You know what? Not only I wanted Wille to become king – I wanted Simon to fucking flourish in the royal family.

I take no criticism. But I will elaborate.

I wanted Simon to be accepted there either by him making a space for himself or better yet – him and Wille making that space together. I wanted that because it seemed like so much hopeful and optimistic message than ‘monarchy was never going to be accepting of him and he would hate it.’ I wanted that because in a story like this those things are – or could –  be possible.

I kind of reject the idea that ‘it wouldn’t be realistic.’ First, because Young Royals isn’t that realistic in the first place, and second because I believe telling stories is the exact place when you can create new, more hopeful realities.

It would make sense in this universe – because why not? Why Simon had to be shushed and thrown away if Wille wanted to accept his role? Couldn’t Wille make this role something positive? A nice dude in a position of power for a change? And yes, with Simon at his side – BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK NOT? He could have it all. (Only if someone was willing to write it)

I get back to the speech at the end of the 2nd season – there was Wille throwing everything there in the open: let’s stop keeping secrets, let’s stop the harmful traditions. LET’S EVOLVE.

I was so hopeful it would be where changes are going to start. Wille made his statement – seemingly finally ready to use his position to do something useful, having to go through hardships by wanting to keep Simon in his life, learning to use his voice in the situation he was given – and it was such a great setup to go further that route. Yes, Wille can speak against the system. He can make the system better. With Simon. Of course, with Simon.

What did that jubilee speech result in? The school going under investigation because apparently Wille inspired people to come out about their experiences. Um, cool, I guess.  But for the characters it almost had only negative consequences. Season 3 was almost all about punishing Wille for doing it.

I hated when throughout the story Wille was told to better find someone from his social class – and I loved when he rejected it. I was so hopeful he would stick to it. I wanted him to grow into his role because he would be great at it (Again, if someone was willing to write it)

The reality in which August gets punished? The reality, as others pointed out, was already in place in this universe?  Swiped under the rug by the ‘legal process is unfair and average person have no power against it.’ I can’t fucking believe anybody thought that making August the future king was a good idea. Yes, even after all the soul-searching he did in s3, and no, I will not accept the notion that becoming a king is a ‘punishment.’ And I hate that Kristina was seemingly willing to accept that – she was maybe never a perfect mother but taking August as her successor? Like, please.

As for Simon himself. He could have it all too. People in this school belittled him and made it all about him being from the lower class – I thought we were rejecting that. I wanted him to be someone whose voice is heard. Simon could bring as much change to the world as Wille could.

s3 thoughts in no specific order bc I'm trying to not start crying rn

- TYE INTIMACY WE'VE GOTTEN BETQEEN THEM AND THE LITTLE HUGS AND TOUCHES AND KISSES

despite everything that's still happening I'm so grateful for all of that because they've come so far from kissing in a dark hallway and at the very least they got to be a normal couple for little moments

- sara and her arc with her dad and I'm so glad we got more on their relationship but the way it fell apart was so heartbreaking??? and it did feel like it was coming but GOD did I feel for both of them

- erik!! and finally bc we as a fandom have known he was not perfect and he wasn't the best person, but for wille to realize that and because of something he went through as well was just so fucling painful, but I think really really needed, and I think it's one of my favorite arcs jist based off first watch

- felice addressing all the little microaggressions and sifderneces and struggles she goes through was SO important and I'm glad this season finally started talking about how kids outside of the status quo even in hillerska feel, and they did her character much better justice this time around

- august and nils were actually one of the most interesting parts of s3 and I liked how they handled their past with the initiation but also just august's character. he's still flawed as all fuck and a massive asshole but I did empathize w him, and him and boris's convo was rlly necessary to his character

- idk I feel like all of wilmon's conversations and attempts at communication have been very choppy and unfinished, and I'm really really hoping they do get a chance to have a sit down and talk things through, because there still so much they haven't figured out with each other

- omar and edvin's acting was on POINT thus season I genuinely am so emotional over how they portrayed the heartbreak and confusion their characters went through ;;;;;

- linda finally getting some fleshing out and we see a fuller picture of the eriksson's dynamic, and simon finally relying on them more and expressing some of his frustrations with always being the strong one like oh my god

- kristina and wille's final fight was probably one of the most interesting and heartbreaking, but I'm glad it happened and there were many points that wille needed to make. I'm praying they figure themselves out in episode 6 and talk things through. I do feel for kristina though and the parallel between her and wille dealing with how to deal with erik's presence is so heartbreaking

- some discussions about the monarchy and the system! honestly there was no way to develop that plotline fully given it's the last season and they still only have six episodes, but I am grateful for what we got

-for now just waiting for episode 6 (PLEASE let it be longer) and for everything to tie up before my final thoughts

Hey :) So excited you asked about this one 😍 it was born out of an amazing prompt by @thefrizz13 and involves a fiercely anti-monarchy popstar!Simon and absolutely smitten fanboy!Wille. Basically they meet when Simon decides to be a little shit and serenade Wille onstage during one of his concerts. Also featuring, among other things, some highly suggestive Insta comments, the Royal Court meddling like it’s their job (hah), Simon writing some happy music about Wille for a change and, of course, Erik teasing the shit out of his brother.

This may have started as a one shot and evolved into a small (multi-chapter) epos. I may also be co-working with a certain someone 😏

And I know you didn’t ask but let me shamelessly include a little snippet here because waiting to share things is the worst 😅

Wille’s hand is slightly shaky as he reads the announcement on his phone screen for what must be the fifth or sixth time.

See, Wille wasn’t born yesterday. He’s aware musicians go on tour every once in a while, especially after they’ve just released a new album. He also knows that the singer in question has done just that about a month ago. Probably better than anyone, actually. Those twelve songs have been on repeat so much, he’s pretty sure his Spotify Wrapped will end up being all Simon Eriksson. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing whatsoever. Just one more way to make it official how big of a fan he is.

Which brings Wille back to the issue at hand. Simon Eriksson is going on tour. And Wille wants nothing more than to snag the first front row seat he can get his hands on. Which is probably any single one he wants, given his royal status. Unfortunately, that’s also what’s holding him back from clicking the ticket link attached to the announcement.

It’s not just that Simon is what Wille’s mother would call “flashy” - “that’s the opposite of easing people in, Wilhelm”- he’s also not exactly holding back about his distaste for the monarchy. Which is to say he’s gone so far as to write and release a song literally called “Fuck The Monarchy”. (It’s an absolute banger. Wille knows every line by heart.)

People always wonder how people can choose to enter the royal life, this is how they get you. You're in love. You want to hold on to that.

The reveal at the end of this episode wasn't really much of one. It was pretty obvious, at least, that happened to August and Erik was involved.

TBH I keep thinking Lisa's going to take it darker and, I think it's right there, and then it doesn't go over the edge.

I agree with @tack-boris When she makes that promise to Wilhelm that he can come out at 18, Kristina is probably being sincere in the moment. But I think her practical side would quickly reassert itself. By the time Wille’s 18th birthday was approaching, she and the royal court would’ve had plenty of time to come up with new reasons to persuade Wilhelm to stay in the closet.

Also, even if this is all subconscious, rather than a conscious calculation, Kristina knows most high school romances don’t last. Wilhelm is only 16 still. With her concession in 2.02, she’s now bought herself two years breathing space during which time Wilhelm will pretend to be hetero in public. The odds of Simon and Wilhelm still being a couple by the time Wilhelm turns 18 are pretty low, statistically speaking.

First love hits very hard. Once Wilhelm and Simon have flamed out, Wilhelm may behave more rationally (from Kristina’s point of view) with his next boyfriend. And his next boyfriend might be from THEIR social circle, and understand the importance of discretion. In which case by the time he’s 18, Wilhelm might have lost interest in coming out.

If when he’s about to turn 18, Wille is dating someone like Nils, who LIKES the closet, it would be very easy to convince Wilhelm not to make any big announcement, but to stay “discreet”. Because he wouldn’t just be outing himself, he’d also be outing a boyfriend who’d prefer to stay closeted.

I don’t think Kristina is a monster. Manipulative, yes, but not monstrous. She loves her son. But she’s a monarch as well as a mother, and she has a lot of difficulty separating her mom role from her role as Queen of Sweden.

Finally, I think Kristina comes across as softer and more maternal in S2 because the show introduced the Marshal of the Realm, Jan-Olof. He gets to be the onscreen bad guy, not Kristina, in terms of trying to remove Wilhelm from Hillerska in 2.02 and cancelling Simon’s song in 2.05.

Jan-Olof’s introduction also makes it clear that Kristina has senior advisors, and she can’t act unilaterally. Or theoretically she could act unilaterally, but it’s a bad idea. Kristina has to take the advice of her most trusted and experienced senior courtiers into account. Yeah, at the end of the day she’s still the queen, and they all still work for her. 

But she pays them for their advice. It wouldn’t make much sense to pay them for that and then always do exactly what she wants to, regardless of their opinions. Particularly when there are conflicts between Kristina’s role as a mom and her role as a monarch with a problematic succession issue. Jan-Olof and the others are there to provide an “objective” alternate way of viewing issues that Kristina, in her mom role, might not have considered.

In 2.03, Kristina says “this wasn’t my idea” when she tells August he’s Wilhelm’s backup. That suggests Jan-Olof, Minou, and other senior courtiers came up with the idea of August as a backup and pitched it to Kristina until she came around and accepted it. Yeah, she COULD have told them all to fuck off. But they had convincing enough arguments that she went along with their idea.

Now, personally, I think the royal court’s advice to the queen to groom August as Wilhelm’s backup is TERRIBLE. And her taking that advice makes me question her judgment. Not on the moral grounds that he’s a goddamn sex offender who violated Kristina’s only surviving child. On the entirely practical grounds that his actions in leaking the video damaged the monarchy and caused a PR crisis. He put his own desire for revenge above the monarchy’s image, and involved the Crown Prince in a sex scandal that had implications for the succession.

[please note: I do not think the video was a sex scandal, it was in fact a sex CRIME. But Wilhelm’s parents and the royal court treated it as a sex scandal to be hushed up, and the paragraph above is written from the royal court’s viewpoint]

Kristina and the royal court are worried that Wilhelm is too emotionally volatile and can’t handle the pressure of being Crown Prince, and someday king. But the guy they want as Wille’s backup is so emotionally volatile he leaked child pornography of his own cousin to the entire world, thereby also outing him to the whole world as not straight.

And August did that incredibly destructive thing all because he was angry that his cousin had humiliated him in front of the Society. August’s need for personal vengeance outweighed any consideration of damage to the monarchy as an institution. His impulsive revenge on Wilhelm also made him (August) into a sex offender who could’ve faced public disgrace and prison time if Kristina and the royal court hadn’t hushed up his crime.

In terms of anger issues and erratic behaviour, there isn’t much to choose between Wilhelm and August. If anything, Wilhelm looks better, because his anger issues haven’t made him into a sex offender. The only two things August has going for him that make him a better bet than Wilhelm are:

A) August is better at disguising his emotions in public than Wilhelm. In 2.06 at the jubilee, August is still reeling from Sara’s rejection, but he projects effortless charm in the receiving line anyway. By contrast, Wille is still reeling from the shooting range yesterday and Simon’s rejection of his attempt at comfort. In the receiving line, Wille is just going through the motions. He doesn’t want to be there, greeting strangers and making chit-chat. It shows in his lack of enthusiasm.

B) August is definitely heterosexual, which means Kristina and the royal court can rely on him to marry a suitable girl when he’s older and have babies.

So I think the royal court’s advice to Kristina about August in S2 was ill-considered. August looks good on paper and has a lot of personal charm. But him leaking the video should’ve thrown up multiple red flags about his judgment and impulse control. But the fact that she took the royal court’s lousy advice about August suggests Kristina does not have absolute power. When her inner circle are suggesting one course of action and her gut is suggesting a different course of action, she won’t always listen to her gut.

Theoretically, Kristina could always pull rank on her smartest, most trusted advisors. But if she does that too often, her smartest courtiers will find other jobs. She’ll end up with a bunch of yes men telling her what she wants to hear, rather than what she needs to hear. She clearly values Jan-Olof’s advice, and he’s not the only member of her inner circle whose judgment she finds reliably good. Even when it conflicts with her own take on a given situation. And even when their advice is actually very flawed.

I've been thinking a lot about Queen Kristina lately and i just need to share my thoughts:

First, i think the portrayal of the Queen is quite different over the two seasons. In the first one she's always cold with Wilhem. Always. Even after the video leaks and we could agree she has a more understanding approach to the situation, i feel it's just damage control. If Wille got mad he could do something drastic (come out publicly, for instance). In season two, though, she is a lot more nuanced, more understanding, more human, more like a mother. To me that feels a little weird.

On the other hand, there's one thing that makes me really uncomfortable about her in s2. When she tells Wille that he'd only have to wait 2 years, until he's 18, to be with Simon and then they'd make a plan so he could supposedly come out... I just don't buy it. Maybe i'm wrong and i'm being unfair to her but i feel she's just making time to have Wille content and quiet but when the time comes she'd come up with some other excuse. Or probably she'd have everything planned by then to keep things as she wants them to be. I don't try to say she's evil. But i just don't think she'd put the whole country system at risk and give up all the sacrifice she's done for the sake of it just bc his teenage son likes boys.

literally the first thing wille hears out of simone’s mouth that’s not a song is basically fuck the monarchy and he is like yes please immediately looking around the classroom like is anyone else hearing this is this allowed no one has ever spoken like this around me ever please keep talking. the poor boy just had his entire world flipped not just because he’s falling for simone but because simone is such a revelation. it’s so funny but so precious. wille deserves everything good in this world oh my god

but also while in real life i'm 500% behind abolish the monarchy, within the construct of the young royals world, i want wilmon to have their cake and eat it too? 🤔

to me, the ultimate victory within the young royals universe is for wilhelm, strengthened by simon's love, to remake the system into a place where he and his love can be happy. a place where he gets to keep his birthright and respect the legacy/memory of erik and his family, all while also having his freedoms and right to love the man he loves.

my ideal ending for the story is wilmon breaking and reshaping the monarchy into something that suits them. for them to be princes together who can use their voice for change, a kind of direct 'fuck you' to all that traditionalism that tried to break them. narratively, that is just more satisfying to me than wille abdicating (though i totally get why that is such a popular and loved fandom theory).

it's so interesting how in the phone call in 1x03 talking about wille's attraction for someone, the first thing erik has to say about it is "enjoy it, before everyone else starts having an opinion on it".

it really shows how, while wille thought of erik as some flawless crown prince who was perfect in the role, internally erik struggled just as much as wille under the weight of all that scrutiny and public opinion. except erik didn't even feel like he had the right to complain, because like even wille says in the scene, he is the crown prince so everyone is allowed to have an opinion about him.

the system is really toxic at every level to the people living in it for this family

still can't get over how in one of their first interactions (that weren't even really interactions) simon really just went "fuck the monarchy" while looking at wilhelm like THAT. no wonder wille was immediately like "YES please fuck the monarchy, i am the monarchy"

Things I Think Each Character from YR Needs to Hear

Wille- You are enough and despite what's been drilled into you your entire life you need to do what's best for you and not anyone else. It's you life; no one else's.

Simon- You don't have to be strong all the time. It is not your responsibility to fix everyone else's problems.

August- He's already been told this but "fuck you August" lol. No, all seriousness, I think he needs to hear that there's more to life than just status.

Sara- It's better to have a few close friends you can be your complete self around than to be surrounded by people, but when you look in the mirror not recognize yourself

Felice- No is a complete sentence. You're going to burn yourself out if you base your life choices around pleasing other people and living how they want you to

Queenie- If your crown and the monarchy was taken away tomorrow, you'd still be a mother. Think of that the next time you talk to Wilhelm. He doesn't need Queen Kristina all the time; he needs his mom.

Ok, hello my friend. I don't have any more big overall color/light schemes to analyze, so instead I'll just over analyze this scene to the point that everyone thinks I'm insane:

The Changing Colors.

And it is important, before you ask. Because we see three main color lights in this scene. Now, what are they:

Red, Blue, and Gold.

We've talked about all of these already. I think it's really significant that they are all in this scene and they're rapidly changing between them. It can show a pattern of thinking.

So let's start with the Blue. (And there are two different shades of blue shown) What do the blue scenes mean? To an individual character, the blue is self-destructive. To "coupled" or "paired" characters, the blue signifies the change of a relationship. We can apply both of those to this situation. Because they aren't quite coupled yet, so this can still very much be an individual scene, even though they're together.

If we think of it as self-destruction: Simon is letting himself get close to the one person he thinks is going to fuck him over. And then he's right. Wille does fuck him over later on. So this scene, the first time he shows that he likes and trusts Wille, it's the beginning of his downfall whether he likes it or not. And for Wille, this is the first time he's letting himself acknowledge that he likes Simon and it's more than just a "he's kind of interesting" way. He lets himself get really close. He's touching Simon, he's admiring Simon. He knows he can't do this because of his legacy and how he's supposed to represent the monarchy. He knows he can't like Simon. So, this is also the beginning of his downfall. It is the ultimate self-destruction to let himself hope that he can have some kind of crush on Simon.

If we think about it as a change in their relationship: it's the first time they're alone. The first time they're talking. The first time they're touching. This is the first time we see them act like "Simon and Wille." It is a fundamental change in their relationship.

Now the red. What does the red mean? Danger and desire. Also the danger of desire. It is clear that they like each other in this scene. We as an audience can see it, and we can see them figuring it out. They're flirting, and they're touching. The red is about their desire for each other, yes, but it's also about danger. For both of them. This is a dangerous thing that they're starting. Because Wille can't be in this relationship. Simon can't trust Wille about this relationship. They desire each other, and it's dangerous. They're going to get hurt, and they kind of know this before they even acknowledge that they're crushing. Hence we see Wille deny it repeatedly. "I'm not- I can't"

Finally, the gold. What do the gold scenes mean? Intimacy. And this is them being a form of intimate for the first time. It's their first conversation in private. It's the first time they're letting themselves touch each other. Again, this is the first time we're seeing Simon and Wille as "Simon and Wille." It's not a kiss, or hand holding, or their first time, but it is them first showing a kind of trust with each other. A physical trust, at that.

Now, we take into account the changing lights. How fast it is. What they mean. What might be going through their heads at the time.

Blue, Red, Gold, Blue, Red, Gold.

Self destruction, desire, intimacy, change, danger, intimacy.

So that, my friend, is what I can offer you. More color theory. More overanalyzed bullshit that probably means nothing to anyone other than me. Thank you.
