Silvia Rivera was a fierce advocate for trans rights and a trailblazer in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. Her legacy of resilience and activism inspires us to keep pushing for justice. 🌈✊ #SilviaRivera #TransLiberation #LGBTQHistory #HaveACupOfJohanny
For this week’s Friday Feature, I want to shine a light on an iconic figure whose activism and resilience continue to inspire generations—Silvia Rivera. As one of the most prominent figures in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, particularly in the trans community, Silvia’s courage and advocacy helped pave the way for the progress we see today. Her legacy is a powerful reminder that the struggle for…

I see the 🌈everywhere on my timeline which must mean #Pride is here!! Remember Pride started as a riot!! Remember it was Black and Brown Trans and Non-binary folks like #marshapjohnson #silviarivera #stormedelarverie that led this Queer Gay Trans Liberation!! Remember that all these corporations are going to change their icons to rainbow colors but their messaging will fall short because they have yet to hire QTPOC folks , or have any QTPOC in leadership or any real commitment to community! What is your commitment to our #lgbtq🌈 community? Remember that Trans folks across the country need your support and allyship. For the cis straight people in the back, remember that you buying a rainbow flag in our support is not enough. We need you to move back, we need you to redistribute your wealth and resources, we need you to rally and march when our rights are under attack. From anti-trans legislation, to anti-immigrant policies, to anti-abortion —- we need you to have our back and fight with us. And for our young #queer #trans youth, we love you and we are actively trying to imagine and push for better worlds. For our Queer Trans elders, we remember you always and we are grateful for your work and vision and your name goes unsaid. For my #Trans #nonbinary siblings , I see you and what an honor to exist among you. Here for us living and breathing and enjoying life and celebrating and imaging!! Shout outs to the #lgbtq #artists , cultural workers and healers because we keep dreaming and showing what’s possible!! Pride is a celebration, a reflection, a moment to pause, a moment to live but also it is a moment to reground into our community!! Happy #pridemonth ! https://www.instagram.com/p/CeUARXlJO92/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“The Stonewall Riots sparked annual events now known as Pride. In 1970, New York and Los Angeles held the first versions called Christopher Street Liberation Days. The first Liberation Day Parade in NYC commenced small but grew to 1000’s of participants by the end. Folks met on Christopher Street near the Stonewall and walked up 6th Avenue to Central Park, where attendees enjoyed speeches and events for the rest of the day.In 1973, the New York rally was held at Washington Square Park in Manhattan. At the time, the gay and lesbian community showed rifts. In 1973, lesbian feminists had begun to speak out about misogyny enacted within the movement. At the time some of their argument centered around drag, or what they called “the impersonation or mockery of women by men for entertainment or profit.” Drag had its place in the history of the lesbian and gay movement because queens were there the night of the Stonewall Riots. In the public discussion of drag though, the lived experiences of transgender identities who did not see themselves as drag queens were hard to convey. Lesbian feminists like Jean O’Leary saw transgender women like Sylvia Rivera as disruptive to their movement, even calling Sylvia a “man in women’s clothing” at the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade. This rift is made clear in the video below, where Jean reads a statement about these sentiments to the crowd at the rally.“
