Not to be like a crotchety old grandpa waving my cane at middle school hooligans but I do wish (especially) young, very online queer folks would take a sec to learn a little more about like political movements and social change
#like yes rainbow capitalism is superficial and frustrating and oftentimes hypocritical#but throwing a tantrum about it doesn’t tell those companies to do more meaningful work#it tells them we’re not a market and therefore they should for profit’s sake target other audiences#which like yeah IS shitty and not how social change should work#but we do live in a capitalist society atm#and until The Glorious Revolution Directly Leading Us to Utopia shows up#we work with the tools we have#similarly politics#like listening to the decision on the Louisiana bill#the legal arguments used to table it make me bristle a little#I don’t think children’s identities should come down to parents’ choice#(this is a simplification)#BUT by using the arguments they chose#those legislators are speaking to a population that can be convinced to care abt this shit#and doing it in a way that for instance I would struggle to#and that’s good!!#because it is actually better to have momentum gaining towards a goal#than it is to get locked up in infighting and pushing away potential support#people run races for a lot of different reasons#but the fact that everyone is aiming for the same goal#is what makes it a race rather than chaos#anyway I am off my soapbox this is just. a persistent frustration#personal

This might seem like an "old man yells at cloud" situation, but it's just wild growing up and being told how dangerous distracted driving is - how, at highway speeds, you can traverse the length of a football field (100 yards, 91 meters) in a matter of seconds - how one split second sending a text while driving could result in a potential fatal crash, and then getting on the road as a driver and being surrounded by billboards. Their entire purpose is to catch one's attention, so they're lining major roads, which tend to be highways. How is it that you're told how important it is to never be distracted while driving, but still being advertised to?
At best, this type of advertising is an eyesore to pedestrians and motorists and a general waste of electricity to light it, and at worst, it is an active danger considering they are there to advertise and therefore, must catch people's attention.
I'm not even against advertising in theory, but this particular mode bothers me so much and I hate how pervasive it is - especially in large cities or highways.
#politics#i don't know much about são paulo banning marketing billboards but on paper i want that here in the USA#as a motorist it at best just makes me more anxious driving in those larger cities because i want to FOCUS ON THE ROAD#and passing 5000 billboards per mile isn't helping actually!#i've gotten good at filtering that out of my FOV but it's still fucking exhausting lol#i especially hate those modern electric billboards. despise them actually#i am aware that advertising is a critical aspect to business management in some cases...#...but it shouldn't risk the safety of the populous for you to advertise to them and i see things like billboards as risking safety...#...i feel similarly about online advertising in that so much of it risks internet user's safety...#...such as flashing ads online which risk triggering epileptic seizures in light/photo-sensitive folks#distracted driving (texting): NO >:( || distracted driving (being advertised to): YAYYYY :D#i've been driving on my own for a few years now and i've been thinking about this for ENTIRELY too long

the thing is that whats happening is really scary. not because everything is going to fall apart - he may do far less damage than we fear.
but because this outcome has people afraid for their lives and uncertain if they want to live. democracy should never leave such a large proportion of people fearful.
yes, there will always be people upset about the outcome of an election - usually around half. but there should never be people interested in harming others or constructing conspiracy theories, and absolutely never people interested in harming themselves.
American politics, radicalism and individualism has gone too far and its dangerous.
#NOTE this is a very western and privileged perspective - its completely different in countries with already hazardous political landscapes#im trying not to think or post about it#but i see SO MANY PEOPLE posting helplines#and messages of hope#as well as people confession that they are having suicidal thoughts after this#its terrifying#yes poltics has long beeen scary but now a global superpower??#its quite devastating#that a radical man has developed a cult following who overlook his criminal convictions#that people fear a 'leftist' opinion that is similarly progressive as our 'right wing' in aus#and a third of people didnt even vote. even though this might impact them#and will CERTAINLY impact people they know in some way#its just awful and tragic when you look at what happened#our brains like to imagine the worst case scenario#i struggle to believe that this term will be as bad as we fear#but i fear what this choice means for america#for politics#for the world#thank u for coming to my ted talk#us politics#american politics#us election#donald trump#kamala harris

so far my one caveat for ballad of sword and wine is, the on screen torture (of both people and animals) can get! intense!! however. those are uhhh less memorable than some of the other on screen events buds, the on screen flirting via threats, the on screen threatening via flirtations, the biting (the biting!)
#guess a second caveat would be this is kinda classic in the very few roles for women#but I do personally enjoy the few ladies who are infrequently present#the complicated politics are laid out in a way that yours truly the forgetter is able to follow along#and the action scenes (of many varieties!) are fun to imagine#qiang jin jiu#mine#I'm on volume two of the seven seas edition for the record#the magnetic tension between two people in similar positions who are similarly ruthless#but must wear various roles...#gawd

all the labour mps that abstained:
bullshit response by labour mp rushanara ali as to why she abstained on the snp amendment (x):
a completely non-satirical response by labour mp chi onwurah as to why she abstained on the snp amendment (x):
and there are so many more. these people do not care that palestinians are being murdered, that a genocide is occurring or that they are the ones enabling it. please, if you live in the uk, put pressure on your mp; make them realise their seat is not safe and that their constituents demand calls for an end to the occupation of palestine now 🇵🇸
see how your mp voted here
#free palestine#and these are just 2 labour mps there’s literally so many more#fuck labour fuck keir starmer fuck all of these cowards#only posted these two bc i found their responses particularly stupid but i guarantee u every single labour mp that abstained has said#or will say something similarly stupid and uneducated#please please please protest and raise awareness but also ensure these people know that you don’t support them#uk politics

absolutely love the wrh raises wwx au! is there a reason that the sunshot campaign is happening so many years later than canon in this au? did wwx play any role in delaying the start of the war?
Yes! It's my personal headcanon that novel!Wen Ruohan only started the war because he realized that his own sons were nowhere near as talented as Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen, Lan Wangji, etc; but in this verse, Wen Ruohan postponed the start of the war because he had Wei Wuxian.
As in canon, Wen Ruohan destabilized the Nie sect several years before Wangxian met by murdering Nie Mingjue's father, and Lan Xichen never stood out as a threat because he dropped out of the competitive cultivation circuit to raise Jingyi when he was only 23. Lan Wangji stopped attending tournaments the same year LXC did, so Wen Ruohan paid very little attention to the Lan sect until he stumbled across Jingyi night-hunting with Jin Ling about fifteen years later.
At that point, Wen Ruohan was reasonably confident that Wen Xu would be a decent successor; but Wen Xu and his wife had three daughters and refused to keep trying for a son, and Wen Chao had been unable to father any children despite having a wife and several mistresses. What was worse (to WRH) was that Wei Wuxian was unmarried—under Wen Ruohan's own orders—and had no heirs other than Sizhui, who was categorically incapable of fighting anything but fierce corpses/yaoguai because he was terrified of injuring or killing another person. As a result, Wen Ruohan finally attacked the Cloud Recesses when Sizhui was about 17.
#asks#wrh raises wwx au#mo dao zu shi#wen ruohan#reference#tldr; everyone spent the 20-ish years between the CR arc and the start of the war lying low#jfm was suspicious of wrh but could never be sure he was behind nmj's dad dying#so he kept jc out of the public eye and told him to underperform at public tournaments#lxc just felt awkward about competing with his peers after becoming a father#so he took over lqr's sect leader duties and decided to focus on healing cultivation/emergency night hunts#nmj was similarly focused on parenthood and didn't have much of a public presence in spite of being a sect leader#jzx just straight up did not like wrh and avoided him like the plague#and lwj was not about to talk to people outside his sect or get involved with politics if lxc wasn't going to force him#(which he wasn't going to do. forcing jingyi and jueying to survive on non-lethal amounts of chaos was hard enough for zewu-jun)#so wrh didn't realize how strong the other sects were until he finally met jingyi and jin ling

"If enough of us vote third party for president, we could actually GET somewhere with our policy goals!"
Baby girl you can't even get a majority of third party/independents in a single state legislature. In the past 30 years there have been seven independent/third party state governors, and of those, only three were genuinely independent. The rest either got elected as a R/D and switched mid-term when they alienated themselves from their state party, got elected as I and then switched to R/D during their terms (with some of them having served the R/D parties before), or served as proxy candidates with heavy backing and support from one of the major two parties. Even VERMONT, a relative stronghold for independent/third party candidates -- the place that brought you Bernie Sanders -- doesn't have a majority of third party candidates. And when I call them a stronghold, I mean they are the only state (I know of) that consistently elects (less than a handful of) Independent candidates to the state legislature; the place is still dominated by Ds and Rs.
"The highest power in the land can't actually be voted on so there's no reason to vote for the democrats"
Hey princess here are some high school civics question for you: How are Supreme Court judges nominated? :) By what process are they appointed? Who starts that process? :) Why is the Supreme Court considered reflective of who has won the presidency? :)
#the reason you 'cant get anywhere' with your policies is bc youre not the political strategists you think you are#some of you barely know how your own government functions and it fucking shows#and it would be one thing if i looked in ur bios and u were like. 15 or smthg.#but 30?!?!?! you're 30 yrs old and you dont understand that the rsn rvw was overturned under biden is bc trump got his foot in the door???#youre 30 and youll rant abt the long lasting effects of reagan's presidential policies but you cant fathom trump might have left#a similarly long-lasting legacy??#youre 30 and you think the echo chamber you put yourself in on the internet is proof that clrly a vast majority of ppl agree w u#and theres no need to play politics when the democrats couls just wave their wands and fix everything if they werent so evil#despite the fact that both of the ladt two elections about half the population was voting for trump???#the tight margins btwn repub and democrat in congress shld tell you that#you are 30 and dont understand what strategic voting is?#youre 30 and you dont understand the difference between state laws and federal laws#youre 30 and youre upset that joe biden is a 'fascist dictator' but not in the way that gives you everything you want?#youre 30 and youre acting like biden and the dems operate in a vacuum without interference feom political enemies and#moneyed interests that have thrown up lawsuits and obstructionist tactics and misinformation#everytime the try to do something good?#youre 30 and you think palestine will be saved if joe's not in office when the only other viable candidate in the running#was cozy with netanyahu and advocated 'finishing the job' re:palestine and moved the embassy to jerusalem#in a clr fuck you to any palestinian feelings?#youre 30??? youre 30 and you never outgrew the 'mommy and daddy made me mad so I'm gonna smoke to get back at them' mentality???

clem is such an interesting character and so different from what i usually see in IFs like I've yet to see an RO who is scared of everything? in a world of girlbosses and mansplainers we need the clems
thank you!
i'm glad that they feel different :-) when i started tnp, a lot of romance stories, especially fantasy or supernatural, tended to put the mc in Clementine's role. there are exceptions now, of course, i'm not trying to make a broad statement, especially since within IF that's actually something that's changed a lot over the years, but i definitely wanted the mc in tnp to be the competent, protective, "mysterious stranger" type, which is an archetype that used to (typically) go exclusively to love interests.
which means that we get to have poor little meow meows like Clementine as our love interests, instead :-) i also really like having Clem as a bit of balance, because they're life has been so different from everyone else's - Merry is a career criminal, and we've seen that she has no hesitation getting nasty and violent, while Noel, Lea, and the hunter have all been entrenched in the Order for their entire lives, with all of them also being very familiar with violence and comfortable with it or at the very least indifferent towards it.
even though Clementine is running from something, and is just as much as a fugitive as Noel, compared to the others, they really are the "normal" one, who just had their life upturned by running into a group of hardened fighters and criminals. or at least, upturned in a different way than it already was.... we'll get to see their reaction in the second half of chapter 2, but Clementine deals with what happened in Blackwater very differently than everyone else, because it's not like something they've ever really experienced before.
#Talia is a bit like Clementine in that regard as well but since her mother was ousted#she had to deal with a lot over a short period of time#so she's a little more desensitized than Clem is#like Clem has been around violence before but not like this#and even then it's not something that's like. brushed off easily. and it's usually something they observe from a distance#they're used to more underhanded violence. like lying and political intrigue lmfao#not sure if this makes sense LOL but you'll get it once we see them in the next update#also i like to joke w nyehilism that clem and rohan are similar but in opposite directions#rohan isnt really afraid but compared to the mc in project hadea xe can't just fight back like nash or the others#similarly clementine cant brute force the hunter into helping them like merry or noel does#clem is the kind of trembling chihuahua that hides in ur purse while rohan is the kind that bites your ankles#and theyre similar for other reasons too.. teehee#clementine#ask#anonymous

i gotta say
the people who put polls on donation posts for engagement feel like the same kind of people who make pertinent political posts and say shit like "don't ignore this you must reblog it or you're a bad person"
#this is not to degrade anyone who is asking for donations#cuz like shit sucks and you should get all the help you can if you need it that desperately#but it feels so manipulative to employ a tactic like that#this site is where i go to be silly and have fun. polls are easy to do that with#and similarly to the posts that are like ''hey some people don't want to engage w politics on their fandom space blog''#it's the same kind of sentiment of like Don't Guilt Trip People into doing something when they're just trying to have a good time#it just feels gross to have that happen to you

Man. Thinking about it, my Elwin would have loved to have a daughter. Not that he doesn't absolutely adore the boys, but, y'know.
The closest he came, obviously, was Jill, but 1. he would never force that sort of relationship onto her, nor expect or demand it from her, out of respect for her. 2. He would never force that sort of relationship onto her out of respect for Silvermane and her real family, as well. She is, after all, Silvermane's baby, and nothing will ever, ever change that. Elwin wouldn't want anything to change that. And 3. he would never force having that sort of relationship with Jill upon his wife, either, out of respect for both Jill and the Duchess.
But something about the idea of having a little princess to dote upon, and watch Ana dote upon and adore and(hopefully) thrive with, just made his heart feel warm and fuzzy. Bonus points if she looked like her mother, in the way that Clive looks like him...
#Headcanons#He doesn't believe that gender has any influence whatsoever on one's capabilities#It's not even a matter of anything to do with politics or status -- he just wanted a daughter ; 3 ;#He has the boys to bond with... It would be so sweet if Ana had had a daughter that she too could bond with similarly

Instead of making insensitive Nazi jokes about a Jewish person's work regarding how Steven Universe treats redemption/forgiveness, we should've instead talked about the late stage capitalist hellscape the show exists in where it's an example of people (Steven) wanting to do good and make a difference but just unable to actually have the mental strength to both dismantle the corrupt system in place and live with the consequences of that , of having to be responsible of ensuring a better system is put in place. Both the ending of Steven Universe and Steven Universe future is that some people become too mentally exhausted and instead try to compromise with the system in place to try fixing themselves
But I don't think anyone's ready for that discussion
#ask me#su critical#su criticism#I still think the diamonds and the way the show handled some stuff was bad#But it makes a lot more sense if you look at Steven and his relationship with the diamonds through the current political landscape#Instead of using Hitler as a gotcha about how kids should murder their problems#Steven's family situation is far more similar to the British royal family and USA presidents than anything else#I think Sugar wanted a show about kindness but it unintentionally showed how awful late stage capitalism and it's system are#And I think it made people feel uncomfortable with how they'd behave similarly in Steven's position#I haven't engaged with the show after season 3/4 besides spoilers so my criticism is flawed obviously#But wanted to throw my two cents here#Tw Nazis#tw anti semitism#Tw Hitler

Have you checked out Jasmine Sherman and Brittany Jones? They’re both third parties and honestly I checked some of their policies out and it looks very promising. Between them and Claudia De La Cruz I feel hopeful about possible candidates. I just hope one of them wins and are actually able to do what they say they want. Because I know the senate and the house would push them back as hard as possible.
I hadn't heard of Sherman or Jones, but yeah. I like the policies they're talking about.
For people who want to know more:
If none of them end up on the ballot in my state, I will be so pissed. And possibly, so will the poll worker who has to figure out how the bleep to get a write-in vote on their voting machines.
#I've been a poll worker a few times and the issue never came up#so I imagine most of the poll workers would be similarly confused#ask#us politics#2024 presidential election

New Scotland Yard: The Come Back (1.2, LWT, 1972)
"This wasn't a sudden impulse. It was deliberate and calculated. He had to break in to get at the old man, and then - well, you saw what he did to him. I don't know if he's a psycho or not, but I do know he's a sadist and I know what treatment I'd hand out."
"Yeah, I can guess."
"It's the only way."
"You've a right to your opinion, just don't try and convert me."
"I wouldn't dream of it, I know what you think."
"I think it's just as well your job ends when we catch him."
#new scotland yard#the come back#1972#lwt#classic tv#tony hoare#tony wharmby#john woodvine#john carlisle#barry warren#claire warren#kenneth cranham#betty romaine#kenneth colley#robert hartley#mark dowse#geoffrey morris#shelagh wilcocks#after a thoughtful and provocative opener‚ this second episode feels a little more run of the mill; a classic 'villain out for revenge on#those who put him away'. we do get a little bit of debate about the possibility or not of reform whilst imprisoned‚ but it's brief stuff#where the meat of the episode is just identifying and tracking down the 'bad guy' (a young Ken Cranham; similarly not enough#time is devoted to considering the mental health of his character and why exactly he has become dangerously violent during his time#inside...). one odd thing; the first episode sort of established Carlisle's character as having some socialist sympathies‚ putting him at#odds with the greyly impartial (but probably vaguely conservative‚ with a small c) Woodvine. weirdly‚ their politics appear to have#switched entirely here; Woodvine is reticent to demonise Cranham without solid proof of his involvement‚ expresses some sympathy#for his situation‚ whilst his subordinate Carlisle is now apparently in favour of the death penalty and dismisses the idea#of an insanity defence out of hand‚ sneering that it's a cop out abused by serial criminals. perhaps it's just that this is early days#and different writers are playing with these characters that aren't entirely nailed down yet‚ but it's a weird contrast to their respective#positions in the previous ep. Warren returns as Woodvine's journalist brother in law‚ so it looks like that's a recurring role#and poor Ken Colley gets rather underused as an informant (or grass as Woodvine puts it)

Made a Pillow Talk (1959) playlist but I really don't feel it would be ethical to post. The gender and sexual politics of that movie are soo deeply messed up. It's a good playlist though.
#the#sunday in new york#playlist is still in the works#SINY has similarly questionable gender/sexual politics#but feels less egregious

Watched Longlegs on a plane and was kind of disappointed! It was a fine horror thriller that went too middle ground on its *spoiler* supernatural elements. I would have preferred either having it be a very subtle open ended "was it real?" situation by the end OR really go for it. Lee's "powers" were really vague and, when it comes to crime thrillers, it's way less engaging to have our special agent intuit the case through psychic powers than to have her actually solve it. The comparisons to Silence of the Lambs were always going to be made but I do think this took some inspirations from that film, and tbh I wish they have stolen more from it. Good tone throughout but once the final reveal with the mother was made the film becomes kind of lame. ALSO the fact that Longlegs was ostensibly correct in his beliefs (religiously speaking) deflates his character and Lee's mom as well. The issue with movements like Satanic Panic and witch trials is that the people in power are Wrong. The devil isn't mind controlling mass swathes of the population, witches aren't real, a woman didn't her your pig and a gay person didn't turn your child trans. But then movies like Longlegs come out and it's like actually ☝️🤓 what if Satan was real and was mind controlling people into murder. Lame!
#finnisshortfor#finnema friday#Longlegs#i didnt hate the film#but i wish it was better#there were the bones of something interesting but the execution wasnt there#i think you can have some subtle supernatural happenings and power#and still make the film very menacing and overbearing#Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW is a good example of that#say what you want about SOTM but it was very well executed in a way that longlegs isn't#the gender politics aren't really touched on even with Harker initially shot very similarly to Starling#it doesn't even have much to say on religious extremism#which films like Maxxxine (another film that i wish was better) at least confronted head on#longlegs kind of dances around any potential themes you could apply to it#a bit shallow#longlegs spoilers
