Zoste Patrikia: A Middle Byzantine Propoloma Accessory for TYAEF.
It’s a new year, and I’m back on my Byzantine nonsense as a break from the texturing long-haul of the bustle project and to give myself a quick “ooh fancy fancy” project. So have a propoloma as a Tres Reyes/Epiphany/Twelfth Night gift!
What is a Propoloma?
During the early Byzantine empire, the “propoloma” was a simple turban, as seen on the iconic mosaic of Theodora in Ravenna (1). While most depictions show it on courtiers or saints, because Byzantine art tended to focus on courtiers and saints, it is by no means improbable that a Byzantine woman with enough fabric and time on her hands could give herself a nice turban to wear. It could be worn by itself, if the fabric was nice enough, or worn under a veil.
By the 10th century, it had somehow transformed into a fascinating trapezoidal/pyramidal cone, usually worn over one’s maforion, or over one’s hair, whether worn loose or styled (2). This ‘new’ propoloma was almost certainly a court headdress or upper-class headdress, if only for reasons of practicality.
The propoloma was usually white, although the zoste patrikia--the Empress’ most high-ranking lady-in-waiting--wore hers with a purple stripe, and ladies of the Imperial family wore theirs in solid purple (1). Because this is the Sims, of course, you can make yours neon pink with zebra stripes if you so desire.
Although a propoloma of a similar shape and orientation on the head is worn in a Byzantine depiction of David’s entry into Jerusalem, as illustrated in the 1082 Vatican Psalter (3), and in the iconic Venetus A illuminated manuscript of the Illiad, circa 900-1000 (4), I would like to clarify that this is probably not the most historically accurate shape or style! Most reconstructions (e.g. Levantia and Anna’s New Rome) show the propoloma as fitted around the wearer’s head (1, 2). However, it’s extant, it’s documented, and I think it has a certain charm, so I’m sharing this with all of you.
I did not create this mesh; I took it from Bipsouille’s TS2 Star Wars: The Phantom Menace hair. You can see the original here; as you can probably tell, I took off the danglies and the earmuffs, and retextured it so that the propoloma is now fabric-textured instead of hair-textured. I also removed the original overlays and created five masks; the “x” and diagonal stripe are from the eleventh century (1001-1100) and the horizontal stripes and horizontal stripes with bezants are from the twelfth century (1101-1200) (5). I am unsure if the original Star Wars headdress was inspired by Manchu liangbatou headdresses, Russian kokoshniks, or a combination of the two, as I am not familiar with all the varieties of either of those headdresses.
Download your propoloma here!
Important Information
Polycount 86 Vertices, 168 Faces.
Bone Assignment Head Dome.
Recolorable? Yes, with one, two, or three channels depending on the mask. The mesh is curved, so some patterns may not “read” successfully.
Ages and Genders Teen through Elder females. You may use NRAAS or another mod to make this available for teen through elder males!
Categories Found in “Earrings” under Everyday, Formal, Career (for courtiers, of course), Makeover, and Maternity.
Custom Thumbnail? No, sorry!
EPs Necessary Base Game Compatible.

15 QUESTIONS FOR 15 MUTUALS (tag game).
Thanks for the tag @antiquatedplumbobs & @viktorviolettaenterprises.
Are you named after anyone? Vivienne Westwood, British designer. My mother has always loved fashion (in fact she was a seamstress before retiring).
When was the last time you cried? If we mean tears of joy, when my nephew was born a few days ago. Tears of grief when my uncle died about a year ago.
Do you have kids? Not yet, but I hope one day to have at least one (unfortunately not everyone has a baby right away and I've been married for 8 years).
Do you use sarcasm a lot? It depends on the topic and if it's appropriate. I always try not to offend anyone.
What sports do you play/have you played? As a child I did classical dance but then at the age of 15 I had an accident which unfortunately didn't allow me to continue this passion. Now I do yoga (it's not a sport but it's an activity I love).
What’s the first thing you notice about other people? The eyes ... Every human being has different colors and I love observing the various details that distinguish people.
Eye colour? Cerulean, if it rains it goes on dark green, if there is sun it goes on amber.
Scary movies or happy endings? On film? Reading? 😶...
Any special talents? I love making desserts and cakes and luckily I'm good at it 🤣.
Where were you born? France
What are your hobbies? Listen music, read historical novels and vintage magazines on old fashions, the sims (from the very first to 4).
Do you have any pets? Yes, I have a super cute mixed breed cat!
How tall are you? 170 cm.
Favourite subject in school? Art! Always loved even when I travel. I love exploring old churches or palaces, museums... My former high school professor was very good at his work and I have to thank him if to this day I remember what a Corinthian column or pediment is or Byzantine art or belle époque!
Dream job? I don't know, I've had various jobs but perhaps my dream would have been to become a screenwriter and write a vintage-style TV series or film...
I chose to tag no one! Feel free to skip this quiz or take it 😅

Top 5 video games?
For a second I thought, 'Oh this will be easy!' and then I realised, wait, do I need to distinguish between all the main-series Pokemon games?? Halp! But I'll do my best:
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind: This was the first Elder Scrolls game I played so it was my introduction to the series and its (utterly bonkers) lore, and to Bethesda games in general. I love how different it is from standard 'medieval-Europe' fantasy worlds and I love that I can play as an awesome dinosaur-lizard lady. I also love the guar. <3 I do not love cliff racers, which are pure swooping evil bastards, but at least you can mod them out. I haven't replayed it in a few years but nostalgia keeps it at number 1.
Pokemon X: It's honestly a toss-up between X, Red/Blue, and Platinum; I got Red waaay back in 1999 or 2000 (Mr Bear got Blue) and played it every day on the bus to and from work in the months before our wedding. Platinum was the one that got me really back into it after not getting a GBA or the first generation DS. But I'm giving it to X because I really enjoyed playing it, because I still think Mega Evolutions have been the best generational gimmick to date, and because it was the first one to introduce more character creation which I think is great. (Bonus for what remains of being a Francophile after living in the UK for 20+ years.)
World of Warcraft: Outing myself as a basic bench here, but I think I have to hand it to WoW for the sheer amount of hours I've pumped in and the fact I owe so many of my closest friends to it. Once upon a time I would have put Lord of the Rings Online in this place, but I've retired from LOTRO (my kin basically dried up and the game systems are - is Byzantine the word I want? - hella complicated, anyway) and WoW has sucked me back in yet again with friendship, dragons, and a Pokemon-lite minigame.
Animal Crossing New Horizons: aka 'The Pandemic Game'. I loved Wild World, and I loved New Leaf even more, so of course I love New Horizons - I even got the Happy Home Paradise DLC. Plus it's the game that led to me meeting you, @ricochetoconnell! So now it's on the list forever. ❤
The Sims 3: I have spent a silly number of hours playing this and designing houses, patterns, furniture, characters, gardens, etc. I don't even want to think how much I've spent in total across expansions and Store content (although I did get some stuff free with points or when they were doing specials.) Also I make my blorbos and then make them kiss. I should check out 4 at some point; the lack of create-a-style put me off but I've seen people making stunning builds in it.
Runner-up: Stardew Valley - what's not to love about that game??

The Great Palace of SimCity (by ColovianHastur)
This residential lot is based on a section of the Great Palace of Constantinople (also called the Sacred Palace). Or rather, it is based on a section of a hypothetical reconstruction of the Great Palace, which you can see in the image below. The section I mentioned is inside the red rectangle.
As it would be impossible to recreate the entire palace due to its sheer size, I had to pick an area to recreate, and so I elected this one. And since I only had the exterior reconstructions to work with, the interior had to be based on a loose interpretation of Byzantine Roman and Latin Roman architecture and homes. Mostly, that is (there's an abominable lack of proper mosaics in this game).
The lot contains the basic essential features of a residential lot - kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms, as well as other rooms. In any case, I'm including below a "flavourful description" of the palace complex and a bit of its history. This was written as a companion to a career I made a few years ago and uploaded to Mod the Sims called "Neo-Roman Administration", which presents a different history and government of Simladonia (which is actually a canon name for the SimNation) Unfortunately, I have not yet updated said career to the latest version of TS4.
You can place this lot anywhere, but it is meant to be placed in Windenburg.
Type: Residential
Size: 64x64
Lot Value: 387,805
Custom Content: None
Image Gallery: Here
Warnings:
Activate "bb.moveobjects on" BEFORE placing down the lot.
The columns in the throne room should NOT be in the platform, but be sunk into it. For some reason, placing down the lot raises them. You can easily fix this by grabbing them and putting them down again.

Great Palace of SimCity
During the Colonial period, in the site of the Great Palace stood a Peteran monastery that was later taken over by the Eastern Jacoban Church. Although the Peteran chapel was demolished and an Eastern Jacoban church was built in its place, the Jacobans were forced to leave after all religious orders were extinguished in Simladonia. The newly acclaimed emperor - Michael I Kalaphates, the son a Greek caulker who immigrated to the New World - ordered the remaining structures to be restored and to be unified into a great palace, modelled after a section of the legendary Great Palace of Constantinople. Once complete, the Great Palace was composed of three different sections - the Kyanotriklinos, the Palace of Chloris, and the Imperial Polyandreion.
The Kyanotriklinos
Translated from SimGreek as "Blue Reception Hall", the Kyanotriklinos serves both as the main imperial throne room, and as a reception hall for foreign dignitaries. Once a Eastern Jacoban church, most of its architectural and decorative elements destroyed during an earthquake. Although the outer structure was restored, the interior of the basilica suffered a complete overhaul, most of its religious architecture being removed. Whenever the emperor sits upon his throne, the highest ranked officials of the empire's palatine aristocracy sit on each side, solemn and silent until called for.
The Palace of Chloris
Named after a statue offered to Michael I sometime before his acclamation as emperor (said statue can be found in the first floor corridor), this is the imperial residence proper. The ground floor contains most basic sections of the residence - the kitchens, lounge, and office can be found here.
On the first floor, the bedrooms can be found - one for the emperor and spouse, another for the co-emperor (if there is one) and their spouse, and finally the Purple Chamber (which uses the purple-painted wood used for Michael's cabin during the War for Independence), used by the senior empress during a pregnancy. All sons of a reigning emperor born in this room are given the honorific title of "Porphyrogennetos", while daughters are instead given the female version, "Porphyrogennete". The most famous example of this can be seen with John I Kalaphates, who was popularly known as John Porphyrogennetos, even after rising to the throne.
The Imperial Polyandreion
The polyandreion ("mass grave") serves as the crypt for past emperors and their close relatives. Its vaults contain the remains of all past emperors and their spouses, from the first emperor Michael I Kalaphates to Edward I Mello, the last emperor before the current interregnum.

17 - 17
I was tagged by @geniuss-loci to answer 17 questions! Thank you for thinking of me, I really enjoyed reading your answers.
1. Nickname: Haven't got one, but the last time I had to pick a gamertag I used Tempinator and it still cracks me up. So lame
2. Zodiac: Aries, don't know about the sun, moon, and ascending thing and I'm too indifferent to look it up
3. Height: 184 cm
4. Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw
5. Last Thing I Googled: Byzantine music
6. Song Stuck in my Head: Sam the Sham & the Pharaos - Woolly Bully
7. Number of followers: 13.591
8. Amount of Sleep: I get approximately 8 hours
9. Lucky Number: 26
10. Dream Job: Songwriter would be the coolest
11. Wearing: Shortest shorts I could find. Like a 70's football player
12. Favorite Song: This changes far too frequently and is so mood dependent that I can't answer. I can say that at the end of the year my favourite radio station always plays a listener voted Top2000, and it's a tradition over here to send in 25 songs. Almost everyone I know does it. Anyway, Bohemian Rhapsody has been #1 for as long as I remember, but my pick would be: Pearl Jam - Black. It’s usually in the top 5, but it would be awesome to end the year with this song. Then again, I might miss Bohemian Rhapsody then... hearing that song before the countdown’s also tradition. Still, Pearl Jam’s Black is my answer.
13. Favorite Aesthetic: Backwoods, lush gardens, stargazing in the grass, campfires... stuff like that
14. Favorite Author: Tolkien
15. Favorite Instrument: Synthesizer
16. Favorite Animal Noise: That little u-weh baby crocodiles make
17. Random: From the undercroft of my drafts; a line from another lifetime: "It couldn't have been true love 'cause I didn't make a sim of ya." I have no idea what I was on when I wrote that, definitely a higher truth though 😂
Officially, I have to tag 17 people now. Just sharing the rules before breaking them: @pocketfullofpoesies, @lorienfae, @write-as-rains, @soulreserve, @that-girl-in-glasses1995, @absinthetears, @pennywishpoems, @dolores-hazy, @just-4-thought, @greywoodpoetry, @heartofmuse, @lunaragent, @praggya1993.... ah, so close, yet so far away! Also, as always this taggetry is done with no obligation to partake whatsoever.

Five more high-concept anti-MMOs
1) an MMO whose movement controls are WASD (like usual) but instead of controlling movement in 3d space they control movement through 2 dimensions of space and 1 of time. The spacetime geometry isn’t like our own universe, and going backward in time is perfectly permissible; but as in our universe, your velocity through time+space is constant.
2) An MMO whose points of reference and governing metaphors (from what we think of as combat to professions to spells and abilities to character classes) are all replaced by visual or verbal nonsense--so instead of having your Level 26 Druid cast Earthquake to stun a gnoll, your Orange Semi-Ascendant Talanthrope would demarcate a kalastic space, rodially displacing a fon.
3) An MMO where you play as elements of ever-shifting architecture in an immense city of Escheresque confusion. All the physical elements of the world are other players (but all the people are NPCs).
4) A game that is marketed as an MMO, and through the clever use of always-online DRM and machine learning controlling NPCs, appears to be an MMO based around nonverbal communication with other players to solve puzzles, but is in fact a single player game. Once in a very great while, another “player” will attempt to convince you to break the rules of the game and connect to a Discord server to talk in real-time; if you do join the server they suggest, your speakers are flooded with a hideous screeching noise through which, barely discernable, are dark prophecies about the future.
5) MMO Sim City, where each player is the sovereign tyrant of a city-state on a persistent continent attempting (entirely peacefully) to outcompete all their neighbors and build the most prosperous metropolis where each player is one member of the (sprawling, byzantine) city government and 99.5% of all gameplay is taken up in interminable budget meetings and zoning hearings.
