Coffee Break with a Cute Camo Guy...Then Crickets

Hey Maybe Nots and Maybe Yeses! Buckle up for another installment in the thrilling (and sometimes confusing) world of dating app roulette. 

Today's episode involves a military guy, a late-night rendezvous, and a disappearing act worthy of a ninja master (again, because apparently vanishing acts are a recurring theme in my dating life).

We all know the drill: swipe left, swipe right, pray for a match that isn't a catfish or a profile with all the personality of a wet sock. It's a roller-coaster, let me tell you. The gorgeous specimens with bios shorter than a haiku (do you think they’re too good to be true? They usually are). The verified hotties who vanish faster than snow in the summer sun (because they never reply to messages). The pretty decent profiles with interesting details that fizzle out in a flurry of awkward messages (because apparently, conversation skills are a rare commodity these days). And of course, the ones you just skip because, well, self-respect is a thing.

But then, there are the rare diamonds in the rough. Like this military fella – decent looking (by my discerning standards, of course), who actually replied to my message, and kept the conversation flowing like a well-oiled machine. The only snag (that wasn't his camouflage pants)? His schedule was about as predictable as a toddler on a sugar rush. Mine, with its late-night delights, wasn't exactly a walk in the park either.

So, picture this: a fine night (Dun dun DUNNNN!) at 2 AM (of course!), and there he is, gracing my workplace with his presence. We talked for a whole hour – no fireworks this time, let's just say public smooching at 2 AM isn't exactly the office dress code – but the conversation was surprisingly engaging. 

Afterwards, the messages kept flowing. My hopes for a second date were definitely piqued. But then, our text exchange, once lively, began to fade like a dying campfire, like a forgotten bag of chips at the back of the pantry. Poof! Silence. Crickets. Tumbleweeds. The usual.

Finally, I gathered my courage and (gasp!) initiated a conversation - the last one, or so I said. Shocking, I know. Apparently, he was surprised it was the "last message." Busy at work, he claimed, with no time for his phone (interestingly, the same app where he religiously viewed my stories suddenly offered zero connection for basic messaging. Maybe they have a special "stalk-but-don't-talk" feature?). So, I did what any self-respecting Maybe Not would do – I stopped wasting my energy and time.

One more soldier down in the battle of dating. But hey, chin up, love warriors! There are plenty more swipes in the sea, land and skies, and who knows, maybe next time I'll find a guy who understands the concept of both communication and basic human connection. Until then, let's keep the faith (and the sarcasm flowing)!

I’m legitimately tired of being very unimportant to anyone I enter a relationship with, for once I want to be fought for instead of being the one fighting, matter of fact I don’t want to have to fight. A Lot to Remember

Have you ever heard me quote Carrie Underwood’s single “Wasted” before? There is a part in her song, the chorus actually, that goes like this:

“I don't wanna spend my life jaded Waiting to wake up one day and find That I let all these years go by wasted”

One of my fears that I’ve had since I can remember is going through life not accomplishing anything. With my personality, it’s easy to do. I often can’t finish my sentence before starting another topic, so getting from one huge accomplishment to the next is daunting. 

Today, I woke up and realized something. What stops me from completing a task? What stops me from making another bucket list item from coming to fruition? The answer was always there, even friends have told me the answer before; however, if I didn’t accept the answer then there must have been something else stopping me. I’ve used excuses like: finances, impossible, working a retail job with late hours. Truth is what has stopped me has always been: me. I stop myself from succeeding. All those other excuses were probably true, but that doesn’t stop the source from being: me. So don’t let my experience, be your wasted years.

I was walking home from the coffee shop today and thinking to myself of what I’ve accomplished. When I was younger, living in Small Town USA(also a great experience), I dreamed of so many things. I was going to do them all and then I grew up and accepted that those were DREAMS. Dreams that never make it to reality. Since realizing I can turn those dreams into reality, I’ve accomplished a lot. I wanted to move out of Small Town USA and move to a bigger city. This could have been easily accomplished by moving to New Orleans, LA. I didn’t live far away. But I want more than want Louisiana could offer. I wanted the west coast because I dreamt of it since I was little. Well, I can check that off the bucket list. I, not only visited the west coast, but I currently live in Los Angeles. I’ve also lived in Philadelphia, visited Louisville, KY, Lancaster, PA (or Amish country), partied hard in New York City, Washington D.C., and San Diego. I’ve hiked in Griffith Park, hiked up to the Golden Gate Bridge, spent Thanksgiving in Lake Tahoe and the Great Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. I’ve traveled across the country and checked off 26 states. I’ve accomplished a lot for this little ol’ Small Town USA boy and I’m not done. That’s just traveling.

I’ve met some amazing people along the way, people I hope are in my life for forever. I’ve also done some of these amazing things with friends I’ve had for years and will be there to whatever end--friends who’ve helped me get to where I am today and I owe a thank you that can’t be expressed enough with just words.

I know 2018 hasn’t begun and I won't make these my “New Years Resolutions” because we all know how those hold up. So let’s keep this positivity going.
