I genuinely love TOTK. If I didn't, I wouldn't have spent almost 200 hours on the game, but I can't help but feel like we should've got more about the Zonai. I just want to know more about their culture, how long they live, their different ceremonies and rites
Like I know we know about the diving ceremonies and the one you get at the Temple of Time, but I would love to know how they do their marriage ceremonies or if they celebrate birthdays. How they celebrate the birth of a child. Their calendar. Stuff like that. I want the simple life of the Zonai.

A Heart Sealed in Stone (TotK: Hero's Shadow)
Someone save me from the brain rot please
Ganondorf had to admit it – there were benefits to being allies to Hyrule.
Although his end game was to get his hands on a secret stone, the perks of being in Rauru’s good graces were apparent. Soon, he wouldn’t need Rauru’s blessing to enjoy such delights, though. He was looking forward to that.
In the meantime, he would appreciate a quiet moment with his family. The hot springs they’d settled at soothed his body like a massage in itself, and he sighed peacefully as he sank deeper into the water.
In a separate hot spring a few steps away, his wife and daughter relaxed. Hemisi was half asleep, arms wrapped around her mother’s left arm as she rested her head on her shoulder. Nabooru smiled at their daughter, gently kissing her head. When she looked over at Ganondorf, who watched both with a tender heart and a small smile, she winked at him, her lips pulling more. Ganondorf let out a small chuckle, silently communicating his love to his wife, and then her eyes drifted beyond him, motioning with her head.
Ganondorf followed her gaze, settling on the person in question.
Link stood at the edge of the springs, a gorge that bottlenecked any entry to the area. His sword was resting in his grip, settled on the ground while his hands were plopped on the hilt. It was a relatively relaxed posture, but a guarded one nonetheless.
“Link,” Nabooru called quietly so as not to awaken her daughter too much. The boy turned to look at them, a little confused. “Come here, sweetheart. You don’t need to keep guard.”
It was natural for the boy to do so, of course. He was a warrior, born of Sheikah and Hylian blood, bound by his people to serve the royal family. Ganondorf would have to start telling him soon that his loyalty would shift upon his marriage to Hemisi. The child seemed to know this already, spending steadily more and more time with the Gerudo, and it made Ganondorf smile. Hemisi was happy with Link, and he was a strong boy. He was as quiet as the breeze, simple in his words, but he would roar to life in battle. It made Ganondorf proud to see it, proud that this boy was soon to be part of his family.
Well. Relatively soon. Although by Sheikah standards the boy was of age, the age of adulthood among Hylians was seventeen, and to the Gerudo it was sixteen. The teenagers, in their youthful passions, had already promised themselves to each other and gotten engaged, but neither was at the age of consent by Ganondorf's reckoning, based on their dominant cultures. Their betrothal would last several years before Link was officially part of the family, but Nabooru seemed very keen to adopt him in sooner rather than later.
Ganondorf supposed there was merit to it. He was growing quite fond of the boy, and Link would likely not be of age when the war came. It was best to keep him close.
Link watched Nabooru hesitantly at her beckoning. He looked at Ganondorf next, seeing as the women and men were in separate pools. Ganondorf sighed, understanding the gesture, having started to grow used to the boy’s silent observations and questions. He held out an inviting hand. “Come here, Link.”
The fourteen-year-old walked with his sword in hand, eyes scanning the area constantly. When he reached the end of the pool, Ganondorf rose and walked until he reached the deeper center of the pool, eying him expectantly. Link hesitantly put his sword away, settling it on the ground, and stripped off his shirt and shoes. When he started to dip his toes into the water, he hesitated, gaze drifting back to the entrance.
Ganondorf swam over until his feet touched soil beneath him and held out both arms to the child. “You think I cannot protect all of us well enough, dear boy? Come on. You’re safe.”
Link stared at him a moment longer, debating the issue, debating whether to trust such a statement. Ganondorf almost felt a little insulted that it was even a matter to deliberate. But the boy gave in, reaching forward to take his hands. Ganondorf took a step towards him, slipping his hands under the boy’s shoulders, lifting him right off the ground and into the water in a careful hold. Link was stiff in his arms at first before relaxing into it. The two sank deeper into the water as Ganondorf carried him further into the spring – Link didn’t protest being ferried along in the water, as they both knew he wasn’t the strongest swimmer. Nabooru smiled lovingly when he locked eyes with her. Hemisi was out cold, making his heart swell with both love and amusement. His daughter felt perfectly safe with her parents around, even in such a foreign land. He… wanted Link to feel safe too.
Damn it all, he had grown attached to this silly child. But he was a good warrior, and though his gentle and kind heart was not exactly a strength in Ganondorf's eyes, he loved Hemisi dearly. Although he didn’t hold Ganondorf’s drive for power, he did have a fire in his soul, and the Gerudo king admired it. The boy would make a good prince.
Link hesitantly settled his chin on Ganondorf’s shoulder, looking out behind him. He was still keeping watch, though the Gerudo king felt the teenager’s body slowly ease up. It didn’t take long, with the moonlight casting a gentle glow that barely lit the world around them, before the boy had completely settled, his cheek pressed against Ganondorf’s skin, his breaths slow and steady in slumber…
It was curious, that such a memory would come to him now. On the precipice of his victory, Ganondorf had spent his time recovering his strength in the Depths of Hyrule. He knew it was only a matter of time before the light was snuffed out, before his blood moons stained the earth every night, before Hyrule was his. He rested with anticipation, but rarely with thoughts of the past. He supposed one could only envision victory for so long, though it was certainly entertaining. He could taste the salt of the sea, could feel the breeze of the valleys, could listen to the gentle pitter patter of rain in his mind, but what stopped his heart in its tracks were thoughts like these.
His family.
How strange, he thought, that they could possibly make his heart ache after all this time. How bizarre that, with victory so close at hand, with no one to stand in his way, the end goal felt almost empty in comparison.
How could it possibly feel like this? He had waited nearly his entire life for this moment. Perhaps he was simply disappointed that Rauru’s knight was so easily defeated. The Zonai king had placed such faith in him, after all – Ganondorf had been hoping for a challenge.
His heart stirred with restlessness. He scowled at it. Or, well, would have scowled if he had flesh on his face. He was certainly eager to regain enough strength to return to his original glory.
Perhaps he’d indulge in thinking about his family. He wasn’t sure what end it would lead to, or if it was even productive, but it wasn’t as if he had anything better to do while his minions chipped away at the world above.
He let his mind wander to his beloved wife first. Oh how he missed Nabooru. She’d had a fire to her veins, an iron will, a desire to fight and conquer just as he had. She had even helped him initially with the war – it wasn’t until he’d claimed the secret stone for himself that she’d turned against him. That thought alone soured his mood, but still… the challenge it presented, dueling his wife time and again as he had… he enjoyed that too. But perhaps he wished that she had eventually yielded, perhaps the thought that he would make her bend to his will made him more nostalgic than he had any right to be. As the Sage of Lightning, his wife had been formidable (and he certainly had felt a more than tad bitter that she had protested his supposed abuse of secret stones and then had willingly accepted one from Rauru). He doubted there was a Gerudo warrior, even now, who was her equal.
Next, he thought of his daughter. Hemisi was every bit her parents’ child, holding the fiery energy of her mother with the brashness of her father. She had been a skilled warrior in her own right, and though her ambitions did not match her parents’, she still had them. Hemisi had wanted to lead the Gerudo people, had wanted to bring her land to prosperty. More than that, though, she’d wanted a family – her relationship with Link and subsequent betrothal was evidence of that.
They certainly would have made quite the powerful couple.
That led his thoughts to Link. Bearing Sheikah and Hylian blood alike, he practically embodied every culture Ganondorf despised. It was the most ironic turn of events that the man had grown to love the boy. But how could he not? Link was strong, faithful, stubborn beyond all reason, curious and eager to learn, even playful at times. The boy could hold the innocence of a child and the resolve of a hardened soldier and balance the two perfectly.
Nabooru had tried to coddle the boy a little too much, but Ganondorf supposed that was simply what mothers did. He’d appreciated Link as the warrior he was. Most of the time. Very occasionally he might have babied him a little too. Very occasionally.
The memory of the hot spring came to mind, and he huffed. Technically, Nabooru had instigated it.
This train of thought was taking him nowhere. All he was doing was making himself feel emptier. He was soon to be king of all of Hyrule, and then spread his power beyond that land alone. This was not productive. Moping was ill-befitting a king.
Sighing, Ganondorf let the images of his family go. He stretched his senses to his minions. He could hardly tell what was going on with simple minded beasts, but his gloom hands and his puppets could show him images of the world both above and below. He felt amusement tickle him as his puppet of the Sage of Time continued to baffle and sabotage the fools of Hyrule. He let curiosity guide him as he followed the path of some gloom spawn in the Depths. It had discovered ruins of some sort.
Ganondorf had to admit, he was definitely interested in seeing how his era and those that had passed had been memorialized. While he was not much of a dilettante of history, this history included him and his people, which made it worth noting. Exactly how much time had passed anyway? He was still trying to ascertain that.
Judging by the state of the ruins the gloom spawn had found, it had certainly been a while. Also, where was everyone? The Depths were completely abandoned, and the mines down here had been thriving when he’d been sealed away. He had supposed that the area where he’d been held captive was restricted, but he hadn’t realized that they had evacuated everyone from the world down here. He wondered if anyone had set foot in the Depths since his battle with Rauru.
His battle with Rauru. He gritted his teeth a little. He had not expected the Zonai to be able to get so close to him, honestly, but he had always loved a good fight. The only thing that made it hurt was—
Rauru’s Light magic was powerful, to be sure. But Ganondorf would have expected such power to sap him of energy, to try perhaps even to destroy his secret stone. The main reason Rauru was able to seal him away, at the cost of his own life, was due to the anchor provided him by Link.
His face pulled in both fear and agony, tears glistening in his eyes as Ganondorf held him.
“Foolish child,” Ganondorf growled through a tight throat.
Link’s breath stuttered, making Ganondorf’s heart freeze. No. This was not happening. The fifteen-year-old reached forward with a shaking hand, grasping at what would have been Ganondorf’s cloak before the secret stone’s power had transformed him. For an instant he let the power recede, he let himself look as he had. Link’s eyes widened, and the tears finally traced down his cheeks. His gaze drifted down to Ganondorf’s chest, and he squeezed his eyes closed.
Ganondorf debated the matter, very aware of his surroundings. The sages were still there, as was the king. He could retreat with the child and try to save him, or he could push through and destroy all of them. He distinctly sensed Nabooru’s eyes on him, but he didn’t dare look.
“P-please,” Link whispered, barely audible above his gasping. Ganondorf stared at him, paralyzed for an instant, hating every second of it. “Please stop this.”
Stop? Oh, you foolish boy… He couldn’t stop. He wouldn’t. Not permanently. But, perhaps, this battle should end.
He wouldn’t have another opportunity like this, though. The sages were weakened, defeated even. They’d tried their best to fight him and had failed. If he let them regroup…
He was already giving the enemies too much time. Fighting them had been nearly laughable, though. He could give them a chance to regain a little bit of their strength, he supposed.
Before he could do anything, though, Link inhaled sharply, eyes opening with determination. Ganondorf grew confused, maybe even hopeful that the boy wasn’t quite as injured as he’d previously suspected, and then—
Link stabbed him.
Ganondorf yelled as the blade pushed true, releasing the boy, who fell and rolled down the stairs, staying motionless where he stopped. Enraged, he wrapped himself in his dark power once more, ignoring the cry from the others—the anguish from Nabooru—and the fight continued.
Ganondorf turned his head slightly, tasting bitterness in his mouth. He tried to distract himself, looking back at what the gloom hands had found, when he registered the sight of what they had stopped in front of.
A tomb?
Oh, he was certainly curious now. He urged his dark minion to find some kind of engraving. Whoever this person was, they had to be important to have such a memorial. It was familiar of those of the royal family, the Zonai flair and importance evident. It was a stone gazebo in the Zonai architecture, with a stone engraving in the center of the soil held within, marking the spot of the burial. All around it were flowers that thrived in the Depths, and a single, curious blue and white flower that was somehow thriving despite not being native to this region. As the gloom spawn crawled closer to the grave, the singular flower glowed brightly in response, almost in defiance.
Ganondorf ignored it, though. He sat up with a jolt.
He-- -i-s L--k
H-ro o- -yru-- and Rau-u’- El-te
Bel-v-d --- -nd ------
Prid- -f t-e Sh-i---
The air was still, his body frozen.
Could it be…?
For the first time since his awakening, breath escaped him with a shaky rasp and a singular word, thick with emotion.
“…Link?”

"The Zora Domain was once again saved from tragedy by your heroic Swordsman and our beloved King Sidon… I wonder what you might have said seeing your brother and him fighting side by side. While most unproductive, I cannot help that my mind often strays to what could've been, Lady Mipha."
Yona's words swell with bittersweet wonder as she wistfully sighs and peers at the Champion's memorial. Yona's speckled amber eyes searched the tranquil statue's face. What for? She didn't even honestly know herself. Perhaps a sense of relief, or Yona wanted a sign that their demure Champion was watching her brother thrive. What would Yona's childhood hero have said to their union? So many questions that would stay unanswered, the foreign Zora concluded. Her mind wandered to her dear husband, the stars to her night sky.
Despite his unending enthusiasm and carefree air, the Queen knew her husband well to know there was so much more lurking underneath his energetic and hopeful personality. From the outside, it seemed even fear allured him. If only they knew it was the very opposite. Sidon was and still is profoundly affected by his sister's tragic passing, more to say, the fear it caused. Who would blame him for his fear? One hundred years were a blink of an eye for the Zora. Yet time did not heal all. The emptiness in everyone's hearts still aches, just not as much anymore. Everyone can say her name and recount their memory of Mipha with a smile, but her presence would still be longed for.
Finally, Sidon resumed his monthly visits to Mipha's Court, something he hadn't done in a while, even prior to his fight with Ganon. It may be silly for some to speak with a figurine. But this simple action always made Zora fondly smile, recalling days when Mipha would always listen with kind words and a warm aura as she always did before her death.
At the Champion's memorial, Yona recalls an instant from their shared childhood when heavy rains poured down a river they played next to. The torrential downpour rose above the bank, capturing the tiny crimson-screaming prince down the waterway. The foreign Zora was the first to swim after him, willing her smaller verdant fins to move her faster. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she reached her fellow royal. The current lashed the young children, but undeterred, Yona carried him into a small cape. A moment of peace after a hurricane of freight, the water continued to thunder behind them. The tiny child tried to calm the quivering Sidon in her arms while attempting to mend a wounded foot of her own. Then, as all hope seemed lost, frenzied cries welcomed the duo as a frazzled Mipha and royal guards caught up quickly. Mipha soothed their cries, touching their cheeks and promptly healing any injuries.
"My Queen, it's well past the early evening hours. We wouldn't want the subjects, least of all His Majesty, to worry about your disappearance." Webbed footsteps lightly tread behind the Queen as Khira stirs the royal to the present, her voice woven in respectful concern for Yona. Her attendants always stayed close to each other and their Lady out of duty and fondness for each other's company.
Even if Chroma's youthful airheadedness got on the latter's nerves, it was still a comfort brought to the Domain.
Their homeland was nearly unattainable to those who couldn't breathe and tread water as swiftly as the aquatic race. In contrast, Zora's Domain flourished to the elements. While New Bay seldom had hazardous weather. Their home had air pocket caverns filled with seashell shops nestled deep into the sea's safe tides and swaying colors, hidden from the land and its residence—a true secret treasure amongst the merpeople.
"Yes, yes. Of course, I wouldn't wish for Sidon to worry. My apologies to you both. It is late, Chroma, Khira. You did not have to accompany me to the Court. No monsters have dared step foot after that Sludge Like." Yona turns, smiling at her loyal, protective attendants. Her golden headpiece jewelry gingerly clinks as she steps down the stairs; verdant hands glide down the polished handrails. The Caregiver knew full well her guards knew their way around the weapons and their water magic, but still, she felt bad for her friends staying with her so long. Yona was no stranger to marksmanship or training herself in purifying wounds and tainted water.
"Please don't worry about it, Lady Yona! We like looking after you; you're our friend, plus his Majesty asked- Ow!" The youngest Zora cheerfully bubbles, and the older guard swiftly jabs her. The new Queen tilts her head, sighing to herself. Even now, Sidon's still quite protective, isn't he? But still, a loving gesture all the same that makes her heart flutter and cheeks warm.
"Hush you! Do you not know when to flap your lips and when not to? On that note as well, how many times must I lecture you? It is Queen Yona, no longer 'Lady.' Have you no respect or idea of the importance of these titles? My goodness, do my words fall on deaf ears?" Exasperated, Khira shakes her head while glaring at her fellow attendant. The trio starts their short journey home as Yona's muffled laughter spills from her lips, watching her dear friend's antics. The young women stare down the waterfall leading down Lulu Lake.
"Please, be nice. Any more of your reprimands, and I'll go deaf." Squeaks the distraught retainer, dark gray eyes pleading to their Queen for help as they descend through the waters.
Even from an immense height, the radiant city's glow softens the carved-out cliffs, and the bright ore deposits dot the wet landscape, becoming a beacon of beauty and splendor. The sun's wonderous warmth far retreated past the Domain's reach, a touch of cold breezes caressing Yona's skin. Coming to the halfway mark, the Caregiver answers her friend's silent pleas. Standing before the marbled platform, the Zora Queen shifts her attention to her bickering friend.
"Khira, come now, I believe that's enough, we wouldn't wish any harm, and it is only the three of us. You can indeed allow one moment of reprieve. I need not worry about titles, my precious friends." Yona coaxes her friend's long-winded lectures, seeing the elder Zora sigh in defeat and allowing this rare moment of informality, much like the old times. Marching down, Khira and Chroma flank their Queen's side, scanning every direction for any monster or Yiga sneak attack. The clansmen weren't interested in the Zora royal line, but being cautious with the newly crowned royalty never hurt.
Their serenity shatters as a high-pitched undignified whine carries through, cutting into the air as they swim down the final waterfall. The young guards perk up and quickly unsheath their weapons, pushing their Queen further near the falls, providing a swift escape. "Your Majesty, Chroma, stay here. I'll go investigate." A hushed command tumbles from the dark dolphin Zora's lips, eyes narrowing and head tucked down for intimidation.
The royal guard crawls out of the pool, spotting a cluster of thick foliage suitable for an ambush. Rushing to the forest green bushes, Khira ducks down to spy on the ruckus while Chroma guards Yona with her spear, guiding her safely away from the unseen danger. The new ruler braces herself, summoning water to snake around her sharp claws.
"I can't believe Sidon's married already! Come on. He's hitched to some random Zora girl we've never heard of? It doesn't sound like a union from love, y'know? And that, too, he doesn't talk much about her. I don't know; it sounds so fishy. That wasn't supposed to be a pun, by the way." A brown-haired Hylian woman clad in some strange mushroom hat walks into sight, and it seems she isn't alone. The woman's other companions stroll by, a pair of other Hylians complain, and another person in glasses fiddles with their leather satchel.
This group seems relatively young while they remain unabashed, glad to blabber, Khira thinks. Anger wells up in her as the group's voices had no intention of stopping with their ill-meaning talk. She knows that Yona could hear this noise. How could she not? Even a Bokoblin would understand their mad rambles.
"Well, I mean, Khole, we don't know much about Zora's politics, so I don't know if it may be an arranged loveless wedding," The glasses wearing sheepishly, state as they twiddle with short brown hair looking back at their friends. It seems this group was returning from visiting the East Reservoir.
"Amia, you're talking as if we know about our own. After all, our Princess had up and disappeared. Only Hylia knows where she is. Of course, she's nice, but if she were our Princess, she would try to reinstate the crown rather than twiddle around in Hateno. We've been in shambles for a hundred years, and only now are we starting to come back. If my great-grandparents could see how this panned out, they'd give Zelda a big lesson about responsibility. I know they lived on the outskirts of Castle Town. They saw she didn't put her all into protecting us from the Calamity." Another crude voice cuts into the cloud of gossip, and the tallest of the group groans. This one must be Khloe, according to them.
"Khloe, that's not nice. She does some things like building the school. I appreciate that, and even the fact she's somehow alive makes the older and more devout folks more invigorated." The shortest man answers the group, trying to reel in their chat, eyes darting around the wandering travelers.
"I like that she made the school too, but that's all our Princess does; twiddle around, now poof! She's gone along with her silent little knight throwing everyone in all corners of Hyrule for a loop," The mushroom-wearing Khole snorts, not taking the hint and wrapping her arm around the small man.
"Besides, there's only so much teaching can do if they don't know how to fight; you're dead. But I don't even know if this royal has done anything substantial to this, 'Zora Queen.' She appeared out of nowhere too, and I heard the women who had their little fan club are still reeling." Yona has had enough of this slander, slashing into the dancing streams around her hands, instantly dropping into the tide. The young Queen knew their last statement wasn’t true in the slightest, reminiscing the many moments the club members loudly fawned over her and the coupling.
The Zora, as she evades Chroma's eased guard, at brazen conversation in their Domain where these Hylians should be more mindful. These ignorant speculations about their Princess; they didn't see how Zelda collapsed to her knees, too choked on her grief to properly beg forgiveness from former King Dorephan and the royal line. When she emerged from the ruins of Hyrule Castle alongside Link, they didn't see the solemn strength and wisdom that welled behind those teary eyes, renewing her vow of protecting everyone no matter the cost.
But what pained her more was that, deep down, their prodding at the royal coupling hit a sore spot in her heart. The optimistic prince and herself had no say in their engagement. Of course, they had visited each other's kingdoms as young teens. Her heart never wavered in her affections for him and his people, but she often wondered what he felt when King Dorephan told him. The royals scarcely had time to talk and be with each other in private, away from others, along with helping the ill-stricken Zora from the sludge, repairing the Domain and Sidon becoming the Water Sage, and finally helping Link defeat Ganon.
Years after the Calamity and its sting aftermath, they grew dearly fond of each other. He changed, his glowing with unending enthusiasm and the occasional naivete all genuine. But he seemed to hide his deeper emotions from the public, even with his dear father. Either for fear that it would make him seem inexperienced or because he wished to truly earn the crown, Sidon's grown used to hiding his whole heart even now. Yona hoped she'd prove herself to him and eventually be blessed to reach those parts of his soul, knowing he was safe with her.
They've had many conversations about their situation and the future after Link helped Sidon slay the beast that floats in the sky. But old habits formed from grief and feeling inadequate die hard. The King still hides from the outside, so much so that he loathes to admit it. After the kingdom's announcement, she doubted if he truly loved her the same way as she did him as the century passed and their visits grew prevalent. Throughout their youth, they eventually graced each other with the title of a beloved friend.
Did his heart worry for her out of genuine care or for appearances or necessity? Did he yearn to have her beside him as his bride, Queen, and equal because he loved her? Would there be a day that Sidon would smile and proudly show his love to the world like Mei and Fronk?
Yona understood betrothal gifts were essential to the Hyrulean Zora culture, but she wasn't taught that way. Only learning how to mend the armor from other fish scales, her people learned a sacred courtship dance to show their interest. Yona summons her rapid heartbeat to the clearing out of the pooling water, allowing them to see her. Chroma whispers for Yona to stay but emerges from the pool trailing her Lady.
"Enough of your useless babble," The zealous guard seethes, lunging at the group from the overgrown shrubs. Jumping out of their skin, the rowdy quartet leap into each other's arms. They shudder like leaves, eyes firmly screwing closed, far too absorbed in their well-being.
The Zora spear inches away from the supposed root of all this meaningless noise, "You have shown an inexplicable disrespect and regard for both your Princess and our Queen. Your prattle proves nothing among you and your ilk. Your eyes will never see the true nature of these critical figures, and perhaps that is not your desire," Khira grits her sharpened teeth, even the air around them stilled in anticipation.
The grip on her spear tightens with every passing breath as the group hesitantly opens their eyes. The spear aimed at the frightened woman pulls back, and the guard's posture loosens, showing a reluctant sign of mercy and growling while pulling her weapon back. "But I will allow you this grace as well as one warning. You will not sully any of the royal's names here—especially Queen Yona. One would think that Princess Zelda's diplomatic nature would pass for all her subjects. Consider yourselves lucky. I want to avoid pushing more work on their Majesties, so relieving the burden of taking your tongues is out of the realm of possibility."
"Khira! Enough! Stand down." Yona calls out to her fearless attendant; in her mind, she notes how uncharacteristically aggressive the Zora woman is and how strange it is to see her threaten visitors. The Hylians take shaky steps back, looking at the emerging figure. Startled gasps erupt as the attendant glances over her shoulder. Faltering in her angered resolve, seeing the smaller Zora's displeased face. Lifting the sharp spear away, the Caregiver walks in front so the visitors can see her, bowing her head to the cluster of people as they stay silent. The royal could feel their pensive eyes staring into her as if trying to figure her out by tearing her apart.
"I sincerely apologize for my attendant; this is the first time I've seen her act out in such an unsightly manner. This will not go unreprimanded, while this flagrant threat does not deserve quick forgiveness. Please do not think lowly of us. I seem to have pushed my guard to the brink of exhaustion, so much so that one believes violence would be the answer if I can do anything to appease you. You need only ask, and I will do it. But know that I am Queen Yona." The Queen steadies her breath as she lifts her head, jewelry gently clinking. Scanning their faces, Yona watches the group hastily cover their jabber. However, their words have done their damage making Yona feel miserable but still overwhelmingly riddled with uncertainty.
"O-oh, no, no, no, we're sorry. Uh, you don't need to do that. It was immature of us to talk like that. Sorry, you heard that, but you seem nice, but we're just going to go."
The group leader nervously chirps up as she eyes the serious Khira. Another ally of Khloe's speaks up, nodding and clinging to each other's arms. "Thanks for not hurting us. Bye." Making their escape, crossing the connecting bride to the city. Yona's forlorn eyes linger on their retreating forms.
"What was that? That wasn't an apology at all! And Khira, what in the world got into you." Chroma scoffs as she perches her weapon on her back, eyes frantically scanning her two friend's faces trying to understand them. The younger guard pouts to herself and quietly mutters, "And you always get after me for not bringing shame to the Zora name..."
Despite the rowdy crowd's departure, the young women felt the air thick with tension. Meekness gnaws at Khira as she ducks her head down, too ashamed of her reckless actions and making Yona speak for her. She would indeed badger the younger guard, but to think she would act so brutishly was beyond hypocritical.
"I am profoundly ashamed that you had to see that, your Majesty. But saying I feel guilty for silencing their larks would be a lie. I will not tolerate such belligerence towards you and things they don’t wish to comprehend." The Zora grits her teeth, spitting out a response, rising to look at her liege's back. The young woman partially turns, sapphire flecks eyes glance at her taller lady-in-waiting, Yona dutifully declares.
"Allowing emotions to cloud and open the way to conflict isn't like you, and I understand your reasoning. I find myself appreciating the wild gesture, but I will not tolerate any of your outbursts. Lest you want to stay in my service, being the head of state, is to preserve the peace to all that come and go from Zora's Domain, even to those without respect. We must rise above and show kindness," Light Green's side fins sway as she shakes her head. Yona's hand waved for Chroma and Khira to follow suit. She swallows the biting taste in her mouth, cupping her hands before her chest. She absentmindedly picked at her claws; the sound of clicks enveloped the girls as they fell in line, resuming their protective flank. Exchanging worried looks between each other.
"This should go without saying, but please don't tell Sidon. He's been busy, returning from his valiant battle alongside the other sages protecting the land and handling a kingdom. Something so small should not plague his mind. I'm certain I will forget this soon enough." Yona sharply inhales as she tries to lift her spirits, but her words drip despondence. Her heart twists in painful knots, knowing she's going back on her promise of being truthful and open to her love.
"We won't breathe a word." The duo candidly answer as they make their way across the pristine bridge. While a robust familiar figure happily waves in the distance, welcoming them blissfully unaware of what occurred.
The sinking feeling did, indeed, not disappear from Yona's mind. Their words echo in her head, and the festering sense of inadequacy and insecurity lurks in the corners of her mind. It had been a few days since her encounter, and she knew allowing such heated words to get to her was folly. Yona couldn't help her mind slipping into the depths of her doubt. Even to the point, her melancholic air alarmed the elderly councilmen and Exalted Dorephan. The new Queen lacked her signature sweet nature, replacing her charming aura with an absent mind.
While busy creating safe pathways and removing the debris strewn along the narrowing passage from the mainland to their Domain. Sidon grew worried for his Yona. It's been hard not to notice his citizens concerning whispers about her well-being circled the Domain, and his dearest barely stayed by his side after she visited Mipha Court. She seemed off-put and fidgety whenever he was near her. Even the little ones seemed fretful with Yona's unusual behavior, and her attendants acted peculiar, seemingly hiding something.
The warm afternoon sun beams down on Zora's Domain, an occasional breeze passing through his magnificent home. It's almost ironic that the weather contrasts the new King's worrisome thoughts.
"Naydra's eyes, What am I missing?" Sidon mutters, standing before the pristine balcony overseeing the Domain. His sharp eyes longingly linger on Zora's soft green form, watching her speaking with the fisherman, Mei. He was beyond glad the forgetful citizen returned from the Floating Fish Island. Admittedly busy, ensuring his best soldiers to Lookout Landing returned, Sidon remains steadfast in giving his people protection and grace as those before him. He was dutiful in looking after his people's well-being.
So many things happened in a whirlwind of events; first, it was the Upheaval, then the vile sludge desecrating his home, and finally, his unexpected coronation and marriage to his beloved, then assisting Link in his fight against Ganon. The royal Zora ponders if it was as overwhelming to her as it was for him. The young King certainly has no regrets, but the stress of it all tends to invade his mind even when the epic battle has ended.
Rambunctious giggles erupt from below, stirring him from his daze. His sharp eyes flicker between Mei waving to the young King and his darling Queen, now turned up to see him. A magnetic force pulled their eyes to meet, and he could feel his heart stop, breath hitch in his throat when a ghost of a bashful smile graced Yona's lips. Her golden adornments shine, accentuating her beautiful features. His cheeks flushed against his cold skin, and a heart-stopping smile painted his face. It could be only them in the world.
The moment broke too soon for his liking as Yona shyly averted her gaze. It looked like the floor was more enticing to her now; soft laughter rolled from him, uncaring of the whispered swoons and muttering about young love. Unable to tear his gaze away from Yona as the giggling fisherman bows and parts from the royal Zora. Nodding to something Mei told her, the young woman walks the stairs. Sidon's eyes follow her each step, and soon she stands by his side, making the void of her absence the past few weeks far more prominent than before.
"May we speak in private?" Yona's soft, tantalizing voice asks, her eyes peering up at him with sorrow and meekness clouding her usually cheerful aura. Sidon observes her expression, questioning what caused her heart such sadness.
Nodding to her request, he pauses, thinking of places for a private conversation. He knew the open grandeur of the Domain wasn't much for a solitary chat, so they had to travel somewhere close in case a danger arose but far enough so no curious ear listened. Coming to a solution, the crimson Zora answers, nodding to his Yona. "Of course, I'll have the guards notify my father if they need us."
The couple stroll beside each other to young Zora guarding the stairs to the Throne room. "If anything arises from my absence, find Queen Yona and I atop the Veiled Falls. Please tell the Exalt, thank you." Sidon instructs, giving them a polite smile and watching the faithful sentries obediently comply. In the corner of his peripheral vision, he hears the young woman's gasp. Yona’s eyes widen slightly at his chosen place.
"Now, shall we depart, Yona?" Sidon looks to his side. She doesn't meet his gaze but nods all the same. 'Still absorbed in her thoughts. I wish to know what's plaguing you so, my love.' The perplexed Zora thinks to himself, making their short journey to the Falls.
The two sit on the edge of the Veiled Falls. Sidon surveys the landscape before them, the glistening architecture proudly towering as his head turns. An overwhelming sense of pride and wonder swirls in him, overlooking his gorgeous home. The loud water tirelessly tumbles down the Falls, creating white noise and protecting them from potential eyes and ears, allowing them to speak as they please. The extroverted man feels the atmosphere melt away into a reflective air. His sweet empathic nature shines through, but so does a familiar nervousness, worrying he may say something unintentionally unkind. It's truly a marvel how Yona's mere presence reduced him to his shyer, composed side like they were still children.
"I know that I have been busy and thus haven't been with you by becoming crowned king, but it doesn't allow me to negate my husbandry duties… Now love, what plagues you so?" He tenderly questions his wife, seeing her steady her breath, and comes to terms with whatever tortured her.
"My King," Yona starts to wonder aloud, trying to gather the scramble of words in her mind. Her hands are cupping each other in her lap tense, and her shoulders tighten. While Sidon's brow furrows, she never addressed him formally like that before, not even when they were little ones. "I find myself wondering, has our union been too hasty? Am I truly the one you want besides you? Surely someone far more courageous would be a better match." Concern coupled with mere shock overtook him. His eyes widened, looking at her words. He desperately wants to cut her off and ask her, but he holds his tongue, wanting her to feel safe with him. 'Where in the world did this come from?'
"Those days ago, my attendants and I came across a group of people that brought up the validity of our union. I know it's foolish to listen, and in hindsight, it’s minuscule compared to the intrepid battle you returned from only months ago, but I want to be truthful about it." The woman explains. Yona stops turning to look at him. Vulnerability is etched on her face as he patiently waits for her sign to speak.
"If this has made you worry for this long, it’s no small deal. So that's what you've been dwelling on. Do you doubt my feelings?" He politely utters out, the sick tightening in his chest as he waits in anticipation of her answer. Yona says nothing, in silent agreement. She scolds herself for hurting him so much as he rises from his spot, holding his crimson hand for her. The young woman reaches for him as they stand together.
"You recall the importance of this place, yes? This was the last time I saw my sister alive. Days after, we came to mourn after being informed about my sister being trapped in Ruta. I ran to this place to drown in my tears, where no one could hear me. My desperate attempts to swim upstream, this mighty Fall, fell flat. Then miraculously, you came. You found me in the pool,"
"Crying together in each other's arms, I remember. I asked where you were, and I found you here trying to hide." Sidon's large hands engulf Yona's as she jumps in. The young woman knowing this story well, caressing her thumbs around his palms.
"Yes. At that moment, I saw someone I could call a friend. I discovered someone who could see all of me without fearing judgment. Someone that looked at the depths of my sadness and allowed me to grieve unashamed. Someone that I could share my accomplishments with. We were arranged to marry, but I was elated when my father informed me. I could not imagine anyone else by my side. You've continued to be a beloved companion. I fell in love with your compassionate, intelligent, selfless nature. Your ability to know what's troubled me among countless others made me want to return the favor tenfold," Sidon tenderly divulged, finally noticing Yona meet his eye.
The pure warm adoration in his remarks left the doubtful royal speechless. Strings of wispy white clouds pass overhead, shading the two. "I want to continue growing alongside you as the years pass. I want you to know that I will always love you. You, Yona, Are the only one I want to have on my side. I love you with all my heart." Sidon slips his hand away and brushes underneath her side fins, cupping her cheek and stroking her face as if trying to dispel all her worries from her mind. The smaller Zora nuzzles into his calloused hard-working hand, feeling at peace now unyielding to keep her gaze away from his steady eyes.
"I-I should not have allowed a stranger's words to cause such dismay. I'm sorry for doubting your devotion," She pauses, golden eyes fluttering closed, smooshing her cheek into his hand, angry at herself for significantly impacting how she acted towards him and those in the Domain.
"Will you forgive me?" Shame and relief wash over her, watching Sidon nod at her inquiry. His arm snakes around her waist while tugging her close to his chest. She hears the rapid pounding of his heart, feeling tears threaten to spill from her eyes. Willing them away momentarily, she peels from his broad chest, tugging at the gleaming silver prince his chest piece down.
Standing on her tippy toes, Yona wraps her arms around him, leaning into him while Sidon's finned arms securely encase her body in his. They share a sweet moment, their eyes slowly shut, and their lips collide in a kiss. Sparks fly across the two as Sidon deepens the kiss leaning toward her soft lips, wishing to melt into her touch. Quicken groans and gasps escape their lips, and hot puffs of air roll onto their mouths as they kiss again. It felt like gravity pulled them together again, as if it was torture to stay apart for even the air.
Savoring the taste of salt on their tongues, their lungs burn, taunting them to breathe momentarily. Begrudgingly, Yona pulled away. First, labored rasps heave from her petite frame, now noticing that Sidon lifted her from the ground pressing her close to his chest and sitting in his arms. The loud drumming of their hearts pounds in their ears as they silently look at each other. The noisy waterfall downs out their unsteady breaths as they slowly feel a smile perk on their warm faces.
"That wasn't an answer, my love." Mischievously scolding her loyal husband, Yona laughs to herself as he feigns cluelessness. She doesn't want to let go, reveling in his arms and in the love he gave her. "It wasn't? Well, I might need more time to convince you then." Sidon releases a husky chuckle, his voice a tinge of playfulness and desire, his eyes crinkling as his charming smile shines down at Yona, bringing her close again to steal another kiss.

LoZ - My HCs on Ordonian Culture
Ordon Town can be found in Ordona, which in BotW & TotK, translates into the Faron Grasslands. Ordon Village originally being located around the Lake of the Horse God with Ordon Ranch being settled within Ibara Butte.
The Village has since expanded to Fural Plain (once the South Faron Woods) around the Fardona Spirit Lake, canonically known as Haran Lake, & has become a small town. It had once been a simple spring, but something had happened to the Faron Spring to cause Faron to migrate down to Ordona's Spring where the 2 merged & became Fardona. This resulted in the spring growing large & becoming a sacred lake.
Ordona encompasses the entirety of the Faron Grasslands, including the area west of Cora Lake & Menoat River. This includes the Parache Plains, Papetto Grove, & Darybon Plains. Which I believe used to be the Deep Faron Woods & Sacred Grove areas in TP.
---
Ordon homes tend to be either the typical farm house or resemble Hobbit Holes, so smials. The smials are also known for having trees growing out the tops of them which later become incorporated into later families' homes.
As for their overall culture & architecture, Ordon has a rural ranching feel & might be inspired by a southern agricultural town in Italy called Ordona. So, maybe rural Italy with American South mannerisms & sensibilities. Maybe with a bit of Welsh in there too. Sometimes in certain words, such as Hiraeth & Cariaeth. Which, Cariaeth is a word I made up that has much a similar meaning to Hiraeth, but instead of being for a place, it's for a person or people. Both are just words that there really is no English equivalent for.
At the same time, I also get Irish Gaelic & small-town English countryside vibes as opposed to the Scottish Gaelic ones I get from Hateno.
---
Ordon is mostly populated by Ovelians (humans with rounded ears) & Lupáns, but has the occasional Hylian, Sheikah, & Gerudo here & there.
While not many Goron visit the area, when they do, they tend to get on well with the locals as they have a lot of similar values.
For more on Lupáns, see my Wolf Link & the Búralupán Race post.
—
Ordon's main religion mainly surrounds the Light Spirits, Fardona the Long-Tailed Calopus, Eldin the Raptor Bird, & Lanayru the Gator-Headed Snake. Fardona being one of their 2 main patrons alongside Malanya (referred to as Meiléina here), both of whom are said to have blessed Ordon Ranch.
(Calopus being a Mythological Medieval creature resembling a horned wolf. In the original myth, it also had the face of a cat, but that doesn't apply here.)
It is said that Ordona the Calopus & Faron the Bushy-Tailed Monkey had originally been one entity, but due to necessity, had split themselves into 2 in order to subdue an enemy, protect the lands' light, & properly guide an ancient hero. Once their tasks as 2 separate entities were truly concluded, they merged once more into their original form. Thus becoming Fardona the Long-Tailed Calopus.
Ordonians never really worshipped the Golden Goddesses as a triumferate (in fact, practically no one in modern society does anymore) or Hylia. Rather, their religion mostly revolves around the Light Spirits, who have a much closer & more personal connection to Ordon itself, considering how between 2-3 of them are so close to Ordon.
They also worship Karina, the Goddess of Love, Passion, Marriage, Pudicity, & Healthy Relationships. Though, in Ordona, she is referred to as Karridwena, where she is very prominently worshipped as a fae moon goddess of the wild hunt (thus coming across as more of a Celtic version of Artemis) & is strongly associated with inspiration.
On the other hand, Farore does still have a fairly recognized role in Ordonian religion as Fayrah, fae goddess of the wild things & fortune.
Though, they also recognize Farore's husband, Hebrogar, as the bringer of winter, hunters, & survival, Hebarngán.
The full moons of the fall are referred to as Hunter's Moons & it is said that Hebarngán takes his family out on hunts on those nights. The Búraló-síth act as their hunting dogs.
—
In Ordon weddings, the bride & groom traditionally wear clothes inspired by the Light Spirits & crowns meant to resemble Ordona's horns. - This idea comes from @smilesrobotlover, who originally had the idea!
A number of elderly Ordonian men tend to take up horn carving in their old age. It isn't uncommon for goats to lose a horn at times, so why not find a use for them?
The designs are often Celtic as most don't start carving with much intent, rather preferring to just allow inspiration to drive them.
They often come out looking quite lovely.
Sometimes, they'll even carve bukkehorns from them.
It's believed that a crown carved from the horns of young kids are considered sacred to the Light Spirit, Fardona, which is why it's believed that if a young goat loses their horns before a wedding, that the union was given Fardona's blessing.
Traditionally speaking, it's supposed to be the fathers of the bride & groom who're supposed to carve them. This is supposed to act as their own blessings for the union as well.
Extremely rarely, a pair of faintly glowing horn shards will suddenly appear before a truly blessed by fate pair. It is believed that they may be the peeled pieces of Fardona's own horns, which is considered a sign of a truly sacred union. These pieces are often polished, causing them to shine like gemstones, before being embedded into the crowns themselves to act as centerpieces.
Rusl & Uli still have the crowns from their own wedding hung up over their mantel.
---
Goats are very important to Ordon. As such, their horns are used a lot.
For instance, Ordon blacksmiths tend to inlay their weapons with the shed horns of Ordon Goats & often have them carved into the handles.
---
Ordon is primarily a ranching town focused on the Ordon Goat, Horses, & Cuccos. As such, they tend to use mostly goat products.
Ordon Goats being unique in that they are much larger than normal goats with blueish-gray fur & have horns that form a large, complete circle or oval atop their heads. Their milk has a distinct taste that separates it from that of other goats.
Goat milk is generally said to taste somewhat sweet & mild with little to no aftertaste. Goat butter tastes sweet & tangy & has a smooth, creamy texture. While goat cheese is considered to be mild & buttery.
Ordon Goat dairy products are these things as well, but they are also consistently richer & slightly sweeter with a somewhat earthy undertone to them that other goat dairy products simply don't have. Ordona Cheese specifically also being slightly tart with no soapy aftertaste like some goat cheeses can have.
Ordon is also known for their famous Gilded Cuccos. These Gilded Cuccos can be found anywhere in Hyrule, but are extremely rare & mostly found in Ordon. The reason being that the hatching of a Gilded Cucco is considered the mark of an exceptional cucco farmer. Technically, one can be hatched anywhere depending on how well its mother was raised, it just so happens that Ordon tends to produce these more often than other places.
It's said that a Gilded Egg is lain when a hen is positively brimming with happiness & contentment & love for its farmer. Thus, having one is considered a point of pride amongst cucco farmers. If that Gilded Egg happens to be fertilized, then it can hatch a Gilded Cucco. And if that Gilded Cucco is a hen as well, it too will produce Gilded Eggs. Though, rarely will those eggs be fertilized, only happening when that Gilded Hen has reached that same threshold as their mother did before & a Gilded Cucco can only lay one fertilized Gilded Egg in its entire life.
No one knows why their fertility rates are so much lower than the typical Cucco, but a lot of old ranchers & chicken farmers say that it's to keep ya from getting complacent or a big head.
It's also said that hatching & raising a Gilded Cucco causes a blessing to be placed upon the farmer's family & land that only leaves it if the cuccos are ever treated badly. It's nothing too extreme, just more good luck, higher yields, higher quality products, longer harvests, shorter winters, stuff like that. You'd barely notice unless you were paying real close attention.
All the same, these little things do tend to add up.
Gilded Eggs are very nutritious & delicious, even more so than the typical egg, which is already considered a super food, & are known for the sparkling, pale gold-like sheen to them. Their yolks being known to shimmer slightly & are the absolute best when done over medium so that the whites are cooked, but the yolk remains runny. These eggs are considered a luxury & are often sought after by the rich.
A single ranching community typically can't have more than 3 Gilded Cuccos at once. Though, even still, it is insanely rare to get more than 1.
—
Ordona has this legend about fae wolves. They're called the Búraló-síth (Pronounced: bura-low-she). Which are based off of real world Irish & Scottish folk creatures called Cú-síth (Pronounced: coo-she).
IRL, they are described as large dog-like creatures that have shaggy, green fur & are known to be as large as a small cow. But in Ordona folklore, they are wolves instead of dogs & only extremely old Búraló-síth become so large. They also come in a variety of colors instead of just green. Though, they are marked by peculiar patterns.
Anyway, Búraló-síth are also known for taking souls to the afterlife, same as Cú-síth. So, they are a type of Psychopomp.
They are also said to protect lost children.
(A not so subtle reference to TP.)
---
Ordon is also known for its apple orchard on the east side of Fural Plain. This orchard is known for producing a higher than average amount of Golden Apples.
There is also the large amount of Courser Bee hives populating the nearby forest. This forest is known as an apiarist forest as the bees there are allowed to live naturally & the beekeepers only interfere to take excess honey while making sure to leave enough for the bees.
—
Ordonians quite like wry wit. So, their toasts tend to reflect this. They also have a distinct brewing & drinking culture.
Toasts include:
"Confusion to our enemies!"
"Here's to the liver!"
"May you be in the Beckonwyld half an hour before the Demon King knows you're dead."
"Here's to your death. May I build your coffin myself from the wood of a hundred year old oak tree that I will plant... tomorrow."
"To the ladies. May we fall into their arms without falling into their hands."
Ordonians also quite enjoy singing when they drink, being a jolly bunch.
Such includes:
"Health & a long life to you.
Land without rent to you.
A child every year to you.
And if you can't go to the Beckonwyld,
May you at least die in Ordona."
- Inspired by an Irish toast.
"She offered her honor,
I honored her offer.
And all the night long,
I was on her & off her."
- Best used when drinking with "the guys."
---
One of the things that they're known for is their food & their brewing. And instead of an inn, Ordon has a tavern instead known as The Tangled Capaill (based on an old Ordonian folktale about a drunken horse: here). Which gets them a good amount of adventurers & researchers.
Ordon also has a fairly large baking community & they are known for their use of Ordon dairy products, honey, apples, & pumpkins in their baking.
For more on Ordon's Food Culture, go here.
---
Ordon is also known for sports such as sumo wrestling, step dance, caber toss, hurling, & boxing.
However, Ordon & Mabe also have an annual baking competition & the role of host alternates each year. It's mainly between them, but anyone from anywhere can join.
Ordon also enters the Hyrule Rodeo in the summer, which features horseback riding/racing, saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, goat tying, & other events. This rodeo is generally held near Hateno in Olvi Plain, just south of Nirvata Lake.
---
Ordon also has its own festivals that it enjoys, such as the Harvest Festival in the fall, specifically held to give thanks for autumn's bounty. The 1st few days are an actual festival with food stalls, music, games, but the last day of the festival's activities is more for those who don't have families of their own as that day is specifically meant to focus on family togetherness in a similar way to Thanksgiving & is called the Feast of Family. The Feast of Family is, traditionally, a potluck. During the Feast, large tables are set up in the town squares for them. It's also tradition for local farmers, brewers, families, & businesses to donate a very small portion of their harvests/food/alcohol so that those individuals without families get to have a feast of their own together in case they don't have the means to bring anything themselves.
Some families will even invite friends without their own over to celebrate with them & they are treated as part of the family. That last day, you are intended to give thanks for all the blessings in your life. This is actually a Hyrule-wide celebrated holiday, but it's also very important to Ordon specifically.
There's also the Festival of Light in winter. An Ordon festival dedicated to honoring the Light Spirits, specifically Fardona. Kakariko also holds it too for Eldin, but no one celebrates it quite like Ordon.
It's tradition to gather Brightblooms & Starlight Rosemary & for the kids to weave them together into garlands, wreaths, & streamers to decorate the town with.
They also celebrate Bondsday, which takes place at the beginning of spring. It's a Hyrule-wide celebration, but specifically has roots in Faron, Ordona, & Necluda. So, it's considered part of their culture. It's considered the Hyrule equivalent of Valentine's day, Family day, & Friendship day. It is held to honor Karina. However, she is specifically a goddess of healthy relationships & not just romance. So, daytime is spent with friends & family, while nighttime is spent with either immediate family or romantic partners. Family is generally celebrated throughout the day.
Other things Ordon participates in is the Hyrule Fair, which is held in Windvane Meadow. It's basically just your typical county fair sort of thing. With blue ribbons & all that. Has a bunch of agricultural & ranching contests.
They also celebrate Remembrance Day, which is a holiday founded by TotK's Zelda to honor & mourn the lives that were lost during the Calamity. Special attention is given to remember the sacrifices of the soldiers & Champions who died protecting Hyrule. (It's basically like if you combined Veteran's Day with the Jewish holiday, Yom HaShoah, a.k.a. Holocaust Remembrance Day.) - Each individual race also has their own individual day to celebrate the lives of their specific Champion in their own ways. Always held on that Champion's birthday. However, since Ordon didn't have a specific Champion, they simply mourn the soldiers & Champions as a unit.

@flockrest
Hi Ray! Uhh it’s your resident lurker, the one who wrote that long-ass ask about Link and Tulin being so similar? Y’know how I said the colors post was giving me some brainrot? Yeah, uh.. this is in part inspired by that. I hope you enjoy? A!! (And seriously, no pressure to respond!! + if you'd like me to remove this for whatever reason, then please let me know!!)
(Also a warning, this is long as shit, like. Almost 2000 words according to google docs, so it is MOST CERTAINLY under a read more! There are TOTK endgame spoilers so. Watch out, reader, if for whatever reason you haven't gotten that far!)
Ganondorf could not kill them. Nor could he kill their spirits, their drive, their care for eachother.
But what he did do to to them sure as hell killed Link’s creativity, for a couple months.
Even now that Sonia and Rauru had returned his arm to him, unscarred and without its old aches and pains, Link found it harder than ever to create with that hand. Maybe the aforementioned is all the reason he needs- it feels nothing like how it should feel. It doesn’t feel like his anymore.
It was one thing when his pains were tangible, physical- he could do something about them, or take something for them. But the phantom pains, both from his scars of days past and his time with the ‘gift’ of Rauru’s arm? There’s so little to be done about them.
But eventually, Link does what he has always done: fight through his discomfort and pain to achieve his goals. Now, that doesn’t mean it isn’t slow going, but he doesn’t bother to note it as often as he used to, these days. Time passing, ‘wasted’, is no problem, now that the threats to his home and friends are gone once more.
He has a new project he’s working on. Gifts, one for all of his friends- Zelda, the sages, so many people that have helped them all along the way. Yona especially, a marriage gift for her for when the time comes.
He makes Zelda’s first. A scarf, themed after her dragon form and lined with beads made of the shards that would break off the spikes of her spine. She has mixed feelings when he first presents it, but the way the beads help her relax turns the tide, and Link doesn't miss how she takes very cooler day as an opportunity to wear it.
Yunobo’s has to wait until Link has all his strength back- it requires stone-carving and metal-working, and he can’t do that comfortably yet- not from a pain standpoint, more inexperience. Same for Sidon and Yona’s gifts, but theirs will come first.
Riju gets a new plush for her collection, fashioned after her favorite sandseal. It wears a plush version of the Lightning Helm crooked on its head, and Link very kindly does not comment when Riju starts getting teary in his home, after a dinner with him and Zelda. The two of them have always been rather sentimental people, at heart, and he will allow her to keep the facade of being anything else if she so wishes.
Then comes Tulin. Tulin, for as long as Link can remember, has been an adventurer at heart. He has all he needs at his home village, all he could ever ask, and the wilds give him all he could ever want, but comfort in the latter isn’t easy to come by sometimes. So Link's idea is something.. seemingly simple, but not so much to make.
Link takes months to make it, longer than any of the other gifts. He has to mine and buy rubies, both of which take time and energy. He has to carefully dye all the thread and fabric he needs, but Sayge is kind enough to lend their services- as well as their keen eye for color. Riju takes the rubies to Gerudo Town so they can be prepared by a proper expert on them, the best anyone could ever know. Link loves the jewels that come from Isha, he knew when he got the finished product returned that he made the right investment.
And eventually, a rhythm builds. Piece by piece, color by color, the gift comes together. And it’s ready by the time Link goes to Rito Village next to join Tulin on a journey.
The day goes as it always does, when Link visits. Tulin still wears the Secret Stone around his ankle, and the colors of the band holding it are still as vivid and clear as they were the day he received it. He even wears a similar, braided band Link made to ‘counterbalance’ on the opposing ankle.
Green, Red, Yellow. May the Windlines carry you far, and come home to me alive. You won’t fight alone.
Link had made it, admittedly clumsily, when Tulin first became a Sage. Link promised to make a nicer one, when he could, but Tulin had refused. He was attached to the gift, it seemed. For the best- Link never found the time to make a better one, as much as he hated that fact.
Link finds Tulin in the Village, assuring and reassuring too many times over that he would be fine. He’d be back in a few weeks with Link, and it wasn’t like they were going to go fight Gleeoks or anything- though Link was sure Tulin would beg to do so.
Maybe they would, but Link would be the one to determine that.
They spend about an hour at the nearest Skyview tower after, Tulin watching the Purah Pad over Link's shoulder as the Hylian points out all the destinations he wants to hit with Tulin- major hotspots for big monsters (no Gleeoks yet, to Tulin’s disappointment), historic landmarks and cool scenery he thinks Tulin would like. There’s no shortage to what he wants to show the young Rito, and there is no shortage to what Tulin wants to see.
So they head to the Leviathan Skeleton there in Hebra, first. Then through the snowfields, carefully avoiding the Gleeok there, to Mount Drena. Tulin meets the Great Fairy (after Link has a long, long talk with Mija about appropriate behavior with Tulin, which she respects) and gets some of his gear upgraded.
Then they go farther east. They check out Thyphlo Ruins, and that’s where they stop for the night, next to the Skyview tower. They set up camp, with Tulin helping clear out and scatter any monster bones they find so that no Stal-monsters pop up first, and then they start to settle the camp itself.
Tulin usually brings a hammock to sleep in, when they go on trips, and when Link returns from checking for any wandering monsters, Tulin is setting up the poles for that. Link takes a deep breath, hand resting on the Purah Pad as he walks over.
Once he’s gotten the boy’s attention with a couple of short, chirp-like whistles, his hands rise to talk. “So, before you set that up any further, I wanna show you something.” He signs slower than he normally would, knowing Tulin can understand him but not always keep up.
“What’s that? I thought we saw all there was to see here.” Tulin perches on one of the poles he has set up, a perfect T-shape for doing so. “Is it something you brought?” His head tilts, eyes shining with a youthful curiosity that Link has to adore. The boy still has that, Link kinda hopes he always will.
“Yes, I actually made something. It’s a gift for you. I’m sorry it took me so long to make it for you, I wasn’t sure what to make until a couple months ago."
Tulin perks up, hopping off the perch and landing right in front of Link, making the older step back a little. “Really? It better not be a new band, I told you I didn’t want a new one!"
“No no no,” Link signs rapidly, “It’s way cooler than the band. Step back and cover your eyes, I want you to be surprised.” When Tulin doesn’t do as Link asks, Link repeats the instructions twice before Tulin finally groans and walks away, wings over his head.
Link quickly lays out his gift next to Tulin’s setup, making sure it’s not too close to the fire and smoothing it out as best as he can.
When it’s ready, Link whistles again for Tulin’s attention, and he is flying over in an instant. He lands next to the laid out gift, and he seems confused for a few moments before he starts bouncing and flapping around, excited enough to start chirping.
It’s a new hammock, made in the same standard adult size that Tulin usually uses for long trips. Technically it’s far too big for Tulin now, not that the other one wasn't, but it should last long enough for Tulin to grow into. It’s all quilted and embroidered, a feat that took him almost every second of the months he spent on it.
It's all made of the same durable material that Link’s paraglider is made of, made to last and endure the elements- all the elements, even Death Mountain in Link’s experience.
The quilted part itself is an image. Tulin from the front, head bowed, hands cupped to hold his Secret Stone. The symbol on the Secret Stone is embroidered in white and blue, and the symbol is repeated on the backing as well. Green and blue swirls behind the young Rito’s image, like the shrines that have long since dissolved from Hyrule.
The border of the quilt is a rhythm of colors.
Yellow - You’re part of my family, and I am part of yours, as long as you will have me.
Orange - I aspire to keep up with your skill, your stories will be told with awe as you grow.
Dark Green - The Windlines favor you, as your family does, as I do. May they carry you far.
White - These Colors don’t define you though. Don’t be tied down by them, make your own. I know you can. I know you will.
Red - Above all, brother, come home to us, and come home safe.
Every Red patch bears a ruby, and every Yellow patch a piece of the Light Dragon’s spikes, all rounded like beads, all held there by thin but sturdy wiring sewn under the patch, and Link knows the magic in them will keep Tulin warm in any blizzard, any horrid winter. Link won't let him be stuck in a mess like that unprepared, not again.
Tulin looks like he might cry. Link isn’t sure if all he wants to convey to the boy gets across quite right, but Tulin seems to understand the gist of it, judging by how he outright tackles Link after a little bit of Tulin's excited hopping.
He starts rambling, and Link stumbles around a bit as he wraps his arms around the Rito who’s clinging to his torso like he’s a tree in a storm. Link can make out a vast appreciation of the gift, he hears an I love it somewhere in there, and if Link wasn't already grinning (he was), he wouldve then.
Eventually, Tulin untangles from the Hylian, and they set up the hammock together. Tulin is far too careful as he hops in, and Link laughs, signing that “you don’t need to be so careful Tulin, just don't purposefully rip it with your talons and it’ll be fine!”
And that night, Tulin sleeps soundly, deeper in his dreams than a Frok in the Depths. And Link finds himself proud. He thinks he made the right choice, as he himself drifts to sleep. He will not have such a peaceful sleep, he rarely does, but it is made slightly more gentle by the knowledge that Tulin will.

The Comfort of Words
Day 3/ of Zelink Week, hosted by @zelinkcommunity, for the prompt 'letters.' BOTW pre-TOTK.
Also on A03 here
The letter sat at her side table, temptingly smooth in its unopened state. The attendant had silently exchanged her letter for this an hour ago, the seal had barely been cooled and she hoped the ink had not smudged in her haste to finish it.
Zelda’s fingers itched to tear the envelope, but instead turned her eyes to the paper in her hands. They had become a replacement for the presence of the travel companion who had been at her side a hundred years ago and only recently been reunited.
Unfolding the worn letter for the hundredth, Zelda smiled as her eyes scanned the familiar handwriting:
The Silent Princesses you planted are blooming. I know seeing them in person is what you would prefer, but I took a picture with the Sheikah Slate just in case the wilt before you return. I think about you every day as I pass them in the garden before training.
Refolding the letters, Zelda ran her fingers over their folded edges, taking comfort in their softened edges before tucking them into her dress above her heart. She knew the words by heart, repeating them in her mind as she waited to make her entrance onto the stage.
Six months. She had been touring Hyrule for six months, giving speeches, blessing rebuilt homes and temples, and letting the people see their newly crowned queen. As rewarding as it was to see how far Hyrule had come, she was ready to return home. Impa had insisted on an all Sheikah entourage for her first official tour, while Link helped the newly established military, and the separation wore on her the longer she was away.
One hundred years of solitude had found her lost among unfamiliar faces. Even those who remained, Impa, Purah, and Robbie, had changed during her fight against Ganon. The only face that had not changed was Link’s. She had known his memory would not be intact but was constantly surprised by how much he remembered on his own.
They had spent many days together after the Calamity, recovering and reacquainting, and Zelda craved the simplicity of their routine in Hateno. It was a life they had made for themselves, free from their duties for the first time. It should not have surprised them when the year was over, and their simple life changed. Setting up a new monarch and parliament system became the priority, beginning with the rebuilding of Hyrule Castle.
The importance of rebuilding never stopped her from daydreaming about the life they’d left behind and the relationship that had developed in those early months. They would rise from their shared bed, enjoy a simple breakfast, then spend the day working on their own, coming together to share lunch or to show the other their progress. Occasionally, this meant meeting each other on the hill between the village and Purah’s lab, but Zelda loved the casualness of it.
Now, they were lucky if they were able to share a few minutes together in the evening without some attendant interrupting to ‘preserve the decorum’ of how a royal courtship was supposed to work. Zelda was sure Impa was the driving force behind these, as the old woman was determined to keep as many of the traditions of the monarchy alive. Though she was her friend, every time Impa brought up how Link rarely slept in his room and that it was proper to wait until they were officially married, Zelda felt like she was being scolded by a grandmother.
It may be silly to admit, but I’ve started counting the days until you come home.
One last speech. One where she would announce their marriage and she could go back home. That was the mantra that she repeated to herself when the loneliness of travel without Link threatened to carve a hole in her heart.
Paya’s appearance brought Zelda out of her homesick thoughts.
“They’re ready for you, Zelda,” Paya said with a friendly smile.
It had taken almost the entire trip for her to convince Paya that calling her by name was alright. In that time, they had grown close enough for Zelda to call them friends.
“Thank you.” Zelda squared her shoulders, doing her best to embody the seemingly effortless authority of her father.
The stage was the same as all the others: garlands of flowers draped along the podium; the royal crest hung behind in polished gold. Already arranged were local members of the government and newly elected parliament officials that would join them on their return to the castle. Zelda always felt the weight of her crown while she walked, the already heavy adornment made heavier by the eyes of everyone turning to her at once.
Her words were practiced. Memorized after many nights pacing her rooms before her departure while Link listened. He always insisted he loved hearing her talk about anything, especially after the comfort her left behind memories had given him.
I read your letters describing the wildlife you see, and it is almost like your beside me again, pointing out the details on the flower petals.
The remembered words would have caused her to stumble if she had not spent all that time practicing. Her heartbeat fluttered with her nerves as she took a breath to steady herself. One last part, then it would official and public. Placing a hand to her chest, where she felt the folded letters crinkled against her skin, Zelda spoke:
“I have one final announcement this day: I, Queen Zelda Bosphoramus Hyrule, and the Hero of Hyrule shall be wed under the auspicious eye of Hylia. With our union let Hyrule always be protected. So long as we live, we shall serve the people together.”
Elated cheers erupted from the crowd, the assembled officials rising to congratulate her, and Zelda felt the weight slip of her shoulders just a little. Another letter from Link waited in her room, as there had been since the start of her travel. It was enough for now.
They would see each other again soon.
