I like to imagine that Betty’s and Simon’s wedding was just around the corner when all hell broke lose. Maybe they were postponing it due to the mushroom war and said fuck it cause they were tired of waiting and if a bomb dropped on the chapel so be it.

I like to think it was barely a month away when he got the crown. That as a joke and a partial truth he said he’d wear it so Betty could really feel like a princess marrying her Prince on their big day. I like to think she smiled right before the crown took Simon over for the first time.

I like to think that’s why she didn’t fully run away. Cause they were so close to their special day and she hoped both literal and figurative storm would pass. That this would be a funny and crazy story to tell on their honey moon.

I like to think Betty heard wedding bells as she jumped through the portal and past their wedding date to a hopeful future with Simon.

I like to think Simon kept the bands, long after forgetting her and hid them when he realized the symbol of their unfulfilled promise wasn’t safe with his madness anymore.

I like to think some where they got to say “I do.”

The Story of The Starless Sea is this: Zachary and Dorian- being drawn in to an adventure more interesting than their real lives, finding the story more important and interesting than their lives above, wanting to be part of it, and slowly becoming characters instead of people, their story ending in a sea of possibility, their old selves dead and gone.

Lenore and Simon, nameless, purposeless, devoted to the story and nothing else, identity no more than backstory, and backstory part of a larger backstory, slotting into stories freely and without restraint, unable to find each other. But then, just within reach.

Fate and time becoming human, against all odds, their plan to end their part in playing characters coming to fruition, ending their story on earth, telling us that the ending is the whole point of it all. Saying, this is not us. Saying. This is not all we are. Saying. We are more than characters in a story. Saying. We want to live.

The Narrative of The Starless Sea is this: there is a magical harbor full of every story to ever exist, and people visit the harbor all the time, a little while at a time, and experience the joy of it, but very few stay to fill a role in the harbor- acolytes, guardians, keepers.

Those who leave can go on with their lives and can return whenever they please, but those who stay inevitably lose themselves to the stories.

All three orders give up their names, their lives, their identities, and devote their purpose to filling a role in a story instead.

They brand themselves as belonging to the story only. They die within the story, in service to it.

If they try to leave while still in service to it, the story will follow them, and bring them back, and they will die in service to it still.

The Purpose of The Starless Sea is this: Reading, experiencing a story, when done to escape reality, staying within it and never letting it end, becomes a denial of the self. The longer you stay, the less of yourself you get to keep.

The Painter, who is also sometimes called Allegra, drags the story with her onto earth, still devoted to it, already having lost herself completely, and dies in service to it, in the role she had never truly left behind.

Eleanor, who is no longer Eleanor but a rabbit, dreams of people without faces feeding her papers with all the things she is supposed to be who never ask her who she is.

Fate and time, so much stories that they had never been anything else, must fill their roles with other people so that their story may end. They carry a million names and faces and only know change, but through story, stop being forces and start being selves.

Kat, left behind, lonely, grieving, keeping a diary (grounded, purposeful), leaving it behind to step through the door into a new harbor, into the story her friend had left her for.

You may drown yourself in stories to escape. You may live in their worlds, speak their languages, befriend their characters. But you will not do it as yourself, because that is what a story is. If you wish to be yourself, the story must end. And after it ends, you will still be changed by it. Because that is what a story is.

Only you will ever know what happens next.

“3…2…1… Happy New Years!” the crowd yells as the silver ball drops. Couples kiss, smiling into each other's mouth. Kat sips her drink, then chugs it, and sets off to get a new one. Tears well in her eyes, but not enough for anyone to notice. Everyone is too busy dancing. laughing. loving.

What’s wrong with me? The quiet voice in the back of her head asks. She looks around her while she pours the watermelon vodka into her glass. Zachary and Dorian. Mirabel and The Keeper. Simon and Lenor. Why can’t I be that happy?

“Hey Kat! I haven’t seen you since last year,” Zachary drunkenly laughs, winking at the end. Kat laughs, rolling her eyes at the ‘since last year’ part.

“What’s wrong?” Zachary asks, the seriousness in his voice contrasting the setting. People chatting over loud music. Neon lights. A small disco ball hung from the ceiling fan.

“Nothing! It’s nothing” Kat says quickly, forcing a small smile that she knows Zachary can tell is fake, but she’s hoping he’s too drunk to catch.

“I know you’re lying. Here, follow me” Zachary pulls her towards the end of the hallway and into a bedroom. The two sit in a bay window overlooking the bright skyline of the city that never sleeps.

“Now. Be honest. What’s wrong?” Zachary asks, concern filling his brown eyes.

Almost as if a switch has flipped, Kat starts crying. Sobbing harder than Zachary has ever seen her, not that he’s seen her cry much. This is actually the first time, and Zachary has no idea what to do. Zachary rubs her back and Kat continues to cry.

“I’m sorry,” Kat says, breaking the silence.

“There’s nothing to-“ Zachary starts, before getting cut off by Kat

“I’m sorry I'm not like them. That you can’t introduce people to me and say that I have a partner. That it’s always just Kat. I’m sorry. I just don’t get it. Why can’t I be like everyone else?” Kat begins to cry again. Shock paints Zachary’s face. Be like everyone else?

“What do you mean, ‘be like everyone else’?” Zachary asks quietly

“You know what I mean, Z. I’m not like you and Dorian. I can’t love like you do. I’ve tried, god I’ve fucking tried” Kats voice cracks and Zachary has never felt such heartache.

“I don’t know how to love. What’s wrong with me?” Kat cries into Zachary’s shoulder. For a moment, he doesn’t know what to say. But he knows his friend needs him, so he has to say something.

“Nothing is wrong with you Kat. Nothing”
