Chrondrostereum purpureum
This post will discuss Chrondrostereum purpureum, a fungal plant pathogen that causes silver leaf disease in trees.
I made this post in response to this poll.
Fruit body and spores
Subsequent to starting as a crust on the wood, the fruiting body develops undulating intergrowing brackets up to about 3 centimeters wide, which have a tough rubbery texture.š The sterile upper surface is hirsute to tomentose and is somewhat grayish or brownish in colour. The fertile lower surface is pinkish to dark purple at first, becoming dark brownish-violet with age. Especially at the early stages of growing, it often secretes dark purple coloured liquid through a process known as guttation.² After a week or two the fruiting structure dries out, becomes brittle, and turns a drab brown or beige.š
The spores are cylindric, approximately 5â8 Οm x 3â4 Οm in size, hyaline and inamyloid. The hyphal structure is monomitic with clamp connections.š
Ecology and silver leaf disease
Chrondrostereum purpureum can be found on living and dead hardwoods, mostly on broad-leafed species, but it can also be a serious parasite of conifers.² It is a well-known pathogen of members of the Rosaceae family, especially various Prunus species², but also apple, pear, willow, maple, etc.š As a pathogen C. purpureum causes a progressive and frequently fatal disease, called 'silver leaf disease'², which causes the leaves of the tree to silver and is followed by the death of the branches.š
Distribution
Geographically the fungus is just about as widespread as its host. It can be found in woods, orchards and tree plantations in temperate climates.š
As a human pathogen
There has been a single case report which confirmed a human infection with Chondrostereum purpureum in a non immunocompromised man. The man had been working with infected plant material which caused him to get infected, however, it was resolved by treating him with antifungal medication.š

Aside from the risk of losing the occasional rose bush, the fungal disease has never been considered a problem for humans. Until now.
In what researchers suggest is the first reported case of its kind, a 61-year-old Indian mycologist appears to have contracted a rather serious case of silver leaf disease in his own throat, providing a rare example of a pathogen seemingly making an enormous leap across entire kingdoms in the tree of life.
A recently published case study describes a male patient in India's eastern region presenting to a medical center with a cough and hoarse voice, fatigue, and difficulty swallowing. A CT X-ray scan of his neck revealed a pus-filled abscess next to his trachea.
Lab tests failed to find any bacteria of concern, but a special staining technique for fungi revealed the presence of long, root-like filaments called hyphae.
Fungal diseases aren't exactly uncommon in humans, though of the millions of known species, only a few hundred are capable of causing us much harm. Ringworm, athlete's foot, and thrush commonly make themselves at home in damp areas of our skin, much to our irritation.

"You could see the signs of female aging as diseased, especially if you had a vested interest in making women too see them your way.
Or you could see that if a woman is healthy she lives to grow old; as she thrives, she reacts and speaks and shows emotion, and grows into her face. Lines trace her thought and radiate from the corners of her eyes after decades of laughter, closing together like fans as she smiles. You could call the lines a network of âserious lesions,â or you could see that in a precise calligraphy, thought has etched marks of concentration between her brows, and drawn across her forehead the horizontal creases of surprise, delight, compassion, and good talk. A lifetime of kissing, of speaking and weeping, shows expressively around a mouth scored like a leaf in motion. When gray and white reflect in her hair, you could call it a dirty secret or you could call it silver or moonlight. Her body fills into itself, taking on gravity like a bather breasting water, growing generous with the rest of her. She has looked around in her life, and it shows. The darkening under her eyes, the weight of her lids, their minute cross-hatching, reveal that what she has been part of has left in her its complexity and richness. She is darker, stronger, looser, tougher, sexier. The maturing of a woman who has continued to grow is a beautiful thing to behold.
Or, if your ad revenue or your seven-figure salary or your privileged sexual status depend on it, it is an operable condition.
If you could make a million dollars a yearâthe average income of cosmetic surgeons in the United Statesâby doing so, then female fat can easily enough be called a disease. Or it can be seen for what it is: normal, since even the thinnest healthy women have more fat than men. When you see the way womenâs curves swell at the hips and again at the thighs, you could claim that that is an abnormal deformity. Or you could tell the truth: 75 percent of women are shaped like that, and soft, rounded hips and thighs and bellies were perceived as desirable and sensual without question until women got the vote. Womenâs flesh, you could acknowledge, is textured, rippled, dense, and complicated; and the way fat is laid down on female muscle, on the hips and thighs that cradle and deliver children and open for sex, is one of the most provocative qualities of the female body. Or you could turn this too into an operable condition.
Whatever is deeply, essentially femaleâthe life in a womanâs expression, the feel of her flesh, the shape of her breasts, the transformations after childbirth of her skinâis being reclassified as ugly, and ugliness as disease. These qualities are about an intensification of female power, which explains why they are being recast as a diminution of power. At least a third of a womanâs life is marked with aging; about a third of her body is made of fat. Both symbols are being transformed into operable conditionsâso that women will only feel healthy if we are two thirds of the women we could be. How can an âidealâ be about women if it is defined as how much of a female sexual characterisic does not exist on the womanâs body, and how much of a female life does not show on her face?"

The thing about England stealing tea from China is tea was a monopoly at the time. It was completely controlled by China, and China could charge what they wanted for it, and what they wanted was silver.
So litterally everyone on the planet had to buy their tea from China, and it was a state secret. It was punishable by death kind of state secret, the hack you in to little pieces and your family too kind of state secret: like silk worms (another cool spy story out of china). Cause this is what made the Chinese Government wealthy and powerful. China was completely self contained. It had its empire, it had more peasants than you could count, it had all the resources it needed, and it didn't need anything else, but you want something from them? Well then, what's it worth to you?
So the story of how England got tea out of China is actually really cool and it involves secret agents sailing up rivers, paying people, smuggling, but also these people did not know that green tea, black tea, white tea, all came from the same plant, so there's a point where there were reports coming back that they'd found the green tea plant and were still looking for the black tea (it's all in the processing). People risked their lives for this. This is "if you are caught you will be tortured for information" level of James Bond shit.
And they did it, you know? They did it and now tea worth so little it probably costs you more to heat the water. Tea still has to be harvested by hand if you want it to be any good. It's evergreen and it has a few harvests a year, but it's only the very top of the new growth that will do anything worth drinking.
Tea was worth more than gold. In Europe tea chests had locks and keys and the mistress of the house had that key and it was as valuable as jewellery. Like sugar, like salt, these are things that are so ubiquitous today that we don't understand how valuable it is. It was a health drink, because you had to boil the water so it killed the diseases in it. People didn't know that's what did it, so these people who drank tea got sick less often, got better quicker.
Tea was introduced to the UK by Portuguese nobility, I think? Cause they had shipping that went to the other end of the world. The story of tea involves the silk road, and how empires along that refused to sell in to Europe so they had to find other ways to get what they wanted, and it involves war and Empire, and it's so very interesting.
And did you know tea is drunk differently all over the world? Like there are so many tea ceremonies! And that's what the "British" way of drinking tea is, it's a kind of tea ceremony. Taking tea with people in a ritualised way, with a tea pot, with special snacks. It's as special to us as "the way of the tea" is in Japan.
And when you step away from Camellia sinensis which is the "tea" plant it gets so much wider! Like Rooibos and Yerba Mate are two that come to mind.
Humans be like "would you like some leaf with your hot water?" And then we made it a whole thing over and over and over and over again.
I'd write a god damn book on this if I could focus long enough.

so sorry if youve talked about this before, but what is hidije? (mentioned as something Palo ysed as epilepsy treatment in the past). And id love to hear anything else about traditional medications/drugs used in this universe in general!
It's an alchemical Concoction that has fine particles of silver as a core ingredient (which is widely believed in the region to have broad purifying qualities) along with ground black pearl (specifically thought to ward off curses and evil spirits). This is why prolonged use can result in a form of argyria.
Epilepsy is at least understood as originating within the brain, so attempted treatments mostly target the head and are often the same treatments used for migraines. The two other main components of hidije are a type of willow bark (which can relieve headaches), and the leaf of the hidijenum tree (which has some sedative effects). Other herbal and medicinal components may be added as needed for the individual patient. The ingredients are boiled in wine and consumed in small doses on a regular basis.
In Wardi medical theory, the silver and pearl are spiritually purifying agents that may weaken the evil spirits that cause epilepsy (as well as most forms of disease), while the willow bark and hidijenum leaf treat the physical damage and improper bloodflow to the brain that these spirits cause. This condition is permanent and the spirits cannot be fully expelled, but regular treatment will weaken them and assist the body's natural self-purification processes, and thus should reduce the frequency of seizures.
No component of hidije is an actual anticonvulsant, and there are no direct and efficacious treatments available for epilepsy, just mitigation methods. Hidije consumption may provide a degree of physical comfort and relaxation via its sedative qualities, and (aside from argyria when used for many years) does not have harmful effects in typical doses and frequencies. Overuse can result in physical dependency on the sedative hidijenum, especially in more expensive forms of hidije in which the plant matter is alchemically refined.

Traditional medicine in Imperial Wardin is a very broad body of knowledge and folk belief. The underlying theory is related to other cultural applications of body taboo/spiritual pollution/curses, and supplemented by a degree of rigorous medical scholarship in the region (which peaked during the reign of the 3rd Burri Empire).
The core conceit is:
The body and spirit exist in a natural balance. The spirit physically inhabits the blood, and its proper flow through the body ensures normal bodily functions. The body is constantly bombarded by sources of pollution and has some internal defenses (healthy blood is a purifying agent, spitting can expel minor evil spirits, curses, and wandering ghosts invited by invocation via speech, and urination is the body expelling day to day spiritual impurities). However, the body is highly vulnerable and must be protected from uncontrolled metaphysical vulnerability in order to avoid curses and spiritual pollution. When cursed or spiritually polluted, the flow of spirit/blood is interrupted (either systemically or to certain points in the body), which can cause physical ailments (as well as more spiritual concerns). There are several kinds of evil spirit in the world, one of which causes disease. These are called dagia. They feed on the spirit in blood as tiny, invisible parasites, which can result in various ailments and contagious disease, depending on how much of the blood is infected and where pure blood flow is interrupted. Infection is much likelier when metaphysically vulnerable/polluted, but their entrance of the body is physical and occurs through orifices and wounds. Systemic infections by dagia result in contagious disease. Lifelong afflictions such as epilepsy are generally caused by dagia entering the body while in the womb (especially via the mother having been cursed), and permanently sealed into one's very being during the exceptionally metaphysically vulnerable moment of birth. Therefore, the dagia cannot be truly expelled, but may be subdued and restrained through proper treatment. (By this same virtue, a central part of any midwife's job is to dispel any curses on the infant, ensure its immediate purification, and magically shield it during its vulnerable period. Wealthier mothers may hire priestesses devoted specifically to this practice)
Diseases are both spiritual and physical in nature and thus require both spiritual and physical treatment (the lines between the two are not always well defined). In Hidije, the ingestion of silver is purely spiritual- it's not thought to act directly on the body but to purify the spirit. The willow bark and hidijenum are thought to (and do) interact directly on the body, and to help heal physical damage caused by the interruption of pure blood flow.
Treatments are a wide range of herbalism and other traditional medicines (animal parts are used as well and have a litany of ascribed benefits), strict cleanliness regiments (which double as spiritual purification), and dietary regimines. Bloodletting is used to remove bad blood polluted by dagia at certain points in the body in the case of serious infection (this is distinct from the ritual bloodletting used in prayer, which is an offering of one's pure blood/spirit. Dagia infested blood is an impure substance). A treatment similar in form (though not very similar in theory) to acupuncture is used to gently treat the blood in less dire circumstances, or as a preventative measure.
All this combined results in treatments that range widely between those that would be supported by evidence based medicine, those with ambiguous/no effect, and those that actively make things worse. All in all this system is not wildly effective but has its benefits, and is far from the worst medical system for the setting.
Main strengths
The dagia disease model understands the physical entry of disease into the body (while not directly conceptualizing microbes), leading to safer handling of infectious disease (even including barrier methods protecting the nose and mouth when in proximity to illness).
Many of its treatments are based in direct evidence, acquired both via longstanding cultural knowledge and more recent medical experimentation. This system is fluid and methods of treatment are readily reshaped when confronted with new knowledge (though not the core theoretical elements, which are rooted in religious belief and change on a more gradual scale).
As with herbalism in general, many of the herbal elements have direct physical effects on the body and may be beneficial (willow bark really does have mild pain relief properties, etc).
Wound-cleaning is understood as of utmost import (a wound is more vulnerable than orifices to the entrance of evil spirits, as it directly exposes the blood). Strong alcohol and vinegar is used to clean wounds and avoid infection (not the absolute best method, but one of the better available in this setting).
alchemy (as a form of proto-chemistry) exists and is effective enough to isolate and concentrate naturally occurring compounds with beneficial elements (ie salicylic acid from plants can be refined into a smaller and stronger doses than can be acquired in direct consumption of plant matter) (there's also some pretty damn strong drugs available by the same virtue, mostly in the form of opioids and stimulants).
Physical parasites are generally well understood (though infections by microscopic parasites will be assumed to be dagia).

My headcanons I use within my writing from DSMP, QSMP and beyond;
Dream SMP: -Emerald earrings are given to those blessed by the Death Goddess, which includes; c!Techno, c!Philza, c!Niki, c!Ranboo, c!Eret, c!Foolish, c!Wilbur and c!Tommy -c!Techno, c!Philza, c!Eret, c!Foolish are ageless beings who can travel across the Realms -c!Philza uses his crows to send messages across the servers and dimensions -c!Techno and c!Phil can force their will upon Wither creatures to somewhat guide their decisions, they are still rather unruly beings -c!Techno's hound army is made up of the souls of those he and Phil defeated in battle -c!Techno can summon them at any time to do his bidding -c!Techno and c!Phil can make the conscious decision to leave a realm when they feel they have accomplished enough -c!Phil wears a braid that now has seven beads around the end in my QSMP tellings; Rose pink (Techno), daffodil yellow (Wilbur), leaf green (himself), blood red (Tommy), indigo purple (Ranboo), caramel brown (Niki), ocean blue (Chayanne) and gold (Tallulah) -c! and q!Phil suffered from injuries that greatly reduced his ability to fly for long periods of time, in some of my tellings he loses one or both wings all together depending on the canon the story decides while I write it -c!Eret is also known as Themis, where c!Foolish is their Undying Totem -c!Eret is blind from the long-term exposure to Withers from when they were set to be sacrificed by a Wither Cult. The only way to prevent the diseases progression was the Death Goddess' blessing. -c!Eret is related to Herobrine, where c!Foolish is the Death Goddess' first child with DreamXD until he went off on a power trip. Then She found c!Phil and had c!Wilbur. Which means technicially, c!Foolish and c!Wilbur are stepbrothers in my pantheon. -c!Eret contracted c!Techno to assassinate c!George when he was crowned after c!Eret was dethroned. c!Techno's only exception to his anarchist demands is c!Eret because they are fair and leave him alone, threatening c!Dream to do the same post c!Eret getting their throne back -c!Wilbur can also communicate using his Mother's crows, whether that be within the same server or across dimensions -c!Techno went to comfort c!Tubbo after the fireworks execution cause c!Techno might act like an emotionless badass, but he will always have a soft spot for youth -The Death Goddess is the one who prepares souls for their next chance or ferries them off to their afterlife -Herobrine controls all limbos (I also dubbed them 'the Unknown One') -DreamXD's controls travel between dimensions primarily, the Goddess can also use this ability -c!Ranboo's earrings all have meanings; a small LâManburg flag (a momento to the nation lost), a bee (c!Tubbo), an allium (c!Tommy), a fox (c!Fundy) and a cookie (c!Niki) all hung from silver chains beside the gold-gilded emerald -The scars of previous deaths persist on your skin in the DSMP universe, as a reminder of how you died. -c!Eret is Harpocrates in the Syndicate, there was just never an opportunity to reveal themself as such. They were sworn in shortly after c!George's assassination.
-c!Technoblade and c!Philza make a point of brushing and braiding each others hair every morning they live together.
ALRIGHT QSMP TIME; -Everyone forgot their previous lives except q!Philza, the Angel of Death, for the first few weeks of that world. Also q!Wilbur, q!Niki, q!Bbh, q!Foolish -q!Philza still closely guards the emerald earring he will always wear

Funguary '24: Silver Leaf Fungus | Lilac Seadragon
Week 1 | Week 3 | Week 4
Coincidentally we have a dragon in the year of the dragon just a few days shy of the Lunar New Year! đ Based on the timing I posted this, it's also Valentine's Day â¤ď¸
Silver leaf is actually a fungal disease caused by chondrostereum purpureum that viciously attacks the Rosaceae family that includes roses, apricots, plums, peaches and almonds. It also attacks deciduous trees like maple and hawthorn. The name is derived from the silvering of leaves on affected hosts, and the disease is often fatal. The fungus is as widespread as its hosts and can be a serious parasite to living trees.
Inspired by the properties of silver leaf disease and wanting to do something in spirit of the year of the dragon, I came up with a poisonous seadragon species. Halfway through I realised the pokemon Dragalge is basically the same concept but mine is quite a different take, I hope!
Really struggled with the rendering. I gave up multiple times and kept sighing on how to fix the shading because no matter what or how much I edited, I wasn't satisfied but I had to move on. It was fun coming up with a design and its background, though!
Each #Funguary2024 I do will be depicted as a sea creature and designed like an encyclopedia page. Funguary is a yearly drawing challenge in February hosted by artist Feefal to turn fungi prompts into characters.

FOTD #104 : silver leaf! (chondrostereum purpureum)
silver leaf is a fungal disease of trees in the family cyphellaceae. it is a pathogen of various deciduous trees, as well as the rose family rosaceae. it is also commercially available as a mycoherbicide :-)
the big question : can i bite it?? unknown !! but i wouldn't recommend trying to eat a fungal disease, lol.
c. purpureum description :
"after starting as just a crust on the wood, the fruiting structure develops undulating intergrowing brackets up to about 3 cm broad, which have a tough rubbery texture. the edges & fertile lower surfaces show a fairly vivid violet colour while the fungus is growing, & the upper surfaces have a grey aspect (sometimes with zonation and usually a lighter edge) & are covered with whitish hairs. after a week or two the fructification dries out, becomes brittle, & turns a drab brown or beige."

Kei had always liked wearing rings. Though he couldn't quite determine as to when he specifically started collectingă
Ąit doesn't change the fact that they're there because he wants them to be there.
He liked how pretty his hands looked. He liked how it bought weight down to his wrapped fingers whenever he moves a joint. The clanking sound of his hand holding onto railings whenever he goes to the train station, echoing with the bustling crowd, him melting in the middle.
Kei doesn't have any specific brand he likesă
Ąprice as well. He just wants them to be stainless steel, and mixes of gold and silver, two clashing colors mended into one above his sugar-like skin.
With volleyball coming to mind, he removes them, of course, leaving them in a small packet in his locker in which he'll immediately wear after showering. He wears rings at home except when going to the bathroom. He wears rings when asleep. He wears rings when styling his hair. He wears rings as the main point of his mirror selfies.
It's the little things that counts, he thinks. He doesn't mention it a lot, clearly not interested in speaking about it any further than, "I like wearing them" with a faraway look to anything else beside who asked. He doesn't need a specific fidget ring. It already keeps him at bay.
Makes him feel like he belongs, having something that he likes and he likes only, with the exception of strangers. It's like a second skin for Kei. He doesn't wear any accessories more than it besides a watch and a bracelet from Natsu that he still kept after all these years. (Can't blame him. It's really pretty.)
But to see Tobio suddenly take interest specifically in his collections of rings, it brings Kei's thoughts to a place that morphs his supposed-to-be at bay feelings.
(It's the little things that counts.)
It echoes in his mind as Tobio fiddles with all the rings he'd owned for almost a decade, unorganized in one wooden box colored with rugby, the slight smell that had made Kei pay attention to Tobio's scrunched-up nose with an affronting sound.
"This is pretty impressive. I never expected for someone like you to be into this stuff." Tobio hums to himself, eyeing one silver ring that has a golden leaf in the middle in fascination, like he'd never see anything like it ever again.
""Someone like me"?" Kei raises a brow.
"Yeah." Tobio simply nods. "Someone like you. Because you play volleyball. And I know you hate anything clinging to you at all times."
How do you know? "And what makes you so sure about that?" His eyes follow the way Tobio's fingertips guide another golden ring in his hold to his left ring fingeră
Ąa much simpler one than the others. He remembers buying it from one of his trips to Kyoto, flashbacks of the vendor telling him it represents harmony of the mind and heart, taking effect when both the wearer and the one who bought it are bonded.
Ridiculous, Kei thought at that moment. And yet he still politely smiled at the vendor and handed them his payment.
Now, it seems as if he may be getting corrupted by Tobio's idiot disease as well for how it looked beneath the late afternoon sunset from his tall windows.
The thought almost felt as if it made his heart do a flip, something that made Kei silently curse to himself, whilst his eyes grew distracted, everything Tobio is saying going inside to one ear and exiting the other.
It's distracting. How it looks like it had always belonged to be right there around Tobio's finger as he raises his hand to take a closer look at it, humming to himself with a song that is definitely not recognizable to Keiă
Ąbut all of it takes his breath away all the same.
His eyes finally catch sapphires, and Kei feels something burning inside of him, static on his fingers as if he had just been electrified.
But the rush didn't prepare him at all at the calamity that is the stare of Tobio's which speaks a thousand words it leaves Kei overwhelmed. Kei's breath hitch without his own accord and without warning, he is a witness of Tobio tilting his head in confusion, bound finger by the golden ring shaking left and right in front of his face as he slightly registers Tobio asking him if he was okay from the depths of his mind.
It echoes all too well, like how it first did on Kei's own hand as he touches the bell he had just used when he made his new year's wish, lost packaging already inside a trash can that is a hundred stairs away from where he was at the temple in front of him.
A voice seeps through and suddenly, his nose is getting pinched.
"Ow, fuck!" Kei's voice is nasal when he hears it and finally, Tobio lets go of his now slightly red nose with an accusing grunt.
"What the hell were you even thinking about for you to look that lost in thought."
Kei blinks, now a distance far from the epiphany he had had, nostalgic feel of the new year snow on his face now warmed up by the spring sun from outside of his apartment.
He lays out a lazy grin, "Too complex for an idiot like you to understand, don't worry about it, King."
Tobio's glare directed at him only sharpens, companied by the click of his tongue, and Kei merely shrugs with a sly look.
Tobio moves from where he was sitting on the floor, in front of Kei's dresser inside his room, closing the box of rings and laying it beside him. He then looks back at Kei again, sitting away from him with enough length that it's not too far but not too close either.
A gnawing itch in his skin tells Kei it doesn't feel enough.
"Hey. Can I keep this?"
Pointing at the ring with his other hand, Tobio casually asks Kei.
Feeling rigid, he looks at Tobio's face then down to his hand then back and forth. Finally, his voice, though wavering, lets out, "W..why?" Inside, Kei curses to himself once again.
"It's pretty." Tobio shrugs. "I like how it feels. You already have a lot of them so.." Considering for a second, he pauses. "I just like it."
For the second time that afternoon, Kei couldn't think immediately. Fog cogs up the gears in his brain and he falters in his breathing, conscious but not feeling how he looked. Kei gulped, and shit, he would for anything his life, swore that Tobio's gaze followed it before returning to his stare once again.
The fact that it's not at all shocking leaves him overwhelmed, questions automatically getting answered without hesitation in which he never knew he could have ever felt.
(It's the little things that counts.)
"I-" Kei's eyes open for a moment. He searches, and searches, not even absolutely sure as to what he wants to say or show. "Well, I guess-" A strangled sound. "It's fine."
Not even a moment later, Tobio's eyes light up, and his expression turns soft, even just lightly with how bad he was at showing that kind of reaction. His lips shake at the corners, as if unconsciously stopping himself to break into a smile, even somewhat small, but he grows unsuccessful as a sound that almost seemed to be a happy exclamation escapes his still-shut tight lips that looked to be curving nonetheless. "Good."
The next wave crashes down on Kei with warmth, unfamiliar from what he knew to be an unbearable chill on his skin. This one glides through his messed-up hair in a swift motion, making contact with his face that doesn't make him want to yell to nothing in annoyance.
It's... it's bright. And gold. And... And-
Tobio clears his throat in the middle of the silence, "Does it.." Something changes, Kei doesn't know what, but he's fine, and alive, and all is well when the sun's glare from outside picks up and envelops Tobio in a stunning halo, forming around Kei's earth. "Does it look good on me?"
It was the calming sea. One he remembers that filled his summer long ago. The one that feels like he's floating and not complaining about how the sand is piling under his clothes. It grows from afar and yet on the shore, it doesn't splash him. It rocks him with a gentle tug on his fingers, pulling him close to the cool feel of the waters.
Far from it, the city still lives from stories below them. Murmured sounds of trains and cars pass along the backgroundă
Ąno amount of its loudness silences the thrums of Kei's heart.
Kei breaks into a smile that feels fond, unforcedă
Ąjust like his hobby. It feels nice on his lips, just like the bands of metal covering his fingertips.
He feels ridiculous. An abnormality at most at the top of his mind.
But if this is what it feels to be an idiot, then Kei sees why Tobio had always been one.
"Yes. It looks good on you, Your Highness."
Kei didn't know being an idiot would feel this exhilarating.

How would you like to see the book I can't publish? It's a book about disability and societal injustice and gay teenagers and terrible diseases. I'm proud of it but I wrote it in a time before OwnVoices and I don't want to take money away from writers who actually are physically disabled. But maybe it's okay to share it for free. YA fantasy that would definitely be banned in Florida.
CAST OUT
CHAPTER ONE
The smell was like nothing I'd ever encountered. It filtered through the hood of my cloak and the silk mask over my nose and mouth, and it filled my lungs the way the sun fills your eyes when you stare at it.
On my shoulders, my parents' hands weighed heavy and warm. My father's trembled.
I was not trembling. I was sixteen today. Full-aged. Full-aged women walked with their heads held high and uncovered. They looked at the world around them, at anything they liked, without worrying they'd see something that would blight a growing mind.
It wasn't gawking to stare around at the gold-plated columns, the silk-draped ceiling, and the obsidian stairs. It was being adult.
We mounted the stairs, my parents a step ahead of me.
At the top, sentinels framed the ivory entrance. Straight whole tusks made up the door, each twice my height and lashed together with silver wire. As we reached the top landing, the sentinels seized silver handles and pulled. They moved like mirrors.
The doors swung wide. A fire smoldered in the entryway, set in a grate lined with silver fish. We walked around it, onto a tiled platform that stretched into the heart of a triangular chamber. Down below, twelve robed men and women sat cross-legged on the floor. White triangles of linen capped their heads.
The Justry.
I took a deep breath. The smell was stronger here. It was a mineral scent, but sweet, almost cloying. I felt a little dizzy.
My parents' hands squeezed my shoulders. Then Father pulled my cloak away. Mother stripped off my mask. For the first time outside of my home, I stood exposed in nothing but my linen camise and baggy calsounds, which belled out all the way down to my slippers. My scalp felt the kiss of fresh air, even with my black hair braided and bound tight to my head. I stood proudly. I wore my best clothes, dyed red with madder and embroidered by Father's hand. I'd even scraped the paint from under my nails.
When my parents returned to my side, smoke choked the air, and the cloak and mask were gone. I would never wear them again. I wanted to skip and jump, but the eyes of the Justry were on me.
The youngest of the Justry rose, a woman no more than seventeen. The justa's skin was the same brown as the powdered cuttlefish ink Mother bought me. A touch lighter than my own.
The woman spoke, but I fixed my eyes on the crimson pillow she held. On the pillow sat a little golden jar.
Mother nudged me. I looked up.
The justa's mouth moved with ritual words Mother had already taught me. "As I have seen revelations, dear one, and been made pure, so will you. The first revelations are always the strongest." She smiled, revealing teeth a shade brighter than her white lip salve. "Are you ready?"
I nodded.
The justa reached down with white-nailed hands and lifted the golden lid. I caught a glimpse of a little cone, which sent up tendrils of glowing green like the essence of life itself. Oracle ore.
Then the smell caught me.
It swept me out of my body and up to the ceiling and through it, like I was no more substantial than a soul. It sparkled and churned and danced in my lungs, and I danced and churned and sparkled in the air above the city, a leaf on the wind. A grain of sand being melted to glass.
I felt as though I could shatter.
Lights burst behind my eyes like lost stars, and they showed me wonders that flashed by so fast I missed half of them. Underground caverns and winding tunnels that burned with their own greenish light. Gold-fronted mansions that lined the curve of a manicured hill. Huge automas, in shapes of animal and human and nothing living, with joints that moved smooth as oil. Their intricate, glowing guts.
A pale-faced woman with a jutting chin and stub nose, her low cheeks framed by mousy brown hair. Her eyes were the green of malachite pigment and old copper and the little cone evanescing on the pillow in front of me.
I fell into them.
I fell into myself.
I knelt between my parents on the platform. I had not moved except to fall. The justas still surrounded us, and the woman with white lip salve had replaced the lid on the golden jar.
Her smile at me was tender. I was too dazed to read her lips, but I could envision in signs what she said; Mother had drilled it into me. "Well? Child, tell us of what you have seen, and be welcome to adulthood."
I let my parents haul me to my feet. My knees felt like pudding. I closed my eyes, and Mother and Father steadied me with their hands.
"It was amazing," I said to the justa. And I laughed. "It was beautiful. More beautiful than anything I've ever seen. And the tasteâ it was like waterfalls in the mountains, or the way a diamond must taste. I've never seen either, but I've readâ"
Mother's hand clamped down on my shoulder. Father's had fallen away. Something was happening. Something was wrong. I opened my eyes.
The justa's mouth was moving. I'd missed the first part of the sentence. But I read the last of it on her lips and guessed the rest. "âShe will be cast out."
My hands clenched in dismay. "What? No, you can't! I saw the revelations! I saw!" I needed to taste it again. I needed the justa to lift the cover over that little glowing cone and let me suck its magic into my lungs.
The justa shrouded the golden case with a sleeve and stared at me with narrowed eyes. "Silence your child, perfectas. Her voice saddens this body."
Mother pulled me close. She spoke â her chest reverberated against my back â but I couldn't see, even without my hood. My eyes had frozen on the justa's mouth. I caught every twitch of her lips, as though I had known and read her face for years.
The justa replied, "She is an imperfecta. The law has no leeway." Her eyes turned towards Father. He must have said something. "Take comfort. There are always miracles. Perhaps the Great Unknowns will hear your prayers and cure her."
I set my jaw. "I don't need to be cured. There's nothing wrong with me."
The justa ignored me. "You may have one night with her before she is escorted from the city. With our blessings."
A drop splashed the back of my neck. Mother was crying.
The justa lifted a hand. "Walk in perfection."
My parents led me away.
#
They didn't speak to me until we were home, inside our own entry chamber, which I'd painted myself a year ago. I stopped just over the threshold, brushed by the draft of the door swinging shut behind me. My hands swept the air, agitated, too fast. "They aren't really going to make me leave, are they?"
My parents turned towards me. Tears glistened in the cracks of wrinkles that hadn't been there that morning. "Zisha," Mother said, her hands cupping my face. Was this the last time I'd see my name on her lips?
"They can't throw me out," I signed. "Not just because I talk strangely."
Father and Mother exchanged mournful glances. Father signed, "Little bird, they knew it wasn't only your voice."
"Just because I'm deaf? Because I can't hear?"
Mother stepped back, freeing her hands. Her fingers twitched a subdued answer. "Yes, dear one."
My face felt hot and sticky. Tears ran down my cheeks. "All those years you spent coaching me on how to talk properly, how to read lips. They were for nothing?"
Father signed, "We hoped your training would fool them. Butâ"
"It didn't."
"You have a beautiful voice, dear one," Mother signed.
"The Justry didn't think so."
Mother bit her lip. "They are all fools."
I signed, "Tell them I'll stay inside. I won't take revelations again. No one needs to see meâ"
"They know you are here now," Father signed. "They won't let you hide."
I swallowed. Sniffed. "It isn't fair."
Father shook his head. "I will pack a bag for you, little bird. Go pick your favorite books from the library." He strode away, his back as stiff as the benches lining the entry hall.
I sank into one and signed weakly, "He's thinking of books? Now?"
"You will want them," Mother signed. "You will not find any outside the Plenary Cities. They cannot read, out there."
"Can they even paint?"
"Not like you, love."
I hugged my knees to my chest, pressed my face against them. Tried my voice. "I don't want to go there."
Her hand brushed my back, but I did not look to see her reply. I didn't want to see it.
I wanted to stay.
