Quebec summer championships
In August, there was Quebec summer championships in figure skating (you can watch it here) and here are some highlights:
Gabby Daleman! That’s it. That’s the highlight. The music of both programs suits her so well - Libretango and Samson and Delilah. She won the comp by over 30 points, whereas she led only by three points after the short.
In pairs, it was the first outing of James/Radford. They appeared only in the short. And you know what? They do look good. I’m not a fan of painting the skills of skaters - I may not like - in bad light and intentionally diminishing their accomplishments. So, I’m saying they do look good I’m just not sure I want to see them, especially at the Olympics...
In junior ice dance, we had two parties on the ice in the rhythm dance, I love it when skaters go full out. It was Jordyn Lewis/Noah McMillan skating to Perm and Grace Pale/Kieran MacDonald skating to Le freak. If anyone is missing Too darn hot from last season, be advised that it’s possible to skate even blues to it as proved by Jamie Fournier and Anthony Haddad.
Of course, the most memorable performance in juniors is without question Hannah Lim/Ye Quan skating to Gangnam style. It’s totally not my cup of tea but objectively it’s a great choice by the choreographers, especially in the Olympic season. But honestly, I loved much more their FD to Cats. The cat moves at the beginning! The speed! Such a mature performance. And the lift when Hannah hooks up her leg behind Ye’s neck!
And we have two amazing FDs to Oblivion! I love love love it. You know the traditional way, rose in the hair, matador moves... Just watch Eliane Foroglou-Gadoury/Felix Desmarais and Jordyn Lewis/Noah McMillan.
Of course, I was the most interested in senior ice dance... (I mean FD)
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m no fan of this season’s RD. In fact, I can’t stand it and probably won’t watch it much this season because it’s no fun for me to watch it, I know nothing about street dance, about hip hop, about modern music and I don’t even feel any desire to get to know something about it. And it’s certainly no fun to read about my complaints so...
I think that the example of that kind of typical choreo we’ll get in RD this season is Holly Harris/Jason Chan - Can’t get out of my head. It’s not that modern, there are attempts at appearing modern and it’s fulfilling all the requirements...
Out of the lesser-known skaters I liked Maia Ianneta/Liam Carr skating their FD to Clair de Lune. And also Torri Hollstein/Joshua Burger with their FD to Never enough. It was so nice, calming and with great lifts.
There is a team from New Zealand! Charlotte Lafond-Fournier/Richard Kam. Their RD to Stay with me is a bit softer than the others, it’s quite nice with an interesting lift. And I loved their FD to Seven nation army so much. They even have military-like costumes! The marching, saluting! Even fighting in the step sequence!
I believe there’s a conspiracy going on. I’ve never cared much about Tina Garabedian/Simon Proulx-Senecal but their RD to Respect is quite nice and they skate their FD to Autumn leaves and Luck be a lady. I mean Autumn leaves sung in French by Andrea Bocelli is one of my absolutely favourite songs (here it’s Sinatra’s version but anyway) and my favourite program by my favourite skater - which is obviously Javi - is Guys and Dolls. So, I simply have to be a fan ;) They look really ready for Nebelhorn to fight for the Olympic spot in a month.
What is quite interesting is that Alicia Fabbri/Paul Ayer skate their RD to the same music as Hurtado/Khaliavin. I do think H/K are more “contemporary” but this was also good. However, what is amazing is their Frida FD! Omg, Paul has half of Frida’s face on his shirt. And what a rotational lift. Alicia just hangs on Paul’s neck with her leg. This is flamenco on the ice.
And finally, finally after more than a year my favourites Marie-Jade Lauriault/Romain Le Gac on the ice, now representing Canada. My notes say: “I love them, I love them even in this hell of a dance.” Ehm.... yeah that’s all I have to say about my feelings towards them and towards the RD (Downtown). Great twizzels and so much flow in the FD to Some nights. Much more than in the past.

1 NAZAROVA Oleksandra / NIKITIN Maksym
Taking in the moment of those Olympic Rings. Classy move. Score 97.34. 162.87
2 GARABEDIAN Tina / PROULX SENECAL Simon
This music takes me back. I’m a sucker for this type of music. They look very elegant. A little sass never hurt anybody. Three elements under review. Delightful skate. Score 101.16. 167.03
3 KAZAKOVA Maria / REVIYA Georgy
Very innovative thus far. Issue with opening set of twizzles - I guess not L4. 🤷🏻♀️. Dark music indeed but intriguing. On the verge of goth/steampunk. I liked it! It drew me in. Eerie. Score 97.25 164.33
4 TASCHLEROVA Natalie / TASCHLER Filip
Brother/sister team. A full bodied piece of music. They exude power. Very dramatic piece. The tempo changes. Spring in Buenos Aires. Argentine Tango. The build up through the performance was sublimely done. Score 101.10. 168.32
5 TURKKILA Juulia / VERSLUIS Matthias
Lyrical. Nice lift sequence. They create lovely lines. She has such joy on her face. Very light and airy skating. Nice slide. A couple of elements under review. An absolutely lovely skate. Score. 105.65. 173.88

False positive robs Armenian ice dancing pair of shot at the Olympics

False positive robs Armenian ice dancing pair of shot at the Olympics
April 2, 2021 – 14:26 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net – A competitive ice dancing pair that trains in Montreal and represents Armenia missed out on a major Olympic qualifier after a false positive Covid-19 test, CTV News reports.
Tina Garabedian and Simon Proulx-Senecal touched down in Stockholm a little more than a week ago to compete in the World Figure Skating Championships — the top 19 pairs qualify for the Winter Olympics.
Hours before they were set to compete, Proulx-Senecal got a phone call that destroyed those chances: a Covid-19 test he took the day before had yielded a positive result.
“That test came back positive. I got the test Friday (March 26) morning, the day of the competition. I was shocked right away,” he said.
In a last-ditch effort to remain eligible, he took a fast-tracked test, but didn’t get the result back — which was negative — until the day after the competition.
“It’s over, it happened, and it shouldn’t have happened,” Garabedian said. “That’s what I’m having trouble with.”
Proulx-Senecal described a feeling of helplessness, of “being quarantined in the room, not being able to ask anyone or be involved in the process… We were victims right from the start.”
It’s an especially tragic twist given how long they had prepared. Because the pandemic postponed the competition a year, they had an extra year to prepare their routine. The theme of the competition was “Broadway Musical” and they had prepared a routine around the musical “Mamma Mia,” involving tunes by Swedish super group ABBA. In a similar competition three years ago, they finished 22nd. The Olympics cut off for the Olympics is 19.
Now the pair is going through Armenia’s sporting federation to petition the International Skating Union — which organizes the competition — to find some sort of solution. They still have a shot to qualify for the Olympics through another competition in Germany in September.

I.AM live - Ice Academy Montreal training session
Maybe I’m in the minority here but I loved it loved it loved it. It was just amazing to see skating - ice dance - live after such a long time. Yeah, maybe they all pushed the idea “we are one family” too much but who careeeees. (This will be a mix of notes from the time I was watching it and some newer thoughts). The majority of the skaters showed their RD and as kind of expected the majority decided to keep their RD from the last season. Some were doing some minor or bigger changes to it. In the order of appearance 1) Sasha Fear/George Waddell - RD Singing in the rain (it will be their first sr. season). That’s all I noted down. Little did I know that I’d absolutely fall in love with their dances a few weeks later. 2) Smart/Diaz - wisely keeping their crowd-pleasing Grease RD, they were doing a new lift and it will be so cooool
3) Rikako Fukase/Oliver Zhang - new RD My funny valentine
4) Fear/Gibson - keeping the Blue brothers RD because who wouldn’t want to see it again.
5) Komatsubara/Koleto currently in Japan, showing their FD to Un histoire d'amour from 2018/2019 season. If there’s a song in Italian or French you can be sure that I’ll be a fan immediately.
6) Hannah Lim/Ye Quan - new Canadian team, CATS RD. Sooooo cooooooolll
7) Lauriault/Le Gac - NEW RD Chicago!!!!! I'm so exited, their last season's programs were a bit too calm and this is amazing, so hot. Now I just hope we’ll have a chance to see the program somewhere.
8) Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen (kissing live) and keeping their Bonnie and Clyde RD with the great twizzles.
9) Chen Hong/Zhuoming Sun training now in Beijing and they managed to get a new FD - I will wait for you.
10) Hawayek/Baker - keeping their RD. They looked as the most prepared team at the moment.
11) Chock/Bates - didn't skate, they were just returning on the ice after an injury. The whole interview didn’t reveal anything. They will have “a new program” but no more information.
12) Tina Garabedian/Simon Proulx-Senecal - keeping their Mama mia RD with the goal to qualify for the Olympics as the first Armenian ID team ever
13) Holly Harris/Jason Chan (Australia) - keeping their A chorus line RD. I loved it.
14) Hubbell/Donohue NEW RD. Burlesque (Shevchenko/Eremenko skated to it last season) It will great for them. It was new, so they didn't perform it that much. (And now we already know how great it is)
15) Wang/Liu - training in Beijing. Keeping their Chaplin RD. Oh yess.
16) Papadakis/Cizeron will have a new RD and FD. Thank god. And the FD will be TANGO. I'm so excited. They showed just a small bit, still working on it, but it will be great. Well, now I wonder if they’ll keep working on a new RD or toss it away, because no Skate Canada, no French masters, no Internationaux de France, maybe Europeans... and maybe Worlds. If it wouldn’t be a bit safer for them to go with the “old” RD if they’ll have a new FD on top of that...
17) Lajoie/Lagha - keeping their Westside story RD, sigh... working on new harder lifts...
That’s a looooot of ice dance teams and they even didn't show Emmy/Aissa. And in spring Reed/Ambrulevicius announced their move to Montreal too, but due to travel restrictions they couldn’t go there at all. I wonder if they cancelled it, or if they train at their old place but remotely with Montreal coaches or how does it work.
