barely awake as your pet begs for attention, and he says it with that sleepy raspy voice whispering right into your ear…and you’re just so proud of him for actually sleeping and staying in bed instead of being a workaholic that you get up and take care of it so he can stay cuddled under the blankets. Ohhh I can see it so well, your pet hops onto the bed, a cute little thing you both decided on adopting as a step toward the little family you've always talked about late at night, before starting the little sounds and actions of needing attention.

At first, you're ready to pass it off as a momentary thing but the little baby is NOT giving up and that's when you feel the arm around your waist tighten.

You can't even fault Chris for both wanting to get up, especially given the fact this was the RARE time he went to bed early with you - so, you huff out a tired laugh and wiggle your way out of his arms.

"Alright, alright, I'm up." Scooping your fur baby into your arms, you spare the sleeping man a glance, "We're both coming for you when the sun's up."

And as if to make a point, he snuggles himself deeper under the warmth of the blanket.

DDLV: Character Ranking

I was on Facebook this morning, and since the most recent update a lot of people have made their own personal “character ranking”. I have seen lists like this before, but not for a long time so I decided to jump in! 

Let me start the body of this by saying, this is my personal opinion. I would love to have a conversation if you would do this rank differently, but a respectful conversation please. My personal bias, I prefer older Disney, and have a huge thing for Villains. 

With the most recent update, at the time this tumblr will have been posted, we have yet to receive some foreshadowed characters like Simba and Nala. This ranking was done based on characters within the Disney Dreamlight Valley game, not so much on the characters in general. But one’s view on the characters in general is the basis for it in some ways anyways.

I am about to watch the 2019 lion king.  SPOILERS FOLLOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT FOR SOME REASON...

I will be judging it compared to the original, HOWEVER, I fully intend to judge it also in it’s own merit as they were deliberately going for a realistic vibe. All these years in college, I BETTER have figured out how to do this without too much bias. Onto the analysis questions I will be answering!

How close to the original is it?

Do they have the same scenes? 

The opening was pretty spot on. I enjoyed that quite a lot, though seeing the antelope like whoosh made me snort, it looked really awkward. 

They kept most of the iconic scenes or remnants of them in some way.

Do the scenes differ? 

There is a long scene with a mouse before Scar tries to eat it and I found it... unsettling? Because I knew that mouse was gonna be trapped by him and even if it gets away I disliked that. However it DID make Scar really look like an ass right away so... that works I suppose. 

Do they cut any scenes out from the original?

they certainly shortened some

Do they add scenes not in the original? 

The mouse scene is longer

They left the scene with Serabi and Mufasa that they took out of the original. Very unsettling.

I did like that they showed Nala leaving.

They added several scenes. I think some of them weren;t entirely necessary but that’s just me.

Are the iconic characters recognizable (in a crowd or up close)?

Not really

Scar’s silhouette looks more like him in shadow than in person.

Arguably Nala looks the most like her cartoon version.

Are the voices similar to the original in some way?

I mean Mufasa definitely. The voices aren’t bad, in fact they are pretty good. If they could have kept the whole cast that would have been a lot more interesting in my opinion.

Are the characters expressive like they are in the 2D movie?

While they are not as expressive as they are in the movie I was actually surprised at how expressive they WERE. It reminded me a lot of like those old dog movies where they’d use real dogs and animate their expressions? But done in a much better way. 

What they DID do instead of the facial expressions was a lot of body expressions suited to what animal they were and I actually thought it was pretty good. 

“See all clean!” - a lot more expression than I anticipated actually, considering how much people were saying the expressions were nonexistent. I think they paid good attention to the body movements. 

That being said, the really dramatic and sad parts needed more. I have seen sad animals and you KNOW they are sad. It needed more than what was given. Ear expression would have helped here, lowered head, tucked tail, anything to make it seem like he was devastated would have been better than what they gave.

In fact he looked more sad AFTER he was chased by the hyenas?

 Are the iconic songs in the movie?

Yes, though some of them are shortened or the lyrics changed which was strange to say the least. 

WHY WOULD YOU SHORTEN BE PREPARED? It’s like one of the best songs! They leave the Lion Sleeps Tonight but not THAT???

Colour plays a huge part in the original for many of the songs and dramatic scenes, did they use colour in the same way to elicit mood and enhance the scenes?

It is too realistic to have many colours which is disappointing, because this is CGI, and the possibilities are endless. They already showed fireflies earlier with Rafiki, why not put them in the scene where Mufasa and Simba are playing on the hill at night? It would have brought light to a scene that is otherwise too dark. 

The use of misty shadow when Scar approaches the hyenas wasn’t bad but I feel more could have been done with it. As a fan or, and one who works with, light and glow and how light can really set the mood, I think more needed to be done.

GOOD lighting with the fire though

Am I feeling emotionally connected to the characters?

I did

Am I enjoying the music?

Indeed

Am I enjoying the animation?

Yes, I liked it. It was pretty nice.

Is it realistic? 

Do the animals look real? 

Yes. Very realistic in manner too.

Do the backgrounds look real? 

YES

Do they move like real animals?

Yes! Very convincing, very good!

Eyes convey a lot about mood and emotion, are the eyes convincing? 

Sometimes there wasn’t enough, but generally there was a good deal of emotion in the eyes.

They talk in this movie even though they are supposed to look like real lions and such- is it awkward or does the talking look and/or feel natural?

It looked very good. But it was weird that Nala smiled a few times and yet they didn’t let the others???

Is it cinematic? 

Am I left on the edge of my seat? 

No but it’s probably because I know the story

Was I drawn in to the action?

I was!

Did the scenery take my breath away and/or immerse me into the thick of things?

It was very realistic and I was quite impressed. I had to remind myself that it was CGI.

Does the cinematography or CGI leave me wanting? 

There were a few times I was taken out of the moment from the realism of the animation but that’s me being picky.

Pacing can be everything, was the pacing too fast or too slow?

I think it was good, though they should have given Scar his song.

Is it for Kids?

This is ultimately a children’s movie- would kids enjoy it?

Yes.

Can kids sing to it? 

Yes

Is it too scary?

Possibly, mostly because it’s realistic

Is it too dark?

I think it’s not

Is it too realistic for children?

Possibly

Ok right off the bat, they say that Serabi is leading the charge against the hyenas and then she is there to give him a bath when he goes home? WEIRD continuity right there. I know he says “There are no hyenas you just chased them off” but it still felt odd within the timeframe presented.

they say Nala is afraid of Rhinos but a few minutes later they are literally walking by them and she is not afraid???

They JUST say he farts a lot and the next moment Simba is literally following RIGHT behind him instead of beside him.

The one who plays Pumba..... ah... probably shouldn’t have been singing..... maybe it’s harsh of me but a lot of that sounded off. 

Circle of life, fine, seeing Simba’s fur getting eaten and then promptly being shown the dung beetle that has it is just gross and unnecessary.

They already did Beauty and the Beast, Timon didn’t have to Go There. 

LIONS. DON’T. PURR.

Interesting: 

The hyena lands look a lot like the termite spires in the second Lion King which is interesting to me. 

Shenzi as the leaders of the Hyenas? Interesting.

They played a rendition of He Lives In You a the end credits which... was weird because it was in the second movie??? 

Conclusion: NOT a bad movie on it’s own. The original is still better.

A/n: unplanned, but this is just in time for Haknyeon's birthday! Happy birthday to Haknyeon, my tbz bias and the sweetest boy!

When Haknyeon enters your apartment with his arms wrapped protectively around his now-bulging sweatshirt, you knew something had to be up.

When the bulge begins to wriggle around and let out tiny, shrill squeals, you knew he had brought in the one thing the apartment complex owners said not to.

A pet. And not just any pet, it seemed.

As Haknyeon carefully removes the small animal from under his sweatshirt, he has one of his signature grins on his face. He holds it out to you, cradled in both hands. "Can you hold him while I take my sweatshirt off?"

"Hak..." Your attempts to keep a disapproving look on your face are failing as you reach out and gently take it from him. "A piglet? Really? You know the rules about pets here!" A small giggle leaves your lips as you cradle it to your chest, rubbing your index and middle fingers between it's ears.

"Well it's a good thing I'm just visiting, huh?" He tosses his sweatshirt onto the back of your couch, leaving him standing in his black and white T-shirt and jeans. "I'll take him back home with me when I leave, I promise! I'd hate for you to get into too much trouble because of this." You give him a playful glare as you say "you better", but there's no malice in your gaze or voice.

"So! What's this little guy's name?" The question barely makes it out through your laughter, as the piglet has started snuffling around you. A soft nose grazes up and down your forearms, the sniffs tickling your skin.

Haknyeon beams at you as you hand the piglet back to him. "This is my son!" Haknyeon declares proudly, holding the piglet up as though he were Rafiki holding up Simba on Pride Rock. "His name is Ggul!"

"I can certainly see the family resemblance" you quip through suppressed laughter.

"Hey!" He sets the piglet on the ground and clutches at his chest dramatically. "You wound me!"

You hold your hands up in surrender, laughing as Ggul trots around your furniture, carefree and happy. "All I meant by that is it's obvious that cuteness seems to run in the family!"

A warm tinge of pink coats your cheeks as you realize what just fell out of your mouth, and it's reflected on Haknyeon's face as well. He reacts first, shoving your shoulder with an embarrassedly quiet "shut up!"

To break the atmosphere, you decide to crouch down and play with Ggul a bit. Haknyeon crouches down next to you, and you play together with the little pink bundle of energy.

For being a piglet, Ggul acts pretty similarly to a puppy. He runs between you and Haknyeon in laps, making squeaky noises every so often. You remember that you have some baby carrots in your refrigerator, so you go and grab them. Sitting back down where you had been, you take a carrot out of the bag and toss it over near Haknyeon. Ggul immediately zeroes in on it, and all but falls over himself to get to it. You and Haknyeon can't contain your laughter, and Haknyeon keels over, holding his sides as he laughs at Ggul's antics.

You and Haknyeon take turns tossing baby carrot pieces back and forth for Ggul. After about a dozen rounds, he trots to a stop and simply lays down. You almost panic, but a small snort and a tiny sneeze let you know that he's just fine.

"Ahh," Haknyeon muses, "I think we wore him out!"

You chuckle a little and prop yourself back on your arms, looking up at him, since he's kneeling just in front of you.

"Want something to eat?"

He grins back at you, "What kind of question is that, y/n? You know me!"

You both head to kitchen, leaving Ggul laying on the carpet in a tired little heap, snoozing away. You pull some fruit from your refrigerator and put the carrots back, then grab a couple bags of chips from one of the cupboards.

You open one of the bags and lean against the counter. You're really glad you asked Haknyeon to come over and catch up. It's been a while since you last saw him, and he always makes hanging out so much fun. The two of you lose track of time as you crack jokes and chat, just content to be with each other having fun.

The relaxed atmosphere surrounding you and Haknyeon is suddenly broken by a squeal from Ggul, coming from the living room. You look at each other, then the squeal comes again, sounding more distressed this time. You rushed into the room, Hak hot on your tail, and you begin to look.

"Ggul?" Haknyeon calls as he looks under a cabinet. You begin to inspect the chairs for any sign of the baby piglet. You begin to call for Ggul too, as it becomes more evident that he's not where either of you are looking.

You both jump and whip your heads around at the sound of Ggul's squeal - though still muffled, it's much louder than before and it seems to be coming from the couch.

"How- how did he fit underneath my couch?" The question comes out incredulous and disbelieving, and for good reason. The gap between the couch and the floor is tiny! Nevertheless you go and crouch by the arm of the couch. You can hear shuffling noises coming from underneath.

"Ok Hak, on three I'll pick up the couch and you reach under and get Ggul, sound good?" He nods in response, readying himself.

"Alright. One... Two... Three!" You push yourself up from crouching, holding the couch up at an angle. You look down and see Haknyeon dive under. A second later he emerges with a slightly dusty looking Ggul.

"Well," you gently lower the couch back to floor, "I guess he wasn't ok alone for a minute after all! Is he ok?" You cross over to them, watching as Haknyeon carefully brushes the dust and the odd cobweb off of Ggul.

"He looks ok, from what I can see," Haknyeon responds after a couple seconds. "I'm sorry buddy, I shouldn't have left you alone!"

"Don't go blaming just yourself," you scold him lightly, "that's on both of us! But hey, look, he's alright. In fact, I think he's falling asleep on you!"

Sure enough, a closer look at Ggul's face shows his eyes closing ever so slowly, and with a tiny sigh, they shut completely. His breathing slows and evens out as Haknyeon rocks gently from side to side.

You continue your conversations from earlier, now in hushed tones, for a little while longer. You idly pet Ggul while listening to and telling stories, and Haknyeon does the same. Occasionally your fingers brush up against his as you stroke Ggul's ears, and each time, the corners of your lips curl upwards a little more.

Soon enough Haknyeon sighs quietly and shifts himself to stand up. "Ggul and I should probably get going..." You pout a little, but give a half-hearted agreement. He laughs and grins at you. "Don't worry y/n, I'll make sure to meet up with you again soon!"

You smile at that, and give Ggul a few last little pets. Then you give Haknyeon a somewhat awkward side hug, trying to avoid squishing Ggul between the two of you.

"Alright then, Hak. See you soon?"

"Definitely, y/n, see you soon!"

Looking through the reviews for The Lion King (2019) and I’m getting so annoyed. Most of them can be broken down into these talking points:

The film looks great; visually great, the photorealism makes you feel like you’re there

Stays close to the original in story and direction

The original was better

And I’m just like????? This isn’t actually helpful.

Seeing the trailer, we already knew how it was going to look, so waxing on and on about that does nothing for me. I can see that from the 1.5 minuets of footage released already.

I wasn’t expecting them to deviate too much from the original. Mufasa was not going to survive, Scar was not going to win. Simba wasn’t going to end up with anyone other than Nala. They was never any doubt in my mind that they were telling the same story.

But mostly, I’m just so over this critic bias of comparing one movie to another in reviews. Like, I wanna know how X is, I don’t care how it is in relation to Y, even if it’s a remake/original scenario. You are doing a review of a movie, not a compare/contrast essay for sophomore year Language Arts class. Stick to the task at hand and tell me if the movie holds up on its own.

Been reading reviews for Tolkein and a couple of other films - all of them are so cold and negative. Made me realise that I can't remember when I last read a positive film review. Anyone could do it - just sleep through the film and then write a load of ignorant, uneducated bullshit. (I'm not kidding, there is one on twitter complaining that Simba in the upcoming Lion King isn't bright yellow despite the fact that it is obvious that the film has tried to keep the animals realistic looking)

I’m so glad you brought this up. You’re not even wrong, you’re spot on, everything you said I’m not even kidding was what I was complaining to my friend about the other day. It’s not even just that they’re so uneducated but they’re so bias and desperate for clicks they’ll say whatever just to ride the media hate-wave. Whatever the media whines about, they’ll jump on board. A lot of reviews are overly sensitive too, not to mention they mix so much self-projection garbage into it, I don’t even get it, like are they even reviewing the film, or are they talking about their own issues and outlook on life and projecting it on a film? It’s as if I’m reading a blog, not a review.

My brother and I always make fun of this one critic, her name is Rachel, she was hating a lot of the Marvel films and then even hated on Shazam that new DC film and then me and my brother were like, okay, watch she’ll praise Captain Marvel.
