Not sure when this started happening… but we definitely emptied the nest boxes last night and tonight 5 of our 6 boxes had an egg! We have randomly had a couple large elongated eggs, but so far their first eggs had been small and long, so I didn’t think we had a new layer. I guess I was wrong! 🥚

I lost another chicken today. Oreo’s health had gone downhill for a few weeks now. I thought it was the chronic fungal infection she’d get, but she never got better even with treatment. I’m thinking she may have developed cancer. There was nothing I could do for her.
Oreo was my two and half year old Silver-laced Wyandotte. Her feather pattern was so pretty. She didn’t let us hold her, but she would come up behind me and peck my back when I sat on the ground. She enjoyed the corner perch in the chicken yard. Her and our silkie,Puffy, had some kind of rivalry. Her last good day was Saturday. She walked around the yard all day and free-ranged when she had the energy. RIP Oreo 🖤🤍

chicken advice needed
oh for the love of all things good... Rosetti has decided she is going to crow... a lot.
I thought it was the neighbors teasing her because she gets so upset over noise but it's her
And I don't know what to do! I cant have her cockledoodledoing all over the place
Any suggestions short of termination?
We've had a morph that happened about first year in previous flocks and was able to rehome but these girls are over 4yr and she still lays eggs a couple of times a week. No one wants a fussy older hen that is ultra sensitive to noise, crows a lot and only gives a few eggs... Except me and the crowing will be an issue. I know she is strung out and misses her sister, big butt Bronte. Any advise?

They were bred from a combination of various breeds, including the Dark Brahma, Cochins, and other local breeds, to create a bird with good meat and egg production qualities.

I just remembered I have free will and can post whatever I want, so here are the misfits as chicken breeds, half based on my personal experiences, and half just on the vibes. (Perhaps I'll do the acolytes and staff later heheh)
Lenore
Plymouth Rock
Morella
Buff Frizzle (bantam breed)
Duke
Silver Laced Polish
Pluto
Black Old English Game Bantam
Berenice
Golden Sebright (Bantam breed)
Eulalie
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte
*(Note: bantam breeds, whether true bantams or bantam versions of regular breeds, are pretty much mini chickens. They're like... Half the size of regular chickens lmao. This includes their eggs, making their eggs perfect for halfing recipes!)

I’ve named this lovely lady Kitty because her feathers remind me of a ballgown like Kitty’s :)
Every rainy day the chickens look at me so sadly from the inside of their coop and go father please let us out. Please we don't mind the rain. And every time I let them out and then they glare at me from the front porch all wet and soggy like it's MY fault it's raining outside
#she’s a silver laced wyandotte#so she’s very sweet!!#look at how short her legs look next to the chicken behind her#ahhhhhhhhh

I LOVE YOUR CHICKENS!!! I'm a big chicken lover too!! What breeds are they? Do they have names?
YEAHHH SO DO I <33 Ohh boy here we go...
Our head rooster is Shmuel, and he's a rhode island red brahma mix! Then we have his son, Santa, who's mom was an olive egger! Then we have Rocket, the swedish flower hen rooster!
We have Big Red and Mavis, the rhode island reds, Janet the easter egger, Helen and Athena the olive eggers, Three ISA browns we can't tell apart so they're just the ISA browns-- Then we have Mama Karen the black jersey giant, Wendy and Odette the silver laced wyandottes, Annie and Rat Bird the blue stars, and my favorite girl Pumpkin who we dont know the breed of-- We also have Dweeb and Goldie the buff orpingtons.
Then we have Mulberry and Morrow--the first two we hatched ourselves. And we also have Cheese and Crackers, who are identical, but Cheese is a barred rock and Crackers is Mama Karens and Shmuels daughter. We also have two unnamed DweebxShmuel babies that we can't tell apart so we call them the Dweeblings.
Finally, we have Corn, the bantam silkie rooster, and his bantam silkie hens: Batman, Fifi, and Beans. (we also have Rampage the drake, and Momo and Elon Muscovy the duck hens) All my beloved creatures <3

It's been a very long time since I've been active so I wanted to make a quick little list of everyone I still have — with updated photos, especially!
I no longer live with my chickens — I moved out in December 2023 and had to leave my chickens behind, as I live in an apartment now. They still live with my parents so I still get to see them and certain responsibilities like their health and cleaning the coop are still mine.
Recently I split the flock and gave half of my chickens to a family friend who I trust will take good care of them, because my parents haven't taken care of them to my satisfaction.
Here are the chickens who, for one reason or another, remained here.
Bee — Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, born May 2018. Honestly the worst at doing a rooster's job, but I love him anyway. He's very shy and very cute, can be a bit of a bully towards other chickens but is super well behaved with people!
Florence — Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, born May 2018. Softest, fluffiest bird imaginable. It doesn't fully come across in photos but her feathers are incredibly plush! She's a bit nervous and seems lazy. It's part of her charm!
Adelaide — Black Australorp, born May 2018. A very calm bird with a surprisingly raucous voice. She adores Bee and never leaves his side, and always snuggles up next to him at night.
Tofu & Dumpling — Gold Laced Wyandottes, born June 2023. Two babies I accidentally acquired and they've been here ever since. They're always together! Quite shy since they didn't get handled much growing up, but naturally very curious so they'll approach anyone they find interesting. They like exploring the yard and the edge of the woods together.
~
The rest of the chickens in this list have been moved to their new home, where I will still be visiting them.
Midnight — Gold Laced Wyandotte, born March 2013. My old lady! Calm and sweet, she took a shine to the younger chickens right away when they were little. At feeding times she usually calls the other hens over to come eat like they're her babies. She started doing this in the past year or so and I'm not sure why. It's very cute though.
Moth — Barred Rock, probably born in 2018. Got her as an adult from my neighbor when he stopped wanting chickens so her age is an estimate. Survived a fox attack some years ago and lived in my room for two months while recovering, and she became a dear sweet bird in that time! She likes to follow people around and observe them.
Magpie — Dominique, born May 2018. Nosy bird who likes to be in the middle of whatever I'm doing! She makes noises like a squeaky wheel instead of clucking, which is very entertaining.
Crow — Dominique, born May 2018. Looks like a barred rock because of her single comb, but she is about two-thirds the size of one. Very small! Little baby who wants to be held and carried all the time. Likes to walk up to the nearest person and stand on their feet until she gets picked up, and she'll eventually start pecking my legs if I ignore her!
Dawn — Silver Spangled Appenzeller, born May 2018. Independent and energetic, she's always wandering off to explore as soon as she gets the chance. Gets along with people better than with other chickens. She's always finding her way onto my lap or, preferably, into my sweater.
