland was planning a coup from jump because she was raised to be queen and got told no and then maric dropped the perfect opportunity in her lap with a bow and his blessing, loghain was both collateral and a prize

siobhan in this au was born before the occupation technically ended and so her parents, still in the rebellion mindset of “ferelden first” was sort of groomed to believe that she’d one day be queen of ferelden because she’s the only noble girl within marrying age of cailan right up until anora is born and maric and/or rowan lose their minds. the couslands are Important, second to only the royal family and that shows in siobhan’s upbringing- she’s very politically minded, everything is duty/responsibility/optics with her and that’s something that (imo) would and should drive loghain crazy.

Politically on paper, her and loghain are an amazing match after celia dies right up until we remember that a) the couslands have already married their son and heir to a well known/regarded antivan trading family creating ties to a foreign, unallied country without the crowns express permission right after a war and b) loghain for all his accomplishments is not a man made for politics in any capacity that man is a Follower, he’s the type of person that need to be wholly devoted to a person/cause and c) uniting the only two surviving teyrnir’s is actually a recipe for disaster because oh my god why would you even think that maric that’s giving your subjects too much power and influence even with ferelden’s weird political structure

and siobhan knows this!! she knows that the people of gwaren don’t feel safe or supported by their teyrn and abandoned by their king and she’s also been personally slighted by the crown twice now!! so she graciously concedes to step in and throw the weight of her name around to build gwaren back up to the prominence it once had before the occupation gutted the city all while subtly reminding people that it was the couslands that actually care about the people of ferelden, its cousland gold bolstering the economy, its cousland trading partners bringing ships back into port without even saying anything because she’s a mac tir now after all that would just be gauche to rely on her maiden family name. its siobhan that runs the show and every single person in gwaren knows it, loghain is just insurance in the beginning (before whoops they’re actually in love your honor)

Siobhan Hawke - no actual sword use, completely vibes, I just love her so much I couldn't leave her out. All black for Kirkwall, dripping with blood and chains for Symbolism and more Kirkwall

Nika Brosca - a dual wielder, so actual sword use! But the design, particularly the glowy lyrium blade, is all vibes. The hilt wrapped up in fabric with scraps hanging off the end is allllll dust town though. My scrappy Carta girl :3

Ariya Tabris - sword use Optional™️, only when she can't get her hands on proper daggers or an axe, until she has Vigilance. The design here is mostly vibes, especially the black vines up the blade for the Blight.

Ciel Andras - (everyone: Andras? me: the orlesian warden commander that bioware forgot ;-;) my Actual Sword user, a sword and board warrior! The sword here is literal, silverite for the blade and blue on the hilt and grip for the Wardens. Plus the hilt that I thought was close enough to Wing Imagery without being butterfly wings, and the black veins in the blade for, you guessed it, Blight Symbolism.

Ember Cousland - another dual wield sword user (sensing a type here hmmmm) and it's definitely with her family's sword no I don't care that the stats bottom out so fast. The hilt design here is to represent that, with the mirrored wheat design of the Cousland heraldry, but the on-fire blade is 100% vibes, a representation of her vengeance against the Howes.

Character Spotlight — Warden Commander Siobhan Cousland

Leading up to Veilguard I’m going to be posting some Character Spotlights of my various dragon age PCs!

Up first is Warden Commander Siobhan Cousland

- Siobhan is roughly 5’11” and one of the tallest of my characters.

- She’s well trained and respectful, but she’s much more likely to tumble with a stranger than care about politics.

- She accidentally lead Alistair on due to him misunderstanding something she said. She did like him, but she wasn’t ready for something serious after what happened to her family, and she didn’t want to hurt him with that.

- Eamon sprung the possibility of her being queen at her in front of the others and she nearly had a panic attack. She did genuinely consider it, but decided against it.

- She didn’t intend to fall for Zevran but she fell anyway. When he confessed his own surprising feelings she was extremely delighted.

- Her brother was her best friend growing up and she never once thought about the fact he might not have survived. Even if it was unrealistic, she couldn’t bear the thought. (Thankfully, she was right)

- When she introduced Zevran to her brother, she was worried he’d be skeptical. Fergus took one look at him and said “He’s perfect for you.” And sent them on their way with his blessing and a promise for sanctuary in Highever should they ever be REALLY in trouble with the crows.

- Siobhan really latched on to Wynne. Was it the trauma of losing their parents? Perhaps! But they took Wynne pretty much everywhere with them.

- Siobhan is surprisingly Sentimental. Even though she’s a two-handed warrior, she kept the Cousland sword and eventually gave it to Zevran to dual wield with. He was honoured and kept it in tip-top shape until they could return it to Fergus and Castle Cousland.

- Siobhan met Hawke and her friends outside Kirkwall with Zevran and gave Anders an earful for scaring them with his fake death. Hawke never let him hear the end of it after that.

- In Inquisition, Siobhan and Zevran were guests at the Winter Palace, where they joined up with the inquisitor to help, and then ventured back to Skyhold with everyone until endgame. After that they resumed their quest to cure the calling.

Alistair Fic WIP

Never done this before, but here’s a WIP of my first Alistair fic. This fic will be smutty (surprise surprise), but this snippet isn’t anything too crazy.

Siobhan smiled gently in understanding as she offered what she hoped would be a helpful solution, “What if I removed my towel first? Would that be alright?”

Would that be alright? It would be far more than just alright. He’d been aching to see her bared before him for weeks; perhaps even since the first day they’d met.

“Maker, yes,” He breathed, eyes flickering down to where her hands gripped the fuzzy material surrounding her.

Slowly, she unwound the towel, revealing more and more of her creamy, fair skin until it was falling to the floor at his feet, leaving her entirely bare.

Alistair’s breath hitched, heart pounding so hard that he could hear it in his ears.

There she stood, his fierce warrior, his Siobhan, naked as the day she was born and waiting for him to join her in the water.

His hands were screaming at him to reach out and touch her, his feet begging to carry him forward, but he was stunned, captivated by the sight of her. The only part of him that seemed to be capable of doing anything were his eyes, which had already begun to wander down her form.

His cock seemed to be fully functional as well, now completely hard and throbbing in his trousers, but he was much too focused on the lovely pair of breasts in front of him to pay it any mind.

Siobhan blushed. Despite her sexual experience, she still found herself feeling shy standing nude before Alistair. Never had she had a man like him, one that she wanted to impress, one that she truly cared for. His approval meant everything to her, and knowing that he liked what he saw pleased her immensely.

“I’m sure that you are as well underneath those clothes,” She teased, hands itching to reach out and unlace those cotton trousers that seemed to be just a tad too tight in the front, “Would you like some help?”

Alistair cleared his throat as he shook his head lightly, eyes flickering upwards to meet hers, “Allow me, my dear. You make yourself comfortable,”

She did just that, sinking down into the warm, bubbly water with a pleased sigh while Alistair made himself busy with removing his shirt. Off it went as she leaned back against the wall of the tub, revealing a broad, muscular chest and a deliciously toned abdomen. His torso was littered with scars, some of which she’d stitched herself, and all of which she was tempted to trace with her fingertips and tongue.

Her eyes found his hands as they began unlacing the trousers, revealing the fabric of his smalls. She could spy the rigid outline of his erection hidden beneath it all, straining and begging for release. Absentmindedly, she began chewing on her bottom lip in anticipation of it popping free.

Note — This revised history of the Couslands and Mac Eanraigs is developed alongside Wren Cousland, Bryce Cousland, and Eleanor Cousland, found at @imageofdeparture, and Henry Greengrass and Daphne Greengrass, found at @acciortum. I am writing Margaery Cousland, Fergus Cousland, and Cassandra MacEanraig myself, both at @worldevoured. Unless writing with a male or nonbinary Cousland, this will be my default backstory, even if writing with another Hero of Ferelden.

The Mac Eanraigs and the Greengrasses

     The patriarch of the Greengrass family, Edward Greengrass, was a staunch supporter of Meghren’s reign in Ferelden, and a constant ally to Orlais. One of the noble families in Amaranthine, the Greengrasses had always just barely missed becoming titled, and Edward saw an opportunity to gain one of the bannorns stripped from the various Fereldan lords and ladies who rebelled against the Orlesian occupation. When it became clear that the Howes would continue to hold Amaranthine, Edward turned his attention to the Storm Coast, where Fearchair Mac Eanraig and his wife Moira ruled the Bannorn. 

     It wasn’t hard to convince Meghren to strip the Mac Eanraigs of their title; they had been involved in active rebellion for years, now, with all four of their children becoming threats in their own right. Meghren made the Mac Eanraigs an offer: Fearchar and Moira would have no claim to the land or title, but one of their daughters ( Cassandra, the eldest ) could remain Bann if she married an Orlesian appointee to the title. Arthur Greengrass, Edward’s oldest son, was chosen, but he died of a fever shortly before he was scheduled to meet his betrothed, and his younger brother, Henry Greengrass, was sent in his stead. Henry and Cassandra were married.

     Edward was pleased to see a Greengrass as Bann, but his plan — and Meghren’s — ultimately failed when, shortly after meeting his wife and her family, Henry, along with his illegitimate half-sister Siobhan, joined the Mac Eanraigs in active rebellion against the Orlesian occupation. Henry fought alongside his wife’s family, including his brother-in-law, Bryce Cousland, until Meghren was overthrown and Maric Theirin was restored to the throne. He enjoyed his wife’s, and her family’s, respect for several years, through the birth of a daughter, until, years later, it came to light that he’d had a brief affair with an Antivan noblewoman, Veronica Grimani, whom he clearly loved — and who, upon returning to Antiva, bore him a daughter. 

     When he learned of this, Henry simply left, and was gone for just over a year while he traveled to meet his daughter, Astoria Grimani. When he had been assured that she was well cared for, and in fact in line for a title of her own in addition to lands and wealth from her mother’s family, Henry returned to the Storm Coast, which his scorned wife had been managing beautifully in his absence. His relationship with the MacEanraig siblings, especially Eleanor — now Eleanor Cousland — had been destroyed, and while Cassandra remained furious with him for the personal and political embarrassment, over the course of several years, they were able to resume a working marriage, though any real love for one another was gone. They were cordial, and worked beautifully together politically, and there was even hope that they could become friends once more, someday.  

Astoria’s Arrival in Ferelden 

     Astoria and her father maintained as close a relationship as they could through her childhood and teenage years, writing often and visiting when they could. One of Astoria’s fondest memories was visiting Denerim with her grandfather when she was six years old, hoping to negotiate a trade agreement with King Maric; Henry met them there, spending as much time with her in Denerim as he could spare. She remembers Henry introducing her to Maric, and hanging on her father’s hand. 

     When she began her studies in Orlais, Astoria wrote to her father again, this time to tell him the full story of what had happened to her while under the Vetris’ control. She told him that she was hesitant to return to Antiva during holidays from university, and asked if she could come to stay with him in the Storm Coast, and Henry immediately agreed. Her arrival was tense for everyone but father and daughter — Cassandra was hardly pleased at the arrival of her husband’s bastard daughter, but she saw no value in taking her anger out on a child, and her relationship with Henry soured more with each visit. Henry was pleased to be with his daughter, pleased even more to realize that Astoria was his mirror: they shared the thick red curls that the Greengrasses passed from generation to generation, darker than any of the red hair on her mother’s side; she set her jaw and her shoulders in the same way he did when he was angry; she picked up his accent whenever she spoke Common. She was a stark contrast to her half-sister; Daphne had inherited her mother’s blonde hair and light eyes, and was far gentler than either of her parents. Henry, certain that his younger daughter needed him more now, shifted all of his focus to Astoria whenever she came to visit. 

     The Couslands, Eleanor especially, were sensitive to the insult not only to Cassandra, but to Daphne, and while they made no effort to exclude Astoria — raised in Antiva, educated in Orlais, clearly built more for a life of hedonism than hard work, and training in the bardic arts simply for something to pass the time and to play at real danger — they did make an effort to remind Cassandra and Daphne that they were welcome in Highever, and among their family. Astoria’s own Antivan attitude toward marriage likely did little to endear her to them — Antivans took lovers, and if a marriage was made for politics rather than love, why did it matter? Henry had been happy, as had her mother, and Henry remained to fulfill his political duties. She wouldn’t inherit any of her father’s land, wealth, or title; she was referred to as Lady while in Ferelden only because of her grandfather’s role as Merchant Prince of Seleny, and the expectation that she would take on the role herself when her grandfather died. 

     Astoria’s teenage years were spent at least somewhat in the company of the Cousland children. Fergus, the eldest, found her interesting, but largely tried to stay out of it, as did his father. His wife was Antivan, and Astoria and Oriana very much enjoyed one another’s company, and having the opportunity to reminisce over a well-loved homeland. Margaery was less friendly to the idea of Astoria, defensive of her aunt’s and cousin’s honor and happiness; she was polite, if a bit icy, until the year before Astoria concluded her studies, when she began to warm to her. Wren followed her mother’s lead, concerned about Daphne especially, but found the bardic-trained Astoria more interesting than she would let on. For her part, Astoria grew very fond of the entire family, returning for each visit with carefully chosen gifts for everyone; she especially adored her sister, and made every effort to connect with her. 

     To Cassandra’s relief, Astoria never tried to make any play for the bannorn — even as a teenager, it was clear that Astoria was clever, and didn’t always play fair, and Henry’s obvious favoring of his younger daughter could have posed a threat to Daphne’s future. However, Astoria’s unshakeable love for her sister — and growing respect for Cassandra — made her unwilling to even consider the prospect. It was the first major test of Astoria’s ambition versus her loyalty to her family, and her family won out, as they would for the rest of her life.

The Fifth Blight

     If Wren is the Hero of Ferelden — When Astoria finds Wren in Redcliffe, she is ecstatic to be reunited with a woman she considers family, but horrified to learn of the Couslands’ murders. When they reach Denerim, she hires spies to locate any survivors: Wren saw her parents’, and Oriana’s and Oren’s, bodies; she didn’t see Margaery’s. After months of digging, Margaery is found, one of Howe’s prisoners, and Astoria informs Wren as soon as she’s made aware. 

     Regardless of the Hero of Ferelden’s identity, she sends a letter to her father when she reaches Denerim, coded using a cipher she taught him a few years before during one of her visits, letting him know where she is and what she’s doing, and that he will need to prepare for civil war. By the time of the Landsmeet, Henry is in Denerim; when he and Astoria are reunited, they are inseparable for a long while as she tells him everything that’s happened. Unless the Hero of Ferelden asks her to come into the city with them, Astoria fights alongside her father, and the Storm Coast’s forces. After the Blight, she stays in Denerim if Alistair becomes King; if he does not, she goes directly to the Storm Coast, and remains there for a few years before she returns to Seleny. When she invites Henry to come with her, he does, and he and Veronica are reunited after more than twenty-five years.

currently building a clusterfuck of a worldstate that isn’t technically a multi-warden AU (there will only be...one or two wardens of my design) and hoo boy

- Oona and Siobhan Cousland, Vahari and Mioluvun Mahariel, Sol Amell, Jacqueline Léonne Maçon (a blood mage), prooobably adding in Brienna and Feroni Tabris, will also probably add in an Aeducan and Brosca (at least one of whom must be a man b/c I...love making women oc’s,,, ^^;, )

- Jowan is also here b/c of Sol and Jack,,

- when the plot gets to Awakening, I’ll add at least one of my Orlesian wardens (probably Celeste Caron, which means adding Yvonne Andras as well, they’re inseparable/escaped a Circle together, and while Lilian (Celeste’s older sister) exists she might not make an appearance, since I’ll have a Warden Commander of Ferelden to use and Orlais won’t send her)
